Actually Da Nang was a pretty nice city even back then.  Lovely beaches.  Lots to see and do and most of the general public was friendly to us.  They were more scared of the Cong than they were us!  And like most of Vietnam, there were almost as many people there who spoke French as spoke only Vietnamese.

I always intended to go back there as a tourist but life and making a living got in the way.

I would like to travel over there to see him. The closest I've been to Vietnam was when I was stationed at Kadena AB in Okinawa from 1980-83. Got to go TDY to Clark AB a couple of times. Also 1 TDY to Kwang Ju Korea. I too have always wanted to go back for a visit, but life and the years have caught up with the wife and I. My wife isn't physically able to travel now.

I don't think so.  Marble Mountain wasn't really a mountain.  In Kentucky I'm sure we'd even have called it a knob.  But it was definitely a rise from the rest of the area and not nearly that populated.  It also was surrounded by water on three sides.  That view appears to be looking North and West on the coast and the water's edge of Da Nang itself.  The outcropping at the top of the coast shown should lead to the base of a mountain range (whose name I can't recall) and was on the road way up to Phu Bai.

My youngest son lives in Da Nang and loves it. He teaches English. He's sent me a lot of pictures and it really looks nice. Probably a lot different since the war.

I can not answer to how well this would work in MSFS2020, but I have been using the MS Sidewinder Precision 2 joystick for helicopter flying since I purchased it in late 1998.

This joystick has proven itself with the test of time.

It is self centering, but the amount of force required to hold it off center in minimal, just enough to want to center, but not enough that I ever am fighting with it.

This joystick is available on ebay between for $10-$30.

I have never looked into another stick for helicopter flying as I have been completely happy with it.

In the near future I will be modifying a joystick and separate throttle into a full size cyclic and collective.

I will detail the mod (joys and frustration) and share here.

When not using the Sidewinder 2 for fixed wing, I use either the CH Products Flight Sim Yoke, or a combo of CH Products Fighter Stick and Pro Throttle.

I've also been using the MS Sidewinder 2 Pro. I've been using it since my FS 2004 days. I have other joysticks, but the Sidewinder works best with helicopters.

So far, the AP switches do toggle, with lights or EFIS indications, but have not gotten them to control the AC.

When I figure this out, I'll post it here.

Thanks, I've tried the HAP autopilot on the default Bell 206 with mixed results. It would be great if the Eurocopter AP actually worked.

  5. While I was looking through some of my old FSX aircraft file downloads the other day and noticed one that I didn't remember ever installing. The H&S Design EC135/635 Eurocopter.  I'm not the greatest when it comes to Helicopters in FSX, but I thought I would install it and try it out. After installing it I read the pdf manual, which is a must because you have to follow the startup and shutdown steps exactly.

Once I got it started I increased the throttle (collective) on my flight stick and got it to hover. It's really stable in a hover, much more than any of the other helicopters I've tried in FSX. I pushed forward on the stick and started accelerating and climbing. You just have to use a little rudder to keep it flying straight ahead. Boy what a stable sweet flying bird. There are several different models and configurations to choose from with glass and steam gauge panels. I tried out the Life Flight with the half glass panel.

After flying around for a while I decided to try a landing, which is where I definitely don't shine. I slowed to about 40 kts and started my decent back to the airport. You really have to lower the throttle and pull back on the stick to slow down, but it's smooth and not jerky. Once you get to the speed you want just increase throttle and push forward on the stick to maintain your speed and altitude. Just lower the throttle to start your descent. I didn't land on the exact spot on the tarmac, but it was a smooth landing. Better than any I have made before, and it was the first time with the Eurocopter. After flying around for a while and practicing my landings I can now land exactly where I want. I did have a few rough landings and you can tell because of the sparks from the skids. I also had a landing where the tail rotor smacked the ground, and the helicopter immediately shuts down, warning lights flash, and warning horns blare.  You can't restart the helicopter until you reload the flight.

I am definitely hooked on this helicopter now. I've already logged over 25 hours flying it. I can't remember what FS site I downloaded it from, but I recommend it to any of you chopper buffs out there. I'm sure a quick Goggle search would find a site where you could download it. I attached the manual with all the info.

  6. Jorgen, that makes perfect sense. The CTDs happen after I load a new addon whether it's scenery, aircraft etc. The CTDs are annoying, but after a couple of restarts FSX seems to work fine until I load a new addon or modification. Thanks again for the insight and response.

  8. I ran into a problem a few weeks ago with FSX. FSX was crashing on startup occasionally? I took me a while to figure out, but it seems anytime I load a new scenery, aircraft, or update FSX crashes the first time I start it. Sometimes it crashes twice? once I restart it's usually okay. Anyone else ever run into this? Is it a known problem and is there a fix?

    Thanks

  9. I've just recently got back into FSX after several years of inactivity, and a computer crash. I've reloaded FSX Acceleration on my computer and everything is working fine except the virtual cockpits aren't showing up on the Project Open Skies aircraft I've installed? I seem to remember years ago that you had to install a Microsoft .dll file in the main FSX directory to get the virtual cockpits to load. Any help would be appreciated. Also, how do you know if FSX is running 64 or 32 bit? My system is Windows 10 64 bit so I'm assuming I'm running 64. But FSX is an old program so not sure if it runs at 64.

  10. My computer finally crashed and I had to buy a new one. I did back up all my files at least. When I installed FSX on the new (windows 10) machine it didn't give me the option to register the software. I can't find a solution online anywhere. Anyone out there have any suggestions?
