Run out of available memory

Recommended Posts

I have FSX/Acceleration on Windows 10, and lately I am experiencing FSX crashes due to message that I have run out of available memory. I have plenty of memory on my PC, so is there a "fix" for this?
This error appears when your computer has run out of VIRTUAL memory. This is nothing to do with ram or hard drive memory but is a limitation of 32bit programs such as fsx. The only way to avoid this is to adjust your settings or use a less complicated aircraft. Perhaps you have installed a new addon?

There a various programs to monitor virtual memory usage available including the payware version of fsuipc.

Sorry

Stinger, virtual memory is what the OS allocates on a disk, so that the OS can swap things in and out of RAM there as needed. It is really an anachronism from the old days when RAM was expensive, and I have the virtual memory (also sometimes called a RAM disk) turned off on my system.

What westway is running out of is VAS, or virtual address space - the 4 GB block of RAM that is the maximum the FSX can address. And yes, that situation can happen if you install a new add-on or if you push your sliders too much to the right, and FSUIPC will help and monitor that situation.

Hi,

Have a look at the PDF at the following link, it explains in easy terms

the optimal texture size's and formats for FSX, and how to optimise

them, it may be able to help if you have a VAS problem. It really is

a good read, and the author uses examples to illustrate the effect

that large and poorly optimised textures have on sim performance.

Also, if you are using FSX, do you have the "HIGHMEMFIX=1" in your

CFG file, I understand it was left out of FSX, but added to FSX-SE, I

don't know whether this fix makes any difference to VAS usage, but

I am sure somebody more clever than I will let us know, ;)

I have optimised many many textures over the years, including all the

"Traffic Global AI" aircraft textures, and although it is a lot of work, it

does make difference,

Cheers
