We have 2,100 gallons of fuel on board for the 918 nm flight of about four hours and forty five minutes. We have good weather with moderate cloud cover and we will be cruising at an altitude of 18,000 feet, most of it over the Mediterranean Sea. Click to Enlarge . . . . . . 1. Troops loaded, cockpit checks completed and engines started. 2. Taxiing out to runway 5 for departure. 3. We are in the air and retracting the gear. 4. We see Cairo’s main terminal at about 700 feet below. 5. Turning on a northwesterly course for Malta. 6. Climbing through 5,000 feet over the Nile River we see pyramids off our left wing. 7. With the Nile still below us we are passing up through 8,500 feet about 17 miles from Cairo. 8. Now at 15,000 feet over the El Beheira Governorate of Egypt. 9. At our cruising altitude of 18,000 feet we are nearing Alexandria and the Mediterranean Coast. 10. Over the Mediterranean Sea about 350 miles from Cairo. 11. Now 250 miles from Malta. Not much to see but clouds and the Mediterranean Sea. 14. Cruising 125 miles from Malta. 15. Thirty miles from Malta we turn and begin our initial descent. 16. Descending through 12,000 feet as the light begins to fade. 17. Down to 5,500 feet about 15 miles from RAF Luqa we have been assigned runway 32. 18. We turn to begin lining up our approach at Luqa. 19. We are on short final to runway 32 with gear down and flaps 40. 20. Touchdown. 21. Taxiing to parking via runway 14 we see the backsides of a squadron of Vickers Valiant B (K) Mk 1 Bombers. 22. Engines shut down and the troops disembarked.
