NMLW
Ethiopian Flight 097 is a C-47 on a 719 mile trip from Nairobi, Kenya (gained independence in December, 1963) to Addis Abeba, Ethiopia (formerly known as Haile Selassie I International Airport located in the Bole area, about 4 miles southeast of Addis Ababa), (HKJK-HAAB). We have 600 gallons of fuel on board for this flight of about 6 hours and 40 minutes. The weather is fair at the start, but there is some stormy weather about 70 miles north of Nairobi. The weather at Bole airport in Addis Abeba is expected to be fair with scattered clouds. Our altitude will vary between 9,000 and 11,000 feet depending on the terrain. The route takes us on a north by northeast course to Addis Abeba. Thanks to: Aircraft: Douglas C-47. The base pack and original textures are by Manfred Jahn & team. The 1964 Ethiopian Airlines livery is by Frank Gonzalez. I could find no 1960s scenery for Bole other than the standard FS9 version, so we’ll just pretend it is 1964. - Rwy12 and EZ Static Object and Scenery Libraries. - FS2004 Classic Scenery Libraries V4 by Wolfgang Gersch. - REX FS9 enhancements for sky, cloud, weather, water/waves, runway, taxiway textures, sun and lighting. - Flight One Ground Environment Pro II. - HDE 2.0 grass texture enhancement by Pablo Diaz. Click to Enlarge . . . . . . The flight plan has been filed, passengers loaded and engines started. Taxiing to Rwy. 6 for departure from Nairobi’s Embakasi Airport. Takeoff. We have positive rate of climb and are stowing the gear. It has not taken us very long to reach 8,000 feet because the altitude at Embakasi is 5,327 feet. Cruising at 9,000 feet near Thika, Kenya. We begin to experience thickening clouds and some turbulence about 15 southeast of Mount Kenya. The mountain rises to 5,199 meters (17,057 feet). The clouds darken and the turbulence becomes stronger. I estimate we are about 20 miles west of Buffalo Springs National Reserve and well north of Mt. Kenya. Now into the thunderstorm near the small town of Wamba, Kenya just southwest of the Mathews Range that rises to 6,000 feet. We will climb to 11,000 feet for about 10 minutes. That was close! We are still experiencing heavy rain and turbulence. The rain and turbulence is moderating. We are about 10 miles north of the mountains, so we descend back down to 10,000 feet. NMLW
Click to Enlarge . . . . . . The rain has stopped and the weather is beginning to clear. With the storm behind us we have the Marsabit National Park off to our right and we can see the southern edge of Lake Rudolf behind and to our left. About 400 miles into our flight we cross the border into Ethiopia. Cruising at 10,000 feet with blue skies above and scattered clouds. The northern end of Lake Rudolf Just off our left wing. We have been cruising over Amora Gedel National Park and see Lake Awasa ahead. Descending to 9,600 feet to get below the clouds for a better view. We make a slight course correction as we pass below some darkening clouds. Now passing over Shala Lake just north of Bure, Ethiopia. Another course correction with Lake Ziway below. NMLW
Click to Enlarge . . . . . . Mount Zuqualla ahead to our left is about 31 miles from Bole Airport at Addis Abeba and 35 miles from the city of Addis Ababa. Descending through 9,000 feet we have initial flaps and gear down as we turn towards Bole Airport 8 miles away. Passing through 8,500 feet 5 miles from Bole. We are 3 miles out and lining up on Rwy. 25R. Flaps full and on final approach. Touchdown. Altitude at Bole Airport is 7,626 feet. Tail wheel down and heading toward the turnoff we take a look at the terminal. Entering the turnoff. Taxiing to parking. It looks like Ethiopian has a lock on business here at Bole. Parked and passengers disembarked. Thanks for flying Ethiopian Airways. Larry
