About This File
FS98 Lockheed JetStar Prototype. Flown in just 241 days after the start of the project, the JetStar was designed for the USAF's UCX competition. Disappointment with the performance of the Bristol engines led Lockheed to adapt the JetStar to the now familiar four rear mounted Pratt and Whitneys for the production versions. Aside from the twin Bristol Orpheus turbojets, the prototype also differed from the production version by the lack of the distinctive wing slipper tanks and the single wheel on each of the landing gears. Two were built. By Eric C. Johnson.
