About This File

FS98 Douglas AC-47 Spooky of the 14th Air Commando Squadron, 1965. The AC-47 was a gunship variant of the venerable WWII era C-47 transport. Nicknamed 'Puff the Magic Dragon' (owing to the visual effect of its fixed miniguns firing at night) the AC-47 served as a flying artillery platform. They slowly flew left hand circuits around ground targets by night, dropping flares and with the guns aimed by the pilot using a fixed-azimuth sight looking through the left-hand cockpit window. The first of its kind, it proved the value of the airborne gunship so well that it led to the development of today's AC-130 Spectre. FS5 DC-3 Model by John Kelley, FS5 AC-47 conversion (with visible guns) and textures by Arnold Fuller. FS98 FD by Mike Vidal and Tom Gibson. Updated for 98 with animated prop, flaps and landing gear. Includes new generic twin-propliner panel with GPS (bitmap by Chuck dome, with gauges by Chuck Dome, Glenn Copeland, Brian Kostick, Jay Crawford, Paul Schwerdtfeger, Andreas Jaros and Christian Koegler). Sound package by Jack Hill. Vulcan cannon sound by Slammer. Flight training video by Trev Morson. Appropriate flight music (midi) included. Package compiled by Derek 'Deke' Wakefield of Indianola Flightcraft.
