About This File

FS2004 Scenery--Kasabonika & Ear Falls in NW Ontario Canada. Kasabonika is 60 miles northwest of Webequie and 60 miles northeast of Kingfisher Lake, both recent posts. This puts it at the northern edge of the inland settlements, some 160 miles south of the Hudson Bay coast in the region of Fort Severn. Kasabonika Lake is a twisty and complicated stretch of water and while large overall there is no single large area of water; it is as much a river as it is a lake. The settlement is on an island at the southern edge. The airfield is on the shore of the lake nearby, joined to the island settlement by a road and a bridge. Ear Falls settlement is around 40 miles south of Red Lake, on the road that runs south to Dryden and Sioux Lookout. The airfield is 8 miles north of the settlement and is now closed ("now" in this case being 2010, the approximate date for all these northern airfields). It is unusual in that it has an asphalt runway, still usable today (2020) if there is an emergency. The buildings and the lighting etc has all been removed but the runway is still there and visible in the summer months. These two are the last airfields that I will be posting in northwest Ontario. There is a fault in Ultimate Terrain in the region of Kasabonika, which I have spent some time correcting so that missing islands show as normal scenery. I was hoping to also rectify the problem in the nearby area of Big Trout Lake, which did not prove possible. There is a correction posted online that partly remedies this but while it is better than nothing it still is not satisfactory, and after trying myself I can see that it is the best that can be managed. So in that area I give up. There are a similar number of airfields in northern Manitoba that I may post, and again these are settlement airfields with gravel runways etc and small populations of friendly people. If you find an error email me please. The video shows a new blue and white garage, which was not there in 2010. By Roger Wensley.
