About This File

FSX Scenery--Bird Island, Eastern Cape South Africa. This includes most structures on the island including a fully operational lighthouse. The Bird Island group (33°50′26"S 26°17′10"E) is situated in Algoa Bay about 53 km (33 mi) east of Port Elizabeth and 7 km (4.3 mi) off Woody Cape. The group consists of Bird Island, Seal Island, Stag Island and the Black Rock Reef, which together form part of the Addo Elephant National Park. Bird Island has a lighthouse, erected in 1898 after a series of shipwrecks in the vicinity of the island. The lighthouse is now automated and the old keeper's house is sadly abandoned. Bird Island has an area of 19 hectares (47 acres). It is relatively flat and rises to 9 m (30 ft). Seal Island is 0.6 hectares (1.5 acres) hardened area to the west of the abandoned lighthouse keeper's house is suitable for helicopter landings - see screen shot for details. Sight-seeing chopper flights from Port Elizabeth would be the easiest way to visit the island. The island hosts one of the largest Cape Gannet populations in the southern hemisphere. The scenery includes both flying birds and their calls. It also includes a pod of dolphins which swim from time to time in the channel between Bird Island and Seal Island. In addition, boats occasionally visit the island from Port Elizabeth. V1.00 (2020-01-04) by Lee Hall.
