About This File

FS98 Otto 1913 Militartyp Doppeldecker. Pre-WWI reconnaissance and training pusher-biplane built by Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenwerke in 1913. Modifications to a 1911 Henry Farman racing biplane gave rise to the initial Otto military B.M. types, from which this version was developed. It had a boat-shaped nacelle for pilot and observer, a rectangular strutted fuselage ("Gitterrumpf") with three rudders and two tail-skids, and twin wheels on each landing-gear skid. It was powered by a 6-cylinder 100 hp Argus AS.I engine, and top speed was over 100 kph. Forty units were ordered by the Konigliche Bayrische Fliegertruppe based in Oberschleissheim near Munich, and used mainly as trainers. Currently, the Werftverein in Oberschleissheim are building a full-size replica of this historical biplane. A total of about 150 Otto "B" types were built from 1912 to 1915. The airplane was sturdy, stable, reliable, easy to fly, and saw service early in WWI. Textures by Udo Entenmann. By Stephan Scholz.
