About This File

FS2004 Scenery--Peawanuck And Winisk, north Ontario, Canada. Winisk is at the mouth of the Winisk River where it reaches Hudson Bay, around 110 miles west of the corner of James Bay and Hudson Bay. The village of Winisk was flooded in 1986, and it and everybody were moved inland 30 miles to Peawanuck, which stands on a hill in a bend of the Winisk River, 170 feet above sea level. In fact there are now, once again, some houses in the Winisk area, and for sure someone is using the airfield, although it is supposedly abandoned. The runway is gravel and some 1,800 feet long. The area where the Winisk River flows into Hudson Bay is part of the Provincial Polar Bear Park, which is the least visited Provincial Park of them all. A real "get-away-from-it-all place to go from $2,950" (as one company advertises it). Peawanuck has 3,500 feet of gravel runway, which should be enough. There is no fuel available officially, but a fuel can be purchased for an eye-popping sum and that high price is the reason for the fence. By Roger Wensley and Jim Turner.
