About This File

FS2004 Vought SBU USS Ranger Paint Pack. Twelve paints for Paul Clawson's Vought SBU dive bomber in the liveries of the section leaders of USS Ranger's two Scouting squadrons, VS-41 (formerly VS-1B) and the new VS-42. VS-1 was renumbered to VS-41 in the great fleet reorganization of 1937, but they kept their green tails and stayed aboard the Ranger. VS-42 was newly formed to replace the old VB-4, which was moved to another carrier. These paints depict the unit in its new VS-41 guise. The "neutrality star" on the cowling signifies participation in the "Neutrality Patrol," the euphemistic name for the U.S. Navy's participation in the Battle of the Atlantic before America entered World War Two.
