Review: KGEG Spokane International Airport Freeware
By Andy Barter
Spokane, Washington is a city innorthwest USA. It has a population of over half a million in the areaand is served by the Spokane International Airport at an elevation of1843 feet. There are two runways 03/21 with a length of 11,000 feet isthe main runway and 08/26 at 8200 feet is still long enough to handlemost traffic. KGEG handles nearly 4 million passengers per year (2018)and is expanding.
Spokane is rich in history of the railway being the gateway to thewest. If you've played Train Simulator you are familiar with thisarea. Flight simulator pilots are not so familiar with this area butthere is a lot to see. Rivers and mountain landscapes are a majorattraction. The Rockies to the west, Canada to the north, and thegreat plains to the east make for some real pretty enroutevisuals. Spokane also is famous for the 1927 air race which began inNew York and the grand prize was $10,000. It's estimated over 91,000people visited Spokane over the week of September 19-25. The population ofSpokane at the time was around 9,000 so that's a lot of people forthis little town.
Brett Delana has made the dreary default scenery come to life withhis freeware offering for KGEG. Take a look at the default sceneryshot below and then after that Brett's scenery. What adifference. Brett has done custom designed buildings with FSDS 3.5.1,used ADE for the layout, and the textures are from pics he's takenfrom his current home in Anchorage, Alaska and pieced together forKGEG. I've included some winter shots here and there.
Default Scenery:
Let's take a closer look at his work. First the terminal. Theairside has a unique design with a circular main terminal with wingsand a large parking garage attached that Brett has even createdwalkways for.
Now the fire hall. This is not a typical fire hall. It was designedby TCA as a 16,500 sq ft facility with nice accomodations for the firefighters working there. The interior is not modelled, this is freewareafter all, but the exterior is well done capturing the shape of theroof well.
Here are few shots of the hangars and service buildingsincluded.
Brett has included a warehouse with cargo vehicles as well. SpokaneInternational handled 141 million tons of cargo in 2018 so a decentsize facility is required.
Here are two shots from a satellite showing a winter scene andshowing it overlayed on top ofMegascenery Earth Washingtonso you can see how close the layout is to real life.
Give Brett's scenery a try. You can find it at FlightSim.Com.
