map ?

So I have the beta version running fairly well on my system and am gradually learning more about where all the switches and keystrokes are, but I don't understand the map function. It appears limited to my specific area. When I move out to the "black" area, it springs back to the "white" area. So I don't understand how to use the map to plan for , say, a 2 hour flight to another city. Am I doing something wrong or is this a limitation of the beta?

Hopefully a beta problem. I use an external Flight Planner, and just use the local map for Nav aids ATC enroute. If you know the general direction between A and B just fly that general direction.
