laptop processor around 60%, no major processes running

hi to you all!

After a couple of days of simple web browsing and listening to music on my laptop

i've found out it has become really slow.

it can easily top up to 85 % usage

this is what AVAST found:

system tweeks

--disable fast user swithing

--set CPU priority to prefer foreground apps

system parameters

user tweeks

--forground lock time out

--hung app time out

--similar to waittokillservicetimeout but not for shutdown

--menu show delay

--wait to kill service timeout

--disable beeping on errors

--disable contacting microsoft web service to resolve file association

--disable usage of NFTSs tracking feature for LNK resolution

My avast is free, so i dont really trust paying 24$ for PC cleanup.

i use Ccleaner instead, but does not seem to find the problem

ill be very happy if you guys help me get rid of that thing

thank you ! :)

Hi,

I experienced the same thing a couple of weeks ago and it took a few days to ascertain (in my case) the cause. Whether your issue is related to mine will need investigation but, based on info I got when I chased it up, it certainly seems to be widespread.

After a lot of investigations using Task Manger/Resoruce monitor I noticed that the svchost.exe (netsvcs) process was using a lot of memory and CPU time. A check of the associated process/services that where running under the core svchost.exe (netsvcs) process revealed an item called AutoKMS.exe was running and using about 95% of the overall mem/CPU allocated to the process. Not being aware of what AutoKMS was I googled it - I suggest that you do to, to get an idea as to what it may or may not be.

Basically it can be a valid MS file used to activate download versions MS office, OR a cracked version of the MS file (used to validate cracked version of MS Office) OR a virus. Based on the many threads that I have read, a symptom of the virus version is high memory/CPU use. It is also very evident that the virus varient is missed by most AV suites

For some basic info see http://www.file.net/process/autokms.exe.html and http://www.freefixer.com/library/file/AutoKMS.exe-66154/ - the second link includes a link to a free tool to remove it - I used the tool to remove it from my infected rig.

FTR - I have two rigs, one with W7 and the other with W10 - both have Norton and Malwarebytes (neither of which picked it up). Additionally, both have an legit download version of Office 2013 installed. Only the W7 rig was affected.

Based on the fact the I have MS Office 2013 installed I first, based on comments made at the bottom of the 2nd webpage linked above, checked to make sure that AutoKMS files found were not the MS legit version and needed. As my W10 rig did not have them but used the same validation method as the W7 rig AND that the AutoKMS folder creation date was dated 18 May 2016 (almost a year after the inital install of Office onto both rigs) I assumed that files were rogue and deleted them. Since then my rig has behaved normally and MS Office still works.......although IF the AutoKMS files were valid and needed then I'll be faced with having to re-activate in about 160 days time.

Regards

oh

I havent seen that autokms running in my pc.

but some folks in antoher forum told me about overheating

and true, my laptop has been overheating this last days, here in quebec temperatures have raised up to 107 farnht, and we have no air conditioning at home..

Another thing, i remember las time i opened my laptop to clean the fan

thermal paste was all dry and i forgot to replace it...

i guess my troubles come from there...

To be honest, I have never known CPU/GPU overheating to cause high CPU usage. Common signs of CPU/GPU overheating are: BSOD crashes (that get more frequent as the heat associated damage increases), random unexpected power resets (this is caused by the inbuilt thermal cutoff sensor - if the MoBo has it - operating when the CPU reaches what is called its Tj Max temp), prolonged screen freezes or random glitch lines drawn on screen.

I still think you should do a check for malware - use the free version of Malwarebytes to scan your laptop - found at https://www.malwarebytes.com/.

Two free tools to help you monitor CPU/GPU temps (if you don't already have any) are

CPU - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

GPU - https://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

Something else that may be causing the issue could be a power/voltage related problem. sometimes a CPU's voltage settings can cause issues. However, to determine this you will need to get detailed information regarding your CPU and its operating limits and use a tool like CPU-Z (found at http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html) to get detailed info on the state of the CPU.

finally i had to put thermal paste because the older one was completely dry

or just not there...

disable some processes on Windows boot, specially Windows update and svchost

I really think this was almost an overheating issue, since yesterday core temperature is pretty stable, even better, battery seems to hold longer :)

but i still had to run, antivirus, antimalware, and registry cleaner to get rid of some unwanted stuff..

Now cpu usage levels are around 10% :)

Thank you !
