how do you enter a heading and altitude into the thing and get it to hold the plane on course ?

I have a bunch of my sons old charts + a gazillion pages of flight guide airports.( wish I had the binder for them !) would like to fly around using them and be able to relax a bit on long hauls

Without any technical 'stuff' to deal with (radios, bug, tuning, etc) when you get to desired altitude: (1). Press 'Z' key (to activate AP), then (2). Press 'Ctrl (hold) + Z' to set AP to hold 'Present Alt' then (3). Press 'Ctrl (hold)+H' to set AP to hold 'Present Heading'. That's it. To de-activate AP press the 'Z' key. Just to make sure press the other combo keys to remove them as they might interfere with hand flying (landing). This works for 99% of airplanes, whether it has AP or not. It's 'built in'. Wishing you many 'relaxed' flights.

There IS a nifty little gauge called Cockpit Commander. You can enter frequencies, heading, bearing, all the stuff with the push of a few buttons. To me, it's a great time-saver.

You can download it from the Library. https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?do=copyright&fid=98742

Great little addon, in my opinion.

OR, if you want to do it the "realistic" way, every auto pilot has knobs with which you can dial in what you need, heading, altitude, whatever, then press the associated "Hold" to make the AP hold the number you just set on the dials.

Of course, the way Chuck specified woks great too :)

Does that help at all?

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!
