Extra winglets on 737-800

I am not new to flight simming, but the real world often surprises me. What are the extra winglets on the 737-800? I don't know that I have ever seen this before.

They are known as 'scimitar winglets', and are installed on 737NG aircraft (and others) by Aviation Partners, Inc.
