Something I never considered

Here is something I never considered. In FSX once you establish your settings, do those setting change when you select a saved flight to the settings that were established at the time that saved flight was created? I ask because I have noticed that my setting tend to change. Or should the latest setting hold true for both saved flights and newly created flights?

Depends on what settings you are referring to. Game settings are saved when you exit FSX. Some specific plane data/settings are not saved. The save does not capture all the previous data.

I might have misunderstood your question, but each set of settings is locked specifically to whichever flight you select.

If you want each flight you create to have the same settings, do this, it works for me-

Create a flight with the plane sitting on the runway, and adjust all the weather, wind, time of day settings etc, then save it as flight 'A' for example.

Then when you want to create a new flight open flight 'A' and choose the aircraft type you want, and on the map drag it to the new airport, and all 'A''s settings automatically go with it , and you don't have the chore of having to adjust them all over again!

(But you might want to adjust the Time of day if you've dragged into dusk or dawn or night, or adjust wind direction to suit the new runway etc).

Then just save it as Flight 'B'.

To create further flights later, simply open 'A' again, regarding it as your "template", and after the usual dragging, save them as C/D/E/F/G etc..:)

(Tip- I save all my flights with the prefix 'aaa' so that they stand out and don't get mixed up with the default flights, eg-

aaa-Kennedy

aaa-Denver

aaa-London City

etc)

Graphic settings, AI traffic density, scenery slider settings, etc are not stored in the saved flight so they shouldn't change but aircraft settings and things like the position and size of the ATC window will. You can open one of your saved .FLT files in Notepad and see exactly what's saved and what's not. It's pretty self-explanitory and you can even edit things to a degree (fuel load-out for example) without having to load and re-save the flight from inside the sim.

As you have seen, there are graphics settings and flight specific settings like fuel and cargo load. You did not specify. As Jim pointed out, graphics settings are not aircraft specific and are not saved with the flight.

If you use the menu options to change anything related to graphics options, some settings you may have edited manually in the CFG which do not have UI controls for them will reset to defaults. To avoid this, create a custom settings file and move your tweaks to that file and load your custom file on the next flight, then close FSX. From then on, FSX will use your custom options file every time automatically. FSX cannot modify the custom options file when you use the graphics options in the UI, so the default tweaks will not revert.

You DO have to watch Steam, though. They do updates on occaision, and when they do, they put in their default FSX.CFG file again. It pays, I have found, to have a .CFG file saved you can reload off the menu as Mr. Pvarn mentioned, so when they do something like that, you have a back-up you can easily reload. Bob's yer uncle, and go flying!

I've got a few strategy games on Steam and I always tick 'Auto-updates OFF' at the Steam site, so that I can choose to install them in my own good time because there's nothing so infuriating as to find that the game version you've got to know like the back of your hand has suddenly been auto-updated and includes new features, new files and new key commands etc.

PS- as a matter of interest what does Steam actually do to FSX when it updates it?

I've got FSX Gold on 7-year-old store-bought disks and it's never been updated in all that time and it plays perfectly. Anyway I don't think I could update it even if I wanted to.

The Steam site has published the change list with each update. If you care about which file(s) have changed, all you have to do is look at the dates.

It is not clear to me what you mean by a custom settings file -- an aircraft.cfg file? And how do you load the custom settings file -- paste it "over" the existing aircraft.cfg? I'm missing the big picture somehow.

Thx,

I think PV meant the FSX settings, which are in the FSX.CFG file, not the settings for a particular airplane, which is the aircraft.cfg file. He meant that you put in your tweaks in the FSX.cfg file, if any, make any Slider changes you want, then on the Settings page, look down near the lower left area, there are Load, Save, and so on, buttons. Once you have it all the way you like it/want it, click SAVE, give it a unique file name. Then close the game, then restart it, and your FSX.CFG file will have all the tweaks and settings you have done in it.

If you have Steam, it can be a trick, because sometimes some of their update include changes tot he FSX.CFG file, which are a good thing to have, generally. In that case you have to look at the published changelog, see what changes they made to the FSX.CFG file, then make those in YOUR custom file and re-save, so FSX now uses both their changes and your custom settings when you Load your custom file in.

Does that help you see the light Pvarn is shining? :D

Yeah. You make a slider change, and then just exit FSX, then that slider change is not saved. Therefore, the next time you start FSX that slider change will not be there. You would need to minimize FSX, go 'save' FSX cfg, and then exit FSX in order to 'keep' that slider change. Right?

I am usually wrong bout things in general, but I believe you make a slider change, then exit the game, it is written into the FSX.CFG as it's shutting down, so it's there next time. Mine always are, anyway. It's more of an "back-up" you can load from In-game, if you need to, if your FSX.CFG gets corrupted, if....the list is endless. It's also a nice easy way to have different slidr/cfg settings for different airplanes, say shadows on one but not another, or a plane like an F/A-18 needs ship sliders set high, but a commercial jet never see's a boat, so you can use the processing power AI traffic instead, that sort of thing. You can have FSX.CFG files, essentially, saved off for all the different things you may want to do. Or, as I say, if Steam loads a "clean" FSX.CFG file, as it were, and you want to apply YOUR tweaks, and YOUR slider settings, fast and easy.

Well at least 'beating the bushes' replies flushed out that 'rabbit' (FSX.cfg) for you (hehe).

I used Jesus / Bojote tweaks and changed a couple and FSX runs smooth at 30 fps (locked). Set it and forget that part. When I make a slider change I don't CARE if it is saved to FSX.cfg and I can (and probably will) change it again (and again). I TOUCH everythting!!! So if it DOES save slider change, then that is 'ok' with me. Until tomorrow - when I might change it (ALL?) again. Ha. But mostly I fly 'Day' (13:00 hrs), Sat (to 'catch' moving carrier), Aug 8 (summer) and year=(2015).

You do know you can place a carrier, with escorts, complete battle group, whatever you like where you like using AICarriers? It has pull-down menus up on the menu bar when flying to place the carrier etc, where you want it, and moving how you like. Forward, left/right 10° turn, all stop, etc etc. You don't have to wait for one to come along, like a bus.

Note:If you use FSX-SE, make sure you use AICarriers.NET not .EXE. it's written for SE specifically, and uses MUCH less in the way of computer resources. I think it works with Box FSX too but I am often mistaken.

Have fun, and give the latest FSXBA Hornet a try. Jimi has outdone himself on this one.

I don't have to wait for a carrier to (happen) to come along. What kind of idiot do you think I am (don't answer that). I set Time/Season for any Saturday, 17:30:00 hours, and BOOM - it's THERE. Steaming East toward Golden Gate, about 10 miles out. No Fancy Smancy code. xml, dll, or hxll, to edit or menu to navigate. Use my head. And I can only 'use' ONE carrier at a time - so what's 'doing' with the entire Navy fleet being present? Too much 'monkey business' for me. Let's do traps instead.
