Tip for newbies and a Question?

Tip for maybe newbies as I am to FS2004.

I am still running FS2004 on an XP windows PC with only an 80 gig HD. I have added the freeware MyTraffic2006 and I have been adding the Freeware mesh 76m from here:

But I am also updating some locations using more detailed FSX (38m & 19m) mesh when I locate it as well.

Along with the addon EZ Scenery Library (480MB):

I found I was running out of space on the HD. I found that I could use a USB thumb drive to move a lot of these items to the thumb drive and free up my PC’s HD space.

It was easy to redirect all the Mesh on the USB stick, as well as my other add on scenery such as the EZ Scenery Library.

The MyTraffic2006 has a large folder called MyTrafficAircraftInstaller (300+MB) that is only needed if you want to change the Year to an earlier time period. You can store the file to the USB there and bring it back if you ever need it.

So far I have freed up over 9 gig of space on my HD.

Is there a way to move the Aircraft to a USB thumb drive?

Regards

Drake

Drake,

I don't believe so. The Aircraft folder is hard coded to only be accessed from the main FS9 location.

You could try temporarily moving aircraft that you do not wish to use to the thumb drive and put them back when you want/need them, moving others over to the thumb drive as necessary.

Better yet:

Right-Click on the folder/folders you have your FS2004/Add-ons in

Click on "Properties"

Click on "Advanced"

Check "Compress Contents to Save Space"

Click "OK"

Click "Apply"

Choose "Apply Changes to This Folder, Sub folders, and files

Click "OK"

Compressing files using the WinXP compression algorithm will allow you to save disk space yet have NO impact on FS2004 performance. I have done that for years with no ill effects. It was a more common practice in the age of small hard drives, but I still do it to this day.

If you gave a couple of monkeys a box of ballpoints, enough paper, and enough time, they'd eventually finish up writing the complete works of Shakespeare :)
