GAU FILE: A file that contains one or more simulated "gauges". Usually but not always, a .gau contains all the gauges/instruments for a single simulated instrument panel.

GAUGE: Jargon for "instrument", an element of an instrument panel or "panel". Thus to be "on the gauges" means "flying on instruments".

GATLING GUN: A gun with multiple barrels arranged in a circle. As the circle rotates, each barrel is stepped through its firing sequence from ejection of the previous round to loading and firing of the next round.

GEAR: Abbreviation of "landing gear".

GEODE: The imaginary flattened-at-the-poles spheroid used by cartographers as a reference surface when discussing the elevations of geographic feaures. Not to be confused with Mean Sea Level, which varies with local gravity.

GEODESIC: A straight line drawn between two points on the surface of a globe.

GEORGE: Obsolete jargon for "automatic pilot". The modern equivalent is "Otto".

GLIDE: Slope or Path, a system providing vertical (altitude) guidance to a landing airplane; for example a VASI or ILS

GLYCOL: The aviation equivalent of automotive antifreeze. Used both as an engine coolant and as a de-icing fluid.

GPS: Global Positioning System, a system of navigation using a large group of satellites to determine position

GPU: Ground Power Unit.

GPWS: Ground Proximity Warning System, a piece of safety equipment for low altitude flight that uses radar altitude plus other information to warn of a possible pending crash situation.

GREAT CIRCLE ROUTE: See "geodesic".

GROUND CONTROL: ATC facility responsible for regulating the movements of aircraft on the ground within the perimeter of an airport.

GUN CAMERA: Jargon for any aircraft-mounted forward-looking imaging device that records the effects of attacks being made by the aircraft while the attacks are underway.

GYRO: Abbreviation of "gyroscope", usually understood to refer to a gyro-stabilized artificial horizon instrument.
