  3. /images/notams/notams20/nl2k1107.jpgIn early October, we already announced it, and as of today, NL2000v5.04 is available for everyone. There is a completely newphoto-surface based on photos from 2019. Besides better colors, thereis also more detail in the photos. This release also contains a large number of airports. These havebeen adapted to fit the new photo scenery better. From Ameland,Hilversum, Central Zealand, and Texel, there are photorealistic grassfields available for Prepar3D v5 packages. For Eelde Airport, a specialCovid-19 package has been made with KLM aircraft parked on thetaxiway. Furthermore, several adjustments have been made in the fieldsto make them more up to date and better connected to Prepar3D. In some packages, Prepar3D v5 still has some height issues and alsowith the runways. We are still working on that and expect to be ableto solve it in the upcoming releases. The NL2000 team wishes everyone a lot of flying fun with NL2000v5.04. See our download page for all new packages. Source Download Page
  4. No FsWeekend, soon a new release will be available... /images/notams/notams20/nl2k1010.jpgThis year, due to the Corona threat, there will be no FsWeekend inthe Aviodrome. The NL2000 team understands this and hopes that nextyear the circumstances will be such that it can continue. In the meantime, the NL2000 team has not been idle. Ever since thestart of NL2000 in 1997 the NL2000 team members have been developingeverything at home and despite the Corona this could continue. So wehave good news, soon version v5.04 will be released which is based onaerial pictures from 2019. Developing a scenery seems simple, but it takes a lot of time andalso a lot of computer capacity. The photo sets are huge andprocessing them takes up a lot of disk space. The many donations wehave received help us to keep the necessary hardware up to date. Weare very grateful to everyone who helps us with this. The photos from 2019 are not only more up to date, they are alsomuch more beautiful in colour. Certainly in the east of the country, the photos from 2017 were somewhat less colourful. Version v5.04contains, in addition to the 1 metre per pixel variant, anothervariant with 50cm per pixel for the high-end systems. Lockheed Martin has now released version 5 of Prepar3D. DirectX 12and the new render engine of Prepar3D have made the colours of thephoto background much more beautiful. There are also new functionsavailable like transparent runways. For the airports with grassrunways, NL2000 has specially made separate packages of Prepar3Dv5with photorealistic grass runways (EHAL, EHHV, EHMZ and EHTX). Thismakes landing on these fields much more realistic. We are currently working hard to ensure that all NL2000 airportsare neatly connected to the new subsurface. Wherever possible, updateswill also be implemented immediately to make the airports more up todate. It is possible that not all airports will be ready during therelease, which will follow shortly after the release of version v5.04in a separate release. We get a lot of questions about the new Microsoft FlightSimulator. At this moment the SDK for this simulator is still underdevelopment at Microsoft and not all tools are available yet. As soonas they become available the NL2000 team will look into thepossibilities to make the NL2000 scenery suitable for MSFS. At thismoment we will have to wait and see. Version v5.04 of NL2000 is now in beta testing phase. Here are somescreenshots and some demo videos. Source
  5. /images/notams/notams19/nl2k1101.jpgIn these hard times the NL2000 team is bringing yousome new and adjusted scenery. With our project "Moving Objects" we added an extra dimension tothe realism of our scenery. Like: moving trains, sailing ships andmoving animals in Safaripark "De Beeksebergen". EHGG is a complete new version with a new Cirrus hangar andpassenger walkways. EHLE is updated with the extended runway, newground textures, extended tower and a new apron. Also the main buildingon the north side of the field is added. EHAM has an adjustedaltitude and there is a new heliport in the Pistoolhaven and ainproved version of the province of Groningen. There are new packages for: Moving Objects, EHGG, EHAM, EHLE, theNL2000 library, Groningen en NL2000 3D. The new installer v4.0.104 isrequired. The new installer is also compatible with Prepar3D V5. Wehave however not fully tested the functionality of NL-2000 withV5. Happy Flying Joop Mak NL2000 Team www.nl-2000.com
  6. /images/notams/notams19/nl2k1101.jpgMonths ago we announced to update the base photographic scenery layer of the airports in the NL2000 scenery to the same performance as our provinces. They are in the new packages now. New adjustments in Eelde EHGG: Runway 01/19 is now a taxiway and we placed 63,000 solar panels and a new fuel station. We also placed the wind parks Gemini and Krammer and two heliports:Eemshaven and Schiermonnikoog. And we are using new 3D people objectson most airports. There is a new NL2000 library as well. A new installer is needed. Available from our web sitewww.nl-2000.comon November 4. And still freeware. Joop Mak NL2000 Team www.nl-2000.com
  7. /images/notams/notams18/nl2k1218.jpgThe NL2000 team surprised its users at Christmas with the firstpackages of the announced version 5. The photo scenery of theNetherlands is now available per province in 2 resolutions 1m/pixeland 50 cm/pixel. Both based on aerial photographs from 2017. This newsurface is usable for FSX, P3Dv3 and P3Dv4 or higher. We recommendthat you only use the 50 cm/pixel surface on fast computers with afast graphics card. For the less fast systems, the 1m/pixel surface isbetter suited, this has a lesser resolution but is equal to the50cm/pixel variant. The new 3D package v5 is only usable for P3Dv4 or higher. This package includes the windmill park Gemini with the helicopterservice platform and the helicopter platform under construction at theEemshaven. An AI package is now available for P3Dv4 so that the Dutchfields also have AI traffic in P3Dv4 as well. Users of FSX and P3Dv3 should continue to use the old library v4. Not all NL2000 airports are fully compatible with the NL2000 v5surface. In the coming months, we will release new packages to betterblend the airports better in the photo scenery. If you are a member of a flying club or you have connections withusers of NL2000 in a different way, try to distribute the packagesinternally as much as possible. To install everything is the latest installer version 4.0.88required. Also, the manual has been rewritten for version 5. NL2000 Team www.nl-2000.com

  11. Flying Over NL-2000 Part 3 - From North To South By Jeroen Arends 8 May 2009 Last time on my flights above NL-2000 I ended at the airbase of Leeuwarden. For this flight it's my starting point. For those that want to know more about this airbase see my old article here. As Leeuwarden is a military airbase it's obvious that I take a military plane. I chose the F16 in a US livery for this but any military plane will do. Here you can see my F16 just in front of one of the many concrete shelters at Leeuwarden. Picture 1: My F-16 at Leeuwarden which will be my companion on my first leg of this trip. Take off is as always over in a breeze in these amazing flying machines. I remember the time when I often played the simulator Falcon 4.0 (still the best F16 sim on a home computer these days). I make a quick turn over Leeuwarden to wave goodbye. Picture 2: Making a turn over Leeuwarden The I set course to the North. I use little throttle because little is needed. It's easy too go to fast in this plane. The weather is not too good so I stay relatively low. Soon the Island Ameland is coming into sight. It's part of an island group on the north coast of the Netherlands called De Wadden. These Islands belong to a natural conservation area but on Vlieland is a military bombing/shooting range. Above Ameland I turn west and descend to 2000 feet to take a better look at the island. Ameland also has a little airfield for general aviation. Even with little throttle everything goes fast as I'm soon flying over the east tip of Terschelling. Terschelling is one of the best holiday islands of the Netherlands. It offers woods, dunes and beaches. On the west of the island is the famous Brandaris. This lighthouse is the highest lighthouse of The Netherlands. Picture 3: The Brandaris on Terschelling, the highest lighthouse of The Netherlands A short while later I spot tanks on the military range called Vliehors. I also spot a little tower. This tower was almost accidentally destroyed in a military exercise a few years ago. I take two passes over the range and then it's time to leave the area. I am not returning to Leeuwarden. Instead I plan on flying over the IJsselmeer (IJsel lake) to the Province of Overijssel to land at Enschede, home of the airbase of Twenthe. To cross the IJsselmeer quickly I ascend to a higher altitude. I cross the Afsluitdijk which is the longest man made barrier to close the IJsselmeer. Quote of Wikipedia: "The IJsselmeer was created in 1932 when an inland sea, the Zuiderzee, was closed by a 32 km dam, the Afsluitdijk. This was part of a major hydraulic engineering project known as the Zuiderzee Works, that years later led to the reclaiming of land from the IJsselmeer, thereby diminishing the size of the lake." It's still quite a large lake. After a while I see the North-Oost-Polder again. I crossed this area on my flight for my second article about NL-2000. I now cross this area in a south-east direction before slightly diverting to the south west because I want to fly over The IJssel. I soon see the IJssel and the historical city of Kampen. Some nice bridges can be seen here. I follow the IJssel to Zwolle. Also a city with a historical center. You can see parts of the old city walls when flying above the center. The bridges over the IJssel are also very nice. West of the city the village of Hattum can be seen just on the edge of the famous Veluwe. This is the largest forest covered area in The Netherlands. I fly along the IJssel to the south and halfway Zwolle and Deventer I turn to the east. I now cross the green pastures of Overijssel. Overijssel has mixed terrain of pastures, woods, old farms and moors. Only to the very east some larger cities can be found. Almelo, Hengelo and Enschede form a city area and are closely connected. A visual landing at Twenthe in a fast F16 proves to be quite a challenge. When I spot the airbase I first decide to overfly it. Slowly I bring back the speed to 250 kts, then 220 and landing at about 180 kts. Luckily the brakes do the hard work of slowing me down. After landing I taxi to a concrete hangar which is roughly the same as on Leeuwarden. Only the terrain is more covered in the woods here at Twenthe. The airfield is nicely done in NL-2000 as a member of the team lived nearby this airfield. Most pictures of the buildings where taken during a public event at the airfield. You can see an old farm as part of the airfield, a detailed radar tower and many more things. After this leg I take a rest. For the second leg I change to another airplane. Picture 4: My Bonanza on the ground at Twente The Beechcraft Bonanza is my companion for the second leg. This is a twin engine airplane which is of couse a lot slower than the F16 but fast enough for a propeller plane. After a short lunch break I taxi to the southern part of the airbase which is reserved for general aviation. I snap a picture here. Again you can see the attention that went into the details here. I take off in a northwestern direction but after take of I make a turn left towards the Twenthe-channel. I follow it a bit to the east. I overfly Enschede Center. Enschede was a place of disaster when in May 2003 a fireworks storage exploded. The explosion destroyed the neighborhood Roombeek. Today the neighborhood is rebuilt. I leave Enschede in a turn to the west and I overfly the University Campus of the Twenthe University. Again I follow the Twenthe-Channel. Soon I cross the southern part of Hengelo and on my right wing I can see The station in the center of the city. I continue flying along the channel over the villages of Delden and Goor (Hof van Twenthe). After Goor I fly directly west to catch a glimpse of the historical city of Deventer. This city is beautifully situated along the IJssel. Deventer is famous for its yearly book fair in August which attracts about 125,000 visitors. I turn left to fly in the direction of Arnhem. I see Zutphen on my left wing. At Eerbeek I cross the eastern edge of the Veluwe again. This time I fly over a part of this beautiful area. I can see sand, woodlands with little houses in between. Arnhem is well known for the part it played in World War II. The battle for Arnhem is a well known part of the World War II. The battle for the bridges was covered in a dramatized way in the movie "A Bridge Too Far" (1977). The famous John Frost bridge can also be seen from the sky. But Arnhem offers more like the Eusebius Church. Picture 5: Center of Arnhem with Eusbius Church and bridges Also a lot of other buildings are represented in the scenery. I fly a little westwards along the railway and turn around the KEMA tower (a 135 m communications tower). I cross the Rhine and fly southwards. On the left I can see the Gelredome, home of the football club Vitesse and also a large venue for pop concerts. A short while after leaving Arnhem the city of Nijmegen comes in site. Nijmegen is the oldest city in The Netherlands. Its history goes back 2000 years. The historical center is situated along the river Waal. Nijmegen is also famous for its International Four Day March. This event is growing larger and larger each year. It attracts walkers from all over Europe. Leaving the city on the south edge I soon enter the province of Brabant. I'm heading for Eindhoven which is the destination of this day. On the way I overfly the military airbase Volkel. Afer five minutes I reach the northern outskirts of Eindhoven. I fly over the center. A lot of new high buildings including the famous Admirant can be seen. Also the PSV-stadium and the futuristic Evoluon can be spotted. Eindhoven was closely connected with the famous company Philips. Sadly for Eindhoven the headquarters for Philips moved to Amsterdam a few years ago. Picture 6: Above Eindhoven Eindhoven Airport is the second largest airport in The Netherlands. It consists of a military and a civil part. Many European destinations are served from this airport. I make the approach to runway 22. After a soft landing I taxi to the general aviation and turn the engine off. It was an interesting flight over the eastern part of The Netherlands. Jeroen Arends pagroove@yahoo.com www.nl-2000.com

So I take my camera, lunch box and a good can of coffee with me because it's gonna be 2 long legs of flying. The last time I ended up at Rotterdam Airport (EHRD) in my 'standard' red Cessna. As I enjoy flying slowly when sightseeing I decide to take this plane for the second trip as well. After refueling and checking the flight plan I am ready. The winds make it necessary to take off from runway 24. After climbing to about 1300 feet I already have a great view on the historical city of Delft (picture below, left). From the right window I can see the Technical University and the buildings of TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research). The main offices of TNO are located in Delft. As I turn towards the center of Delft I have a great view on the New Church (picture below, right). This church plays an important role in the history of the royal family of The Netherlands as it houses the royal crypt. The last member of the royal family who was buried here was Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands. The crypt may not be open to the public but the church looks terrific from the outside as is it very nicely modeled in the NL2000 scenery. I decide to fly a little further to the north before turning to the east above the Prince Clausplein (a large interchange of several highways). Shortly after that I am flying above Zoetermeer. I spot several residential blocks of flats and a nice water tower in the southern part of the city. I continue my flight to the east to the southern part of an area called 'Het Groene Hart', which means the green heart. This is a relatively rural area between the large cities of the Randstad metropolitan area between Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam. The landscape is more or less protected. But the question is: for how long, as the suburbs on the edge of the area keep expanding. I spot a windmill east of Zoetermeer and an old style mill at the river Rotte. After that I enjoy the view of yet another historical city namely Gouda (below, left). Gouda is famous for its cheese and its nice city hall (which is sadly not yet present in the scenery at the moment). I see some impressive road and rail viaducts over the river Gouwe west of the city. On the east side of Gouda I spot a collection of lakes called the 'Reeuwijkse plassen' (lakes of Reeuwijk) After Gouda I fly over the typical Dutch scenery of pastures and little rivers in the direction of Lopik. Lopik is a little village along the river Rhine (one of the large rivers in Europe) and houses the highest broadcast tower of Western Europe, the Gerbrandy Tower (above, right). In 2007 it was reduced in height to 366 meters because of installment of a digital antenna. Before that moment the tower was 385 meters high. In Christmas time the tower is one big Christmas tree (see it for yourself). Just to the east of the tower you can see the busy bridges over the river Rhine at Vianen. Due to the heavy traffic the capacity of the bridges will be doubled by adding a new bridge. East of Vianen is the Merwede canal. The beautiful canal locks can be easily seen. I fly along the Merwede canal which flows into the Amsterdam-Rhine canal, which brings our plane above the southern part of the province of Utrecht. I am crossing the very busy A12 highway that can be recognized by the modern highway bridge over the canal. Utrecht is the most important rail node in The Netherlands. The rail network of The Netherlands is the busiest in Europe. I can see the large Central Station and rail emplacement from far away (below, left). Of course we cannot forget to fly above the Dom Tower (112 meters high) The tower itself was separated from the church by a tornado in 1647. The church and the tower have never been reconnected. As I fly to the northeast I see a building of the Fortisbank and the University complex of Utrecht. I am now heading to the north in the direction of Hilversum. Hilversum is the premier center of television broadcasting in The Netherlands. Most Dutch television programs are produced in the studios of Hilversum. The airfield of Hilversum has grass runways which make for a challenging landing. On the 10th of April 2004 version 2.9 of the NL2000 scenery was released to the public in a hangar of the flight club of Hilversum. I join the circuit over the patchwork of water and land called "Loosdrechtse plassen" and line up for runway 13. But the runway is difficult to see so I come in too high. After the second try I touch down nicely. Time for a cup of coffee on the airfield (above, right)! Part III Take Off Again For The North! Visual approach chart for Lelystad (EHLE): http://www.ais-netherlands.nl/aim/080131-080313/eAIP/html/graphics/eAIP/LE-VAC-A4.pdf Maps for Leeuwarden are not public as it is a military base (you can turn on the educational layer in Feature Panel to enable city names). After the cup of coffee the weather has turned for the worse. Rain is coming in from the southwest. I take off with the nose of my aircraft pointing in the wind from runway 25. The windscreen of the Cessna shows that is has started to rain. After the climb out I turn to the right to take a look at the center of Hilversum. A little to the north of the center I spot the area of the Mediapark with the radio/TV-tower. In this part of town all the broadcasting companies are located. A short while after that I overfly Bussum and see the historical center of Naarden (below, left). Naarden was fortified in the form of a star fort. After turning a full circle I travel to the Northwest to follow the A6 highway into Flevoland. This area was reclaimed from the sea in 1968 as part of a large project to close off the 'Zuiderzee' from open water. After the closing the 'Zuiderzee' became known as the 'IJsselmeer' (IJssel Lake). After a while the airfield of Lelystad is under my left wing. The Dutch aviation museum Aviodrome was relocated from Schiphol Airport to here in 2003 and has a large area on the airfield. The museum owns a Boeing 747-200 called Louis Bleriot, which can be seen standing on the platform. Furthermore each year the Dutch Flight Simulator weekend is held in the museum (above, right). I decide to overfly the field to continue my journey to the northeast. I see the large Flevocentrale (electricity plant) out of my left window an the many windmills which are located along the A6 (below, left). I continue following this road into the 'Noordoostpolder'. This large agricultural area was also reclaimed from the sea. After a short while I overfly Emmeloord and follow the road to Lemmer (above, right). As I look from above on the nice town I realize that I am now in the province of 'Friesland' or 'Fryslan'. Friesland is different from the other eleven provinces of The Netherlands through having its own language. Friesland is well known for the world famous 'Elfstedentocht', which is a speed skate competition through 11 cities. The tour is of course only possible when the many lakes and canals are frozen. The last tour was held in 1997. Sadly the weather is worsening again. I fly low towards Sneek (also one of the 11 cities). After Sneek I follow the railroad towards Leeuwarden, the final stop on this trip. Leeuwarden is the capital city of 'Friesland'. It's nice to fly over a larger city again after the countryside (below, left). The highest office tower in the city the Achmea Tower (120 meters high) is one of the major landmarks here. I head to the North to land at the military airfield of Leeuwarden. This airfield is beautifully reconstructed in the scenery. The field was built in 1938. It was used by the Germans in World War II. After the war the airfield was first used as a civil airport until 1949. Nowadays the airbase is used by the Royal Netherlands Air Force and NATO for exercises. I park my Cessna on the southern platform of the airfield (after receiving special permission of course). It's a great moment for taking a car to the center of Leeuwarden to eat, drink and sleep (above, right). Next time I will be taking a flight in the F-16 fighter towards Vlieland on my last part of flights above NL2000. 13. Making Scenery As A Team: The Netherlands NL2000 Team By Johan Caljé History For a few years now, FS enthusiasts have been able to use add-on scenery that covers the whole of the Netherlands. This scenery has been developed by a small team of scenery and aircraft designers resident in the Netherlands. Most members are purely amateur but a few members are also professional designers. Before the team was actually formed, most individual members were already designing add-ons independently, but in 1998 Thomas Diederich took the initiative to bring these designers together to form a new design team. Because there was no single scenery package of the Netherlands available for Microsoft Flight Simulator 98 and 2000, the team decided to design its own virtual scenery of the Netherlands as a complete freeware package and to make that scenery widely available to all through the Internet. The scenery package was first launched on FlightSim.Com a couple of years ago and has since won several awards for scenery design. This short article explains how the team works and how this scenery came about. Specializations Within The Team? All members of the team also have their own specializations. Some members are really good airport designers and others are terrain wizards. Other members of the team direct their talents towards web site building and support (answering the tons of e-mails received through the design team's web site), whereas others are involved in software development for the benefit of our vector editing program, a scenery design software package specially developed for the Netherlands design team by Guido van Wijngaarden. The diversity in the team is very important. This enables the team to build on past experience and develop new tools and ideas. Sometimes though, this diversity makes it difficult to form a clear vision as a team. Many discussions take place within the team on how the next scenery release should be and what changes should be made. At the same time, these discussions enable the team to distinguish between what is important and what is not so important and to outline and determine new development activities for future releases. Feedback from users and people involved directly or indirectly with the world of aviation is also of utmost importance. Three members of the team are, in fact, general aviation pilots. This is also important, because people with flying experience have a specific knowledge of what aviation is all about and what things are important to build in virtual sceneries. Sometimes, these pilots take to the air in specific regions of the country so as to enable other members of the team experience and view the real aviation world, thus enabling all team members to discuss and build new textures and scenery objects. The team is also assisted by a few commercial companies and in some cases even government institutes in order to acquire the right information or to get good pictures. Without this information, it would be almost impossible for some of the scenery objects to be made. An example of this can be seen in the scenery package where all of the windmills are positioned at exactly the right spot on the ground. This information originated from a government database system which included all ground coordinates and other essential information. Basic Terrain Designers These are the people working on the basic terrain of The Netherlands, which includes the general infrastructure of the entire country, i.e. from villages, towns and cities, to rivers and canals, and numerous other landmark buildings and objects in all corners of the country. Although the larger cities like Amsterdam (Erwin Horjus), Rotterdam and Den Haag (Jeroen en Mark Arends) are important for flying VFR, smaller towns and villages with specific landmarks are also essential to virtual sceneries. This is especially true for areas near airports and aerodromes. The designers build these 3D objects using a variety of tools like FSDS, SCASM source code and Gmax. In order to avoid objects being designed simultaneously by different members, all objects are allocated to individual members responsible for certain regions within the scenery. These objects are then collected and placed in the main or other relevant scenery file. FSDS Design overview of the Hef Bridge in Rotterdam In an effort to synchronize communication between the various developers, the team uses an internal web site which can be used to report newly created objects, changes to existing objects and any problems that may have arisen (including recommended solutions). All designers receive periodic reports in their mail-boxes so as to ensure that everyone is aware of all pending designs. Important new scenery objects are also reported on our web site for all to see. When these 3D objects have been created they then have to be collected in our scenery database. The team has two Visual Basic programmers, who have developed the team's own Vector Editing Program (for internal use only). This software package has all the necessary tools for scenery design and compilation and can be compared with all the goodies of the most popular scenery design programs all combined into one interface. The initiator and head of this project is Guido van Wijngaarden who originally developed this new software package. Another team member and VB programmer, Johan Caljé, writes new add-ons and the program's special user-interfaces. This tool has a built-in database where all textures, objects en meta-information is stored. All designers in the team have a copy. With the use of this editing program designers can then place, rotate, move or scale macro-objects at their exact positions. What they actually see is a part of the Netherlands in which they can perform editing functions. The program has several built-in tools which enable designers to create woodlands and forests, roads, railway lines, towns and cities etc. Objects can be positioned either manually or even automatically with the use of so-called scripting techniques. Sometimes we get information from several knowledge-sponsors (government etc.) These sponsors provide us with the exact coordinates of scenery objects. Overview of the Vector Editing Interface (for internal use only) A specially written script enables the automatic insertion of these objects in the vector editing tool. Any additional changes can then be made by hand. The windmills in our scenery, all of which are officially registered historic landmarks, are a good example of how this scripting technique works. After a script has positioned standard windmill macros in the scenery, the team then made manual changes to the type of windmill, so that we now have different kinds of windmills all over the country. After a designer has made several objects or terrain updates, this data can then be exported automatically and placed on an FTP server so that other team members can then download the latest data and import it into their own interface. This ensures that all members work with currently updated information whilst creating their own designs or completing their own design projects. On completion of a project or number of projects, the interface can then be used to compile all current information. All data can be manipulated. This may include only certain regions, or even the entire country and all new objects. The newly compiled BGLs are then tested and any problems which may have arisen are then reported back to all members of the internal web site forum. This process is repeated time and time again until a new release can be planned (the design life-cycle). Airports Airports are every important to flightsim enthusiasts. When you fly from one airport to another, there are at least two places where airspeed is decreased and where you fly relatively low. This is where virtual scenery should be at its best. When airspeed and altitude are both low, users expect to see a lot more detail. Scenery detail and object density at departing and destination airfields is therefore extremely important in the virtual world. In our team we have some excellent airport designers. To design these airports, designers generally use software packages such as Airport, Groundmaker or ASD or even just source code compilers like SCASM and BGLC. Our scenery designers generally use a combination of such tools, although some designers prefer just to stick to one or two programs they feel really confident with. All airports have their own specific problems. You need to know how buildings look and how they are positioned in the real world, but you must also be acquainted with the airport's specific procedures and with it's VFR references and how it is positioned in the real and virtual world. This requires frequent visits to the airports you build as well as good preparation work in the way of scaled drawings, object dimensions and good pictures of the entire environment. In the Netherlands project, the team has built all airports and aerodromes currently in use in the Netherlands. But by far the biggest obstacle for designers to overcome is getting hold of accurate and up-to-date information, not only on the airports themselves but also on any important details in the close vicinity of those airports. This is important for VFR flights. By example, Kees Sonneveld has put all the reporting points in the CTR of Rotterdam in the scenery. Now, you can use the approach charts of EHRD and visually see the reporting points. Graham Oxtoby has put several details around Teuge (EHTE), to enable circuit flying whilst orientating on the objects placed in the immediate vicinity of the aerodrome. The same has been done at other airports like Hilversum (EHHV), Lelystad (EHLE) and Midden Zeeland (EHMZ). Also important are the VFR approach charts. These enable you to fly to and from airfields and learn about procedures en route. In the scenery we have built more detailed terrain around the field. In normal areas we only place larger roads. In the close vicinity of Beek, Seppe, Budel and Eelde, we have also placed minor roads and detailed forests, which are also found on the approach charts. Another significant obstacle for designers to overcome is getting the framerates right whilst including all the details you want in the scenery. There's no point in producing highly detailed airports if bad framerates prevent you from flying. All of our airports are built with one thing in mind: all flightsim enthusiasts must be able to fly the scenery, whether they use high-end computers or just low-budget computers. This is why we have built our airports with various density settings: from normal, to cater for the low-budget computers to higher settings for those with faster computers. In the upcoming new version of our scenery, i.e. version 3, as a team we have reached an agreement on the maximum framerate level we would like to achieve for each individual density setting. We have also reworked numerous scenery objects in order to improve framerates. This can be very difficult, as was experienced with the Schiphol Airport (EHAM). Schiphol was designed by Arno Gerritsen and Tom van Maastrigt. Arno is one of the technical scenery specialists in the team. Preview of the new Seppe aerodrome We also have a specific procedure to test all of our airports. In the past, we have experienced errors in the scenery that needed mending and now, based on past experience, we now check everything rigorously before our scenery is released. This means that each airport or aerodrome now goes through various standard test phases before being released. On completion, each airport or aerodrome is uploaded to our FTP server so that all individual team members can put them through these rigorous flights tests. Criteria include bleed-through testing, object dimensions and position, ground and object crashes, texture accuracy and detail and above all, framerate and overall airport accuracy (positioning, radio frequencies etc.). This is extremely important because all scenery components need to fit like a glove in the scenery as a whole. New Projects There are several projects new in the upcoming version 3 of NL2000. Without revealing all, there will be a new version of Texel Aerodrome (EHTX), a completely new Schiphol (EHAM) and a new Seppe/Hoeven (EHSE). Nevertheless, all airports in version 3 of our scenery will include new numerous enhancements and modifications. We are also working on a new mesh and autogen version of the scenery. We are very happy now that Microsoft's new FS2002 scenery SDK has been released. The new mesh version of the scenery will include the creation of altitudes in our rather flat country, as well as land-classes and landable water (a very uncommon thing in the Netherlands). This might be hard to believe, but despite the vast amount of surface water characteristic of the Netherlands, there is only one registered floatplane in the Netherlands and that aircraft is based at Lelystad Airport. The upcoming new version of the scenery will also include many new scenery objects and textures. One example here includes higher smoke stacks and flares accurately positioned and with working obstruction lights, as well as other special effects. Some of the textures used will also include much greater detail and seasonal effects. The cities of Amsterdam (designed by Erwin Horjus) and Utrecht will also include various new landmark buildings and many more bridges (Johan Caljé). As in the virtual scenery, our country is absolutely full of all kinds of bridges. Maasvlakte near Rotterdam Information, Information And Even More Information... Most time-consuming and most difficult of all when designing scenery on this immense scale (i.e. covering the entire country) is getting hold of all the information you need. Although The Netherlands is not really a big country, it's not always easy to just get in a car, drive around the country and collect all of the photo material and information you need. Most team members live in the West of the Netherlands and also have families and private lives, apart from scenery design and flight simulation. This means that we also depend on people outside of the team who enjoy photography and help us out by submitting some of the photos they take, either at airports or of important landmark buildings all over the country. This is always highly appreciated. Military airfields are also a tremendous problem. Bert Kuyper is the designer of all the military airfields in the scenery. So, how do you get good information about these fields when photography is restricted and even the perimeters of these airbases are "out of bounds"? At military airfields, most of the important objects found there are generally secluded, hidden by trees or even made invisible to the eye, even from above. This means that it's almost impossible to produce a military airfield in the virtual world with the same degree of accuracy as the civil airports, although even these are now greatly restricted since the 11 September disaster in the US. Although the general layout of these airfields is correct, a lot of the additional design is based on mere guess-work or, where possible, on photographs that have once been published. Even public air-shows can help when the opportunity arises and these are always visited by various members of the design team. Good Scenery Design Is Time-Consuming... When you find the time and have collected the information you need, you can then start the actual design work. Working alone and designing only one object each evening for a scenery package as complex as ours, would require months, even years to complete. If you work as a team and have everything well organized, it's amazing what you can actually achieve. Whatever the case, scenery design on this scale is always time-consuming and cannot be done by one person alone. This is where the strength of the team lies... a lot more can be achieved in a much shorter time span if all efforts are combined into one. Web Site In order to communicate with the users of The Netherlands NL2000 scenery package, Christian Bionda, has built a web site specially for the FS-community. Here you can read ongoing information about the current project and follow the progress of the team, or read FAQs, the manual and even download required files. The web site also includes numerous screenshots from the current scenery as well as screenshots of upcoming goodies and new projects. A forum has also been set up to enable users to remark on the scenery, to make recommendations for changes or new scenery objects, or to ask for advice on any problems they might have. To visit the web site, follow the link: www.nl-2000.com So How Does This All Fit Together? If you have a large team like ours, efficient communication is the key word. This is why we organize meetings at a minimum of 4 times a year. Some of these meetings are for discussing design issues and progress and others are for organizing workshops where team members help each other out when problems arise. Of course, these meetings are not enough so we keep in constant contact with each other, almost on a daily basis, through the Internet (Chat, FTP, private forum and mail). Without the Internet it would be impossible for us to work as a team. Team meeting (after a long day talking...) The internet gave the possibilities to meet each other, connect each other and communicate with each other. Also the internet gives us the possibilities to release The Netherlands 2000 and to communicate with our users. As a team we can help each other out when problems arise or when technical issues need to be addressed. We encourage each other to do things better, to improve our work and to stretch our limits. The sky is the limit, as they say. Every member has his own personal qualities and talents and can therefore help other team-members to produce scenery like the current NL2000 scenery or even make significant improvements as is the case in the forthcoming version 3 for FS2002. But above all, individual enthusiasm is probably the most important ingredient to build a team from. The only financial costs we have are those related to the many trips we make by car, the photographs we take or even the real flights we make (aircraft rental and fuel). We also pay for the domain name and web site and, of course, the monthly telephone bills for Internet. Most team members don't have Cable or ASDL so we have to manage with ISDN connections or, in some cases, with old-fashioned 56K modems. Who Does What? At this particular moment in time we cannot say when the new version 3 of our Netherlands scenery will be released, but we do envisage a design deadline by the end of this year. For more information on ongoing projects and the progress made by the design team, please visit our web site and subscribe to our mailing list. I hoped you have enjoyed reading this article and also understand more about the technical difficulties that need to be overcome and that good communication, logistics as well as a well-defined design strategy also play an essential part in working as a team on a scenery as complex as The Netherlands 2000 scenery for flight simulator. We hope that this article will also encourage other designers and FS enthusiasts to form a team like ours for other freeware add-on sceneries in other countries. Some countries like Italy and Great Britain have formed design teams, but how about Belgium, Germany or even Luxemburg? We could then fly over our own national boundaries and meet up with other enthusiasts in neighbouring countries. Johan Caljé Member of the NL2000 team The Netherlands 2000 Web site: www.nl-2000.com
