  2. /images/notams/notams22/vsky0216.jpgVSKYLABS Hopper Hot Air Balloon Project for X-Plane by LaminarResearch (work-in-progress). Delayed response and anticipation arepart of the major skills in a balloon pilot "toolkit". Example:Reducing sink rate requires the use of the burner...which results inreducing the weight of the balloon, increasing its buoyancy. However...depending on various factors, such as actual sink rate, envelope temperature and effectiveness of the burner...the time fromblast-valve opening to sink-rate response may take a lot ofseconds. The delayed response of the balloon is demonstrated in theattached screen shot, where a 9 seconds of burning are just about toend. The flight path indicates the future climb of the balloon. This presents many challenges, especially when approaching forlanding in a desired spot. Stay tuned! This fascinating, educational VSKYLABS project isscheduled for release in the near future! 3. /images/notams/notams21/vsky0803/vskylabs-1.jpgThe VSKYLABS 'Hopper' Hot Air Balloon Simulation for X-Plane byLaminar Research development news: The VSL 'Hopper' simulation is already capable of complete full'hopping' flights. Several effective 'cockpit' instrumentation panelconfigurations are being evaluated. Current leading flightinstrumentation configuration includes Altimeter, VSI, Ambient-airtemperature and Envelope-air temperature, AviTab compatibility toallow a moving map and other features during the flights and aMagnetic compass. Beside these, there are the Burner and enginerequired instrumentation (pressure/remaining gas/fuel and soforth). Recommended weather setup is using real-weather. This way, meteorological information for flight planning can be obtaineddirectly from any real-world sources. The Hopper will be carried outby the wind, and the pilot can manage the flight path by climbing ordescending. By doing so, the Hopper will change its flight pathaccording to the wind direction and strength on the selected flyingaltitude. Flight path management is limited and depends on theexisting wind direction and strength. /images/notams/notams21/vsky0803/vskylabs-2.jpgIn emergency situations, or when needed, the back-pack engine maybe used to avoid obstacles or to slightly shift the flight path forshort periods of time. The pilot must plan ahead the landing. This is usually done duringthe flight plan process, and the general point-of descent (location, altitude) is determined before taking off using a map, the weatherinfo and a short navigational planning that takes into account thewind direction and speed in the landing-zone area, as well as theintended descent rate of the Balloon. The power-pack allows fine corrections prior to touchdown. Itincreases the safety aspects of the landing, as power-lines and otherobstacles may be avoided. In real-world Hot Air Balloon operations, aground-crew usually follows the Hot Air Balloon from the launchingzone and intercepts the actual landing site, waiting for the pilot andassisting him during the landing phase, which btw not always goes asplanned. Communication between the pilot and the ground crew is veryimportant throughout the flight. Although flying very slow...flights are very challenging andrewarding, especially when doing the complete cycle of flightplanning, trying to follow it, and landing like in real life. 4. /images/notams/notams21/vsky0706/vskylabs-hopper-1.jpgOK now it is official. The VSKYLABS 'Test-Pilot': Hopper Projectfor X-Plane by Laminar Research (work in progress) is listed now inthe VSKYLABS 2021 releases road-map. The project introduces a highlyrealistic hot air balloon simulation in the form of a powered 'Hopper'vehicle (a single seat hot air balloon). All hot air balloon physics, systems and elements are being simulated. Here are a few screen shots showing the evolving 'Production'prototype. Stay tuned for the *PERFECT* upcoming X-Plane educational /scientific project! /images/notams/notams21/vsky0706/vskylabs-hopper-2.jpg /images/notams/notams21/vsky0706/vskylabs-hopper-3.jpgSource
  5. /images/notams/notams21/vsky0705.jpgFor quite some time, VSKYLABS isresearching/experimenting/developing advanced Hot Air Balloonsimulation for X-Plane by Laminar Research flight simulationenvironment. Development has reached advanced 'Proof Of Concept' stage, whereall core elements of Hot Air Ballooning are being constructed andtested altogether, to include: Burners and hot-air simulation (insidethe envelope), Pressure scoops (skirts), operational Parachute valveand valve lines, Envelope aerodynamics and physics and more. In short, temperature difference between the air inside theenvelope and the ambient air surrounding it will determine the lift ofthe Hot Air Balloon. So the pilot uses the burner/s to heat up the airinside the envelope and the result is "lift". When the air cools-downinside the envelope, lifting force is decreased and the Hot AirBalloon will gradually begin to sink. For more precise control overthe cooling of the envelope, a Parachute Valve is located on top ofthe envelope, and the pilot can pull a line that opens the valve, allowing hot air to get outside through the upper portion of theenvelope, to allow a more rapid cooling of the air inside theenvelope. Therefore, the pilot has the burner to heat the envelope, and the parachute valve to cool it down. By managing these, he canclimb or descent to the desired altitude. Without fuel, the air insidethe envelope will gradually cool down, and the Balloon will not beable to stay up in the air...so fuel management is crucial. The Hot Air Balloon pilot must prepare his flight with a lot ofconsiderations. Specific weather conditions are required to allow asafe flight. High-level meteorologic knowledge is required, as well asaccurate, real-time meteorological data. Hot Air Balloons utilize wind and its direction to be carried on inthe atmosphere (to be drifted). Wind direction and speed changes withaltitude, and navigating a Hot Air Balloon throughout the requiredaltitude layers is very challenging. The pilot must pick the rightaltitude that offers the best wind direction and speed for the plannedflight. Development/evaluation of the projects covers full-scale 4-5 peopleHot Air Balloon simulation down to single-seat 'Hopper', and Powered'Hopper' simulation. These are single seat Hot Air Balloons withoutany basket, and the pilot is hung underneath the Balloon. The 'Hopper' and the Powered 'Hopper' are taking the lead indevelopment and testing, and the experience here in the 'Labs, so far,is no less than STRIKING. Navigating and landing a Hot Air Balloon inX-Plane sets a high level of airmanship and it is very rewarding. This'striking' experience lead to the decision to proceed and developfull-scale Hot Air Balloon projects with ultimate VR experience,***and with high level of educational/scientific value***. Stay tuned for more news on this fascinating project/s! In the screen shot, a VSKYLABS Powered 'Hopper' prototype(with the pusher motor shut-down) is seen during test flight somewhereover California. 6. FlightSim.Com Feature: Microsoft Ballooning Flight In the year 1906 the era of the most famous and at the same time most adventurous all balloon travels, the Gordon Bennett running, began. They were run by the publisher of the newspaper The New York Herald and named after him. The first event, in which 16 balloons from seven nations participated, was started in Paris. Winner is due to the advertisement that balloon, which puts the furthest distance back with the competition. The Gordon Bennett running should be delivered each year repeated in the country from which the winner of the previous year originates. The participants in the following Gordon Bennett running put partial distances back of several thousand kilometers. The adventures fill volumes of books and read themselves like exciting novels. But war and postwar years made it impossible to hold the event in Europe for quite a long tim. When after the Second World War the thought to the Gordon Bennett running revived again, the air space was limited by the iron curtain and at far travels, like in old times, was not to be thought any longer. The policy of detente of the last years brought the desired hope glow to that. When on 12 September 1995 in Wil in north Switzerland a Gordon Bennett running was started, a release was present to the entry into nearly all which are applicable Eastern European states. Nevertheless an American balloon over white Russia was shot by a military helicopter. The two pilots Alan Fraenkel and John Stuart Levis died thereby. For a long time I have concerned myself with the possibility of balloon travel using MSFS. Hot air balloons have been available to download since the days of FS98. Since the release of FS2002 with its improved weather, ballooning in the MSFS world has become more interesting. The elevator hoist in MSFS is represented and needs it, in order to cross with the balloon in the hoists and to make a decent travel. In the meantime I have balloon driving lessons already over 300 FS hours on the embossment and which lies to measure there more near as me times with the real balloon drivers. Yesterday the world-best teams are started night to the Gordon Bennett Race in the proximity of Dijon (France). Winner becomes, who creates the longest distance. There one is already some hours in air. The time record set up the German balloon driver Willi Eimers. The travel went at that time from Wil in Switzerland to Lithuania. The balloon needed 91 hours for the travel. Owing to the good on-line reporting of the French supervisors in the InterNet, I considered myself, to go through why times virtually there. With the on-line meteorological data that possible and only still another good test should be, our daily downloaded METAR is how exact files in contrast to the reality is! The Eurowings balloon (with the attitudes on unlimited, to tinker thus I had to set the fuel from the hot exhaust virtual gasballon fast could) is on the airfield Tavaux (LFGJ) (N 46.51.47 E 05.11.08) whole started in the proximity of the actual starting place around 01.30 Lz and is at the moment whole in the proximity of the real competitors. Times it looks whether we can keep up there virtually. Here pursued the pictures of my adventure and comments of my virtual pilots forum colleague those, the balloon travel with tension: Hello together, in France begins the Gordon Bennett Race in few days. The 15 world-best teams meet around the balloon king to here. I was 3 time in Swiss team as an aid thereby can one on-line ones pursue,wo the balloons straight am here. Here the link http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/ Hello together, because of strong hoists at the starting place was pushed back the start of the Gordon Bennett Race on today midnight. It was originally set on 22:00. Here the left the current position of the balloons indicates http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/news/liveposition.php Here one comes to the current news of the race http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/news/index.php Here the running basket of US the team NR. 1. One considers the good all-round visibility. Here it applies as if possible weight at balloon equipment as little, thus one enough ballast (sand/water) to carry forward can to remain over as for a long time as possible in air! Here the first picture of my adventure. Briefly after the start in Tavaux (LFGJ) N 46.51.47 E 05.11.08 to 5000 foot is it in the night already quite coolly. The real balloons are started. Not all, which 2 of the 3 Swiss team has without the start done (rather surely for meteorological reasons) Up to now only 4 is in air from the 17 balloons. The virtual Eurowings balloon (thanks Stefan for the repaint) is likewise started in the proximity of the actual starting place to the Gordon Bennet Race. (with it I for the FS navigator a good Tracking possibility have, had I an airfield in the proximity to select) Well you are astonished there! But as an old hare contaminated by the balloon virus I could not leave it there times virtually to go through. Owing to MSFS 2002 and FS Meteo is possible that. We made already times an attempt at that time in Reno and all had the joy. For me that is an experiment a good test, how exactly our weather programs are despite in-hour data delay. On the left down can you pursue,wo at the moment the material balloons are, starting from mornings hope I to the comparison FS navigator Positions- pictures to show here, so that it a good comparaison have. http://www.dfsv.de/tracking/gb2003/getimage.php?type=21&thumb=0 Here a tracking of the travel of Walter Vollenweider in the last year, where the 3. Rank was reached. http://www.gordonbennett2002.org/tracking/viewimage.php?type=9 A list of the longest balloon travels, so that one gets a notion, which the Rockers of the air (Balloonist) is to carry out in the conditions: http://www.coupegordonbennett.org/results/times.asp Here small history of the Gordon Bennett Race. One considers the distances, which can be put back with a 1000m3 balloon. http://www.coupegordonbennett.org/history.asp Naturally there are also photos: here a few pictures of Willy Eimers (Germany). http://www.coupegordonbennett.org/pictures/2000/2000.asp Reply at the forum: EW forum: @Klaus: When running started before a few years into Warstein, we were the main program of the Mongolfiade. An enormous experience before the enormous quantity was to be started. To take subsequently, during the winner honour of the German football emperor the memory medal personally against. First navigator Picture of my Position, after the start in the proximity of Dijon. A picture start of the real race competitors. So now am I already a few hours on the way. In a half hour the separation and I come for a few hours in the small basket will try, little sleep will find. The balloon advances briskly. In the meantime all balloons in air and there are go to direction Pyreneeses. Here the last position of the Eurowings balloon After few hours a sleep the weather improved. Nervousness could not sleep any longer so correctly before match. Feat with the narrow plank bed! It became sensitively on this height cool. But the travel is great. Well the Eurowings balloon D-EWG in morning-grey direction the south floats there. Down the world seen from above wakes up slowly. Well we found however the wrong wind there! A poster from old Gordon Bennet time. In the meantime we are again on the correct course. At 14.09.03 the 14:00 we drive to the Pyreneeses too - Olé Espagna - there are it the Pyreneeses! We try times that we pass the hills. The real ballooninst’s running already at the Atlantic coast. A view back to the Pyreneeses with the Delta Echo Whisky Golf, the Pyreneeses well on 15'000 feet driving height were crossed. The EW balloon is now between Pamplona and Zaragoza. The wind drives me on course 180 to the south. If everything goes well, then we should mornings early Sevilla reach. Gladly still more to Morocco would hop, but then we were unfortunately disqualify. Africa is not race area. Conditions of the Race on 14 September 20:30 UTC. For hours I hang firmly over Zaragoza. Property times read in a book that in Spain even the wind makes Siesta. Thus we adapt to the customs of the host country and make ourselves also Siesta. Tomorrow in the early one will be surely the wind again active and us again to the south will continue to carry. The material fellow combatants continued to come the last hours also not. If one looks at the rank list, then the point put about 950 km back since midnight. My navigator indicates 450 Nm to me. Then we are still good in running. Some will ask themselves, why the travel of the Eurowings balloon from the starting point runs more right, as those of the material balloons? If I had had elevator data of the material when starting, I would perhaps still be in the region of Burgos. However after the start around midnight equal on 8`000 feet rose, so that I have safety a distance to the obstacles at the soil. At the night one sees the hills and mountains bad in the MSFS. Over the Pyreneeses I am even risen to 15'000 feet and now hang I on 8'000 feet over Zaragoza. Over France always beautiful 290 it a course drove. When I overcame the Pyreneeses, I drive a course from 180. Are after soon 21, 5 hours on-line flying time still well in form. In the meantime is the 2. Night broken in. This should be the most difficult. The tiredness becomes apparent In the morning in the EW forum gently waked: Good morning Pedro. I hope delta echo Whisky gulf am still in running and the wind stand this morning favorably for you. How long will it still see to last to we you on the first places? Greetings Johannes EW893 - EDAY Good morning Pedro, wish you and your passenger a favorable wind and a beautiful weather for the today's day. Greeting Werner My answer: Morning together, was a hard night. It know at all didn't that it has mountains in Spain also? Has no exact maps of Spain with me. Only one world Atlas and the good old FS navigator are my guideline assistance. Since midnight am I again alone. The colleague must today to the work. Are now for 34 hours on the way and has the same problems, as my real competitors. The fight against the tiredness. The Gordon Bennet Race is the hardest balloon running of the world. Therefore running did not become extinct, since its introduction in the year 1901 yet. Soon the Spanish capital Madrid is reached. I hope that I with the west wind more rueber to Salamanca come. Here newest report of the fellow combatant: Status landing RK 15:15 (UTC) Here the cunning OF the balloons who have already landed: 2 - FRA2 Villey/Buron Pilâtre 4 - USA3 Sullivan/Levin 6 - GBR1 Folkes/butter 11 - BEL2 Berben/Simeons 12 - USA2 Vitanza/PAD ELT 17 - GER3 bringing village/more hutmacher They all have landed in France, safely. Gordon Bennett is exciting as more ever! Six balloons have landed OF distance in CLOSE proximity north OF Bordeaux after travelling A around 500km in 8-10 hours. Leading of acres the LEYS brothers in FRANCE 1 followed on the heels by BELGIUM 1, Philippe DE COCK and Ronny VAN HAVERE. It looks like A neck tons neck ton the Portuguese coast LINE RK the moment and the outcome wants have all the excitement OF A typical Gordon Bennett race. Our amateur speculations using the HYSPLITT trajectories reveal that the furthest possible POINT in Portugal CAN reached Following the leaders acres USA1 with Richard ABRUZZO and JOHNSON Gary on board and the only female pilot Silvia WAGNER and ago copilot Sepp SCHERZER in AUSTRIA 2. They of acres now more over the Bay OF Biscay and wants have landfall soon on the Northern Spanish coast into the vicinity OF Santander. Two German team of acres on their way trailing behind because OF A late takeoffs during the windy inflation OF read night but I suppose they wants emergency give UP and might thus CROSS the Bay OF Biscay. In the night completely slowly on Madrid too we are still good in running and come. Few questions from the EW a forum of my pilots colleagues, who understood slowly, what is there loose and along-had a temperature: Dear Pedro, everything very much stretching. What is, if GER 1 does not get southern Trift and the gas ends sometime too goes? Ditching and then?? or how are the chances for those that they come still over country? I find that mad that you take part there virtually with and we know to it sharings. Further so and good wind. Do not forget to take times ne cap fully to sleep. Greeting Werner Thus. If I understand that correctly, is running probably past, if a balloon landed. Badly for Swiss and Austrians, but well for the Germans. Klaus EW1217 - EDLW My Answer in the forum: Hello Werner, Straight from the bunk came, in order to take over the nightshift. We are here second since this morning too. Otherwise one would not bear such on-line Marathon. The colleague saw to first times in its life a MSFS. Is however inspired and steers the balloon with the vertical adjustment lock lever, like an old professional. Should which unforseen happen, then it can get me still from the bunk. We have better beds, as for example the team the USA (see picture above) You because of the balloon GER1 von Eimers/Landsman do not make yourself I concerns. Those are 2 old Gordon Bennet hare. Credit also the longest travel in this Race put down. That was 1995 in Wil in Switzerland, there the two the Race won, the travel went up to Ludzasraj/Latvia and lasted 92,1 hours the two to have thereby a distance of 1628 km put back. Property of Willi Eimers of this record travel still another video home system cartridge get. The Willi is accustomed the water. Years ago times on a driving freighter he set, first wanted the gasballon, when him the ballast went out, in the English Channel a tanker to head for. But the sailors suspected that in the ballon no Coca Cola, but hydrogen is there, there have it briefly change the ship direction. Another balloon travel proceeded with normal passengers from Duesseldorf. As Willi, is there he suddenly discovered mad wind conditions, with its balloon tourists smoothly to Ireland highly. Ne I make myself no concerns real there. There down at that Spanish Portuguese coast has it always ships, which can help one in the boat. Clearly the balloon wars then the fish. But which is it, if one is balloon work driver with Warsteiner brewery! Property you down a wind map of the Gordon Bennett racedirection as you sees all hoist attached turning sometime to the north. I drive at the moment on 3000 feet direction Salamanca. Perhaps meet I mean real colleagues. Only it harms that no Sqwak has box thereby. Hello Klaus, Auch still up?? thus running is past, if the last balloon landed and it the air line distance measured between takeoff and landing. The balloon drove furthest, to that is Gordon Bennett winner. Today the balloons have so a kind lead-sealed black box thereby. Property you an interesting link over the Gordon Bennet History attached. http://www.coupegordonbennett.org/history.asp You however for Austria it however well ran. Silvia Wagner on that 5. Place is super. Clearly from the rear Willi Eimers comes full power, and so as I him know am with its ultralight balloon surely again with approximately 600 kg the sand on the way!! Madrid became west and goes it to direction Toledo now. Again feet must go, so that I do not get noise with the mountains, those was finally before me there on 15'000. Here the comparison with the real balloons conditions 15.September 07.41. Over the Montes de Toledo. Those entirely map of the Race with all balloon - the balloon D-EWG is 650 Nm far away from the starting point. Owing to the good hoist I progressed well. But in the night a large problem comes sometime to me. The sea! Must try to drive to the left. Thus hoist yesterday look for, like night. From Toledo it went quite briskly down to Granada. To 15.09.03 14,11 had driven in running remained remaining the balloons to down into the region from Merida. At the moment the balloon direction the east drives. Does not want more to Mallorca! At this time the groggy german Ballermaenner wants to frighten nevertheless with my vehicle! But the travel goes on the whole, as I wrote already in former times direction Malaga and that am good. For all, which expect a victory of Delta Echo Whisky Golf, which I must unfortunately disappoint. The whole is an attempt, in order to determine, how exactly our meteorological data is in the MSFS, which we down-suck daily. Owing to the good information, which one take on the official homepage, considered me starting this attempt. One Race between 17 material balloons and a virtual balloon from the MSFS and the whole only still in the time interval 1 to 1.Das are nevertheless worth an attempt. With the super balloon (Eurowings VA Big Boss Cheffe was owing to, there has it times finally which reasonable done) would be to be offered it possible to mine real competitor the forehead. But that would be unfair them opposite. All those the Repaint from Stefan already drove, know that the model a hot-air balloon are. Thus after so 2 hours is the fuel out. Therefore having to ride along around at all here, from the hot exhaust a gasballon make by I the fuel on unlimited placed. My competitors goes out slowly the sand (ballast) and I could theoretically drive on to Johannesburg. That is a pure time and condition question. Ne I as soon as first landed, also to land. The border of the match area is anyway the Spanish south coast. The GER 1 balloon could still win a running, if it creates the curve to us down. Because win does the balloon furthest drove. The time is theoretically unlimited with this Race. Many ask themselves now, why I over running so answer? Feat, i participated three gordon bennett races. As an aid, driver, hobby Meteo frog and girl for everything at Swiss teams Over Granada again the same fate reached us, as yesterday in the later afternoon in Zaragoza. The wind direction was not the desired and we had hard to fight. Here waits we for better wind conditions and I had time to forum questions to answer: Outer one there must add the German balloon still powerfully, if he wants to still win... Or in air remain longer than the others Klaus EW1217 - EDLW Dear Pedro, thus at GER1 I actually did not doubt, I wanted only to know what if. your position looks however good for Malaga quite, still another tidy south wind. The USA is probably already over Portugal and thus would have he a Backtracking to the east to make. Or count on the earth turn with your navigation, so that then to the south continue to drive and wait, until AGP goes past with them? That would be naturally which... Are strained on the further development. Hopefully the food supply does not go to you out... Wish you still much staying power. Greeting Werner Answers: Hello Klaus, theoretically there everything is possible. It still depends on the physical and psychological condition of the crew of GER 1 and like much ballast it in the basket has. The sand goes out with the time. Property already experiences that the pilots already threw all possible from the basket,um in air to remain longer. Then here the meteorology plays a large role. The Gordon Bennett team has all own Meteo teams in the background. I can imagine well that Willi has a good wire to the DWD ( german weather service). If Willi Eimers finds the hoist, which to him the Meteo offers, it would not be a surprise even if it drives there to the Belgian and Frances down. Can you perhaps still perhaps still of the travel of Bertrand Piccard remind. To some attempts is to be driven to it and its CO successfully as first humans with a balloon around the world. You that became actually from swiss meteo service, from the soil, in a kind remote controlled, otherwise that would not have been possible. Are at the moment with the Delta Echo Whisky Golf over Granada. Now I must try more rueber to the others to come, because with me soon the Mediterranean coast will come into view. Gibraltar air haven would be my desire, then I could make a clean range finding in the FS Hello Werner, those have all government inspection departments on board and government inspection department can one not only as position display use (smile) It can present to me well that at the conclusion everything goes only around a few meter and all in the proximity from Gibraltar to the night meal to meet. The people have there still style!!! here still, there one can see the newest map, what in 10 hours for a way to make young in such a way. (one can recognize completely down even Gordoba, where itself Delta Echo Whisky Golf (smile)) Hello together, here the newest message from the material colleagues. FRA 1 in the guidance of running replaced the USA 1. Well Werner?????? Hello together, here a small interim report. The balloon Delta Echo Whisky Golf is at the moment 15.09.03 15:31 approx.. 10 Nm northwest from the airport Granada (LEGR). The current driving height is 13150 foot course 332. Direction Malaga will try to drive. I hope that I can make the next travel report finished for 20:00. Hello here the last News of the material competitors. GER 1 landed (the dear ballast!!) Now only 3 is in running. Now it becomes excitingly. Conclusion-kept in track began. Hello together, sorry, if I as an old balloon hare now slowly flipping. But there a large Show, during I in the proximity of Granada, makes young like a lion it fights that it does not rinse me at the coming night in the sea. If one considers that we are soon 40 hours in air and then this knappe result which one can now expect. Many further one cannot drive no more there from the starting point. http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/news/liveposition.php Here still the last News of the racedirection: Three balloons above Spain GERMANY 1 has landed safely RK 11:00 (UTC) and the 3 read balloons acres fighting RK less than 200 km from the coast for the roofridge place. USA1 (Abruzzo/Johnson) is heading, followed by FRA1 (Leys/Leys) and BEL1 (de Cock/Van Havere). The suspens lets US breathless!! But the weather seems to make difficulties for us?? A thunderstorm is actual in the advance. From the distance one already hears Donnergrollen Therefore we rose again to over 15'000 feet and that were our rescue I would like to present gladly my female copilot Heidi, which boarded me during the balloon travel excellently to you That is a map with the positions of all balloons conditions: 15.09.03 16.41 And again the colleagues write me: simply only stretching! Klaus EW1217 - EDLW As come I only drauf that Malaga should be the goal... ts ts ts ts Pedro, you writes that the south coast of Spain limits the driving area, which would mean, USA1, thus it not still to the east create, but will land in Portugal/Algarve, despite the longest distance wouldn't have won? Or with it is the south coast of the iberischen peninsula meant? Pedro - stop through - you creates that. There is at least 2, you anfeuern: PE - dro PE - dro PE - dro Greeting Werner Answer: Hello Werner, tunes, if you exactly look at yourself the left of the match area, then is after that, as you write, Iberi coast end. As with Algarve is, extracts itself from my knowledge. Look at times the match map left down whether the Algarve still is there. If the Algarve were not assumed now in the match area, then US Boys would have lost the Race, although they would have put the furthest travel down. Rules were made stop for the fact that one keeps them. http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/map/index.php With the hoists, which prevail here in Granada, a crossing of the Mediterranean would be possible. (however only with the D-EWG because of the ingenious fuel problem of solution) You because of the USA 1, there expect I on the basis that wind conditions in Granada, it prevails here rather strong west wind that it the material balloons will take to course east and then I in Granada for them wait here can. But that is only speculation, which can go beautifully into the trousers. Here in Granada the weather prevents me that I could drive a course direction Malaga, although according to telex navigator Malaga would be distant 50 Nm for only about. But that is the match fate. For soon 4 hours I fight here in the proximity of the airport from Granada that it does not rinse me also in large height beyond the coastal line in the Mediterranean outside. Steige on 9000 feet then I let down-fall the balloon on 6000 feet, make windmesure and then go it again highly. Thus I drive for the moment a correct snake line, so that I remain in the proximity of the airfield Granada. The weather worsened here. But I do not come from being astonished, as precisely, simply with one hour delay tunes the MSFS weather. Go occasionally on my Meteochannel and compare run the data. After we have the thunderstorm skillfully drive, the travel continued to go to Sevilla Questions from the forum: Hello Pedro, if you make so further nevertheless still come you on the landing. I could not do that. I became probably now somewhere over or in Novosibirsk or in such a way find. Stops through we hollow you also from there again off. Think times Cheffe to us a special flight will already approve. Perhaps lead it us also his Nobel Airforce one. Greetings Johannes EW893 - EDAY Answer: Hello together, also a blind chicken finds times a pellet. This saying became once true again. After the whole afternoon in the proximity of Granada drauf with wind search . and we only still with a thunderstorm were quickly, had I enough by the west hoists in the region Granada and rose with oxygen (my old Gauloise lung would have me in the pass calmly) on a height of 17'000 feet. Now there the travel goes finally into the desired direction. 270 degrees was already for a long time my desire. In the meantime drives the Delta Echo Wisky Golf is beautifully good to direction Sevilla, in order to drive then at the night still down to Gibraltar. @Johannes: rather will I in the middle in the winter with a dog sled from Novosibirsk to Dortmund ludge to rise than ever into an airplane that by Schorse and Cheffe one flies!! God is not owing to was with a gasballon on the way, had owing to a small manipulation always enough sprit on board. If the travel with a genuine gasballon driven, then had the final landing in Granada taken place My interim reports in the forum: Hello together, I drove in the night more rueber to Sevilla. The balloon D-EWG is at the moment on 1600 feet over the airfield of Sevilla. According to last messages the USA 1 and Belgium 1 landed. Fra 1 still is in air. here the current map. http://www.dfsv.de/tracking/gb2003/getimage.php?type=24&thumb=0 Message of the racedirection One is quietly into the air. Incoming goods now have confirmation that BELGIUM 1 and the USA 1 have landed around sunset September 15th. Both landings were difficult but the crews and equipment of acres all right. Incoming goods DO emergency have confirmed position but believe they have landed into the vicinity OF the read POINT reported by the tracker. FRANCE 1 is quietly flying according the tracking information. Whether they wants able ton beat the the distance flown by USA 1 incoming goods wants know ` mañana '. Good mornings, according to the newest messages FRA has 1, which overhauls USA1 in the Klassement. They drive direction Portugal. The balloon Delta Echo Whisky Golf is in the meantime in the region of Jerez. On a flight altitude of 8000 feet it drives to the balloon FRA 1 on course 80 afterwards the current position map http://www.dfsv.de/tracking/gb2003/getimage.php?type=23&thumb=0 Message of the racedirection They have done it again! They have done it again! Calculations based on unconfirmed position, reveal that the Vincent and Jean Francois LEYS the have overtaken USA 1 during the night around 03:00 UTC. Sunrise for them wants RK 06:10 UTC when they wants probably in Portugal. Incoming goods wish them A safe landing and want report without delay OF their landing position. And again questions emerge immediately in the forum: Now the Frenchmen exaggerate however. The no more don't want to come down? Remain at the ball, aeh balloon Pedro. Greetings Johannes EW893 - EDAY Answer: Hello Johannes. see the Mediterranean and try direction Faro (Portugal) to drive!!! You I know the Ley's of twins, those are hard chaps. She know-learned with the Gordon Bennet in Paris. I perhaps also??? good morning Pedro beautifully that you hold out so for a long time. Thanks for the maps - now me also the valid countries are clear. Although I visited the GB Homepage several times, I do not have paid attention to the map really.... Thus, there Portugal is then with in it and complete geographical Europe with few exceptions. Purely speculatively - would "air refueling" be permitted so like that which would be realizable? The rules say about it probably nix out... You further good travel Greeting Werner Answer: Hello Werner. No the air refueling is not permitted and needs it also not, since the loss at hydrogen is small in the envelope of the ballon. However sand admission would be very interesting. Unfortunately also forbade. A car with the Gordon Bennett start looks up like a flying sand box with 2 adults young in it. They have a shovel to the sand also thereby. You because of holding out has I at all no more problems. If one is for soon 56 hours with the Flightsimballon on the way, then one becomes acquainted with him also much more near. Property determined that I go if I to sleeping, then parking I the balloon in large height and stabilizes it, so that it does the height to me kept. If I have then in the morning again in my balloon go, I perhaps pitch, which somewhere blew me the hoist of the FS Meteo the thing. Then again the characteristics, the hot exhaust come to services. I steige highly, wait 10 min observe the course, if he is good, then remain I on the selected height. Otherwise I let it sink and look for in another height the correct hoist. Thus I already could myself save few times from the clamp. If I would on the way be with a genuine gasballon, then during this travel Granada would have been final landing. After from the official racedirection the message came that the last real balloon landed, we rose in the region of Faro (LPFR) down and set for landing Hello, just from the rennleitung the following message came. The 47th Gordon Bennett is more over Jean Francois LEYS just called ME telling he has landed in Penhosas near Silves in Portugal RK 08:15. Thus I land here in the area of Faro Landing report follows directly here still the new side of the rennleitung with mad starting pictures http://www.gordonbennett2003.org/news/index.php Again announcing itself the colleagues from the forum: wish you a good landing now you can recover finite then... You made congratulation, that good. I am already completely strained on your put back distance covered Greeting Werner After 58 hours travel time we have finally again correct soil under the feet. At the conclusion a surprise to experience had been allowed, which we never expected. More in the report completely down!!! and here the final report of the racedirection Petit Prince The balloon "Petit Prince" named after the famous work OF Antoine de St Exupéry landed safely this morning RK 6:15 UTC (8:15 of Paris time), 5 minutes after sunrise, into the tiny village named Tinhosas, 4km East OF Silves, 15 km ENE OF Portimão, and 58 km ENE OF Cabo de São Vincente (Cape St Vincent, extreme South west POINT OF Portugal). The landing which very difficult and tricky with wind gusts UP ton of 60 kph in A hilly AREA with A plumb bob OF of trees and electric wires. The approach and landing required A plumb bob OF skill but which perfectly managed by Vincent and Franzi Leys. A quick and steep the cent between the obstacles which necessary. The balloon landed without any damage the trees. The remaining sand ballast before the landing which between in A small AREA 60 kilograms, but 50 kilograms were required for the approach and landing. The retrieval crew, including Laurence, wife OF Vincent, Isabelle, wife OF Franzi, and Bertand Deneullin, got A plumb bob OF help from the inhabitants OF the AREA. A portuguese balloonist attended the landing, helped the crew ton luggage the equipment and took some digitally photographer that wants sent soon by email. A Britton which thus near the landing spot and came ton assist. Vincent and Franzi were warmly welcome by very friendly people. This fourth victory in A row is roofridge OF all A story OF passion and friendship. A nice teamwork which accomplished in totally harmony with Luc Trullemans who did A splendid routing job from Brussels. The choice OF the ideally trajectory and furthermore the strategy consisting afternoon OF Monday the in slowing down and waiting during, letting even the USA-1 and BEL-1 team overtake the "Petit Prince" paid off and proved tons the best flat. The very precise managing OF ballast by Vincent and Franzi larva possible A third night, even after the high sand consumption RK the very beginning OF the flight when high altitudes had tons reached. Thanks ton all the competitors, team members and organization staff, this 47th Gordon Bennett has been once again extremely challenging and exciting and has been A nice celebration OF our beautiful sport OF gas ballooning. Walter Simonson (ground coordinator OF FRA-1 team from Brussels) 2003-09-16 14:12:39 Le balloon de l'équipe. I thank all, which pressed me the thumb that the attempt succeeded. The balloon haven to be as beautiful can indicates to the left down. http://mypage.bluewin.ch/Ballooningfarm/photo.html The balloon drove this year, furthest has the name "Petit Prince" Does not come from approximate, because that is the title of a Prosa history, which I read again and again and comes from Antoine de Saint Saint-Exupery. Who doesn't know it? One in the Fliegereikreisen well-known figure. Antoine was not only joint founder of the air France, but also writer. It wrote many small nice kurzgeschichten. Probably it had at that time with flies more time than today to think about the world around itself, which is he straight at flying over, and write these down. A few lines which I in its small band le petit Prince found, inspires me again and again. They are dedicated to the airplane and humans, try the airplane to control: Apprivoise, approx. signifie more creer liens. To SI do m'apprivoises, nous aurons besoin l'un de l'autre. Do serais pour moi unique outer moons. Ever serais pour toi, unique outer moons. Perhaps now you understand, why one petit an aircraft the name "le Prince" give can. Walter Simonson (ground coordinator OF FRA-1 team from Brussels) 2003-09-16 14:12:39 a map with the routes of the balloons in the conclusion phase. How is exactly shown in the map, our travel with a real gasballon in the region would have been terminated by Granada. But the attempt with the manipulated hot-air balloon was worthwhile itself. We have proof received that the down-loaded meteorological data, which is used in the Flightsimulator to be correct and a virtual race with aircraft, which at the same time material on the way are, is possible. For the statistics: Start on 14 September 2003 in the proximity of the actual star place of the Gordon Bennett Race 2003 on the airfield of Tavaux (LFGJ) around 01.30 (Lz) Landing in the proximity of the airfield Faro (LPFR) in Portugal on 16 September 2003 around 11:35 (Lz). The balloon travel took exactly 58 hours and 5 minutes. Of it were 31 hours and 30 minutes travel at daylight and 26 hours and 35 minutes. In the travel time 1515,3 km were put back. The two wind maps show, wind conditions, which prevailed during running.
