  3. /images/notams/notams22/boun0830.jpgWelcome to Welshpool! A lively and expanding hub of GA and helicopter activity awaits with this accurate rendition of the airport - made possible with several real world visits to ensure all references and images are as realistic and up to date as possible. Featuring photorealistic signage, 4K textures and a wide range of 3D vegetation, this small GA strip is one of the most lifelike airfields to date. Welshpool is popular amongst GA pilots due to its exciting short runway, as well as the valley location which makes for an incredibly scenic approach. The airfield itself is unusual in that it is relatively new - with the previous owner starting construciton in the late 1980s, before adding a hard runway and new hangars in 1990. 12. Kerry AirportPublisher: Boundless SimulationsReview Author: Paul MortSuggested Price: $16.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-cover.jpgThis is a review of Kerry Airport byX-Plane developer, Boundless Simulations. If you happened to read mylast review, you'll know that their rendition ofIsle Of Man (EGNS)scored very highly, and so I was eager to find out if Kerry Airportwould maintain their impressive track record. Let's find out... IntroductionOften called Farranfore Airport, Kerry Airport (EIKY) is anInternational Airport in Farranfore County Kerry, Ireland. It is 7nautical miles (13 km; 8.1 mi) north of the Ring of Kerry, and 8nautical miles (15 km; 9.2 mi) southeast of the county's capital,Tralee. In 2017 Kerry Airport handled 335,480 passengers, an increaseof 3% over 2016. /images/reviews/kerryapt/Kerry-Airport-image0.jpgThe airport has developed from a runway of 1,090 metres x 23 metrescommissioned in 1969, to a runway of 1,239m x 30m commissioned in1989, and a new runway of 2,000m x 45m which opened in May 1994. InJanuary 2020, Ryanair announced they would commence a twice weeklyflight to Manchester (operating every Thursday and Sunday) from 29thMarch 2020. Airport WalkaboutAn initial look around the airport was highly favorable. I made astart at the east general aviation hangar, and was presented with somenicely modelled static aircraft. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image1.jpgFrom my vantage point above the hangar, I could see a very nicerepresentation of the Irish countryside, complete with ruralbuildings, roads and farm animals. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image2.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image3.jpgMoving on, I headed towards the main airport car park, which I amhappy to say contained no ortho vehicles (one of my pet hates). Eachcar was a 3D model, and for someone who enjoys the smaller details inlife, I really appreciated this. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image4.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image5.jpgTo the rear of the car park is a fuel depot with 3D tankertrucks. I'm not sure if these are custom made, but they worked wellenough and fitted in with their surroundings. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image6.jpg x/images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image7.jpg In the picture below, you can see a rather nice rendition of atypical Irish built brick cottage...perfect for that long weekendgetaway. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image8.jpgThe Hertz car rental building is also nicely modelled and is yetanother example of the kind of texture quality you'll find on thebuildings. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image9.jpg x/images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image10.jpgIt was now time for me to make my way carefully across the car parkto the business end of the airport. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image11.jpgThe fire station is always on standby with a couple of very hi-techtenders clearly visible in the images below. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image12.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image13.jpgHaving checked photographs of the real airport fire station, I wasdelighted to see that the developer has made a superb job atrecreating it here for X-Plane. The standout feature of the scenery has to be the custom made mainterminal building at Kerry. It's quite removed from the large terminalbuildings you see at major hubs, but strangely enough, I think this iswhat makes it so endearing. The modelling here is really first classand is perhaps one of the most impressive buildings I have seen fromthe developer. The textures are very nicely done and include subtleweathering effects which work well. Smaller details such as signs areall present and work well (even when viewed close up). The people inthe tower control room is a detail typical of Boundless Simulationsand one I thoroughly enjoy. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image14.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image15.jpgRoad and pavement textures are also used to good effect, andreflect those seen at the real airport. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image16.jpg The numerous signs in and outside the airport are some of the bestI have seen in a scenery such as this. Like many of the textures used, these too remain clear and perfectly legible even when viewed closeup. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image17.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image18.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image19.jpgFarranforeAfter a quick drink in the Gateway Bar, I decided to visit anotherarea of the scenery, that being the small and quiet village ofFarranfore. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image20.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image21.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image22.jpgNight LightingWith my visit of the airport almost over, it was time to look atthe night lighting effects. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image24.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image23.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image25.jpgPerformanceThe PC used for my test of this airport was as follows: Windows 10,Intel Core i5, 16 GB of RAM and an NVidia GeForce GTX 1050Ti. As youcan see, it's a pretty middle of the road system, but even with thismodest spec, the scenery performed flawlessly. Value For MoneyAt the time of writing this review, Kerry Airport was $16.99 whichin my opinion represents very good value for money. DocumentationThe documentation included in the package is brief, but covers allthe necessary points. /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image26.jpg /images/reviews/kerryapt/t/Kerry-Airport-image27.jpgOverall ImpressionHaving earlier reviewed Isle of Man by Boundless Simulations, I hadrather high expectations for Kerry, and I am glad to say I was notdisappointed. This is another meticulously modelled scenery by adeveloper who really cares about his work and it shows in spades. Ifyou enjoy flying to and from smaller airports with a bit of character, then Boundless Simulations Kerry Airport comes highly recommended. 14. EGBB - Birmingham AirportPublisher: Boundless SimulationsReview Author: Andrew ParishSuggested Price: $18.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngA Bit Of HistoryIf you've read any of my previouslypublished reviews, whether it's a scenery package, an airport, anaircraft or even a utility you'll know by now that I like to get afeel for the background of what it is that I'm reviewing. I find thatit gives me a better feel for something that I might not have a wholelot of first-hand experience of and puts me in a better position toappreciate it. Not that Birmingham Airport is totally unfamiliar to meas will become apparent! So, treading a familiar path through Google (other search enginesare available), once I'd started digging it wasn't that much of asurprise to discover that the airport we know of today as 'BirminghamAirport' has quite a history behind it. As long ago as 1928, the Birmingham City Council decided that thecity needed an airport, and a site just north of the village ofElmdon, just over 6 miles to the southeast of the city, was one ofthose that was shortlisted. The Great Depression put paid to plans forsome time, but over 10 years later in July 1939, the iconic 'ElmdonTerminal' on the west side of the airfield was opened by the Duchessof Kent and Neville Chamberlain, the Prime Minister at the time. Shortly after its official opening in September 1939 (flights tovarious UK destinations had commenced in May that year), World War 2broke out and the airport was subsequently requisitioned by the AirMinistry for use by both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy as RAFElmdon. It was used as an Elementary Flying School for both the RAFand the Navy, and as a flight testing and delivery base for theStirling and Lancaster bombers that were transported there byroad together with their detached wings from Cofton Hackett, some 15 milesaway, as they were unable to take off from the short runways of themuch nearer Longbridge airport. It was during this period that theoriginal grass strip was replaced by two paved runways: a ~1270mrunway 15/33 which is the forerunner of the single runway whichremains in use today, and a ~750m perpendicular runway 06/24 which wasdecommissioned in 2008 and which nowadays forms taxiways Tango andLima on the east and west side of the current runway. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-02.jpgFigure 1 - A 1950's chart of Elmdon Airfield (courtesy of https://www.mil-airfields.de) In July 1946, civilian operations resumed at the airport, and in1949 the first scheduled services to Paris commenced with services toother European destinations being added over the years to 1960. It wasonly then that control of the airport was handed back to the City ofBirmingham by the government and soon afterwards in 1961 a newterminal, the 'International Building', was built alongside the ElmdonTerminal to handle the ever-increasing number of passengers. Thedemands of turboprop and jet aircraft dictated that a longer runwaywas required, and an extended 2 1/4 km runway 15/33 saw thecommencement of VC-10 airliner operations to New York. By the early1970s, the airport was handling around one million passengers per yearand in 1974 management of the airport was assumed by the newly formedWest Midlands Metropolitan County Council. With the construction in 1984 of a new, larger terminal to the eastof the main runway, the original Elmdon Terminal was no longer neededby Birmingham Airport's passengers. The nearby International Buildingwas demolished, but the Elmdon Terminal remained in use as staffoffices and a private flight terminal until flood damage in early 2018forced its closure. The site to the east of the runway has continued to expand into theBirmingham Airport terminal we know today. In 1991 a second terminalwas added and in 2009 a new three storey 'International Pier' wasadded to service the wide-bodied Airbus A380, and Boeing 747-8 and777X aircraft. The two terminals were merged into one and raised tothree stories in 2011, and a new 400m runway extension, requiring thererouting of the A45 to the south of the airfield, was opened in2014. The new, full length of 3052m was first used by China SouthernAirlines flights to Beijing. Today's Birmingham Airport sits adjacent to BirminghamInternational railway station on the line between London andBirmingham, and just beyond that to the UK's National ExhibitionCentre. Boundless includes amongst its list of the package's main features, the inclusion of the NEC Resorts World Arena and nearby offices andwarehouses, an animated monorail (Air Rail Link) between the airportand Birmingham International railway station, and the modelling of allnearby hotels. Having spent a good 18 months of my life living out ofhotels on and around the NEC whilst working in an office block astone's throw away, I was, given Boundless' description, ratherlooking forward to seeing how well my limited landside experience ofthe airport and its environs had been reproduced. Similarly, myoccasional jaunts to the airport concessions to find something moresubstantial than a vending machine chocolate bar lunch was making mehungry for a trip down memory lane! InstallationMy installation package came, unsurprisingly, fromStore.FlightSim.Com. It is an almost 1.5 GB download which, when complete, will have deposited a single ZIP file on your disk. The Boundless web site states that the package is compatible withWindows, Mac and Linux versions of X-Plane, and lists a graphics cardwith 4 GB of VRAM as a minimum requirement with 8 GB or morerecommended. The screen shots in this review have been taken on aWindows system which meets the recommended requirement. The downloaded package contains a couple of folders, and someinstructions. One of the joys of X-Plane is that the process ofscenery installation has been designed to be simple, and installationof Boundless' Birmingham airport is as simple as copying one of thefolders in your download into your 'Custom Scenery' folder - no fancyinstallers or activation sequences here! If you don't rename thefolder as you copy it, the default ordering rules for the'scenery.ini' file will, when you fire up X-Plane after installation, place it in a location where it will just work. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-01.jpgFigure 2 - Welcome to Birmingham Airport! Making It More RealThe scenery package includes an optional custom terrain mesh forthe airport, and its use is recommended by the authors. Installationof the mesh is, again, manual and a little more involved than simplycopying a folder from the downloaded package into the 'Custom Scenery'folder, but not by much. I followed the instructions - more than once - and I just could notget it to work. The results of following them was always theremarkably detailed, yet completely flat airport that I had seen withjust the airport package. Through trial and error, I managed toisolate the problem to the ordering of the mesh and the Orbx TrueEarth GB South scenery files, and sure enough, when I went back andproperly read the documentation provided with the mesh package itbecame clear that a 'fix' I had stumbled across had restored theX-Plane default mesh, modified to include Boundless' custommodifications for EGBB. Further investigation revealed that thisshortcoming will apply to pretty much any custom area mesh, includingthose generated by Ortho4XP. The short of it is that if you usuallyfly with a non-default mesh in the area around Birmingham you are, forthe time being at least, going to need to compromise somewhere. That, I'm afraid, is going to be a difficult choice to make, particularly if Birmingham is an airport you fly in and out ofregularly. The detail that the custom terrain mesh adds is remarkable;not only does the runway undulate along its length, but drainageditches and mounds and banks of earth are modelled in detail. Comparethe two views below - one with the terrain mesh and one without - inaddition to the obvious differences in the runway, it's possible tosee that the terrain on both the left and right of the images isobscuring the lower levels of the buildings where the custom terrainis enabled. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-13.jpgFigure 3 - View from Rwy 33 towards terminal without custom mesh /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-10.jpgFigure 4 - View from Rwy 33 towards terminal with custom mesh There are a few quirks in the mesh that need ironing out, inparticular a rather aggressive adverse camber on taxiway sierra as itjoins the head of runway 33, and an artifact from the drainage ditch justto the left of the displaced threshold of the same runway, but in thewhole scheme of things these are minor detractions from what, in myview, is a valuable addition to the airport scenery package. For the most part, the images in this review have been taken withthe custom terrain mesh and default landclass rather than with theOrbx scenery enabled. Where this isn't the case, there's an annotationnoting this. From The AirBoundless has included a relatively high resolution orthophoto ofthe airport and an area around it as part of the scenery package, andas always, this augments the realism of the airport when seen from theair. As will always be the case, there are issues with blending of theedge of the image with the surround default landclass scenery andautogen objects, and this is both understandable and unavoidable. What I also found though was that some buildings and other sceneryobjects failed to align correctly with the underlying orthophoto. I'mnot able to say whether the discrepancy lies in the placement of theobjects, or with the alignment of the orthophoto on the ground butit's an attention to detail, albeit not particularly visible from asimulated aircraft cockpit, that detracts from the overall perceptionof the package. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-06.jpg /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-11.jpgFigure 5 - Boundless Birmingham Airport from the air at dawn and during the day At this point, it's probably worth looking at how the scenerypackage blends into the surrounding scenery if the choice is taken tostick with Orbx True Earth as I suspect that there are many who'll usethe airport this way. It's important to note at this stage thatBoundless doesn't claim compatibility with the Orbx scenery and thatwhat follows is my observations of what happens if you try. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-08.jpgFigure 6 - View from the approach to runway 15 - with Orbx True Earth, and without the custom terrain mesh In general, the fit into the area surrounding the airport is goodand features that are missing from the land class driven alternative -such as Hatchford Brook Golf Course visible to the right of the runwayin the image above - spring into life. It really does look rathergood. There are however a couple of areas visible in the same imageabove, below and to the right of the runway, and just beyond the golfcourse and behind the hangars on the right where the fit is not sogood and there are a few other areas around the perimeter of thescenery where this is also the case. Other anomalies caused byelevation of the Orbx mesh around the airport leaves some sceneryobjects - notably the control tower - either floating slightly orembedded in the terrain. The best of both worlds is to position thecustom terrain mesh above the Orbx scenery, but this will affect amuch wider area. As I said, it's a difficult choice to make! A Look Around The AirportHaving taken a look at the airport from the air, what better way toget a feel for the main features of the airport than to take a touraround it? I chose to start just to the north of the main terminal and itsapron with a look at the Birmingham Airport Fire Service building, andwhat I'm assuming - given the appearance of large lawn mower and snowclearing type vehicles in satellite imagery of the facility - must bethe airport's centre of maintenance operations (I would of course behappy to be corrected!). Unusually though, there are no fire tendersparked in or in front of the Fire Service building! /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-12.jpgFigure 7 - Birmingham Airport Fire Service and Maintenance (?) Buildings A feature that's clearly visible behind these buildings is an earthbank which protects the nearby houses from some of the noise generatedby aircraft on the adjacent apron. This feature doesn't appear whenthe custom terrain mesh isn't used and demonstrates the additionalsense of authenticity that the mesh adds to the scenery package. A sign of a good airport for me is the detail in the modelling ofthe apron areas as well as the terminals - mundane things like apronand taxiway markings, signs and other furniture. I'm pleased to beable to report that Boundless' Birmingham has all of these inspades. The attention that has been paid to making the surfaces aroundthe airport look exactly right, from custom ground textures through towear and tear and even repair patches on the aprons and taxiways, andthe application of quality water textures to ditches and other placeswhere water collects is simply a joy to behold. There's also theplacement of and markings and signs matching the charts and photosthat are available in the public domain. In some places the taxiwaylines don't join up correctly, but as a 'feature' of just about everycommercial airport I've seen and a personal bugbear of mine this is anobservation rather than a specific criticism! /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-16.jpgFigure 8 - Looking towards the terminal with the main terminal apron in the foreground Turning my attention to the terminal complex now, from theperspective of someone who's only ever seen the real airport fromlandside, the concourse area in front of the terminal building isinstantly recognisable. Car parks, hotels and of course the terminalitself are reproduced, and the representative signage that's beenplaced on them gives a solid sense of reality. I don't ever rememberit being as empty of cars though. Looking from airside, all the gates are well adorned with thevarious items that are necessary to give the impression of a busyairport. The sharp lines of the international pier are faithfullyreproduced, and it's possible to look through its windows into apartially modelled interior. This remains a feature of the terminalbuildings as you move around the terminal apron towards the pier onthe southern end of the complex where the outside of the buildingchanges to a darker, more reflective glass - as is the case with thereal-world building. A quick peek behind the well-modelled exteriorshows that the partial interior modelling continues to this pier butunfortunately the reflective material applied to the outside of theterminal doesn't allow any view of this; it's not possible to look outfrom inside either! A closer look at the textures as applied to the terminal buildingsdoes reveal some irregularities. In some places they're eitherstretched or compressed, in others they don't properly align withother textures or with the structure of the building, and wherethey're reflective the scene visible in the reflection isn't that ofthe scene in front of it. This is not something that you'd necessarilynotice in passing - I am scrutinising things more closely than I wouldthrough normal use of the airport package. Whilst it's not something I was able to test, Boundless claimsenhanced compatibility withJust Flight's Traffic Globalthrough the assignment of gates to the airlines which most commonlyuse them. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-15.jpgFigure 9 - The terminal complex seen from the north - with the International Pier in the foreground /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-04.jpgFigure 10 - The terminal complex seen from the south - including the concourse area and its hotels Of course, no representation of Birmingham Airport would becomplete without the iconic 'winged' Elmdon Terminal building, andthis stands proudly in place on the west of the runway flanked byadministrative buildings, hangars and other commercial facilities. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-14.jpgFigure 11 - West of the runway - the Elmdon Terminal flanked by hangars, commercial and administration buildings /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-03.jpgFigure 12 - The iconic Elmdon Terminal with the new control tower in the background Beyond The Airport PerimeterGiven Boundless' claims that the package extends to includeBirmingham International station, nearby hotels, offices, warehouses, the NEC and Resorts World Arena it was time to look beyond theperimeter fence. The main terminal building is linked to Birmingham Internationalstation by the elevated Rail Air link, including animated passengercars which move from end to end. Whilst the addition of these cars isno doubt a 'nice-to-have' feature there are some anomalies in theirmovement which leave them jumping around in space away from the track, and not moving in a synchronised fashion from opposite ends as they doin the real world. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-05.jpgFigure 13 - The Rail Air Link from Birmingham Airport to Birmingham International Station I must admit to being slightly disappointed with the representationof the nearby NEC. As it is, in addition to the advertised ResortsWorld Arena, only some of the halls of the main exhibition centre, some of the hotels, a few electricity pylons and some parked cars andcontainers are modelled. The remaining halls, hotels and significantbuildings on the site are missing. /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-09.jpgFigure 14 - Looking across the NEC towards the airport terminal The same is true of commercial parks - I chose to look at thenearby Trinity Park (selected as it's the one with which I'm mostfamiliar and probably the closest to the main terminal) and it hasonly a subset of its buildings represented, and there are partsmissing from the Arden Hotel that sits behind it. A reasonable justification might be that this is supposed to be anairport package, but for me, if you're going to put effort intobuilding a representation of an area close to an airport, then itshould really be all or nothing. Missing buildings notwithstanding, there is attention to detailwhich I've previously not seen in an airport package. Road signs inthe area around the airport are those that you'd see in real-life andare accurately placed. I'll admit, when I do catch the odd glimpse ofa road sign on approach to or taxiing around an airport, to being justa little disturbed to see a sign for a city that's sometimes thousandsof miles and at least a ferry crossing away from where I'm supposed tobe, so these are a welcome addition! /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-07.jpg /images/reviews/birmnghm/t/Boundless-Birmingham-17.jpgFigure 15 - Nearby Road Signs The Future...In 2019, a £500m programme of works was agreed for theextension of the airport's terminals and reconfiguration of theairfield over a period ending in 2033. This work was planned toincrease the capacity of the airport by 40%, from today's 13 millionpassengers a year to 18 million, and to include the renovation andbringing back into use of the Elmdon Terminal. Unfortunately, theproject stalled in 2020 due to the uncertainty introduced by theCOVID-19 pandemic. Boundless has however promised an update to their Birminghamairport scenery package in the New Year (2021). A single statement ofthe sort of improvements that they're seeking to include is difficultto find. Piecing together snippets of comments they have made, we canexpect big visual improvements including texture updates and servicetraffic, and the inclusion of SAM (Scenery Animation Manager) objectswhich were planned for but omitted from the initial release. They'refurther looking into support for Autogate and whether it will bepossible to make the custom mesh work with those from othersources. All of these will inevitably deliver improvements to thepackage as it has been reviewed here. There's no denying that the decision taken by Boundless to tackleBirmingham Airport and its surroundings was an ambitiousundertaking. It's also fair to say that their package has plenty towarrant a recommendation for it. All the features that you'd expect tosee are there and more besides, making it a comprehensive andrealistic representation of the real-world airport. It's when youstart looking a bit more closely that the cracks start to appear and,for me, this first version lacks the finesse that can be found insimilarly sized, but admittedly more expensive airports. Nonetheless,I consider this to be a good value purchase, and an airport that I amprivileged to have in my scenery collection. /images/reviews/birmnghm/title3.jpgAndrew Parish Purchase Boundless Simulations - EGBB - Birmingham Airport for X-Plane 11 See other scenery by Boundless Simulations

  19. /images/notams/notams20/boun1218/t/boundless-alderney-03.jpgBoth myself and Ciano35 have been working on Alderney for severalweeks and we have really seen it come together in that time. We aim tonot only make this our best ever project, but for it to be one of themost detailed sceneries for XP11 available to date. The 3D custom modelling is almost complete, with all landmarksrendered in 3D with high quality textures. We have also created customvegetation to populate the island with more realism than everbefore. We have different variations of 4K trees, with their colorsmatched as closely to the ortho as is possible, ensuring that thedense forests and woodland areas are actually depicted with the mostrealistic colors instead of the generic green seen in the defaultscenery. As well as this, a lot of time will be spent perfecting the nightlighting, as well as many fun details to spot around the airport andisland as a whole, with objects as small as goalposts, telephone boxesand even deckchairs all modelled in 3D! It's really hard to confirmexactly, but we are estimating a release in early January 2021. 24. EGNS Isle of ManPublisher: Boundless Simulations Review Author: Paul MortSuggested Price: $14.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-04.jpgHello and welcome to another X-Planescenery review. This time around we will be looking at BoundlessSimulations rendition of Isle of Man Airport; their very first paywarescenery. The Isle of Man also known as Ellan Vannin in Manx is aself-governing British Dependency, situated in the Irish Sea betweenGreat Britain and Ireland and is rich in history, as human habitationwas established there around 6500 BC. The AirportAlso known as Ronaldsway, the airport is located in the south ofthe island near Castletown, about 6 nautical miles southwest ofDouglas, the island's capital. /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-01.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-02.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-03.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-05.jpgInstallationInstalling the product could not have been easier, as all I had todo was place the extracted folder into my X-Plane Custom Sceneryfolder. DocumentationThe package includes a brief PDF containing an introduction, installation details, a note on known issues, details of futurereleases and finally the contact details for Boundless Simulations ifrequired. Initial Look AroundNote: all screen shots in this review were taken with Orbx TrueEarth GB installed. My initial view of the airport was highly favorable, with a lot ofdetail used in the textures of both the buildings and aircraft. Anice feature of this airport is the animated service vehicles whichreally helped bring the airport to life. All too often this feature isomitted/neglected by developers, so it was highly welcomed. /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-06.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-07.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-08.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-09.jpgA standout feature of the airport is its Art Deco passengerterminal building, and you'll be glad to know that this has beenrecreated in X-Plane in high detail. The airport's car park is populated by well made 3D vehicles, butit was a shame there were not more of them, as in certain places, theortho imagery of the car park showed through. Another thing I noticed, like many sceneries I have reviewed, wasthe complete lack of any 3D people. It was a shame none were present,as in my my view, it really helps bring a scenery to life...especiallya busy airport such as this one. Looking around the scenery, and I'd have to say that on the whole, building textures were above average, especially at this price range! There was also a considerable amount of airport clutter located aroundthe airport, which again, really helped bring the airport atmosphereto life. In my experience, it is small detailed items like this whichmake all the difference to a scenery. For someone who enjoys exploringevery nook and cranny, I really appreciate things like this, so welldone Boundless Simulations! /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-10.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-11.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-12.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-13.jpgGoing further afield, and it was nice to see that the developer hadincluded the airport's fire house down near the shore. By the look ofthings, this was completely custom made and included the practicefuselage. Another feature of the scenery I appreciated was the custom madefoliage dotted around the airport. The texturing of both the trees andbushes was of good quality and again really helped polish the sceneryoff. Both the runway and taxiway areas exhibited good texturing andappropriate markings, and there was a degree of weathering to be seentoo. Night lighting is done reasonably well. As well as the mainairport lights, there are also lit windows for the majority of thebuildings, plus some of the signs. The animated vehicles have bothhead and tail lights which are also illuminated at night. /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-14.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-15.jpgPerformanceUsing the new Vulkan API (not the standard OpenGL we've all come toknow), I managed to achieve roughly 60 FPS at most parts of thescenery, which...considering my system specs (see below), was prettygood I thought. Windows 10 64 bitIntel Core i5 - 3350PCPU @ 3.1 GHz16 GB RAMNVIDIA GTX1050 TiAt no time did I experience stuttering or slowing down. Boundless Simulations aim as mentioned in their blurb isto "Bring immersive and high quality scenery to X-Plane 11, but ata much more reasonable price", and I am happy to report that thisairport is indeed immersive, and of high quality. So what about theprice? Well, the cost of the package from Boundless Simulations atthe time of writing this review is US $14.99, GB £11.51, AUS$20.71. So is that reasonable? Yes...I think so! /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-16.jpg /images/reviews/bounegns/t/boundless-isle-of-man-egns-17.jpgConclusionConsidering this airport is Boundless Simulation's first foray intopayware scenery, I must say I am very impressed! The quality of workon offer, for the price asked, is excellent in my book, and well worthconsidering. When you factor in the custom made objects, the excellentperformance, plus the location, then I really think you are on to awinner! Well done Boundless Simulations. See you next time. /images/reviews/bounegns/boundless-isle-of-man.jpgRegards Paul Mort Purchase Boundless Simulations - EGNS Isle of Man Airport Browse other Boundless Simulations add-ons
