  1. Review: Wings Over The ReichBy Phil Hawes (Caliban Rising)If you are anything like me, you grewup obsessed with aircraft and pilots who flew them. For me thefascination was always a toss-up between the aces of the great war andthose who defended the British skies in 1940. With no warbird to fly myself, I of course turned to combat flightsimulators and cut my teeth as a 13-year-old on a little game calledRed Baron 3D in the little office of my friend's house, who happenedto live across the road from Biggin Hill airfield in Kent. I've been playing flight sims ever since we used to spend all nightgaming and keeping my friend's dad up as teenagers. Now I use thesegames as the backdrop to a growing aviation history channel on YouTube(You can check it out here). If you love the history and aircraft of the Battle of Britain, you'll know that there haven't been too many flights sims which caterto that period. You'll be happy to hear that one company called OBDSoftware has produced possibly the best single player sim for Battleof Britain buffs on the market. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been firing up my copy of Wingsover the Reich and indulging my inner 13-year-old to get my Battle ofBritain fix. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-09.jpgWhat Is Wings Over The Reich?Wings Over The Reich (WOTR) is another game from the team behindWings Over Flanders Fields, which is also a great WW1 based game. WOTR is set to be a modular based sim, which is becoming the normin the industry, and will include additional theaters and periods fromWW2 in the future. The first module is focused on the Battle ofBritain. Another focus of the WOTR system is single playerimmersion. Although logging on to a server and fighting a real humancan be awesome, most of the other games I like to play have sparselypopulated servers. What's more, most of these other games don't offermuch in the form of single player campaigns. With WOTR, you don't have to wait for peak times to play or waitfor a human wingman to watch your tail. Game InstallationAs is the norm nowadays, you will have to install the game via adownload link sent to you after your purchase. I initially had anissue downloading the game, but then just had to click on analternative download location and everything loaded up fine. A word of warning. Make sure that you keep a copy of the zip fileor game files somewhere safe on your computer. The link you are sentwill become invalid after a short period (a couple of weeks I believe)and after that you'll have to pay an additional fee to reactivate it. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-17.jpgGame SetupI have to admit, when it comes to my games, I don't have thesharpest CPU in the box, and I usually just whack everything up ashigh as it will go and pray the game runs. For me, there was no issuedoing this in WOTR and I only run an RTX 2070 Super. What I did have a little issue with, was the controller setup, which I think was more my issue than one with the actual game. I have a very DIY home cockpit or Simpit. I've combined a number of3D printed Spitfire controls, offered for free by Phil Hulme thefounder of AuthentiKit. I also have a separate Pro Flight Cessna trim wheel, Saitek rudderpedals and a couple of generic controllers I've converted into abutton box. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-15.jpgAnnoyingly, WOTR will bind a lot of your axis controls to the samecontrols in the game. It took me a while to figure this out but afterdeleting everything and starting again, I had most of the basic flightcontrols set up. I really struggled to get my Pro Flight Cessna flight sim trimwheel to register with the game and my genetic controller button boxseemed to confuse the heck out of the software. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-01.jpgAt the end of the day, this wasn't a massive problem as my simpitis really geared towards VR where I have to feel for the right buttonor control. With me being in front of the monitor I could rely more on keyboardcommands. That being said, it did take a little something away from myfeeling of immersion. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-03.jpgGraphicsIn terms of the aesthetics within the game, there is no pointbeating around the bush. If you are coming from the Il2 SturmovikForgotten Battle series, War Thunder or MSFS 2020, you are going tohave to accept that this game just ain't as pretty. That isn't to say it looks terrible at all, it's just that youwon't have the cockpit reflections and degree of aesthetic detail tothe game as a whole. Once you get over that, you will start to appreciate just how nicethe game looks. The countryside looks authentic, clouds seem quiterealistic and the aircraft themselves are done to a high standard. However, I do feel that the immersion here doesn't come from whatyou can see but rather how it feels when you play the game. Head TrackingFor me as an avid flight simmer, the key element of an immersivesim is head tracking. I cannot remember the last time I've had topress a key to turn my head in a game. So, you can be safe in theknowledge that WOTR works perfectly with head tracking software. I actually had to dig out my old TrackIR camera and Pro clip forthis game. For the last couple of years, I've gone completely VR, andit took me a good couple of flights to get used to it. As a VR simmer, I do wish that every game had VR support, but Istill found it enjoyable to fly in WOTR without it. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-02.jpgFlight ModelIn terms of the flying experience in WOTR, I felt it was justfine. I felt that basic flight maneuvers felt fairly natural, andcombat could be quite fun. Landings and takeoffs are very easy in this game, and you won'thave the same issues you might have with games like DCS. The aircraft models seem to be very forgiving and the stallcharacteristics for landing won't bite you like they would in othergames. I was able to glide and flare my landings at 75 MPH very easilyfor most planes in the game. That being said, the overall feeling was different to when I jumpinto IL2 Forgotten Battles or MSFS 2020. I felt that I could getbetter input control on these games, but this could very well be downto a setting I wasn't aware of which adapted the input sensitivity. I had quite a time keeping the aircraft centered, and I haven'tbeen able to figure out if that is an issue with my inputs or an issuewith the animation of the flight controls. Most of the time the turnindicator would be right over to the right and when corrected, itdidn't always respond in the way I would have expected. Often when Ihad the turn indicator centered, it would suddenly overcorrect itself. As I said, I couldn't be sure without chatting to another simmer ifthat was just my old rudder pedals or the flight model itself. I justdon't have the same issue with the other sims I play regularly. What I did discover later was that there is a trim auto-correctfeature you can turn on or off. It solved the issue I had but meantthat I couldn't play 'full real' as I would normally want to do. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-04.jpgDamage ModelI found the damage model for the game to be pretty immersive butprobably not that realistic. What I mean by this, is that when you are attacking an enemyaircraft, you can see your hits (usually more smoke than bulletflashes) and when you are hit you will see damage in the cockpit andwings. Wings seemed to come off at the right time and there are some nicecockpit animations when your pilot gets hit. What I didn't think was100% accurate was the speed at which a fuel leak would empty yourreservoir. When you have a dead stick and need to make a belly landing, youcan definitely do it in WOTR. The first couple of times I tried, Ithought that the game didn't account for these types of emergencies asthey all ended in a fireball. However, if you come in at the rightspeed and don't hit trees or fences, you can make a decent wheels uplanding. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-10.jpgGameplayAs I've mentioned previously, WOTR is predominantly focused on thesingle player campaign. However, you can also fly quick combat, whichputs you right in the action, and quick missions which allow you tochop and change between phases of the battle. What I thought was a nice touch, was the fact that if your playerdies in one of these missions it can also kill him in yourcampaign. So, in order to fly in the game, you need to recruityourself a pilot. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-07.jpgYou're given a lot of choice about who your pilot will be, as youcan choose to have one randomly assigned or you can customize apilot. The module I played is entirely focused on the Battle ofBritain, so you can choose which phase of that battle you want tobegin in. There isn't a full list of Battle of Britain squadrons foreither the British or Germans, but there is enough choice. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-14.jpgOnce your pilot is selected and assigned to a squadron, you canname him and input his place and date of birth as well as selecting aphoto. When in the campaign menu, you have access to all of the squadroninformation and can fly missions assigned to you. You can do this inreal time, as in wait until the next mission comes in, or you can jumpto the next action in the campaign. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-08.jpgOnce a mission is ready, you go into the duty room which will giveyou as much information about the raid or sortie as possible. You canthen change your loadout, amount of fuel and ammo, and choose whetherto fly or not. The entire campaign system works in real time so you can't comeback and fly the same mission again later, it's now or never. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-18.jpg Aircraft ChoiceSeeing as this game is currently catering for the Battle of Britainaficionados, there isn't a great deal of choice in aircraft to beginwith. WOTR gives you slightly less. You can choose to fly either as the RAF Fighter Command or theLuftwaffe - tough luck if you want to fly for Il Duce! It's now possible to fly both the Hawker Hurricane and theSupermarine Spitfire, but the latter is only available afterinstalling a free update. Currently there is only one variant of eachof the British fighters available, so if you are coming from Cliffs ofDover, you will be a little disappointed. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-16.jpgOn the German side, you are only let loose on the BF 109, with theBF110 being AI only. Again, there is only one variant of the 109 onstrength. In terms of AI, you can fight against the following German aircraft: BF 110Dornier Do 17-ZHeinkel He 111Junkers Ju 87Junkers Ju 88At the time of writing, there are no British bomber aircraft, butthe Bristol Blenheim is being developed for the game, probably as apaid upgrade, hopefully as a free update. Things I Liked and Things I Liked a Little LessI think by now you've got a good idea of what the game has to offerand perhaps some things that you may just need to accept as being notincluded. I also wanted to highlight the list of aspects to the game that Ithought were really enjoyable and those that I thought could beimproved. Things I liked: Atmospheric Immersion is GreatWhile playing the game, you really do get a sense that you are on asortie in 1940. There is certainly a feeling of anticipation as youmeet with the enemy and the radio chatter is great. The inner historian within me was thinking, the CO is going to chewthat guy out for blocking the airways, but the enthusiastic AI radiocalls heighted the feeling of combat for me. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-11.jpgKill ClaimsThis is really one of the excellent parts of this game. You mightspend 30 minutes trying to get onto an enemy's tail, shoot him downand then come home to be denied the kill because nobody witnessedit. This was a feature which made the previous release from thiscompany, WOFF, really immersive too. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-19.jpgMission DiversityOne of the biggest failings of most combat flight sims nowadays isthat their campaigns are so repetitive. In IL2 Forgotten Battles Ifeel that you go to the same locations, do the same patrols and meetthe same strength of the enemy. I didn't get that feeling withWOTR. What's more, your pilot follows and records your progress fromone mission to another, also unlike many contemporary games. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-13.jpgAI Pilot Skill - Both Friendly and EnemyUsually flying against an AI enemy often leaves you feeling like agod because they are so easy to down or frustrated because they justwon't fight. The AI enemy in WOTR left me feeling like a green fighterpilot just out of training, they were that aggressive and tricky tobeat. The same could be said for your wingmen. I felt that theyco-operated well within the flight and this led to the feeling ofimmersion. Scenery - OKAs I mentioned before, once I got over the expectation for thegraphics I'm used to in other titles, I started to really appreciatethe external scenery. It feels like you are flying over southernEngland. Perhaps it's not the photorealism of MSFS, but it's goodenough. Damage GraphicsWhen you are hit by an unseen enemy, you see things flying allaround you and then suddenly your screen is covered with blood andoil. Although it might not be 100% realistic, it tricked my brain intothinking I was in real danger. This is why I fly these games, to liveout my fantasies of being a WW2 pilot. Crash LandingsAs I mentioned before, the fact that you can execute a crashlanding and actually survive it without some disappointing crashscreen or automatic explosion was nice. There might not be quite the same level of modeling for damageafter such crashes as with other titles, but it was good enough forme. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-05.jpgRDFOne of the most immersive elements of WOTR is the RDF feature theBritish have. When you are the flight leader, you can activatevectoring from the ground onto targets. Unlike other games, such asCliffs of Dover, you will only be vectored onto targets you canactually reach. I played around with this feature quite a bit and it worked everysingle time, just follow the instructions and you'll find a nicelittle target to engage. Things Which Could Be Improved: Parachute AnimationI felt that the parachute animation, at least from the perspectiveof the attacker, was a little bit weak. Just from my experience, itfelt that the parachutes just appeared out of thin air. In most othergames I play, you can clearly see a canopy pop, the aircrew bail outand then a parachute deploy. Not A SimulatorI would definitely categorize WOTR as a game rather than a flightsimulator. This isn't a negative thing in the least, it just means youneed to approach it as such. For the last 15 years at least, I've always tried to play flightsims in 'full real', meaning that I rely on only the cockpit view andthe flight instruments available. You can do this for the most part inWOTR, but you would struggle to switch off the game HUD and all itsadditional information. I'll go into a few reasons why. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-06.jpgNot Everything Is Animated in the CockpitI nearly drove myself crazy during one afternoon before I realizedthat not everything in the cockpit was animated. I was in the Hurricane and trying to set up radiator controls (if Iremember correctly). I thought the button wasn't being bound properlyuntil I realized that the radiator indicator didn't move in thecockpit. I only realized this because I had the game HUD up whichshowed me a changing percentage. There are plenty of other knobs, levers and indicators which aren'tanimated which, for me at least, makes this more of an arcade sim thana true flight sim. /images/reviews/wotr2/t/wings-over-the-reich-12.jpgSpitfire Bug - Trim ControlAlong the same lines as the Hurricane radiator indicator, I wasgetting pretty frustrated with my trim control. I could see that myCessna trim wheel was definitely being seen by the game and was evenshowing a change in the raw data. To test if it was actually working because I naturally forget tolook at the HUD information after years of not using it, I thought I'djump in the Spitfire. The Spit has a handy elevator trim gauge on thedashboard. It didn't seem to change when I spun the trim wheel, but itwas moving during flight. After some testing, I figured out that when I dove the aircraft, the elevator trim indicator would show 'nose down'. When I climbed itwould show 'nose up'. Either this is a bug within the game, or somedesigner didn't do his homework! Flight Model - Stall SpeedsAlthough I think the flight model is just fine for the game, I dofeel that it's different to what I'm used to. I fly the Hurricane andSpitfire in other games and the stall speeds, especially for landing, felt just a little too forgiving to be realistic. I don't think this would stop me playing the game, but I might bein trouble if I got too used to it and switched back to DCS orIL2. Exit Control - Not Used To ItA pet peeve for me, and perhaps it's just me, is that the basicgame interface buttons felt very weird. What I mean by that iswhenever I wanted to exit a flight, I'd always pause the game insteadas the escape key was bound to pause. Not a huge issue I know, but I'm pretty sure every other game inthe industry used similar key bindings for things like this. Justsomething I huffed about but didn't get in the way of my enjoyment toomuch. ConclusionThere are plenty of things to enjoy while flying WOTR, one examplebeing the excellent gameplay. However, when it comes to graphics andflight model, it can't really compare to more modern alternatives. I absolutely loved the complexity and immersion factor of thesingle player campaign. I feel that the limited aircraft option fitsthe time period well, and there is something for everyone (exceptperhaps bomber pilots). I have a feeling that many of the things I found troubling, likethe lack of cockpit animation, will probably be addressed as the gameevolves in the future. So, if you want to really jump into aHurricane, Spitfire or BF 109 to see if you'd survive in the Battle ofBritain, this is the game to do it in. 4. OBD Software Interview With Mark "Polovski" Rogers and Mark "Winding Man" Andrews Conducted by Dominic Smith Hi Mark, thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to speak with us. As many readers will no doubt know, OBD Software is responsible for two of the most atmospheric combat sims available for the PC, Wings Over Flanders Fields (WOFF) and more recently, Wings Over the Reich (WOTR). So with that said, could I begin by asking you how the idea of creating WOFF came about? Mark Andrews (MA): We both came from enjoying Flying Corps Gold and Red Baron and wanted to experience a fully dynamic and immersive Single Player campaign in a more modern game engine - at the time there were basically no current up to date WW1 combat flight sims available... We wanted to create this immersive dynamic single player campaign using excellent AI in a large environment. What area of development did you find the most challenging? MA: Encouraging people to actually produce what they promised...given our diverse locations around the globe this has been the only real challenge. The rest has been taken care of with lots of passion! Is there a particular area of WOFF that you are especially proud of? MA: Yes, the realistic AI and the immersive single player Dymanic Campaign systems both set benchmarks for immersion and believability even today as they have been improved over time and are still we believe the best out there. How does this differ from campaign modes in other combat simulators? Mark Rogers (MR): In one word, hugely. Every generated mission will be completely different. In WOFF for example we have many hundreds of historical squadrons to choose to populate the world with. Squadrons selected by WOFF Manager to fly at the time the player flies his mission that day will be sent on their own real missions, or perhaps waiting on a field to take off to intercept other flights. In other words they are not necessarily player focused. They will do missions based on their historical location and role. Depending on settings there could be hundreds of aircraft up on real missions, no magical spawning in front (or behind!) the player. Together with the incredible AI it forms a realistic, immersive air war experience. There are complex behind the scenes rules and calculations to make sure it's as authentic as possible. We prefer the single player approach to the missions and campaign. Great AI is vital for this immersion and we have that in spades. It also avoids the various issues that can occur in some multiplayer environments - annoyances such as the effort in organising a serious team play session, avoiding team killers or those that ignore the mission or do silly things in the game to spoil it, totally ruining the immersive experience. WOFF includes a huge amount of period liveries and one cannot help but be impressed by this fact! Knowing that many photographs of the time were black and white, how did you go about obtaining all the relevant information? MA: Surprisingly there has been extensive research done in this regard by many world experts - but it is mostly in books and text...so of course no color photos no. MR: Experts have been able to work out tones to colors using known surviving aircraft, known documented info and from pieces of captured aircraft canvas and materials. Moving on to your latest release, Wings Over the Reich, what would you say are the biggest changes, apart from the aircraft and location? MA: We made a lot of changes to the AI to handle the aircraft in WW2 in ways that better reflect the way the aircraft were actually used, as well as improving the dynamic campaign to better represent the changes in the way the attacks were co-ordinated over a larger area than in WW1. MR: There's extensive changes to allow co-ordinated "timing" of flights and raids to join up at the target or on the way and so on. There are of course many other detailed changes we have added since release, for example much better AI collision avoidance, better landing routines, allowing aircraft to break when already concentrating on landing to defend themselves better and so on. The level of detailing displayed in the cockpits is incredibly authentic, so could you give us an idea of how much work is involved in modelling these, and do you have a favorite? MR: The Hurricane and the Bf109 took several months overall to make each. Each was the first WW2 craft we had made for its side (German / British). So for example as no dials, or parts, and no textures already existed each single part had to be designed, texture made and applied. The Spitfire was a little quicker as some instruments where therefore already available and compatible. A tedious process but we wanted the cockpits to be excellent even compared to many other sims and I think we have achieved that. There are quite a number of World War 2 combat sims available for the PC, so were you at all worried that you were stepping into an already crowded playing field? MA: No we believe WOTR presents the player with the best AI and single player Dynamic Campaign systems...this is why we wanted to press on and develop WOTR despite the extensive market coverage - but we have never been about marketing, etc. - it's always been about passion. Does that passion come from playing past simulators, or is it more historically placed? MR: For me a bit of both I think. Apart from the usual recreating battles with friends as a boy with Airfix models, and reading the 'war comics' of the day my interest in air combat came from seeing the films like the Battle of Britain movie and around the same time getting hold of a Battle of Britain pack that contained copies of real maps, pilot kill claims and all sorts of info and kit dealing with BoB. Eventually games like 'Wings' on the Commodore Amiga, then Red Baron on PC got me hooked. I believe we both started on the early PC sims like other old fogies out there. MA: Yeah I think Pol has summed it up quite well - it is certainly the historical aspect together with not really feeling satisfied with combat flight simulators at the time - they generally did not have a feeling of 'being there' so we strove to improve on that. You read up on these early aeroplanes and think what was it really like to fly them in war conditions. These dangerous early aircraft flying up high in the cold thin air in an open cockpit, hoping your engine doesn't cut out, whilst scanning for enemies through oil smeared goggles, and maybe heading out over the lines with the bombardments going off below you, the feeling of awe. Basically the fear for your own survival, and being a small cog in a large machine. We strove to achieve a taste of those feelings of fear in WOFF and WOTR - within the limits of a PC simulation of course. Both WOFF and WOTR feature highly detailed damage modelling. Could you tell us a bit about how this works, and is it implemented differently from other combat sims? MR: We wanted to add higher detailed damage and systems, not only because it would be cool, but also to allow more detailed WW2 systems to be affected - such as showing gun bays when panels blow off and so on. In the Hurricane MKI for example you can now have an aileron slightly damaged and see that component partly broken but still working (with less effectiveness too), then perhaps get more damage to it later in which case it may stop working altogether. This also required much more detailed damage boxes so we can tell exactly where the bullets hit, and more code to allow extra unused systems to be reused in other places. We have now several parts that can be damaged or various panels can be blown off, much more granular wing damage and so on. Also for WW2 much more important is to implement things like prop strikes - not only from belly landing which usually bends the props, but again at different levels so clipping the prop on a tree, to total damage when colliding with something at high speed - so the prop can bend or break in more than one way. A lot of new code and modelling was needed to cope with the new requirements, and even belly landing needed to cope with both on land and sea contact - so a lot more complex work was needed to create all these WW2 situations. Looking at both WOFF and WOTR, is there anything in the pipeline that you could tease us with? MA: Yes we are currently busy with a major WOFF upgrade to bring it in line with the advances in WOTR as well as add some really great new features...and before you ask - yes we expect to release it before year end. Currently we have around 40 areas of improvement some of them are quite dramatically better. MR: We also have some nice surprises coming for fighter aircraft models - hopefully most of them will be done (a large task as always as we now have around 82 flyables, and yes I have lost count!). Many thanks to you both for speaking to FlightSim.Com, and the team and I wish you all the best with WOFF and WOTR. MR: Thanks very much to you too Dom, and to Nels for a great job on FlightSim.Com. 6. Review: Wings Over The ReichBy Michael Hayward /images/reviews/wotr/t/adger_spitfire_on_shippng_protection.jpgAfter many years of success withWings Over Flanders Field, the first of only two mainstream WWI themed flight simulators around, the developers behind it OBD Software decided to try out a newsimulator based on WWII. Bringing in many of the features that made the original a hit, inthis article I take a look at WOTR to see the hype that surrounds it,as well as to see if it serves as a worthy 'successor' to the originalwhile keeping with the theme of World War II. /images/reviews/wotr/t/1.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/2.jpgDownload And InstallInstallation of Wings Over The Reich is a simple process as astand-alone product, but does break away from the grasp of digitalstores that are almost the standard of these days. Purchasing the game from their web site, transactions are securelymade through the third-party 2Checkout before giving you a downloadlink to install the game. Download the installer, run the file and thegame is ready to play. It is also very strongly recommended to headover to the web site and install any updates on top of the initialrelease. In terms of documentation and manuals you will need to learn thebasics, the web site is also full of resources that you may finduseful such as a key guide amongst other things. The forums is alsouseful to find extra help if required. /images/reviews/wotr/t/3.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/9.jpgNavigating The MenusWhen you first launch Wings Over The Reich, it takes you into thefront menu of the game and the theme song starts. Now I don't usuallyhum along to game theme songs, but this one has a very BritishPatriotic feel to it, and I caught myself humming along withoutrealising it! A good start so far. The menu does have an older mid-2000s feel to it, but navigation asa whole is not particularly difficult. Heading into the campaign issimple, as is the decision making for your next battle, and going intoquick combat is also easy to do. /images/reviews/wotr/t/bf109_e4_shot06-01-19-19-32-54.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/bf109_e4_shot06-01-19-19-32-56.jpgInitially I had issues with the game loading, but this was quicklysorted out after messaging the developer and running update for thegame. Sometimes there will be a small pause on 'loading runtime', butthis doesn't usually take more than a minute as the simulatorprogram itself loads in the background, separate from the menu. AircraftIn its current form, Wings Over The Reich gives you two Allied andone Axis aircraft to fly. You get the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IA,Hawker Hurricane Mk I and Messerschmitt Bf109 E4. There are then anumber of AI only aircraft, all Axis, that populate the skies. Theseare the Junkers Ju88 A1, Junkers Ju87 B1, Messerschmitt Bf 110 C4,Dornier Do17 Z2 and Heinkel He111 H2. These aircraft all look great and really fit the simulatorenvironment. External and cockpit modelling is done to a really highstandard with all flight surfaces defined and animated, with smallerdetails included through the use of bump mapping and high qualitytextures. OBD Software have done a fantastic job at replicatingreal-world aircraft for their simulator and is something they deservea lot of praise when it comes to keeping the now 75 year old planesauthentic. /images/reviews/wotr/t/hurri_mki_late_cockpit_wotr_06-21-19-18-10-53.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-19-19-17-13-20.jpgAudio is also well defined and finely tuned to sound realisticregardless of what you are doing, whether its flying low over theEnglish Channel or following close behind a steam train carryingsupplies cross-country. Sounds are dynamic and with a good headset, really immerses you into the world. Flight dynamics are really well tuned in WOTR too. Using datatables over blade element theory, these have been really well definedto give each aircraft their own characteristic in the air. TheSpitfire is both quick and nimble but requires a lot of control tokeep tame, while the Hurricane is a much more steady beast - keepingit in a straight line is a lot easier, but the drawback makes itnowhere near as nimble as the Spitfire! Flying the Spitfire in particular is especially fun, which has seensome major works in the recent 1.5 update to make it flyable. Being aSpitfire Mk.1, it comes equipped with your eight standard M1919Browning machine guns and classic Merlin engine. /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-20-19-20-22-42.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-42-08.jpgLastly I have to talk about the damage modelling on theiraircraft. Something that distinguishes a good combat flight simulatorfrom a bad one is the damage your aircraft can receive and how itaffects your flying. Flying into enemy fire and being shot at a numberof times, depending on where you are hit determines how your aircraftis affected. I've had a number of occasions where I've lost most oreven full roll control as my ailerons have been shot up and have alsolost my engine on a couple of occasions too. When your pilot is shot, flying in first person covers your screen up with blood and makes yourcontrol reaction slightly slower to indicate damage and pain, thingsthat determine the rest of your battle, or just bailing outaltogether. While the damage may not be as well defined or soft-bodyas that in IL2 Sturmovik, it certainly keeps it at a realistic levelthat puts you right into the seat of your aircraft. Fighting The EnemyDogfighting in WOTR is certainly a challenge, especially forbeginners! This is WWII close combat aerial fighting, no auto aimtracking, no computerised support. /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-44-42.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-45-36.jpgOne thing that makes this stand out against other fightersimulators out there is the fatigue system built into enemy and alliedaircraft alike. The longer you fly and the battle goes on, the moretired the pilots become. This means while the dogfight may start outas a high-paced action packed shootout, towards the end the pilotswill start to slow down or even retreat/land altogether. This fatigue system is also closely linked to aircraft damage andmaintenance too. I have noticed that on some occasions allied AI whentaking off, may straight away return back to base soon after beingairborne if the engine or another vital system fails. This I feel islinked to aircraft maintenance which is a factor of the campaign aswell as quick missions too. If the aircraft doesn't feel right or thepilot feels something is not quite right and therefore not up to thechallenge, they will make the decision to break formation and returnto base. /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-51-33.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-52-21.jpgThe campaign in Wings Over The Reich is also both challenging andrewarding. Depending on how battles go, whether you succeed, divert, bail out or are killed altogether will determine the outcome of thewar. You could be four years into a campaign and killed outrightending your game there, or push through enemy lines and make it toGermany with ease. Depending on how you and the AI play, your aim isto gain as much air superiority as possible, while supporting groundtroops in their push against enemy lines and capturing airfields forallied use. The World EnvironmentThe scenery in Wings Over The Reich I must say is surprisinglygood! I wasn't too sure what to expect as there isn't too much sceneryfrom the 1940s that still stand in the same way today, so a lot ofground class is used to define fields, roads and cities. From the airand even on the ground, the level of detail across the entire map ishigh and flying at 6,000 feet is enough to give you a scene not toodissimilar to what you would expect in the real world! After running the 1.4 version update too, the world environment sawmany improvements to the landclass definitions as well as the bordersbetween ground textures and variety. /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-17-56-11.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-18-11-25.jpgIn and around the UK you have the landmarks you expect to see fromStonehenge to the Houses of Parliament, and flying a Spitfire lowaround the Cliffs of Dover is enough to get anybody patriotic! Headinginto mainland Europe, the scenery is then transformed into the Frenchand Belgium landscape that was taken over so quickly by German forcesin Blitzkrieg, with miles of field surrounding your aircraft as youfly into battle. >Night flying and battles are also a sight, with ground spotlightsshining into the sky, lit up by the flak trying to bring youdown. This is both really challenging and exhilarating as you fly inand around enemy aircraft, all in the aim of gaining air superiority. Seasons have also been nicely defined with the landscape changingdepending on what time of the year you fly in. Snow covered thelandscape during the winters while summers would be bright and clear. /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-18-15-08.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-18-16-21.jpgThe ground is traversed by AI vehicles, boats and troop movements, both allied and enemy. Locomotives will follow train lines betweencities and towns while vehicles will generally follow roads, unlessheading to specific destinations. Seaborne movements are a lot moredynamic as they don't particularly have a set path to follow, makingfor some interesting scout and shooting scenarios. Be aware for AIaircraft too, whether they are high-altitude bombers or escortfighters. These will be sure to give you some hassle! Clouds and rain however do feel a little basic, if notdated. Clouds are volumetric, but otherwise don't add too much to thesky environment. I would certainly like to see the weather aspect ofthe game improved in future updates, bringing it up to scratch withthe modern technologies that are now available! The developers areaware of this and it's something they are certainly looking into. Opinion And Closing RemarksI have certainly enjoyed playing Wings Over The Reich and willcertainly continue to play it! The dynamic campaign is certainly a lotof fun and each play through will always be slightly different, especially when deciding the outcome of the war! /images/reviews/wotr/t/shot06-21-19-18-50-05.jpg /images/reviews/wotr/t/sptifre_mkia_cockpit_wotr_04-24-19-11-15-06.jpgFlying in WOTR gives you a strong feeling of flying the old fighterplanes over southern England and Normandy, and really immerses youinto the world, putting you right into the seat of the Hurricane,Spitfire or Messerschmitt you fly. The campaign is also intuitive and gives you a lot of opportunityfor decision making. How does protecting the ground troops affect airsuperiority? Will leaving the ship convoy to join in another missionfurther afield affect their survival rate on arrival? These are alldecisions you need to make which could potentially change the outcomeof the war. If you're looking for a realistic WWII simulator, then I don'tthink you can get much better than this! /images/reviews/wotr/t/6.jpgThe Technical BitMinimum RequirementsIntel 3.0 GHz CPU Speed or higherNVidia Graphics card, 660 GTX or above with 1.5 GB VIDEO RAMATI graphics card with 2 GB+ RAMWindows 7 (64-bit) or newer6 GB RAM or higherReview PC SpecMicrosoft Flight Simulator X: Steam EditionWindows 10 Professional6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 6700K Processor16 GB RAMNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745/images/reviews/wotr/wotr.jpg Michael Hayward Purchase Wings Over The Reich
