  5. /images/notams/notams22/care0902.jpgKnown as one of the most versatile aircraft in the world. Thislegendary Swiss turboprop PC12 is rather a wonderful transport, andthe sort of exotic and out-of-the-way places to which you can takefamily, friends and business associates. Whether you want to travel quickly in executive comfort, land on ashort runway in a remote location or carry large amount of cargo, thePC12 will do all of it and do it well. Once off the runway (with a 2650 foot takeoff distance at maxweight), the PC12 can climb at 1920 FPM. With reverse beta, landingdistance over a 50-foot obstacle is just 1830 feet. It was first introduced in 1994, the PC12 is a relatively youngaircraft that has managed to earn a place in the competitive world ofaviation, becoming one of today’s preferred single turbo props. The creation of this plane was inspired by the well know AlpsMounts which transmit strength, beauty and power. 7. Pilatus PC-12Publisher: CarenadoReview Author: Rohan NairSuggested Price: $34.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngFact: Versatility is now considered ade facto trait of human character. There is no doubt that one has tobe versatile in these dynamic and challenging times in order to getthrough the epic known as life. This requirement, as we increasinglyrely on technological platforms for our sustenance, applies no less toutility aircraft as it does to human life. Pilatus, a now nearly 80year old Swiss aircraft manufacturer, seem to have understood andadapted the aforementioned requirement into their productionlines. The result of this is the Pilatus PC-12. A single engineturboprop aircraft that is fast, reliable, modern, capable ofoperating from unpaved surfaces, capable of short takeoffs andlandings, and carrying an appreciable amount of passengers or cargofor its size. The powerful and reliable Pratt and Whitney PT6A-67engine that powers the PC-12 allows for excellent performance in hotand high climates. The versatile nature of the PC-12 means it hasfound a niche in corporate passenger transport, cargo transport, outback operations, medical flight services, and even in militariesfor applications like aerial surveillance. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_7.jpgThe first PC-12 flew in 1991 and since then Pilatus have made over1,500 of them. The PC-12 has undergone a number of improvements overthe years. The model has evolved to feature a higher MTOW, morepowerful engines, modern avionics, reduced noise, four bladepropellers and speed and range improvements. The latest version is thePC-12NG which features increased cruise speed and climb performanceowing to the new powerful PT6A-67P engine. The NG also sports aHoneywell Primus Apex glass cockpit, automatic pressurisation controland enhanced winglets. A variant of the NG known as the PC-12M, whereM stands for multipurpose, features more powerful electrical systemsto ensure ample availability of power for applications such as aerialsurveillance, medical systems and the like. A proven, time tested, robust and capable aircraft like the PC-12really needs a place in the flight simulation world. It has one inX-Plane 11 thanks to the well known developers, Carenado. Will theirrendition of the PC-12 live up to the expectations that we have forthem in recent times? Read on to find out. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_3.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_4.jpgUSD $34.95 and a 602 MB download stand in your way of getting theCarenado PC-12 onto your system from the FS Pilot Shop. If you're usedto installers then break that habit because you'll have to manuallydrop a folder into the aircraft directory of X-Plane 11 if you want tofly the PC-12. Do this, and the PC-12 awaits you in X-Plane 11 in eightliveries. Carenado say that you'll need a 3.5 GHz i5-6600K or better,16-24 GB of RAM and a DX12 capable graphics card with 4GB or more ofVRAM that parallels or overtakes a GTX 1070 to get the best of theirproduct. Thankfully, these aren't the minimum system requirements. Ifyou can X-Plane 11 on your PC, you can run the Carenado PC-12 as wellin theory at least. I did the review on a 3.6 GHz 4th generation i7with 16GB of RAM and a 4GB GTX 960M running a 64 bit Windows 10 OSwith X-Plane 11.11r2. Are you wondering what variant of the PC-12 have Carenadosimulated? It's not the PC-12NG. It's not the PC-12/47. It's thePC-12/45. The 45 is the second variant of the PC-12 first produced in1996 and features an EFIS as opposed to the round dial gauges of theoriginal variant, the 41. It also sports a higher MTOW of about 9,900lbs. Oddly, Carenado haven't mentioned anywhere that this is thevariant they have simulated. A little digging around in the aircraftconfiguration file revealed that some components may have been made byThranda Design with whom Carenado have worked with in some of theirother projects. The X-Plane 11 aircraft selection menu also states thedesign studio of the PC-12 as Carenado/Thranda Design. Before weproceed, please bear in mind that the latest version of the PC-12 attime of writing this is v1.2. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_5.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_6.jpgThe first impression an add-on makes in the sim is an importantone. More often than not, we go by looks in this respect. It's anatural tendency to judge based on looks. This tendency is aptly, yetsomewhat subtly, outlined in the idiom: "Don't judge a book by itscover". Do pay heed to that bit of advice in most walks of life butdon't feel any shame in not paying heed to it with regards to theCarenado PC-12. I say so because it feels good to start on a positivenote. The PC-12 is visually impressive on the inside andoutside. You'll probably spend most of your time in the virtualcockpit so let's head in and take a look. The screen shots probably speak for themselves. The 3D virtualcockpit is undoubtedly realistic and detailed. High definitiontextures and reflective gauges adorn the cockpit. Despite all that, Isensed a lack of a certain type of 'crispness' to the textures of thegauges that I've seen in other add-ons. It might just be me but on thewhole, the virtual cockpit of the Carenado PC-12 is a nice place to bein. Explore around a bit and you'll find some animations to tinkerwith such as sun shades and movable armrests. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_1.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_2.jpgIn comparison to theCarenado C90,the PC-12 doesn't have as many animations. It's up to you if you wantto give some weight to that. I personally don't mind it since itdoesn't come in the way of me flying the plane. It's more important tohave as many buttons and controls as practically possible working inthe cockpit and that is indeed the case with the PC-12. The majorityof switches found in the cockpit are easily operable andaccessible. Accessible because of the pre-configured quick look viewsthat allow you to seamlessly get to any portion of the cockpit usingthe 0-9 keys on the keyboard numpad. A panel that can be accessed byclicking the 'C' in the lower left hand corner allows for a change ofview among other useful things such as adjusting the field of view andoverall volume. It is possible to bring up a 2D popup of the autopilot panel byclicking the 'A' in the same area. Cockpit night lighting does itsjob but I feel that the light flows could have modeled to be a lotbetter. Don't always look forward in the cockpit because there is anice virtual cabin right behind you that sports a couple ofanimations, flood lights and reading lights. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_9.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_10.jpgThe Carenado PC-12 looks fabulous on the outside. The developershave leveraged on Physically Based Rendering (PBR) to accurately modellight flows to allow for a more photorealistic appearance of theexterior. Detailed reflection and lighting effects give the exterioran extra bit of eye candy. Seven high definition liveries areavailable for the PC-12. The passenger and cargo doors can be operatedby means of a panel accessed by clicking the 'O' in the lower lefthand side of the screen. From the same panel, static elements such astraffic cones and engine inlet and outlet covers among other optionscan be toggled. If you're wondering what the black pod on the rightwing is then it's the housing for the weather radar. All this prettiness comes at the price in lower frame rates whichis a problem on a system like mine that is creeping by the day intothe lower end of the performance spectrum. The impact is somewhatprofound on a low end system particularly in areas that feature greatamounts of detail and weather. Pretty as the PC-12 may be, the aircraft can be enjoyed completelyonly if it sports sound systems. The aircraft's systems and theassociated procedures are not very complex permitting operation by asingle pilot comfortably. The PC-12 is certainly a friendly aircraftfor pilots systems-wise. Carenado have simulated the PC-12/45 and havefeatured the Bendix/King avionics suite. In the cockpit, you'll findan EFIS along with two Garmin GNS530 GPS units (X-Plane 11 default)and an Avidyne Multi-Function Display. This is very much what youcould find in one of the real life PC-12/45s. Almost all of thesystems have been realistically simulated. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_11.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_12.jpgThe Avidyne MFD, in real life however, is much more capable. It canshow weather overlays, traffic data, flight plan information and evenincorporates a Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS). Carenado'srendition of it, unfortunately, is limited to weather overlays, traffic data and just the flight plan path. There were reports ofissues with the systems especially when starting from a cold and darkstate but these have been resolved as of version 1.2. Carenado claimthat the PC-12 is compatible with Reality XP's GTN 750 and the Goodwayflight planner for X-Plane. I can't comment on how well the PC-12works with the other two products as I do not own them. On the whole, systems of the PC-12 have been fairly accurately modeled and work wellbe it avionics, navigation, automation, pressurization, electrics, hydraulics, air conditioning or fuel. The PC-12 earns its reputation from its versatility andperformance. The aircraft flew and handled as I expected it to. Likethe real aircraft, the Carenado PC-12 is nimble and can get in and outof tight spots rather easily. It is a joy to fly manually owing to itsstability and simple systems. If you would still like the autopilot, though, then you should know that it is sufficiently capable and worksvery well. Engine behavior is fairly realistic within the limitationsof X-Plane 11's turboprop simulation model. Nevertheless, the power ofthe reliable PT6A-67B engine of the PC-12/45 has been accuratelysimulated. Excellent climb performance and short takeoffs characterizethe PC-12's powerplant and this is what you'll see in the sim. Ease ofoperation and inherent stability in all phases of flight combined withreliability, payload capacity, and a certain amount of ruggednessmakes this aircraft the ace of its class. Fly in and out of Lukla ifyou want to have fun with the PC-12's capabilities. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_13.jpg /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_14.jpgNo matter how well behaved and simple an aircraft is to fly, youwon't be able to fly it well unless you have a good suite ofdocumentation or you are familiar with it beforehand. Have Carenadodone well enough in the arena of documentation? Yes. Well enough forthe casual simmer to quickly understand the EFIS, autopilot and followthe normal procedures to get off the ground and bring it backdown. Pedantics and hardcore simmers, however, may not be sopleased. While they may like the inclusion of emergency procedures, there's the usual lack of adequate data to accurately plan forfuel. More surprisingly, there is no data about important speeds likerotation speed (Vr), best angle of climb (Vx), best rate of climb (Vy)and recommended climb speeds to cruise altitudes. Cruise performancetables are available and they may help with making rough estimationsfor the fuel required for a flight. Turboprop engine noise is not quite music to the ears. Some wouldlikely describe it as a crass cacophony. But to us aviators, the buzzof the turboprop engine is synonymous to the beating of the humanheart and is thus indispensable to life be it your own or theairplane's. Carenado have fared well in this respect. The virtualPC-12, on the inside and outside, sounds quite like the real one. It'sclear that the developers have leveraged on the FMOD sound model thatis supported by X-Plane 11 that allows for more realistic soundeffects. Apart from engine sounds, other sounds in the cockpit likethose of the avionics and alarms add the extra touch ofauthenticity. I'm quite pleased with how the PC-12 sounds. /images/reviews/carpc12x/t/car_pc12_8.jpgSo there you have it, dear reader. I've given you all the facts aboutthe Carenado PC-12 for X-Plane 11. It's now up to you to decide if youwant to buy it or not. Regardless, I shall offer my humble opinion. Ireally liked the Carenado PC-12. It's mostly visually satisfying andfunctionally realistic without any major flaws. Addition of themissing features to the Avidyne MFD, better night lighting and perhapsimprovements to the documentation could make this great add-on anoutstanding one. Even otherwise, if you're looking for a greatrendition of the PC-12/45 for X-Plane 11 you should consider investingin this add-on. You won't be disappointed. Hope this review will helpyou make your choice. Clear skies and happy landings to you! 8. Pilatus PC-12 For X-Plane 10Publisher: CarenadoReview Author: Nils LipsSuggested Price: $34.95/images/fsc/wbicons/pilot-shop-buy.pngIn the late eighties and earlynineties, Swiss aircraft manufacturer Pilatus developed asingle-engine propeller aircraft for mainly corporate use. It was tobe powered by a Pratt & Whitney PT-6A turboprop and capable ofefficiently flying a couple of passengers from airfields of variableproportion, at a reasonable speed and altitude. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_11x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_6x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_13x.jpgThis single-prop corporate aircraft became the first purpose builtcivil aircraft of the company: the highly successful PC-12 - now inuse with many private and corporate operators. Even some militaryoperators, like the USAF, make use of this versatile aircraft (U-28Awith USAF). Another well-known operator of PC-12's is Surf Air,operating a subscription based service across the United States. Pack FeaturesSpecific TypeI am not fully familiar with this aircraft type. I suspect, looking at the features of this model, this aircraft is the PC-12/45model, introduced in 1996, with a PT-6A-67B turboprop engine and MTOWof 4500 kg or 9920 lb. It definitely is not the later version withfive-bladed prop or NG with new avionics upgrade. Carenado may haveavoided dedicated modelling of a particular model or just decided notto mention the specific type of Pilatus PC-12 they recreated. DocumentationCarenado has included the following documentation: CreditsRecommended rendering settings (sparse)V(velocity) ReferencesMax cruise power and long range cruise performance tablesChecklist (Normal and Emergency)Simple EFIS GuideVersion History /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_14x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_15x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_16x.jpgLiveriesThe Carenado PC-12 comes with six different liveries. ThreeFAA-registered aircraft, two German and one Swiss registered PC-12,all of which are high-definition. The installed package takes up about 490 MB of disk space. Pre-FlightLike many of Carenado's creations, the aesthetics of the PC-12 aresimply stunning. Highly detailed textures and a comprehensive 3Dmodel give the aircraft a highly realistic appearance. The glossy,well-polished wooden cabin interior is especially pleasing. Stowabletables and the likes have all been nicely animated and the flight decksun visors are a nice feature - it may take a short time to work outhow to position them, but they work well once you do. The instrumentreflections look nice and and give a good impression of cathode raytube displays. Carenado's attention to eye candy is superb. InterfaceAs usual, Carenado has implemented some nice menu features. Theinterface enables you to change liveries on the go, open doors anddisplay static elements, such as an electric tow-bar and pitotcovers. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_17x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_19x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_1x.jpgThere is also a slider for adjusting the field of view; anotheruseful feature. The interface also allows you to change the soundvolume, which for me is extremely helpful as it means I don't have togo into Windows to change it. The mouse/cursor interaction is quite nice - it visualizes theoptions for interacting with a particular switch or button, which ishelpful. Just watch what you're pointing at when scrollingthough! Last but not least, the interface includes quick view buttons. Some Flight Deck & Systems BasicsThe flight deck is pretty basic, as is the case with many aircraftof a similar era and configuration (think TBM, Caravan, etc.). A quickread of the checklists allows pilots to familiarise themselves withthe basic operation of this flight deck. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_24x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_22x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_23x.jpgThis earlier (not-NG) version of the Pilatus comes with a basicEFIS (Electronic Flight Instrument System) including what seems to bethe Bendix/King EFS 40/50 with two CRT displays for the EADI EHSI.There are also two default XP10 Garmin GNS 530 GPS/NAV/COM units, aswell. These Carenado PC-12's also include a weather radar pod andavionics. Of course, details about the exact avionics lack, but Isuspect the WXR system is composed of components like the Bendix/King(Honeywell) ART 2000 radar, and maybe a BFGoodrich WX-1000 storm scopeprocessor (detects lightning using an antenna). The data is presented to the display units, like the Avidyne EX500Multi-Function Display on the pedestal. Other avionics featured aretwo transponders (Garmin GTX 327 Mode C), Bendix/King KR 87 ADF, andso on. In other words, the usual basic avionics. The large main display unit showing engine parameters is the EIS(Engine Instrument System). These permanently backlit LCD displaysprovide the flight crew with important engine monitoring data like ITT(Internal Turbine Temp), Torque, RPM, FF (Fuel Flow), Fuel Used, FuelQuantity, Endurance, Engine Oil Temp and Press, DC Generator Voltages,DC Generator Amperages and last but not least, date and time. Thedate and time are both maintained by internal EIS batteries. For allother functions, the EIS gets its power from either the BAT1 or GEN1Bus. The backlight is always powered by the BAT Bus. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_28x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_25x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_26x.jpgA fine feature is ECMS, or Engine Condition Monitoring System. This system uses the data acquired to enhance operation andmaintenance of the PT-6A, blurring the lines between modern airlinersand single-prop general aviation. A proper look at these displays (or overhead panels) of thePC-12's, shows a very obvious optional feature - the second electricalsystem. This is an option to have a second battery installed; one which hasits own monitoring display and data on the EIS. Luckily for us, theCarenado model includes this second battery. Almost every system in this aircraft is powered using DC power. ACis provided by a dual static inverter, which is two units in one; theNo.1 inverter gets its power from the BAT Bus, No.2 from Generator 1Bus. Alternating current is basically only used for avionics andsynchro references. Note: A BAT HOT indication in red does not mean the batteries arebeing drained, for the generators are inoperative. It means thisaircraft's NiCad batteries internal temperatures are exceeding normalvalues. Lead acid battery powered aircraft will not use thisfunction. However, for more information about the functionality (andissues), read further. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_27x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_20x.jpgInertial SeparatorOne might wonder what the 'inertial separator' switch on theoverhead panel does. In the sim, the functionality of this system iseither not present, or has a negligible effect. It is a very basic system, but one which is very useful to aircraftoperating in rain, ice, dust or on dusty airfields. It allows theseparticles to 'overshoot' the actual engine intake. This is becausethese particles are heavier than air, and with the inertial separatorvalve open, these particles basically fly straight out the back of theintake, while clean air enters the PT-6 with less risk of acceleratedwear and tear on the internal components. It will however, decreaseyour power output slightly. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_29x.jpg Taking It Out FlyingStarting the aircraft from cold and dark caused me to run intosome issues. I could definitely start the aircraft, but the systemfunctionality turned out to be somewhat problematic. First off, Inoticed the lights test switch did not activate all of the lights onthe flight deck. Also, without having a major load on the battery, Igot a BAT HOT annunciator pop up (it did not disappear for quite sometime). Other issues I had, were some of the lights not coming on ornot showing the halo effect, or the second generator not connecting tothe bus. The latter causes all load to be on generator 1, instead ofboth. The problem disappeared randomly during the test flight, yet,the lighting issues remained. I tried to mess with the systems quitea bit to see if I could find out if there was a way of avoiding theelectrical problems, but unfortunately, the only way to avoid theseissues was by starting the flight with everything running! So, youcan start the aircraft from cold and dark, but expect some unrealisticsystem behavior. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_3__2_x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_3x.jpgOnce in the air however, flying the PC-12 is a great experience, asthe aircraft 'feels' realistic. It is stable, gentle and relativelymanoeuvrable for an aircraft of this size and type. It is a luxury aircraft capable of operating on airfields that areoff-limits to other corporate aircraft, making it a perfect choice forflights into beautiful terrain and cosy strips; think remote locationsand small islands. The climb performance is great for a single engineprop. The autopilot is quite basic and works well, as far as I've testedit. Flying using GPS is made much more user friendly by having twoGPS units, giving you both more redundancy and an easy way of changingroute. The 3D sound effects are good! The Pilatus definitely sounds alivefrom every perspective. The 'phasey' floating crackling prop reallysounds sweet when the prop is in beta. In mid-air though I did noticethat the sound sometimes appeared to choke. Not a big issue, butremarkable. Overall Carenado does a great job recreating the realsound of the aircraft. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_5x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_6__2_x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_12x.jpgThe stick shaker and pusher do work, but it did not override my ownjoystick input. This is something I think is not really feasible tosimulate without making use of force feedback hardware. In real life, the stick pusher pushes the yoke down hard to avoid/recover from astall. But the pilot, although it usually requires great force, should be able to override this effect by either pulling hard (whichis useless without force feedback) or pressing an override button. The PC-12 has a button, yet I can still pull up like the pusher is noteven there. The shaker does sound great by the way! Another great feature of the Carenado PC-12 is a neat rain effecton the cockpit windshield. The WXR displayed on the MFD and EHSIworks, but looks more like an ADS-B feed, since it also looks behindthe aircraft. Computer PerformanceI use quite intense rendering settings, since I love flyingstick-n-rudder VFR flights with great views; yet, contrary to my ownpredictions, the performance drop wasn't that bad! Sure it took somepower to render the high definition Carenado textures, but I wasperfectly able to fly using Ortho scenery and detailed airfields. Sothe recommended rendering settings provided in the add-ondocumentation are rather conservative for a medium to high end PC. /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_7x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_8x.jpg /images/reviews/carepc12/t/car_pc12_9x.jpgMy System SpecsIntel Core i7-2600K @ 3.40 GHz (3.70 GHz)16 GB RAMGigabyte GTX 970 Windforce 4GBWindows 7 64 bitConclusionOverall, it's a beautiful aircraft, well replicated by Carenado. However, it will always leave that bitter taste of not being able tostart up from cold to dark without issues! For me, this is animportant (vital) part of the experience. Aircraft don't justmagically work, they have interesting internal components that allinteract to make the aircraft function like it does. Compared tolarge jets, the system complexity of this aircraft is child's play, soin my opinion it's a bummer to see it so buggy or lacking. If it had both the amazing visuals and working systems, this wouldbe an absolute gem. However, if you don't care about systems and justwant your aircraft to look and sound fantastic, then this PC-12 haspretty much everything you could desire. /images/notams/notams15/care0402.jpgNils Lips Purchase Carenado - PC12 for X-Plane 10
