The Short Stirling was initially conceived in 1936 in reply to advancesmade by the Americans and Russians in the area of quadri-motor bombertechnology. One of the first British bombers to see service inWorld War, it carried a payload similar to the Wellington and Whitley, butwas much faster and more maneuverable. It was the newest design of thesethree, sporting a very slender fuselage and fixed guns. It was indeed fasterand more agile but the defensive armament was inadequate and was laterupdated. Known as the "Flying Suitcase" due to its narrow fuselage andcramped crew positions, the Hampden was nearly as fast as the Blenheim butcarried 4 x the load twice as far. It was initially used in daylight raidsuntil combat losses dictated an improvement in defensive armament as well asa switch to night ops. The connection to thedownload server was very good so the entire download was quicklycompleted. The file downloaded is named VRT-1170 and is a 169 MB zipfile. Not really a huge file for an add-on aircraft. After the download was completed I started the installationprocess. This process is also very easy using the includedinstallation wizard - about 20 seconds and the aircraft wasinstalled. There were no updates to the version and there is nolicense key required for installing this aircraft. The installation wizard does not feature an 'auto-find' the correctinstallation folder, so this you have to do manually. ExternalI started out with a walk-around the aircraft like a pre-flightinspection before a flight. The model is huge; it is beautiful andvery authentic. I contacted Virtavia andthey verified that the model was indeed the old FSX model which hadreceived several upgrades and then converted to work on thePrepar3Dv4.5 platform - the upgrade consists of an extensive generaloverhaul, weapons systems upgraded with the ability ofshootable/droppable weapons which however is limited to the P3DProfessional Plus only, animated rotary launchers, the virtual cockpitis optimized for VR, cockpit night lights greatly improved and theaircraft's exterior (wings) are now visible from the virtual cockpit aswell. I find the model to be very accurate and a beautiful rendition ofthis awesome bird. The model features the distinctive huge tailsection as well as the variable sweeping wings and the mouse-lookingnose section. The aircraft appears like a brand new aircraft when lookingat the external textures, where I here would have enjoyed seeing a bitof wear and tear hear and there or some dirt or similar, but thatsaid, the textures are great and work perfectly with the model andshow the various metal plates that are put together to form the skinof aircraft. I could not see the actual rivets or similar in detail,but instead the aircraft textures feature a lot of various uniquemarkings like on the real aircraft. The aircraft model of course also features a set of variousanimations. There are animations such as the controls (ailerons,elevator and rudder), the gear and gear suspension, turning nosewheel, rotating wheels on both nose gear and main landing gear, themotion of sweeping the wings together with the flaps, spoilers,leading edge slats, stairs to the entry, bomb-bay doors on the threebelly chambers, toggle crew hide/unhide and the engine exhaustionetc. All animations are created very life-like and with a smoothmotion. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-16.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-45.jpgThere are also included some effects in the model like the variouslights - overall the lights are good quality with a soft and fairlyrealistic shine. More interesting is the afterburner flame effect -the flame effect is absolutely awesome with a very realistic mixtureof colors, and I very much like the difference or delay you see inlighting the afterburner. Here I mean, that when you activate theafterburner, the flame effect does not light up on all enginessimultaneously, but with a small difference or delay on each enginewhich just makes the experience much more realistic. I did miss a smoke effect when starting up the engines or whenflying - there were no smoke, not even when flying with fullafterburners - this I would have assumed there would be in reallife. There isno 2D cockpit for this add-on but instead Virtavia has created a verybeautiful and realistic virtual cockpit. Looking around the cockpit Iquickly got the feeling of being inside an elder military aircraft -lots of switches and old fashioned gauges and instruments which Ithink is just awesome. The cockpit is created with a very realisticdegree of wear and tear, and the cockpit and the impression that I gotlooking around, was certainly very authentic. The textures are good quality multi-layer textures and the degreeof wear and tear absolutely help in creating a very realisticenvironment since this aircraft is of a certain age - last productionwas back in 1988. Virtavia has had a really good focus on the virtualcockpit and especially on the detailing - everywhere I looked, I justkept on finding detail after detail and the complete environment isjust superb with an abundance of eye candy. Like on the external model,the internal animations are also good quality with a realistic smoothmotion. I did not see that many effects in the cockpit other than of coursethe upgraded cockpit night lighting which certainly is really good -the lights illuminate the cockpit perfectly and are an awesomeaddition to the experience of flying a night or dusk/dawn mission. Theoverall experience and atmosphere created in the virtual cockpit issuperb. However, one thing I did notice was that not all buttons andswitches were clickable also meaning that not all systems are fullyoperational. I know this is not a simulation add-on that is all-in,and the systems and switches etc. that are not fully operational areonly a few. Next to the engine sound set I found a complete environmental soundset covering sounds both inside and outside the aircraft. The externalsounds are the gear, the wings sweeping, the flaps, etc. and theinternal sounds are also a second version of the external sounds butalso the movement of levers, the clicking of buttons and so on. All sounds that are included in the add-on are high quality soundsthat are professionally created and which fit the model perfectly. Iespecially love the sound when applying the afterburner which providesa super deep roar that is just awesome and gave me chills whenblasting down the runway or making a fast descent into low levelmission targeting. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-25.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-26.jpgI also checked for various chimes but here I did not encounter thatmany. I got a stall warning which was quite good, but I did miss anoverspeed warning, a ground-pull-up warning and the coming in forlanding chimes with 50, 40, 30 call-outs. Weather these chimes orwarnings are in the real aircraft I of course cannot confirm, but Iwould assume they are. I tested the sound set in both ordinary stereo using a standardheadset, then also in a 2.1 configuration using two front speakersconnected to an active subwoofer and finally also in a complete 7.1surround sound configuration. The sound was superb in all tests. Flight Dynamics And CharacteristicsNow the fun part of the test was surely the flight tests. Here Istarted out with a taxi to the runway to see how the aircraft behavedand handled. I discovered that the aircraft is quite easy to handle,you have a really good overview of the taxiways ahead and to bothsides, you sit up rather high which also provides a better overviewand you just have to remember that this aircraft is enormous likea Boeing B747, so you need to take this into consideration whenturning the aircraft. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-27.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-28.jpgTo start rolling you do need to apply quite a lot of power whichmakes good sense since this aircraft is very heavy, but to keep theaircraft rolling can be performed almost on an idle setting. The wheelbrakes are very efficient and will stop the aircraft quickly. Turningthe aircraft using the nose wheel is also very easy and the aircraftwill turn in a very short diameter compared to the size of theaircraft. After the taxi I finally reached the runway and prepared fortakeoff. I lined up on the centerline and checked for traffic before Iapplied full throttle and full afterburner. I heard the engines spoolup and thereafter the afterburners kicking in with an awesome deeprumble - the engines are very powerful but the aircraft is still hugeand heavy so the acceleration did not feel that powerful ... still Igot a superb experience mostly due to the awesome sound. Blasting down the runway reaching V1, V2 and Rotate was a reallygood experience, then pulling back on the stick and raising the noselifted the aircraft softly off the runway and into a steady climb. Theweather was fair and I really didn't feel any turbulence. The aircraftwas very steady during the entire takeoff and climb and I would assumethat this is fairly in accordance to real life, since the aircraft isa very heavy aircraft, which I would think would need severeturbulence to have an unpleasant impact. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-29.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-30.jpgFlying the B1 is very easy, the controls are smooth and theresponses are quick and the aircraft just has so much surplus powerthat you don't really have to worry about raising the nose toomuch. During my flight test I tested both high altitude flights aswell as low and also very low level high speed flights. Even thoughflying at a very low level with full throttle, the aircraft was stillvery easy to control - of course when flying over a terrain that isnot flat you do need to plan ahead all the time. I did a couple ofcanyon runs and the B1 could be handled much like a fighter jethowever with a bit slower reaction time and with a longer turningradius. I also tested several of the real specs to see how well the flightdynamics of the aircraft were created and here there is room forimprovements I'd say. E.g. I did a full throttle with afterburner at150' MSL where I reached a bit more than 750 knots equal to about Mach1.12 - according to the specs I should not be able to reach more thanabout 608 knot equal to Mach 0.92 so here there is a smalldifference. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-31.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-32.jpgI did the same test at an altitude of 40,000' where the specsindicated that I should be able to reach Mach 1.25 - my test took meto Mach 1.20 which I would say is very close. Next I tested the impact on the nose position towards the horizonwhen flying with the flaps up and then lowering the flaps. I foundthat when lowering the flaps the nose also dropped and when raisingthe flaps the nose also went upward which I was very pleased tosee. When looking at the wings, the flaps and the spoilers I wouldassume that this aircraft would be able to generate quite a lot ofdrag and even more when lowering the landing gear, so this I of coursealso tested. The result was a minimal drag where the impact wasvisible on the indicated airspeed, but not nearly as greatly as I hadassumed. I think this is not that accurate according to real life. Another detail that I had to check was the stall speed of theaircraft with gear and flaps up and with the wings swept all the wayin. The stall occurred at around 200 knots at an altitude of 2,500' -the same test I did with the wings swept out, with full flaps and thelanding gear down, now the stall occurred at around 140 knots instead,so this was really nice to see that the flight dynamics had thisdifference which makes that part realistic. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-33.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-34.jpgThe last spec that I wanted to test was the service ceiling - Iapplied full throttle and started a steady climb leveling out a littlebit at the time the higher I came. The specs indicate that I should beable to climb the aircraft to 60,000' but I unfortunately came nowherenear that. The absolute max altitude that I reached was 48,500' andthat was just a peak altitude and not a steady cruise. I think thedifference in my tests of the service ceiling and the specs is quitemuch. I did this test several times with different climb sequences butI could not get any higher than the 48,500'. Landing the aircraft can be a bit tricky - you have a great forwardview, but the aircraft is huge and heavy and you need to set it downon the runway softly. Of course the huge flaps helps you out but Iwould say that landing this aircraft was more demanding thane.g. landing the Boeing 747 and this just in fair weather. The P3Dv4.5 version also features a next level of realism with thedetailed weapon systems and weapon management. You are now able toactually fire or drop armaments which just increases the experiencegreatly especially when flying e.g. a low level bombing mission. To completethe installation was also very easy - there are no 'auto-find' thecorrect installation folder so you have to select the directory andfolder manually. This however is of course no problem, you can eitherselect the P3D folder or you can install the add-on outside the mainP3D folder as often recommended. If you want to install within the P3Dfolder, please do select the path all the way to the airplane's folder- otherwise the aircraft will be placed in the root of the P3Dfolder. I did my installation with the pathP3D/SimObjects/Airplanes/. The installation process was quick - only about 30 seconds orso. There were no version updates ready to be installed and there isno registration key needed. Going to the virtual hangar I found the C-17A perfectly placedunder Virtavia. There is one model included and several differentliveries, all placed perfectly one after another. ExternalI started my test with an external walk-around e.g. like apre-flight inspection to get the full view of the model. My firstthought was that this model resembled the old FSX model which I hadpreviously tested, and it also turned out that this was true. Themodel is the original FSX model, which has received an extensiveupdate to work in P3D v4.5. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-25.jpgWalking around the aircraft I felt very impressed - the aircraft isbeautifully created with a keen focus on details, size and of coursealso on the realism. The aircraft model resembles the real aircraftnicely in all dimensions and has all the very distinctive features such asthe high wing configuration with the negative V-shape, the enormousT-tail and the fat-body design. The textures used are high quality multi-layer 2048-pixeltextures. The texture detailing features everything from the smallrivets to various markings and creates a very realisticappearance of the aircraft model. I did not see much wear and tear ordirt on the external model which could have been nice, since thisaircraft is not brand new any more. You can open the main exit with thestandard 'Shift+E' command and the right side door activates using the'Shift+E+4' command. The paratrooper door is 'Shift+E+3' and soon. Please do notice that using the loading ramp can only be activatedwhen on ground - here I mean opening the ramp fully. Additionally youcan also toggle the pilots by clicking the 'Ctrl+W' keys. I also set my focus on the lights and the effect of the variouslights. The effect is very realistic. For example, the wingtip lightsare soft but still with a bright and clear flash of course bestvisible during dusk, night and dawn operations. The landing lights arealso soft with a very realistic shine. The landing lights illuminatethe runway perfectly providing a realistic and powerful experiencecoming in on final. The model does unfortunately not featurea wing-flex effect which I would have hoped for. InternalJumping into the aircraft I found both a 2D cockpit as well as avirtual cockpit. The 2D cockpit is very well made and featuresmultiple clickable switches, very beautiful gauges and pop-up panelswhich can be activated using the Shift+number keys or using the smallsmart icons placed in the captain's section of the MiP. One of thepanels feature a complete checklist which is just awesome - that makesthe cockpit and the use of the cockpit more interesting. The 2Dcockpit looks like a brand new cockpit featuring no or minimum wearand tear, which I think would have added to the overall impression andexperience of the 2D cockpit if it was there. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-02.jpgThe virtual cockpit is also very well created with a beautiful 3Dvisualization of the entire cockpit. The cockpit environment is veryrealistic and the atmosphere created in really good. Virtavia hasindeed had a great focus on details and realism. Unfortunately thereare several systems and buttons which are not animated - hereespecially in the lower / back section of the pedestal. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-19.jpgThe textures used in the cockpit are in general high qualitymulti-layer textures that also show a great amount of wear and tear,which absolutely helps to create a realistic environment. The texturesfor the various instruments, gauges, levers and switches, etc. areawesome but taking a look at the panels which does not feature buttonsor switches, e.g. the side panels or panels in between sections,I find these textures to be of a lower quality. Maybe this is to keepthe aircraft frame rate friendly - I would have liked the same qualityall over the cockpit. There are lots of animations included in the virtual cockpit -the control stick, the rudder, the various levers and of courseall the buttons and switches. Thelight is soft and did not irritate my eyes but still the light wasable to illuminate the cockpit perfectly. Another specific part that I noticed when sitting in the virtualcockpit, was that I could now see the wings and engines. In the oldFSX version (as I remember it) the wings were not visible from thecockpit. They are now and that is absolutely superb! SoundThere are several sound sets included in this add-on coveringvarious aspects of the environment both for the internal (cockpitenvironment) as well as for the external part of the aircraft. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-15.jpgFirst we have the primary sound set that covers the engine soundsat various rpms as well as the start-up and the shutdown and of coursealso the reverse thrusters. Secondly we have a sound set covering allthe environmental sounds in the cockpit such as the clicking of buttons,flipping of switches and movement of levers, etc. There is also a soundset covering the movement of the flaps and the gear as well asthe ramp, etc. I would have expected a sound set for the various chimes asbank-angle warning, overspeed warning or when coming in on finalwith the countdown of 50, 40, 30, etc. however I did not hear manychimes other than the overspeed warning which sounded a lot like thedefault warning and of course also the stall speed warning. If this istrue to real life in regards to the 'missing chimes' I am unsure but Iwould assume there would be more chime in the real Globemaster. The sound quality is high quality TSS sound and the sound is veryrealistic and certainly adds to the overall impression and theexperience of the aircraft. The sound is a very important part ofcreating an authentic and realistic environment and the included soundsets are all of a very good quality. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-17.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-14.jpgI tested the sounds in first ordinary stereo, then 2.1 stereo usingfront speakers and an active sub and finally using a complete 7.1surround sound setup. The sound performed perfectly in all tests bothinternally and externally. Flight Dynamics And CharacteristicsNow to the fun part - the actual flight tests. I started outtesting the general handling of the aircraft when taxiing orparking the aircraft and what I found was an aircraft that handleseasily. The view from the cockpit is excellent and provides the pilotwith a great overview of the surrounding area. The nose wheel is veryefficient and makes the aircraft turn within a very small radius. The thrust is firm, steady and accurate and the aircraft does notneed much thrust before it starts to move. If you change the thrust ithandles much like any other jet aircraft where you have a delay whenthe engine spools up/down meaning that you have to plan ahead. Alsoif taxiing and you want to come to a full stop, you need to takeinto account the delay but also the weight of the aircraft which makethe 'idle run distance' fairly long. In regards to the throttles I also tested the reverse thrusters onground, and yes, the aircraft can taxi backwards when full reversethrusters are applied. This is very well in accordance to real lifeand an awesome feature of this aircraft. It really comes in handy ifyou are to perform a takeoff from a very short runway - then you cantaxi out on the runway and then back-up the aircraft all the way andhereby make use of the entire runway. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-21.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-22.jpgThe wheel brakes are very efficient and combining them with thereverse thrusters and the spoilers, the landing distance can be rathershort (and ultra short with a strong headwind). Performing the takeoff was a nice experience. Even though theaircraft features an enormous tail, the aircraft is very steadyblasting down the runway even with gusty winds. When the aircraftlifts off the ground not much actually changes since the aircraft is aheavy aircraft and is very steady also in stormy weatherconditions. The takeoff distance is short due to both some verypowerful engines and some huge flaps. The powerful engines provide asuperb climb-rate which is also noticeable in the add-on. Handling the aircraft in the air is easy and very smooth - theailerons are rather sensitive and the rudder and elevator is much likea B747. When you place the aircraft in a 30 degree turn it does notrequire much effort to keep the bank angle, hereby making the turnvery steady and creating a good and relaxed flight experience. I did a few specific tests of the flight dynamics to test if theflight dynamics were in according to the specs of the real lifeaircraft. These tests were of the service ceiling and the max IASmarked in the instruments versus the overspeed warning and what Ifound was that the flight dynamics are very well in accordance to thespecs. E.g. the service ceiling is specified to be 45,000' and in mytest I reached an altitude of 48,500' however, a steady cruise couldnot be maintained over 46,000' making the performance very realisticaccording to the specs. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-23.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-24.jpgFlying the aircraft using the auto pilot is a good experience - itresembles flying a Boeing 737 using the Collins autopilot and theautopilot is very intuitive, simple and easy to get familiar with forthe most common actions. I did a few tests in regards to stall and stall speeds and foundthat the aircraft handles very nicely entering a stall with levelwings. Actually I noticed that if I had a 10 degree nose-up with fullflaps and the throttle at idle it was like the aircraft didn't reallywant to stall - I could see on the altimeter that the altitude starteda descent but no stall warning however, pitching up to 13 degreesnose-up I got a stall warning but the aircraft was still easy tocontrol. The stall speed also changes according to the flaps positionmeaning that the stall steed for the aircraft with flaps and gear upwas about 140 knots in my setup at about 7,000'. Lowering the gearresulted in a new stall speed of about 142 knots and lowering theflaps to maximum as well changed the stall speed to be about 100knots. I love the fact that you see a difference and this just makesthe simulation more realistic in my opinion. When you lower the flaps in real life you also see a result on thenose position towards the horizon so this was of course also somethingthat I had to test. The result was that by lowering the flaps the nosealso went downward and vise versa. If you need to make a rapid descent then this is also possibleespecially when the aircraft is blessed with such huge or moreaccurately 'enormous' spoilers. Flaring the C17 was quite an experience because I feltthat the aircraft would just keep on flying like it was surfing on anair-bobble - this even though the throttle was idle and the flaps weremax down. I would assume that this also is much like real life due tothe huge wing area and the enormous flaps but this I of course cannotconfirm since I have never flown this aircraft in real life. ConclusionTo wrap up my experience of the Boeing C17A Globemaster III createdby Virtavia, then I like this aircraft very much. I think Virtavia hascreated a beautiful rendition of this heavy lifter which is not acommon aircraft for P3Dv4. The model is a high quality model featuring multi-layer highquality textures, a very accurate model, an abundance of details andmarkings and a very realistic and authentic appearance. The add-onfeatures a good quality 2D cockpit as well as a very beautiful andauthentic virtual cockpit where Virtavia has been able to create avery realistic atmosphere providing the simmer with a sensationalexperience. Also the sounds included are top quality and indeed very realisticwhich adds to the exceptional experience of this aircraft. The model is the original FSX model with a series of updates and itworks perfectly in P3Dv4.5+ - if you liked the FSX version you willcertainly also like this version. It is very easy to see that Virtaviahas kept a keen focus on detailing, quality, accuracy and on creatingthe aircraft as realistic and authentic as possible. In my opinionVirtavia has reached their goal with great success. The aircraft does not take up much space on your hard drive and isindeed very frame rate friendly - I had absolutely no experiences ofminimum frames. I rate the C17A with a solid 4/5-stars rating - and I thankVirtavia for creating this awesome aircraft for the P3D platform aswell. The connection to thedownload server was very good so the entire download was quicklycompleted. The file downloaded is named VRT-1170 and is a 169 MB zipfile. Not really a huge file for an add-on aircraft. After the download was completed I started the installationprocess. This process is also very easy using the includedinstallation wizard - about 20 seconds and the aircraft wasinstalled. There were no updates to the version and there is nolicense key required for installing this aircraft. The installation wizard does not feature an 'auto-find' the correctinstallation folder, so this you have to do manually. I contacted Virtavia andthey verified that the model was indeed the old FSX model which hadreceived several upgrades and then converted to work on thePrepar3Dv4.5 platform - the upgrade consists of an extensive generaloverhaul, weapons systems upgraded with the ability ofshootable/droppable weapons which however is limited to the P3DProfessional Plus only, animated rotary launchers, the virtual cockpitis optimized for VR, cockpit night lights greatly improved and theaircraft's exterior (wings) are now visible from the virtual cockpit aswell. I find the model to be very accurate and a beautiful rendition ofthis awesome bird. The model features the distinctive huge tailsection as well as the variable sweeping wings and the mouse-lookingnose section. The aircraft appears like a brand new aircraft when lookingat the external textures, where I here would have enjoyed seeing a bitof wear and tear hear and there or some dirt or similar, but thatsaid, the textures are great and work perfectly with the model andshow the various metal plates that are put together to form the skinof aircraft. I could not see the actual rivets or similar in detail,but instead the aircraft textures feature a lot of various uniquemarkings like on the real aircraft. The aircraft model of course also features a set of variousanimations. Here I mean, that when you activate theafterburner, the flame effect does not light up on all enginessimultaneously, but with a small difference or delay on each enginewhich just makes the experience much more realistic. I did miss a smoke effect when starting up the engines or whenflying - there were no smoke, not even when flying with fullafterburners - this I would have assumed there would be in reallife. There isno 2D cockpit for this add-on but instead Virtavia has created a verybeautiful and realistic virtual cockpit. Looking around the cockpit Iquickly got the feeling of being inside an elder military aircraft -lots of switches and old fashioned gauges and instruments which Ithink is just awesome. The cockpit is created with a very realisticdegree of wear and tear, and the cockpit and the impression that I gotlooking around, was certainly very authentic. The textures are good quality multi-layer textures and the degreeof wear and tear absolutely help in creating a very realisticenvironment since this aircraft is of a certain age - last productionwas back in 1988. Virtavia has had a really good focus on the virtualcockpit and especially on the detailing - everywhere I looked, I justkept on finding detail after detail and the complete environment isjust superb with an abundance of eye candy. I did not see that many effects in the cockpit other than of coursethe upgraded cockpit night lighting which certainly is really good -the lights illuminate the cockpit perfectly and are an awesomeaddition to the experience of flying a night or dusk/dawn mission. Theoverall experience and atmosphere created in the virtual cockpit issuperb. However, one thing I did notice was that not all buttons andswitches were clickable also meaning that not all systems are fullyoperational. I know this is not a simulation add-on that is all-in,and the systems and switches etc. that are not fully operational areonly a few. Next to the engine sound set I found a complete environmental soundset covering sounds both inside and outside the aircraft. The externalsounds are the gear, the wings sweeping, the flaps, etc. and theinternal sounds are also a second version of the external sounds butalso the movement of levers, the clicking of buttons and so on. All sounds that are included in the add-on are high quality soundsthat are professionally created and which fit the model perfectly. I got a stall warning which was quite good, but I did miss anoverspeed warning, a ground-pull-up warning and the coming in forlanding chimes with 50, 40, 30 call-outs. Weather these chimes orwarnings are in the real aircraft I of course cannot confirm, but Iwould assume they are. I tested the sound set in both ordinary stereo using a standardheadset, then also in a 2.1 configuration using two front speakersconnected to an active subwoofer and finally also in a complete 7.1surround sound configuration. The sound was superb in all tests. Flight Dynamics And CharacteristicsNow the fun part of the test was surely the flight tests. Here Istarted out with a taxi to the runway to see how the aircraft behavedand handled. I discovered that the aircraft is quite easy to handle,you have a really good overview of the taxiways ahead and to bothsides, you sit up rather high which also provides a better overviewand you just have to remember that this aircraft is enormous likea Boeing B747, so you need to take this into consideration whenturning the aircraft. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-27.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-28.jpgTo start rolling you do need to apply quite a lot of power whichmakes good sense since this aircraft is very heavy, but to keep theaircraft rolling can be performed almost on an idle setting. The wheelbrakes are very efficient and will stop the aircraft quickly. Turningthe aircraft using the nose wheel is also very easy and the aircraftwill turn in a very short diameter compared to the size of theaircraft. After the taxi I finally reached the runway and prepared fortakeoff. I lined up on the centerline and checked for traffic before Iapplied full throttle and full afterburner. I heard the engines spoolup and thereafter the afterburners kicking in with an awesome deeprumble - the engines are very powerful but the aircraft is still hugeand heavy so the acceleration did not feel that powerful ... still Igot a superb experience mostly due to the awesome sound. Blasting down the runway reaching V1, V2 and Rotate was a reallygood experience, then pulling back on the stick and raising the noselifted the aircraft softly off the runway and into a steady climb. Theweather was fair and I really didn't feel any turbulence. The aircraftwas very steady during the entire takeoff and climb and I would assumethat this is fairly in accordance to real life, since the aircraft isa very heavy aircraft, which I would think would need severeturbulence to have an unpleasant impact. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-29.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-30.jpgFlying the B1 is very easy, the controls are smooth and theresponses are quick and the aircraft just has so much surplus powerthat you don't really have to worry about raising the nose toomuch. During my flight test I tested both high altitude flights aswell as low and also very low level high speed flights. Even thoughflying at a very low level with full throttle, the aircraft was stillvery easy to control - of course when flying over a terrain that isnot flat you do need to plan ahead all the time. I did a couple ofcanyon runs and the B1 could be handled much like a fighter jethowever with a bit slower reaction time and with a longer turningradius. I also tested several of the real specs to see how well the flightdynamics of the aircraft were created and here there is room forimprovements I'd say. E.g. I did a full throttle with afterburner at150' MSL where I reached a bit more than 750 knots equal to about Mach1.12 - according to the specs I should not be able to reach more thanabout 608 knot equal to Mach 0.92 so here there is a smalldifference. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-31.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-32.jpgI did the same test at an altitude of 40,000' where the specsindicated that I should be able to reach Mach 1.25 - my test took meto Mach 1.20 which I would say is very close. Next I tested the impact on the nose position towards the horizonwhen flying with the flaps up and then lowering the flaps. I foundthat when lowering the flaps the nose also dropped and when raisingthe flaps the nose also went upward which I was very pleased tosee. When looking at the wings, the flaps and the spoilers I wouldassume that this aircraft would be able to generate quite a lot ofdrag and even more when lowering the landing gear, so this I of coursealso tested. The result was a minimal drag where the impact wasvisible on the indicated airspeed, but not nearly as greatly as I hadassumed. I think this is not that accurate according to real life. Another detail that I had to check was the stall speed of theaircraft with gear and flaps up and with the wings swept all the wayin. The stall occurred at around 200 knots at an altitude of 2,500' -the same test I did with the wings swept out, with full flaps and thelanding gear down, now the stall occurred at around 140 knots instead,so this was really nice to see that the flight dynamics had thisdifference which makes that part realistic. /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-33.jpg /images/reviews/virtrb1b/t/virtavia-b1b-lancer-34.jpgThe last spec that I wanted to test was the service ceiling - Iapplied full throttle and started a steady climb leveling out a littlebit at the time the higher I came. The specs indicate that I should beable to climb the aircraft to 60,000' but I unfortunately came nowherenear that. The absolute max altitude that I reached was 48,500' andthat was just a peak altitude and not a steady cruise. I think thedifference in my tests of the service ceiling and the specs is quitemuch. I did this test several times with different climb sequences butI could not get any higher than the 48,500'. Landing the aircraft can be a bit tricky - you have a great forwardview, but the aircraft is huge and heavy and you need to set it downon the runway softly. Of course the huge flaps helps you out but Iwould say that landing this aircraft was more demanding thane.g. landing the Boeing 747 and this just in fair weather. The P3Dv4.5 version also features a next level of realism with thedetailed weapon systems and weapon management. You are now able toactually fire or drop armaments which just increases the experiencegreatly especially when flying e.g. a low level bombing mission. Going to the virtual hangar I found the C-17A perfectly placedunder Virtavia. There is one model included and several differentliveries, all placed perfectly one after another. ExternalI started my test with an external walk-around e.g. like apre-flight inspection to get the full view of the model. My firstthought was that this model resembled the old FSX model which I hadpreviously tested, and it also turned out that this was true. The aircraft model resembles the real aircraftnicely in all dimensions and has all the very distinctive features such asthe high wing configuration with the negative V-shape, the enormousT-tail and the fat-body design. The textures used are high quality multi-layer 2048-pixeltextures. The texture detailing features everything from the smallrivets to various markings and creates a very realisticappearance of the aircraft model. I did not see much wear and tear ordirt on the external model which could have been nice, since thisaircraft is not brand new any more. You can open the main exit with thestandard 'Shift+E' command and the right side door activates using the'Shift+E+4' command. The paratrooper door is 'Shift+E+3' and soon. Please do notice that using the loading ramp can only be activatedwhen on ground - here I mean opening the ramp fully. Additionally youcan also toggle the pilots by clicking the 'Ctrl+W' keys. I also set my focus on the lights and the effect of the variouslights. The effect is very realistic. For example, the wingtip lightsare soft but still with a bright and clear flash of course bestvisible during dusk, night and dawn operations. The landing lights arealso soft with a very realistic shine. The landing lights illuminatethe runway perfectly providing a realistic and powerful experiencecoming in on final. The model does unfortunately not featurea wing-flex effect which I would have hoped for. InternalJumping into the aircraft I found both a 2D cockpit as well as avirtual cockpit. The 2D cockpit is very well made and featuresmultiple clickable switches, very beautiful gauges and pop-up panelswhich can be activated using the Shift+number keys or using the smallsmart icons placed in the captain's section of the MiP. One of thepanels feature a complete checklist which is just awesome - that makesthe cockpit and the use of the cockpit more interesting. The cockpit environment is veryrealistic and the atmosphere created in really good. Virtavia hasindeed had a great focus on details and realism. The texturesfor the various instruments, gauges, levers and switches, etc. areawesome but taking a look at the panels which does not feature buttonsor switches, e.g. the side panels or panels in between sections,I find these textures to be of a lower quality. Maybe this is to keepthe aircraft frame rate friendly - I would have liked the same qualityall over the cockpit. There are lots of animations included in the virtual cockpit -the control stick, the rudder, the various levers and of courseall the buttons and switches. Another specific part that I noticed when sitting in the virtualcockpit, was that I could now see the wings and engines. In the oldFSX version (as I remember it) the wings were not visible from thecockpit. They are now and that is absolutely superb! SoundThere are several sound sets included in this add-on coveringvarious aspects of the environment both for the internal (cockpitenvironment) as well as for the external part of the aircraft. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-15.jpgFirst we have the primary sound set that covers the engine soundsat various rpms as well as the start-up and the shutdown and of coursealso the reverse thrusters. Secondly we have a sound set covering allthe environmental sounds in the cockpit such as the clicking of buttons,flipping of switches and movement of levers, etc. There is also a soundset covering the movement of the flaps and the gear as well asthe ramp, etc. I would have expected a sound set for the various chimes asbank-angle warning, overspeed warning or when coming in on finalwith the countdown of 50, 40, 30, etc. however I did not hear manychimes other than the overspeed warning which sounded a lot like thedefault warning and of course also the stall speed warning. If this istrue to real life in regards to the 'missing chimes' I am unsure but Iwould assume there would be more chime in the real Globemaster. The sound quality is high quality TSS sound and the sound is veryrealistic and certainly adds to the overall impression and theexperience of the aircraft. The sound performed perfectly in all tests bothinternally and externally. Flight Dynamics And CharacteristicsNow to the fun part - the actual flight tests. I started outtesting the general handling of the aircraft when taxiing orparking the aircraft and what I found was an aircraft that handleseasily. The view from the cockpit is excellent and provides the pilotwith a great overview of the surrounding area. The nose wheel is veryefficient and makes the aircraft turn within a very small radius. The thrust is firm, steady and accurate and the aircraft does notneed much thrust before it starts to move. If you change the thrust ithandles much like any other jet aircraft where you have a delay whenthe engine spools up/down meaning that you have to plan ahead. Alsoif taxiing and you want to come to a full stop, you need to takeinto account the delay but also the weight of the aircraft which makethe 'idle run distance' fairly long. In regards to the throttles I also tested the reverse thrusters onground, and yes, the aircraft can taxi backwards when full reversethrusters are applied. This is very well in accordance to real lifeand an awesome feature of this aircraft. It really comes in handy ifyou are to perform a takeoff from a very short runway - then you cantaxi out on the runway and then back-up the aircraft all the way andhereby make use of the entire runway. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-21.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-22.jpgThe wheel brakes are very efficient and combining them with thereverse thrusters and the spoilers, the landing distance can be rathershort (and ultra short with a strong headwind). Performing the takeoff was a nice experience. Even though theaircraft features an enormous tail, the aircraft is very steadyblasting down the runway even with gusty winds. When the aircraftlifts off the ground not much actually changes since the aircraft is aheavy aircraft and is very steady also in stormy weatherconditions. The takeoff distance is short due to both some verypowerful engines and some huge flaps. The powerful engines provide asuperb climb-rate which is also noticeable in the add-on. Handling the aircraft in the air is easy and very smooth - theailerons are rather sensitive and the rudder and elevator is much likea B747. When you place the aircraft in a 30 degree turn it does notrequire much effort to keep the bank angle, hereby making the turnvery steady and creating a good and relaxed flight experience. I did a few specific tests of the flight dynamics to test if theflight dynamics were in according to the specs of the real lifeaircraft. These tests were of the service ceiling and the max IASmarked in the instruments versus the overspeed warning and what Ifound was that the flight dynamics are very well in accordance to thespecs. E.g. the service ceiling is specified to be 45,000' and in mytest I reached an altitude of 48,500' however, a steady cruise couldnot be maintained over 46,000' making the performance very realisticaccording to the specs. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-23.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-24.jpgFlying the aircraft using the auto pilot is a good experience - itresembles flying a Boeing 737 using the Collins autopilot and theautopilot is very intuitive, simple and easy to get familiar with forthe most common actions. I did a few tests in regards to stall and stall speeds and foundthat the aircraft handles very nicely entering a stall with levelwings. Actually I noticed that if I had a 10 degree nose-up with fullflaps and the throttle at idle it was like the aircraft didn't reallywant to stall - I could see on the altimeter that the altitude starteda descent but no stall warning however, pitching up to 13 degreesnose-up I got a stall warning but the aircraft was still easy tocontrol. The stall speed also changes according to the flaps positionmeaning that the stall steed for the aircraft with flaps and gear upwas about 140 knots in my setup at about 7,000'. Lowering the gearresulted in a new stall speed of about 142 knots and lowering theflaps to maximum as well changed the stall speed to be about 100knots. I love the fact that you see a difference and this just makesthe simulation more realistic in my opinion. When you lower the flaps in real life you also see a result on thenose position towards the horizon so this was of course also somethingthat I had to test. The result was that by lowering the flaps the nosealso went downward and vise versa. If you need to make a rapid descent then this is also possibleespecially when the aircraft is blessed with such huge or moreaccurately 'enormous' spoilers. Applying the spoilers absolutely showedan impact on the IAS and also on the descent rate which I think isvery well in accordance to real life. /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-11.jpg /images/reviews/c17globe/t/virtavia-c17a-globemaster-13.jpgThe last test I did was the flaring of the aircraft when coming infor landing. Flaring the C17 was quite an experience because I feltthat the aircraft would just keep on flying like it was surfing on anair-bobble - this even though the throttle was idle and the flaps weremax down. I would assume that this also is much like real life due tothe huge wing area and the enormous flaps but this I of course cannotconfirm since I have never flown this aircraft in real life. ConclusionTo wrap up my experience of the Boeing C17A Globemaster III createdby Virtavia, then I like this aircraft very much. I think Virtavia hascreated a beautiful rendition of this heavy lifter which is not acommon aircraft for P3Dv4. The model is a high quality model featuring multi-layer highquality textures, a very accurate model, an abundance of details andmarkings and a very realistic and authentic appearance. The add-onfeatures a good quality 2D cockpit as well as a very beautiful andauthentic virtual cockpit where Virtavia has been able to create avery realistic atmosphere providing the simmer with a sensationalexperience. Also the sounds included are top quality and indeed very realisticwhich adds to the exceptional experience of this aircraft. The model is the original FSX model with a series of updates and itworks perfectly in P3Dv4.5+ - if you liked the FSX version you willcertainly also like this version. It is very easy to see that Virtaviahas kept a keen focus on detailing, quality, accuracy and on creatingthe aircraft as realistic and authentic as possible. In my opinionVirtavia has reached their goal with great success. The aircraft does not take up much space on your hard drive and isindeed very frame rate friendly - I had absolutely no experiences ofminimum frames. I rate the C17A with a solid 4/5-stars rating - and I thankVirtavia for creating this awesome aircraft for the P3D platform aswell.
