Review: Orbx Caernarfon Airport for X-Plane 11By Paul Mort /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-01.jpgHello and welcome to a review of Caernarfon Airport for X-Plane 11by Orbx. During the testing of this scenery, all aspects of the airport andsurrounding area were scrutinised for texture quality, buildingplacement accuracy, value for money and overall comparison to theairport's real life location. Having had the pleasure of visiting theairport some years ago during a visit to Wales, it made reviewingCaernarfon Airport a lot more enjoyable, as you will see in thisreview. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-02.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-03.jpgLocationServing as the base for the Welsh Search and Rescue and AirAmbulance, Caernarfon Airport also has a couple of flying schools inoperation. It is situated in the heart of Snowdonia close to theIsland of Anglesey and the Menai Straight. The surrounding areas ofCaernarfon Airport offer stunning views which, in the X-Plane world, are greatly enhanced by the use of Orbx True Earth Central. This is anadditional payware product used as a base layer for the airport, butone I feel is a must have purchase. The airport originally opened in 1941 as RAF Llandwrog. The basewas mainly used in the training of gunners, radio operators andnavigators and later was the home for the RAF Mountain Rescue. Duringthe 2000s, the airport underwent significant re-development andexpansion. Situated on the site is a large cafe, a maintenance andstorage hangar, plus a visitor centre and shop, which are part of theairport's Aviation Museum. Orbx are universally credited as being oneof the great scenery makers of our time, so as per usual I performed avirtual walk around of the scenery to check out all the details andsee how it compared to the real airport I visited. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-04.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-05.jpgWalk AroundStanding with my back to the Irish Sea, I could tell that theairport was a mix of both old and modern buildings. This is true ofthe real airport and reflects the changes made during the last fewdecades. Not content with simply plastering the area with flat orthoscenery, Orbx have very carefully placed 3D objects over theirrespective areas. One good example of this is the beautiful Welshstone cottage just off the approach road. This simply oozes Welshcharacter, and fits the scenery perfectly. The vegetation was just howI remembered it; sparse with a few bushes but no trees present. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-06.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-07.jpgAnother nice touch, and one that could have so easily been ignoredor missed, was that the signs for the airport were in both Welsh andEnglish. Situated around the airport, were a handful of staticaircraft, and these were of good texture quality and modelling (forstatic models), and appropriate for the scenery. On the way in to the car park you'll see the small aviation museumrecreated just as I remember it. Inside you'll find a gift shop and anextensive display of aircraft and helicopters in various stages ofrenovation. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the museum inreal life, there's also a lot of historical details regarding theexhibits on show which are truly fascinating. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-08.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-09.jpgA good example of some of the texturing detail was the main airporttower. The feeling of corrugated tin and weathering was nicelyrecreated, as was the inclusion of both Welsh and Englishlanguages. As expected from Orbx, the quality of the vehicles in thepublic car park could not be faulted. It's always nice to see static3D models, rather than simply an ortho representation of a car park. The cafeteria building at the airport also impressed megreatly. Not due just to its accuracy, but because it also gave theimpression of depth inside (clever texturing work). Lastly, large parts of the concrete around the airport wereslightly weathered and faded. This conveyed a great feeling of thearea being used and also weathered by time. Getting this right is noeasy feat, and is something I would like to see more of in regards toX-Plane sceneries. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-10.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-11.jpgWhat Orbx Said"Created by True Earth developer Tony Wroblewski, the entireairfield has been modelled in superb detail from extensive real worldphotography. The airport is as close as possible to the real airportand will be for years to come". I don't think there could be anyone to dispute that and I saluteTony Wroblewski on a top quality airport. /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-12.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-13.jpgKey FeaturesUltra high definition 2 cm/px bespoke hand-painted ground texturesfor the immediate airport area. Having had the opportunity to visit the real Caernarfon Airport, Iwas really pleased with the quality of this scenery. It brought backmany memories and I thoroughly enjoyed my time revisiting it in thevirtual X-Plane world. Taking into consideration the purchase price of $29.95 (at time ofwriting), this scenery in my opinion is well worth its askingprice. If you enjoy small but detailed airports, then I can honestlysay Caernarfon Airport by Orbx is definitely one to consider! /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-18.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-19.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-20.jpg /images/reviews/orbxcaer/t/orbx-caernarfon-21.jpgI hope you found this review both interesting and informative.
