FSDG MauritiusPublisher: AerosoftReview Author: Rohan NairSuggested Price: $28.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_01.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_02.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_03.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_04.jpgSome time ago, there was a bitterchill in the air. And some time later, there's a dreaded virus, thatwe can't even see, wreaking havoc across the globe. We can't seem tocatch a break these days, can we? Yet even as the world slows down andremains behind closed doors, causing even the most sedentaryindividuals to want to head out, the world of flight simulation is asvivacious as ever. In these trying times, what could be better than avirtual escape to a tropical paradise in the middle of the deep blue?I made it to the Maldives. From there, I hopped over to Seychelles. Amate told me that there's a maiden there. She sells sea shells by theseashore. Try saying that five times in quick succession! Where tonext, now, as I've been confined by certain higher powers to myless-than-stellar abode for a couple of more weeks? Ah, yes, furthersouth to ex-Dodo land: Mauritius! /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_05.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_06.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_07.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_08.jpgIn case you're wondering where Mauritius is, it's in the middle ofnowhere in the southern Indian Ocean. At least, for a layman, it isquite isolated. In geographic scales, however, it is not. The tinynation, comprised of about four islands (excluding territorialclaims), is down there abeam of Madagascar to its east. Reunion islandis southwest of Mauritius. Far north of Mauritius isSeychelles. History lessons are in order but I'll leave it you to readMauritius' Wikipedia page, which gives a good run down of the island's past. The nationadministers four islands: Mauritius (the main island), RodriguesIsland, Saint Brandon Island and Agalega Island. Port Louis on themain island is the capital of the country. Mauritius is a tropicalcountry and home to a plethora of flora and fauna, many of which areendemic. The region was also the sole natural habitat of the nowextinct Dodo bird. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_09.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_10.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_11.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_12.jpgAerosoft have published an X-Plane 11 scenery package for Mauritiusdeveloped by FSDG. Let's take a look and see if it'll find a niche inyour scenery library. FSDG promise a complete, detailed coverage ofMauritius, an accurate and detailed rendering of the country's primaryinternational airport, a skydive airport, SAM jetways, significantlandmarks, PBR materials and performance optimization. This is allpromised to you for about $29. It's available here on theFlightSim.Com Store and after purchase, 1.3 gigabytes worth ofdownload stand between you and your scenery package. There's noinstaller for the scenery but a brief manual will walk you through thesimple, familiar and standard installation process. Minimum system requirements are stated as any version of X-Plane11.30 or higher, a 3.0 GHz dual core processor, 4 GB of RAM and a DX11capable graphics card with at least 1 GB of VRAM. Any Windows OS fromXP onwards is supported and good news for you Mac folks as MacOS issupported too. I did the review on a 3.6 GHz 4th Gen. i7 with 16 GB ofRAM and a 4 GB GTX 960M running X-Plane 11.41 and Windows 1064-bit. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_13.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_14.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_15.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_16.jpgStarting off in X-Plane at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam InternationalAirport (ICAO ID: FIMP, IATA ID: MRU), the results are visible rightoff the bat. The drab look of the default X-Plane ground textures arenow replaced by vivid shades of green. Photo-realism is quiteevident, particularly around the coastline. There's plenty of autogenin and around the area too. The main island definitely looks a lotmore lively now. On terra firma, the airport is drasticallytransformed with high quality textures and features. We'll take a ridearound the airport after an aerial tour of the island. X-Plane pilots have, for many years, looked down at the groundtextures from their fast moving lofty perches with distaste. Thiswon't be the case with FSDG's Mauritius, however. And we owe that tothe use of satellite imagery. Vivid tones of green along with somelight blue hues at the coastlines make it clear that you're in atropical paradise. It's a step up from the default offering, so it's asight that is satisfying. However, if you're expecting a ridiculousOrbx-like ultra high level of detail in ground texturing, then thatisn't the case. Getting up close and personal with terra firma revealsa fair bit of blurriness. This is of course, not at all felt from morethan a couple thousand feet up. Whether it's an urban, suburban, rural, or coastal area, the ground textures are splendid. Therendition of the main island, texture-wise, is quite authentic. To sumit up, this scenery package provides some realistic, vivid and goodground textures. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_17.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_18.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_19.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_20.jpgAuto-generated scenery and ground textures go hand-in-hand tocomplement each other. This scenery pack sports autogen for the wholemain island. If you're into concrete jungles, then there's some ofthat. Otherwise, there's a lot of the green jungle especially in themountains. Apart from that, you've got some suburban buildings, andcountryside barns among the fields too. In terms of quality andfidelity, the autogen doesn't quite earn the excellent adjective butit isn't too bad. Get down low and slow to find a few opulent resortshere and there. Possibly, even a solar panel array. Port Louis, thecapital, looks nice with its port and all but I can't find the 400feet tall Bank of Mauritius tower! It's the tallest building in thecountry. I was hoping to find more detail in some of the significantlandmarks. The level of detail of autogen is homogeneous throughoutthe main island, though. The island's road network is modeled and ifyou can dodge the traffic, is a good place to get down to fulfill anysudden urgent biological need. There are just two airports, far partfrom each other, on the island. Night lighting is expansive and isquite impressive. Almost all roads are and buildings have lighting onand around them. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_22.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_23.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_24.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_25.jpgThe main island of Mauritius features hills and mountains, someby the sea and some inland. Mesh quality is, well, maybe aboveaverage. More than that, what caught my attention was the developerscalling out that Rodrigues island is not covered. This led me tobelieve that Saint Brandon and Agalega are modeled. My daredevil deadreckoning flight in a non-RNAV aircraft to these islands over themerciless tropical southern Indian Ocean (excuse me for doing this;one tends to do such things when in quarantine) resulted in abittersweet climax. I was glad that I made it and didn't end up asvirtual shark food. At the same time, I was disheartened to find bothof the islands to be un-modeled. However, both islands are very smalland there wouldn't really be much to see on either if they weremodeled. Fasten your seat belt as we're coming back around for alanding to the international airport and short a hop to SkydiveAustral. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is the maininternational airport and pretty much the only air gateway toMauritius. The airport is the hub for Air Mauritius, the flagcarrier. It has a couple of terminals, a single runway and is situatedin the south-eastern corner of the country. The airport is seasonallyserviced by full service and holiday airlines from Europe, the MiddleEast and Asia. FSDG have created a realistic and up to date renditionof the airport. The layout is accurate and high definition textureshave been used for the aprons and terminal buildings. Auxiliaryairport buildings have also been modeled. The airport also sportsseveral static objects. Animated jetways are made available via theexcellent and free Scenery Animation Manager plugin. All of the gateshave docking guidance systems too. There are realistic flood lights atnight too. The virtual Mauritius airport experience is quitepleasing. The screen shots should speak for themselves. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_26.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_27.jpgIf you're a more unconventional kind, however, then head somedistance north-northeast of the international airport to come uponSkydive Austral. It's not much, really, but it's a spot for the moreadventurous kind. As the name suggests, this is where Mauritius'skydiving flights start. There's a few hangars and unfortunately, aderelict and tawdry looking dirt runway! This along with internationalairport are about the only two places you can land a plane at inMauritius island. Let's not forget the number of paramount importance in a flightsimulator: the frame rate. FSDG have been true to what they claim,i.e., striking the balance between performance and quality. Away fromthe island's main airport, there's barely any noticeable drop in framerate. At the airport, you will loose a few frames owing to theamount of detail in the area. Only a few, however, and it shouldn'treally perturb you lest you're already riding on the edge with low-endhardware. Be wary that night lighting at the airport will take away acouple of more precious FPS on low end systems. For those with mediumperformance or better systems, performance will most probably not be acause for bother. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_28.jpg /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/t/fsdg_mauritius_29.jpgSo this what you get with this scenery package. The internationalairport is great for jet jockeys. The rest of the island is a pleasingsight during takeoff, landing and a leisurely Saturday morning generalaviation flight. In summary, this is a good scenery package with acompetitive price point. You get a great rendition of an internationalairport along with complete photo-realistic coverage of Mauritiusisland. If you're looking for high quality payware scenery forMauritius in X-Plane 11, then this is the way to go. Yes, there are afew quirks but considering the price point and multitude of offerings, this does qualify as a good scenery package. That's my twocents. Please feel free to leave a comment if you have any queries, suggestions or constructive criticism. Stay safe and keep othersaround you safe. Wish you all clear skies and smooth landings. /images/reviews/fsdgmaur/mauritius.jpgRohan Nair Purchase Aerosoft - FSDG - Mauritius For X-Plane
