  1. /images/notams/notams22/just0829.jpgAlongside their work on the upcoming RJ Professional, the JustFlight development team have been busy making even more improvementsto the 146 Professional for MSFS, including upgrades to the EFB tabletand navigation options. In the next update, due for release in September, we will beupgrading the EFB tablet with new features and improvements based onall the feedback that we’ve received since the 146 was released. Thescreenshots below highlight some of those upgrades: Interactive checklists, in addition to the existing MSFS checklist supportA top-of-descent calculator with the option to manually input altitudes, speeds and descent requirements or to have those sync'd from the simAn on-screen/virtual keyboard, especially useful for VR usersAn improved Navigraph charts screen with automatic selection of departure and arrival airports based on your SimBrief OFP, and ability to favourite charts for quick referenceMETARs for your SimBrief OFP departure, arrival and alternate airportsThe update will also include numerous fixes and other improvements, such as even better performance (FPS), higher resolution annunciatorsand flight model tweaks. But the upgrade work doesn’t stop there! 10. 146 ProfessionalPublisher: Just FlightReview Author: Joshua MooreSuggested Price: $74.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngDisclaimerWhen I was sent the Just Flight BAE146I expected to have the review done in a week or two. What I did notexpect was to have my real life come sweeping in and put it on holdfor a little while. I was trying my best to get my Instrument Ratingfinished before I leave for Air Force C130 loadmaster training, butour weather had other ideas, and thunderstorm season has not been tookind to us. The second big thing that took me away from the review wasa Commissioned drawing with a deadline, so that took priority. Nowwith that out of the way, I have a bit of time to get to fly this birdacross the UK! /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-1.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-2.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-3.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-4.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-5.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-6.jpgIntroduction And HistoryThe British Aerospace 146 was first sketched onto drafting paper in1973 as a concept aircraft to fill the gap between the smallerregional airliners such as the Fokker F27 and larger aircraft such asthe 737 and BAC-One-Eleven. Designed to be a short field performanceaircraft, it was powered by four Avro Lycoming ALF-502H engines andwas given a high wing t-tail design. Envisioned to be a simpleairplane, it lacks the typical thrust reversers and instead has fullwing spoilers and a large airbrake in the tailcone that can aid insteeper descents. The aircraft design would go on to be improved intothe Avro RJ, with more modern avionics, new engines, and generalimprovements to the aircraft. I have flown the Avro RJ in FS2004, butnever wanted to fly the 146 as it was a bit too difficult being moremanual. Throughout the lifespan of the BAE146-AvroRJ, 387 exampleswere built, and still today over 200 are flying, making it one of themost successful aircraft produced in the UK. Now with a basic historylesson complete, let's take a look at the Just Flight rendition of it! /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-7.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-8.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-9.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-10.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-11.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-12.jpg Documentation And First ImpressionsStarting off with the documents, we have an FMC guide and a247-page manual going through the systems, with a tutorial flightincluded, which starts at page 167 and lasting through to 195. I flewthis flight a couple of times, and though basic, it will certainlyteach you how to fly it! A separate pdf with just the tutorial flightwould be nice, but the included one works fine as well. After loadingthe simulator into the menu we are greeted with 3 new models. JustFlight was nice enough to include a cargo variant of the 146, though Iwas dumb enough to forget to take screen shots of it to include inthis review. The modeling is very well done, and Just Flight has onceagain done a superb job with both the exterior and interior model ofthis aircraft. The texturing is quite good, at least from adistance. If you are a pixel counter when it comes to text and thingsin the cockpit, you need not bother counting. I've already done thatfor you, and most of the text is 13 pixels tall and easily visiblewhen you zoom in a bit. This could use some work on Just Flight's partto up the resolution of the textures, as they let the amazing modeldown just a bit. /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-13.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-14.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-15.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-16.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-17.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-18.jpgTabletJust Flight has been kind enough to include a tablet in the flightdeck, which can be toggled on and off via a click spot. It is yourstandard tablet with all the functionality one would expect withAviTab, including Navigraph integration and so on. I made frequent useof the charts to assist me on my FMC absent flights which was a goodbit of fun. They also have the doors, fuel, and payload controlsprovided directly through the tablet, making it easy to load or unloadthe aircraft. When it comes to pushback, just remember to remove thechocks from the tires, as they aren't just eye-candy, they actuallywork. Good on JF for getting the details! /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-19.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-20.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-21.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-22.jpgExterior Model And TexturingThe BAE146 is certainly an interesting looking aircraft, and JustFlight has captured this perfectly. The exterior model is really quitegood and holds its own when closely examined. The texture work on theexterior complements works really well with a realistic amount ofweathering applied to the model. One thing that will be interesting tosee is how it will interact with the new lighting engine, or if theexisting textures will be supported. Some of Laminar Research's videoshowed the fuselage reflecting onto the wings and super realisticreflections of the environment. How this will affect add-ons I don'tknow, though it is probably already being discussed behind thescenes. The exterior overall is up to Just Flight standards, and Ihave no complaints. /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-23.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-24.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-25.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-26.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-27.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-28.jpg Interior Model And TexturingThe interior of the BAE is not over the top but is not lackingeither. The modeling of the flight deck is done quite nicely and thereare a decent number of animations throughout, though I could not getthe windows to open, something that is normally standard. When itcomes to the cabin, the model is again quite nice, but if you'relooking to get that nice wing view out of the window, it's quite apain to get to. There is a box that prevents you from clipping out ofthe inside, and this is placed too far away from the windows to get agood view. I managed to slip out of the bounds, come in from outsidethe plane, and then back in far enough to get interior sound but havea full view of the outside. The texturing is one area where this JustFlight model could use some improvement. The flight deck looks goodfrom a distance but get close up and you can see the textures degradein quality. This is noticeable on any text when you zoom in, but ifyou aren't a pixel counter it isn't a huge factor and shouldn't deteryou from the aircraft. /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-29.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-30.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-31.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-32.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-33.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-34.jpgSystemsWalking into the airplane and looking through the manuals showsthat this model is by no means a study level aircraft, but itcertainly is not a half working simulation. Almost all the buttons inthe cockpit are clickable and have an impact on the aircraftoperation. The FMC is one part of the airplane that I hope Just Flightwill replace as it uses the current default FMC. A more accurateHoneywell GNS-XLS computer would be preferred, but we will have tosee. The TMS is an interesting piece of tech that I have yet to fullygrasp, but from my limited experience it worked well without anyissues. There is a weather radar onboard but I either never found athunderstorm, or X-Plane default live weather just does not simulatecumulonimbus very well. The current depth of the systems is by farsufficient to have an enjoyable flight experience, and I am thoroughlyimpressed with the level Just Flight has gone to with their systemssimulation. /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-35.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-36.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-37.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-38.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-39.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-40.jpgFlight Characteristics And SoundsThe BAE146 in terms of flying characteristics is the most manualairliner I have ever flown in a flight simulator. It hand-flies like adream, but it is very very manual. You have to babysit every step ofthe process and constantly monitor the autopilot. There is no verticalspeed selector, so you must switch to CWS mode, pitch to your desiredattitude or VS, click the VS hold, and turn off CWS. The aircraft willthen hold this vertical speed so be mindful of your airspeed. There isan LNAV mode if you do not wish to fly VOR to VOR, however it is thedefault FMC and not really accurate to the aircraft. I tried the LNAVand VNAV on the airplane, and while the LNAV worked flawlessly, theVNAV did not work, so keep this in mind and have your math skillssharp for figuring out your required descent speed and TOD point. Theaircraft is very easy to land and handles beautifully on the finalapproach even at slow speeds. The sounds that this aircraft uses are (to me), a split cake. Onone half you have some of the most immersive interior sounds I haveever heard in my flight simming journey, and on the other side, theexterior sounds are like a hollow vacuum cleaner. They just sound sofake. I am constantly blown away by how every little switch that iscontrolling hydraulics, air or electrical has its own sound, only togo outside and hear this horrible engine sound. On the ground it isn'tbad at all. It is only when the engines are at a climb or cruise powersetting from the exterior view. It's really a hard thing todescribe. Luckily this is not heard as much as most of my time isspent inside the aircraft rather than outside. I would love to see theexterior sounds lifted to the same level of immersion that theinterior sounds provide. Just Flight was kind enough to provide a copilot who makes calloutson takeoff and approach to announce thrust set, V1, rotate, positiveclimb, flaps retract, extend, and other small things. This is a reallyhelpful addition and I'm happy to see it included. There are also GPWScallouts, however they were very quiet, and I could not find anywhereto make them louder. For this I recommend doing some pattern work tillyou have a good idea of when to flare, as it trains your sightpicture. It is present even in a flight sim. /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-41.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-42.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-43.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-44.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-45.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-46.jpgConclusionThe BAE146 by Just Flight is an interesting bird. On one side, there are things like low-res interior text and marginally goodexterior sounds, but on the other hand this aircraft is the first everaircraft that has made me rely on NDBs and VORs as my primary guidancein a flight simulator. No other airplane has made me do that in asim. Sure, I had an FMS right there, but this was a challenge, and Iwanted to put what I was learning in the real world to the test in thesim. To my surprise, I had an absolute blast with this airplane andmade many flights across the UK with this lovely bird. It is really abreath of fresh air to step away from the vast world of programmingFMCs, glass cockpits, and autothrottles to fly this classic 4 engineregional aircraft. That said, I really hope Just Flight goes and addsthe Avro RJ to the mix for some upgraded engines and avionics toappease those who can't fly without the magenta. For 74.99 USD, itisn't cheap, but it is really quite good. I highly recommend this toanyone that is wanting to take a step back from the glass cockpits oftoday's aircraft and fly with a lot more hands on throughout theentire flight. I look forward to flying it again! /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-47.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-48.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-49.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-50.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-51.jpg /images/reviews/jfbae146/t/Just-Flight-BAe146-XP-52.jpg/images/reviews/jfbae146/title3.jpgJoshua Moore Purchase Just Flight - 146 Professional for X-Plane 11 Also available for Prepar3D v4/v5
