Solo Around Australia, True Story, Part 3 (MSFS in a German FK9) By Frank's MS Flight Sim Come join Aussie Owen Zupp, airline pilot and award-winning aviation writer, as he flies solo in a light aircraft around Australia in 2010. Enjoy beautiful Australian scenery, especially the famous remote outback/backcountry, and learn a bit about Aussie aviation history. Part 3 is Broome through Perth to Forrest. Hope you enjoy. Cheers. Note: Owen flew an Australian Jabiru J230 but there isn't one in MSFS yet, so we'll use a sort-of-similar German FK9 Mk IV in this Part 3 video, with real-live footage of the FK9 at the end of the video. Anniversary of World's Worst Civil Aviation Accident By Frank's MS Flight Sim This is an updated version of my January 2023 video on the crash of two Boeing 747s (Pan Am and KLM) on the runway of the airport on the Island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, 27 March 1977. This update includes additional information on the crash from official sources, and a short interview with the surviving co-pilot from the Pan Am aircraft. With a death toll of 583, it remains the world's worst civil aviation accident. Hope you find it interesting. Cheers. New Zealand's 1st Licensed Airline, Air Travel (NZ) By Frank's MS Flight Sim Much loved and respected Bert Mercer started New Zealand's first licensed airline with his De Havilland Fox Moth in 1934 servicing the rugged, west coast of NZ's South Island. His airline, Air Travel (NZ) Ltd, grew in scope and popularity, and provided valuable service during WW2. It ceased operations when subsumed by NZ's nationalization of its airlines in 1947. Mercer himself died tragically as a passenger in one of his own aircraft in 1944. Hope you find it interesting. Cheers. Descent Planning Made Easy - NO VNAV or Calculator Required By thecorporatepilotdad Two methods used in descent planning are demonstrated. The first method is extremely simple and shows when to start the descent based on time. Method 2 shows when to start the descent based on distance and what rate of descent is required. VNAV makes descent planning easy, but for jets like the FlySimware Lear 35, there is no FMS, and no VNAV. Descent planning is easy without VNAV, and after watching this video, you will be able to plan a descent without the aid of VNAV. One thing to consider when descending is true airspeed (TAS). TAS will drop significantly from cruise altitude to altitudes below 10,000 feet (in a jet). Will descent rate stay the same during the descent or will it change? A combination of methods 1 and 2 will make descent planning easy. The simple math for both methods are shown at the end of the video. Grand Canyon Mid-Air Collision, June 1956, Arizona, USA By Frank's MS Flight Sim At 10:31 am, on 30 June 1956, TWA and UAL airliners collided mid-air over the Grand Canyon, Arizona, USA, and crashed into the Canyon. All 128 people on the airliners perished. At the time, it was the worst aircraft accident in the USA. It shocked the nation and the world. It led to the eventual radical improvement in ATC through changed procedures, new technology and more personnel. Hope this video helps us to fly even more safely. Cheers. Australia's Only Civil IFR Mid-Air Collision By Frank's MS Flight Sim Come see this sad video about Australia's only mid-air collision between two civil aircraft in IFR flight. It happened in 2020 and took the lives of four people including my own CFI. It should never haver happened. We'll look at the circumstances of the accident and what's been done since to help prevent the same sort of thing happening again. Again, the Swiss Cheese Model of Accident Causation applies here. Hopefully this video will help those of us who fly for real to be even more safety conscious.
