Operation Cartwheel — the Allied grand strategy for the Solomons and New Guinea campaigns — launched on June 30, 1943, isolated and neutralized Rabaul and destroyed much of Japan's sea and air supremacy. This opened the way for Allied forces to recapture the Philippines and cut off Japan from its crucial resource areas in the Netherlands East Indies. /images/notams/notams22/rcssolomon002.jpgThe "Jumping Jacks 44th Air Cargo Division" participated in this theater with their C-47s and C46s. 9. /images/notams/notams22/chil0308/chil0308.jpgRolling Cumulus Software - South Chile-A Dead Reckoning And PilotageFlight. Before GPS revolutionized just about everything, most of us old-timeypilot types used either dead reckoning or pilotage. Or a combination of thetwo. While the two techniques overlap in some areas, at their core theyapproach cross-country flights in totally different ways. /images/notams/notams22/chil0308/chile-1.jpgIn its purest form, dead reckoning, short for deduced reckoning, involvespicking a compass heading and holding it until you reach the next waypoint, while using elapsed time to calculate your position. If you're lucky, youhave some interim information that allows you to adjust your compass headingto correct for wind; sailors used a rock on a rope to gauge drift, but we cancall flight service and get the winds aloft along our route. Even without thecorrections, however, by holding the compass heading, you'll come outsomewhere in the general neighborhood of where you want to be. If there areno major wind changes and the leg isn't too long, you may even hit it on thenose. If you monitor your progress across the ground below, and don't keep yournose pressed to the GPS screen, you're actually navigating with a combinationof dead reckoning and pilotage. Here, ground references help to verify theaccuracy of your dead reckoning. For the first time in MSFS you will be challenged to fly like manypioneers in aviation navigated their flights. Once you try it, you willalways go back for more. Fun from start to finish--guaranteed! /images/notams/notams22/chil0308/chile-2.jpgDetailed route waypoints: distance and direction to next waypoint, exact photos of waypoints as seen in Bing or Google MapsInformation on waypoints as needed; airports on the way, rivers, highways and other reference pointsTwenty-six waypoints to destinationFive flights with weather presetsSix new weather presetsMake up your own weather at any waypointA friendly co-pilot giving you tips on each waypoint /images/notams/notams22/chil0308/chile-3.jpgPurchase Rolling Cumulus – South Chile Dead Reckoning And Pilotage Flight MSFS

  23. /images/notams/notams21/rcs0610.jpgAfter the bombing of Pearl Harbor the USA was involved in two majorwar theaters, in Europe and in the Pacific. Support for the US forcesand those of its Allies was urgently needed and the start of theMilitary Air Transport Command (ATC) commenced. All airlines were recruited to help in the endeavor and the initialsteps to make a World Traveling Airline were taken. To meet the needed requirements Air Transport Command was dividedinto nine Divisions each with a geographical sector. Thus the worlddelivery system began small and grew to formidable size. Many planes were used but it was the C-47, a conversion of thecommercial DC-3, that was paramount in all divisions of ATC. The othersthat also were of great use were the C-46, Consolidated C-87 andeventually the great C-54, it's is known that three DC-5s were used inthe Pacific. RCS has been the only provider of scenery, flights and missions ofthis great outfit in FSX and is now our pleasure to honor the greatpilots of ATC here in MSFS, who during all of WW2 performed gracefullyand heroically without making much noise! That conflict could not everbeen won without this magnificent World Airline. We hope you enjoy the scenery of some of the forgotten and closedair bases in the India/China Command as well as the dangerous flightsand missions that were part of the daily tasks of WW2 ATC.
