  7. Mega Airport Barcelona ProPublisher: AerosoftReview Author: Alex DickinsonSuggested Price: $32.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-18.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-03.jpgIntroductionAerosoft have been covering Barcelonaas an add-on for over a decade now. They have produced the airport fora variety of platforms including FS2004, FSX and P3D. Their FSX versionMega Airport Barcelona Evolutionwas one of my favorite airports to fly in and out of. Aerosoft have since upgraded their Evolution package to takeadvantage of the new features found in P3D V4 so as to bring a moreenhanced experience. Aerosoft claim that Mega Airport BarcelonaProfessional now offers P3D V4 users Dynamic Lighting, which willchange depending on weather and what time of day it is. Using SDKtechnology, they have been able to use new materials to optimiseperformance as well as improve runway 3D lighting and more. Of course, the product also comes with the usual array of features already foundin the previous versions, such as: high-resolution buildings andtextures of the airport and surrounding area, intensely modelledairport buildings (includes the interior of the new Terminal 1building), plus detailed ground markings, animated vehicle traffic, etc. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-02.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-04.jpgHistoryThe airport was first opened in 1916 and was originally used as abase for Spanish Zeppelins during the first part of the 20th century.Just like many airports during the second world war, it was subject toexpansion and rigorous improvements. In 1948, runway 07-25 was built, which still exists today. Soon after, a third runway was builtperpendicular to runway 07-25, along with a new passenger terminal andtaxiways. During the 1960s the airport yet again saw expansion, withthe runways being extended, as well as new navigational equipmentbeing installed. At the start of the 1970s, the airport first sawflights to America with Pan American who offered flights to New Yorkvia Lisbon. During the same decade, flights started to Madrid - thisroute has since become one of the most pivotal domestic air routes inthe world. Between the 1970s and 1990s the cargo terminal wasbuilt. 1992 was a critical year for the airport as the city was tohost the Olympic games. It was important that the airport was ready tomeet the increased demand, and as such, the airport expanded again andintroduced airbridges on 24 stands. This was not a wasted endeavour asthe airport within the decade, had hit 10 million passengers peryear. Also, In the middle of this decade, the iconic control tower wasopened. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-21.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-06.jpgAt the start of the 21st century, plans were laid to build a newshopping area in terminal B and new boarding modules in terminalA. Later in 2003 the third runway (parallel to the runway 07-25) wasmade operational. The next year the runways were improved to offer ILSCategory II/III in both directions. Improvements to the runwaylighting also helped the airport to operate in times of poor/reducedvisibility. In 2009 the new Terminal 1 reopened with an area of500,000 square meters. Since then, the airport has changed little, but it is possible thatit will expand further. Updates on the infrastructure andcommunication systems are planned and are already underway. High speedrail connections and improved road access are also being considered aswell as a new terminal on the north eastern area of the site. The Airport TodayThe airport today handles over 50 million passengers through itsdoors per year, this makes the airport the seventh busiest inEurope. With two terminals it sits only behind Madrid with four asthe second largest airport in Spain. The airport plays host to over 50airlines serving destinations as far away as Sao Paulo Brazil and HongKong. The airport is also the home of low-cost carriers Vueling andLevel. But unlike many UK airports, Barcelona is owned and operatedunder a government company called Aena. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-07.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-08.jpgInstallationWith any Aerosoft product the installation process is quick, simpleand easy. Usually all you have to do is hit a few buttons and within fiveminutes the airport is installed. Barcelona professional is nodifferent, as it sports a traditional, simple installation process, which comes in very handy for people like me with very littletechnical knowledge who sometimes can even struggle to turn on acomputer. However, during the installation process, I was unexpectedlysurprised to be offered a chart viewer to view LEBL charts. I reallylike this feature, as it's nice not to have to go digging aroundonline (or in folders), to find the relevant charts. However, don'texpect to get a whole collection of airport charts like a Navigraphsubscription. Instead you only get the airport that you have justpurchased, in this case, Barcelona. All the same, I believe this to bea smashing idea by the folks at Aerosoft! Configuration ToolsAfter you have installed the product, you are provided with a menuoption in which to select and deselect various aspects of the scenery(as shown below). /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-22.jpgIf you have a sensitive system where you need to watch thoseframe rates, it can be helpful to play about with this feature, asthis could help optimise performance. In addition, you can also access the manual using this app. Themanual itself is online so you will need an internet connection. Ipersonally felt the manual to be very lacking, as it only had detailsabout installation and a few other features. Also, the manual had manysections written in different languages which made it more difficultto read. Non-Commercial FlightsFor non-commercial flights there is parking available in the northwestern area of the airport near the Iberia maintenance hangar. Thisis labelled on Jeppesen maps as areas R-0 and R-1. Stands 1 - 71 areused for parking a range of aircraft including light Cessnas, tolarger aircraft like the Falcon 900 business jet. This apron has aunique layout because after stands 1 - 11 they gradually get bigger andfurther apart. The area is highly detailed with beautiful groundtextures, just like the rest of the airport. There is also a privateterminal called 'Terminal Corporativa' which is modelled with someexcellent office buildings. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-09.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-11.jpgTaxiway And SignageThe detailed signage on the taxiways and aprons makes it easy tofind your stand with very little trouble. As well as being accurateand clear, they also look realistic both during the day and night. The textures include dirt patches and multiple cracks, which addseven more realism. My only criticism however, is that the cracks seemto be repeated across multiple areas, which slightly downgrades theexperience. Overall though, the taxiways look fantastic and realistic. Most of the taxiways themselves are made of asphalt and this can beobserved by the black textures used on most of the taxiways. Whenentering the ramp however, the textures turn grey to replicateconcrete, which again, is highly authentic. Cargo And Passenger Terminal BuildingsWhen it comes to the terminal buildings, they are beautifullymodelled and highly accurate. Terminal 1 has a full interior modelled(something not seen on the majority of airport sceneries), and whichadds to the authenticity and overall experience. Many details such asflight information screens, passengers and the boarding gatesthemselves are present, and it all looks fantastic. However, I amslightly disappointed that this feature could not be replicated forTerminal 2. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-01.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-16.jpgWhen it comes to the cargo terminal, the level of detailing is nodifferent. There are many superb buildings placed in accurate areas, and as such, you can really tell that Aerosoft have got a real eye fordetail. Of course, all the cargo operators such as DHL and FedEx havetheir own buildings which are included, and placed appropriately. One of the things I did notice however, was that there were nostatic aircraft. This was a feature included in previous versions ofthe scenery, but Aerosoft have not included it in the V4 version. Inall honesty though, I have to say this is a feature I will not miss,as I felt the static aircraft on the FSX version where lacking indetail. The Automatic Docking System is available on most of the stands, and will place your aircraft on its associated parking line (dependingon aircraft). The jetways themselves are well modelled and are just like the realones found at Barcelona, but unfortunately, they are not SODE bydefault. It is possible to enable SODE jetways by downloading a patchfrom the Sim-wings web site. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-20.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-10.jpgThe Iberia maintenance hangar stands as a towering building acrossthe entire complex, and as I had seen photos of the hangar doors open(showing aircraft inside), I was eager to see if this was possible inthis scenery. However, after investigating, I cannot find a way toopen the doors as they are closed by default. You can also find many airport vehicles scattered about the place, such as push back tugs and passenger buses. These animated vehiclesstick to the roads and do not cross live taxiways or runways, so thereis no danger of crashing into them whilst taxiing about. RunwaysThe runways themselves feature many small details that yet againadd to the authenticity of the scenery. They are covered in tire markswhich adds to a slightly worn look. Also, just like the realBarcelona, they have rapid exits almost everywhere. The piano keys andmarkings are placed where you would expect them to be, and overallprovide a very good representation. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-19.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-13.jpgLightingOne of the main advantages of using P3D V4, is its use of dynamiclighting. This is perhaps most noticeable at night, as stands, terminal buildings and runways all look great. Compared to the FSXversion, it is a big improvement. You can now see 3D lights on therunways, and the difference they make is quite remarkable. The only criticism I have with the lighting is the intensity ofthem near the runways. The flashing orange lights that you see beforeyou get on the runway are dim, as are the taxiway signs. PerformanceWhen it comes to performance it is important to note that this willdiffer for everyone. Different specifications of computers mean thatsome may be able to deliver more FPS (frames per second) thanothers. I have just purchased a new PC specially for P3D V4, but Iwould not describe it as top of the line. As such I keep my FPS lockedat 24 FPS, as I find this setting to be the most optimal. During thewhole time I was testing this product, I had no freezing issues, norany other similar issues even when using Active Sky, GSX andVpilot. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-17.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-14.jpgSurrounding AreasAerosoft have also included a photo scenery with this product, andone I believe enhances the scenery no end. When flying an approach torunway 25R, you can see the beautiful city of Barcelona to your right, and in my mind, makes for one of the most picturesque approaches inEurope! GSXIf the airport cache is up to date, you should have no issues usingGSX. GSX is seamlessly integrated with this airport, and I experiencedno issues whatsoever. However, I would prefer to use the dockingsystem to help me park, rather than the marshaller, just to ensure Ipark right on the line. ConclusionOverall, I am very impressed with this version of Barcelona fromAerosoft. Thanks in part to P3D v4, this upgraded scenery offers afantastic experience both during the day and at night. Combined withfantastic performance as well as large amounts of detail, this airportis certainly high on my favorites list (I just can't get enough offlying into and out of this airport). There are only one or two smallthings that could be improved on, but these are all minor. /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-15.jpg /images/reviews/megabarc/t/mega-airport-barcelona-12.jpgSo, if you are looking to fly into the great Catalan city ofBarcelona, then Aerosoft's P3D V4 version is definitely one of thebest! 10. Review: Orbx CityScene BarcelonaBy Michael Hayward /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025134931_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135017_1.jpgFollowing on from their hugelysuccessful CityScene Gold Coast, Orbx have now released their secondin the series of CityScene products; Barcelona, the largest city inCatalonia, Spain. Created by Allen Kriesman (Scenery Solutions andUTX fame), these incredibly detailed sceneries contain the followingfeatures: Highly detailed city and urban landscapes brought to life Accurate and detailed buildings that go far beyond the limitations of the MSFS/P3D autogen systemRealistic photoreal/satellite ortho-imagery baseDense and highly-accurate vegetation placementRoad traffic, vector, mesh (DEM) and landclass where requiredFull five seasons (where applicable) and complete night lightingImportant POI, landmarks and features modelledOptimised for the best balance between performance and detail /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135027_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135101_1.jpgWhat/Where Is It?CityScene Barcelona covers the entire city. This includes the maincity from the coast, to the Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola, and then stretches out towards some of the more rural regions of thecity to the north and south, going as far as Badalona and Castelldefels. Within this region you have Barcelona El Prat Airport (LEBL) aswell as numerous famous landmarks, including FC Barcelona's stadium,Camp Nou, and the world famous Cathedral Basilica de Barcelona. InstallationAs with all sceneries from Orbx, installing Barcelona was a breeze, with the FTX Central 3 launcher automating the entire process. /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135118_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135145_1.jpgDocumentationOnce installed, you will find a nice and healthy 12-page 'UserGuide' readily available, which contains numerous facts aboutBarcelona, setting up the scenery, and developer credits. It's aninteresting read and one that I recommend reading through on purchase. BarcelonaBarcelona is famous for its architecture, and I must say thescenery did not disappoint in this respect; far from it, as it lookedsimply fantastic! For the base layer of the scenery, Orbx employ aphotographic scenery across the entire region. This is satelliteimagery at 1 meter per pixel, spread across the entire map and isideal for VFR flying. When departing from El Prat, or even justcruising over the city at high altitude, this gives you an astonishinglevel of detail; something not seen with any other add-ons. Asmentioned above, if you're mainly a VFR flyer, you will find thislevel of detail totally amazing! /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135235_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135301_1.jpgBy using VFR Scenery, it also means that all of the road layouts, plus the building positions, are as accurate as what is currentlypossible in a simulator. Nothing looks out of place, and for thosethat live in the city, or have visited it and know it well, everythinglooks as you would expect it to. Being the perfectionists they are, Orbx have also worked on theground mesh. This includes accurate topography for the city andsurrounding mountains, as well as a reworked coastline. The El BesosRiver, which flows alongside the B-10 and C-33 motorways, has alsobeen defined through this mesh, with the ground lowered, forming theriverbank on either side. This continues right down to the sea wherethe mesh then opens up and fits around the coastline. I must point out however that some of the buildings and streets canbe repetitive - but this is no bad thing, in fact quite the opposite. In FSX and P3D, the simulator only needs to load a mesh once, to whichit can be used as many times as it needs worldwide without itaffecting performance. This is why the default simulator only usesaround 20 building models to fill autogen worldwide. In contrast,Orbx have maybe 100 building models defined, which it then uses over100,000 times across the entire Barcelona region. When combined with812 hand placed objects, the result is a fantastic looking andplausible scenery! /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135331_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135359_1.jpgFor those of you who enjoy stats, how about these: trees accountfor just under 1 million objects across the entire add-on, with themap containing over 1.2 million objects (around 10% of that beinghand-placed and the majority being based on OpenStreetMap data). Asyou can see, with Orbx, as always, level of detail is key, and is oneof the reasons why they have such an incredible reputation for qualitysceneries. Landmarks And Defining FeaturesThere are plenty of landmarks dotted around Barcelona to exploreand enjoy; too many to talk about in detail, so I will concentrate onthree I personally enjoyed. The first is Camp Nou, which has been modelled to match that of thereal stadium. Being the biggest football stadium in the world, youcan even see the detailing of the pitch and stands when flying upclose. The area surrounding the stadium has also been modelled, withthe car park containing a few vehicles, and the surrounding parkpopulated with trees. If you happen to be a flight simmer with apassion for football, this landmark is a definite go to area! /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135419_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135449_1.jpgNumber two is the Port of Barcelona, which has been modelled tomatch those of its real-world counterpart, and includes; dockingcranes, harbor roads, warehouses and container ships. The port itselfspans across the southern coast of the city and helps bring runways25L and 25R approaches to life. The harbor also includes thesheltered wall, just off the coast, enclosing the area and shieldingit from the waves. Finally, we have the Basilica de Barcelona Cathedral, and this isabsolutely stunning! This high-quality model details each spire, window and step of the cathedral, making it a wonderful landmark tospot when in the air. Note: due to the high detailing of the model and the memoryrequirements needed to view it, 32-bit simulators such as FSX and P3Dv3 are recommended to disable the cathedral from appearing. /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135551_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135611_1.jpg Barcelona El Prat AirportFor those that do not own any specialised scenery of Barcelona'smain airport, Orbx have provided a helping hand with its own modifiedversion. While not much more than a modified AFCAD, this really doesimprove on the default area, and provides it with an up-to-datetaxiway and runway layouts, as well as ensuring that everything fitsnicely with the photographic element of the scenery. The result ofthis means that when on final and on the ground at El Prat, there areno random taxiways and runways that lead away from the main airportlayout. If you do however have a modified scenery for Barcelona's airport, then in the FTX Central launcher, there is the option to disable thismodification and thereby allowing you to use your current airportadd-on without it being affected. Note: just remember to move it above your Orbx entries in theScenery Library for the best results so as to avoid clashing. /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200612_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200718_1.jpgNight EffectsUpon viewing the night lighting effects for the first time, I mustsay I was very impressed! As the sun started to set over theMediterranean Sea, Orbx had managed to define the 3D volumetric nightlighting across the entire landscape, and the results looked totallystunning. The dark night sky, combined with the lighting from the buildingsbelow, transformed the busy daytime rush of the streets, to a muchcalmer and relaxed scene. As the city went to sleep, lights lit upthe highways for miles on end. Highly atmospheric and incredibly welldone! /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200512_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200534_1.jpgBarcelona, being a coastal city, means you can see where the nightlighting ends and the Mediterranean Sea begins. The transition fromcomplete darkness to coastal gives you a completely different feel toflying, with a clear definition from flying over a very populatedarea, to the sea, with nothing but water below. The same can also besaid about the rural mountains to the north, with the odd country roadand motorway heading out of the city and into other parts of thecountry. Seasonal TexturesUnfortunately, CityScene Barcelona does not come with any seasonaltextures. The reason being, Barcelona doesn't see four highly definedseasons, it just gets reasonably warm and quite cold, with snowgenerally being quite light (if at all). Due to this relatively small change, Orbx probably decided to leaveeverything in 'summer mode' to save on file size (totallyunderstandable), but a change in the VFR underlay would still havebeen nice to see as an option. /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135657_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135739_1.jpgOpinion And Closing RemarksBarcelona is a beautiful city, and the fact that Orbx have managedto portray this beauty in this scenery, is a testament to the skill oftheir development team. Yes, there is the odd repetition of buildings, but the fact thatit's possible to run this scenery with so much detail with so littlestrain on modest hardware, is amazing to say the least. At $24.95 AUD, CityScene Barcelona is also very reasonably priced. If you enjoy flying around Europe (especially with low-costairlines that fly regularly into Barcelona El Prat, or are a Barcelonalocal who often flies in the region), then this scenery was made foryou! /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135753_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025135811_1.jpgThe Technical BitMinimum RequirementsMicrosoft Flight Simulator X/Prepar3D v1-4Windows VistaMicrosoft .NET Framework 4.5 (FTX Central V3)1.34 GB StorageReview PC SpecMicrosoft Flight Simulator X: Steam EditionWindows 10 Professional6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 6700K Processor16 GB RAMNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745 /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200216_1.jpg /images/reviews/barcelon/t/20181025200310_1.jpgMichael Hayward Purchase Orbx - CityScene Barcelona
