  7. Review: TrueEarth US Northern California HD - X-PlaneBy Andrew ParishI must admit I have approached thisreview with some trepidation. Before taking it on, I knew little ornothing about Northern California other than where to find it on amap. Every day's a school day as they say - and I saw this a greatopportunity to learn something new. So... without further delay... Northern CaliforniaThe designation 'Northern California', whilst not formallyrecognised, popularly applies to the 48 northern-most counties of theUS state of California above the latitude 35° 47' 28" - a line whichforms the southern boundary of four of those counties. A quick checkof the Orbx scenery coverage map shows that the scenery packageclosely matches this definition.<?p> /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-03.jpgFigure 1 - Map depicting the area covered by the Northern California scenery package. The region has seen a varied history with its various parts havingbeen inhabited and colonised by Native Americans, European explorers,Spanish missionaries, Russian fur traders and Mexican settlers beforeAmerican trappers started to arrive in the 1830s. Fourteen short yearslater came the start of the California gold rush which saw over300,000 people flood to the area from across the globe and theexponential population growth ultimately gave rise to the admission ofCalifornia into the Union in 1850. As the gold rush petered out, theregion continued to expand dramatically in terms of both populationand a predominantly agricultural economy. The economy of present-day Northern California has grown from itsagricultural roots and whilst now heavily reliant on high technology,it is also known for clean power, biomedical industries, governmentand finance. It is the home of both Silicon Valley, and the statecapital of Sacramento. The region now boasts 40 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, three extended metropolitan areas, eleven major airports, tens ofnational parks, a complex road and transportation network, and eightmajor league professional sports teams. Geographically, it is home tomountain ranges and lakes, rugged coast lines and stunning beaches, and rich agricultural plains. Plenty of potential for eye-candy then, and lots of things to lookout for! Installation And ConfigurationInstallation, as with all Orbx products, is managed using the OrbxCentral tool - a free download from the Orbx web site. Once theproduct has been purchased online, it appears on the 'My Products' tabof Orbx Central and is available for download and installation. Theprocess for this can be as simple as clicking a button to start andaccepting the defaults. A scenery product of this complexity is going to take a while todownload and, depending on your internet connection, you're going tohave enough time to do anything from watching a movie to a whole boxset whilst the 52.3 GB download (43.4 GB for the SD version)completes. It's important before starting the process to ensure thatyou have the space available for the uncompressed files! Theuncompressed HD version of the scenery weighs in at a whopping195.2 GB; the SD version at a less disk-hungry 53.1 GB. The installer inserts the required entries into X-Plane's sceneryconfiguration file simplifying the process for those who are reticentto do it themselves. For me, the entries as they were created were putin the middle of the default list of X-Plane landmarks. This wouldhave worked with no issue, but I'm a stickler for tidy installs so ashort edit later they were where they needed to be. Configuration options are minimal and allow you to use defaultX-Plane road textures for the road network, or to use transparent oneswhich allow the photo realistic roads to show through. Your choicehere is a matter of personal preference - I selected the defaulttextures. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-10.jpgFigure 2 - The Northern California scenery package configuration dialog. For the purposes of the review, I disabled all other scenery andall add-ons. First ImpressionsWhere else to start, but on the ground at KSFO? A busyinternational airport close to the city of San Francisco. Rather thantaking a flight, which when you're keen to get a good look around inthe shortest time possible is unnecessarily slow, I elected to fire upthe free view camera and take it up to a reasonable altitude,and... Ah... Having chosen to fly with real-world weather I was presented withrather a grey vista, barely being able to make out the skyline of theFinancial District less than 20 km (12 miles) away. The San FranciscoBay area is of course renowned for its changeable weather and thickfog at times and X-Plane was doing a great job of replicatingthis! To gain a full appreciation of the scenery, it was going to benecessary to configure the weather manually and wind the visibility upto a level that would provide an optimal experience. Once I'd donethat... /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-08.jpgFigure 3 - First Impressions - Looking north from altitude above KSFO. Wow... Breath-taking. Even knowing it's a synthetic environment, and having seen otherOrbx TrueEarth products before, I still wasn't fully prepared for thefeast that was laid out before me. The carefully modelled nearby cityand its famous landmarks, the foreboding waters of the bay and thesuburbs that border it. Further afield, the expanse of the PacificOcean to the west and the Sierra Nevada to the east. Now, I couldn't wait to get into the air! A Flight Around Northern CaliforniaLooking at a map and reflecting on what I'd learnt about the regionI decided that the most effective way to see as much as possible wouldbe to fly a loop around it, making detours as required to spotspecific landmarks and features. The rough plan was to depart the SanFrancisco area to the south, taking in the bay and its environs, continuing south across acres of farmland before turning east towardsthe Sierra Nevada, then heading north towards the state border withOregon before heading west towards the Pacific coast and then headingback south to San Francisco. There is of course, plenty to recognise in the city of SanFrancisco itself. The famous Golden Gate bridge stands guard at theentrance to the bay; the island of Alcatraz with its prison; the SanFrancisco - Oakland Bay bridge providing a link across the bay,Telegraph Hill and the Financial district. Too many features to listindividually, but each of them faithfully reproduced. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-12.jpgFigure 4 - Characteristic hilled San Francisco streets seen from the bay with Alcatraz Island in the foreground. It's here that Orbx TrueEarth scenery comes into its own. Models ofrecognisable buildings and man-made objects in the area covered by thescenery are individually crafted, and the Northern California packagecontains over 1,000 of these, each placed in exactly the rightlocation on the underlying high-resolution photo-scenery. Less uniqueobjects are represented by generic models selected from a vast libraryand placed in precise locations. This is a compromise that balancesaccuracy with realism and, whilst a local will be able to spot thedifference easily, for the majority who are looking for a realisticexperience it delivers well. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-01.jpgFigure 5 - The San Francisco financial district taken from Telegraph Hill. A short flight around the city later, no doubt violating any numberof FAA regulations, not least of which being a flight under the GoldenGate bridge (and I defy anyone reading this to say hand on heart thatthey've never flown under a bridge in a flight sim), it was time toexplore further afield. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-11.jpgFigure 6 - From the Golden Gate Bridge looking back towards the city of San Francisco and the Bay Heading south across from the bay I found myself, not by accidentit must be said, flying over Silicon Valley - home to headquarters ofthe world's most recognisable high-technology companies. Pre-armedwith a few photos and the locations of buildings I'd never seen, itwas simple enough to spot them in the mosaic of streets passingbelow. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-13.jpgFigure 7 - Silicon Valley, and Apple's Campus in Cupertino As the sprawling metropolis finally ended, the enormity of the taskI'd set myself hit home but undaunted, admittedly with autopilotengaged, I pressed on. With the San Francisco sectional chart courtesyof skyvector.com displayed on a second monitor, navigation was, asmight be expected, a breeze with mountains, rivers and forests, roads, powerlines, cities and towns all exactly where they were supposed tobe. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-05.jpgFigure 8 - Approaching Fresno from the west; Sierra Nevada in the background. My ultimate aim by flying to the southwest of the region was toexplore the southern extent of the scenery package before heading backnorth, over the Sierra Nevada and taking in some of the sights ofthe Yosemite National Park, home to the iconic Yosemite valley and itsEl Capitan and Half Dome mountains. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-09.jpgFigure 9 - The Yosemite Valley - El Capitan and Half Dome from Tunnel View Heading north from Yosemite, the imposing heights of the SierraNevada slowly temper and eventually give way to the Cascade Rangewhich extends from Lassen Peak up through Oregon and Washington toBritish Columbia in Canada. The Cascade Range's highest point is MountRainier located in Washington state, but Northern California is hometo the range's second highest peak, and potentially active volcano,Mount Shasta whose snow-capped form stands majestically towards thenorthern limits of the state. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-14.jpgFigure 10 - Approaching Mount Shasta from the west. Continuing to the west for a short while across the Klamathmountains brought me to the Pacific Ocean, and the rugged coastlinesand stunning beaches that I'd set out to see. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-04.jpgFigure 11 - Rugged coastlines and stunning beaches. No visit to Northern California would be complete without anoverflight of the state capital, Sacramento, and cutting inland acrossfrom the coast, the mountainous coast line and hills behind it giveway to a very different ridged landscape - a stark reminder that thewhole region sits on a series of fault lines and is prone todevastating earthquakes. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-06.jpgFigure 12 - Heading inland towards Sacramento - mountains, ridges and farmland. The city of Sacramento itself, like all other cities in thepackage, is home to accurate representations of its major buildingsand other landmarks making it instantly recognisable from the air. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-07.jpgFigure 13 - Downtown Sacramento - Tower Bridge in the lower left, the Golden 1 Center in the center, and the State Capitol building at the top right Finally, heading back into San Francisco from Sacramento, Iencountered the last thing on my 'I Spy' list of things to see. Asource of clean energy, the Rio Vista wind farm. A site with hundredsof windmills, all aligned perfectly with the photo scenery on whichthey were placed and pleasingly, Orbx has managed to avoid a scenariowhere the rotation of all the windmills is synchronised. /images/reviews/orbxncal/t/orbx-trueearth-n-california-02.jpgFigure 14 - The Rio Vista wind farm. It is here though that I found my first and only problem with thepackage. Having carefully crafted the weather for the flight, I wasintimately aware of the wind settings that I'd configured. Thewindmills were facing in the wrong direction - downwind instead ofupwind. Tweaking the wind direction showed this to always the case. Ishould admit here that I have a PPL and one of the things I was alwaystaught to be on the lookout for is cues on the ground that tell mewhich way the wind is blowing. It is testament to the quality of thescenery that I found myself doing what I'd be doing in a real aircraftand when all is said and done, this is a minor issue. In SummaryThere's something in Orbx's Northern California scenery foreveryone and it's difficult to do it justice in a limited wordcount! Pilots who love to fly low and slow, navigating by dead-reckoning,will relish the ease with which they will be able to do so. Those whojust love flying around looking out of the window will be entertainedfor ages. Whether you live in the region, or you've always wanted tovisit it but never been able to, you're going to be impressed. If yourflying is more aligned to commercial operations and you ply the WestCoast of the US, there's still plenty here for you - especially if youalso consider the complementary packages in the Orbx TrueEarthrange. What struck me most as I was flying around Northern Californiathough is the diversity that exists within the region which has beenpainstakingly replicated. The route I took passed no more than a fewthousand feet over red, scorched earth, arable agricultural land andrugged forest covered mountains. Along the route were towns, citiesand metropolises. The specific features within the region I set out tosee were all there, easy to find and everything was renderedrealistically and in remarkable definition. It's been an education. I'm off to see more! Andrew Parish Purchase Orbx TrueEarth US Northern California

  16. /images/notams/notams20/uk2k0107.jpgUpdate on our scenery compatibility with Orbx True Earth. The Orbx "TrueEarth" product for P3D v4 is a photo-based sceneryproduct. Meaning it is based upon real aerial photos, but have beencolor altered to make the images a unified green color (noseasons). This product also contains autogen buildings and trees. The problem is that this autogen is made of 'blocks'. Normalautogen (default and Orbx "FTX") are individual placed trees andbuildings, the block method does have some note bad compatibilityproblems. The reference point (center) of the block of autogen determines ifthat block will be displayed or excluded. With all add-on airports youhave the ability to remove autogen, either directly (exclude code) orindirectly via a image 'mask'. These will remove normal autogen, butwill not correctly deal with block based autogen. What does this mean in visuals? It means at some UK2000 airports using True Earth, you may getareas without autogen. This is because the blocks ref point liesinside the airport photo image. It also means at some airports you will get autogen at unwantedlocations or inside other airport buildings, because its ref point isoutside of the airport photo image. There is really nothing we can do about this, there is no method weknow off to solve this, it's the way the sim is. Should I remove True Earth Airport files that conflict with UK2000Airports? Yes you should. Like Orbx FTX you should remove duplicate airportfiles from your Orbx scenery folder, so for example if you use UK2000Edinburgh, remove all "egph" files from your Orbx scenery folder, don't rely on FS scenery layering to work, there are many bugs in thescenery layer system when it comes to more than one add-on airport inthe same place. 24. Review: TrueEarth US WashingtonReviewed by Shawn Weigelt /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-01.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-02.jpgIntroductionAll I can say is, "wow!" In fact, Ikept repeating "wow," over and over again every time I took a flightover Orbx Simulations Systems' latest scenery package, TrueEarth USWashington. Ever since I started using X-Plane nearly ten years ago Ihave dreamt that a product like this would someday come along thatwould impart vivid realism to the state I call home. Finally, at longlast that product is here! I can honestly say without a doubt, thisis one of the finest products I have ever had the pleasure to reviewsince I first started writing for FlightSim.Com over six years ago. While I fully admit that I may have a slight personal bias being atransplanted Washingtonian, the accuracy of this scenery package andthe painstaking efforts and attention to detail required to bring aproduct of this magnitude to life speak for itself. /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-03.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-04.jpgI have never been nervous about reviewing a product until now. Tobe clear, I was never nervous in a negative, threatening way. I justfound my nerves slightly rattled at the prospect of writing my firstever scenery review. Sure, sometimes I jokingly talk about being "outof my element" writing an airplane review that doesn't conform to mypersonal penchant for General Aviation piston singles, but writing ascenery review is a totally different ball game! Numerous timesthroughout the testing and evaluation process I kept pondering, "howdo I put this into words?" Perhaps a small amount of trepidationcomes from the fact that I never remember reading a scenery review, let alone writing one. I guess I figured that if I was everinterested in purchasing a scenery package I would simply peruse thedeveloper's screen shots and make my decision based upon what I saw. After all, custom scenery packages are pretty much all "eye candy."There are no sound files to tickle the eardrums and no flight model tocritique and compare to its real world counterpart. /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-05.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-06.jpgOnce I got over the initial shock of the sheer beauty of thisscenery package and came to grips with how I was going to approachwriting the review, I was able to relax and just enjoy what it had tooffer. I do more than 90% of my X-Plane 11 flying in WashingtonState, and, having lived here for many years, I felt as though I wasvery well qualified to review this product. This realization gave methe confidence I needed to press forward and write the review. So,sit back, relax, drink in the screen shots, and allow me to make mycase for why Orbx's TrueEarth US Washington should be your nextpurchase for X-Plane 11. What Is TrueEarth US Washington?Orbx Simulations Systems have been creating scenery packages andcustom airports for many years, but it has only been recently thatthey started making products for X-Plane. I must confess that morethan once I have browsed their web site wistfully hoping that some daythey would finally start producing scenery for my preferred flightsimulation platform, X-Plane. That day finally came when Orbxreleased theirregional scenery packages for Great Britainas well asseveral custom airports.Since I hardly ever fly, "across the pond," I, ashamedly, completelymissed the release of those products. Only within the past month ortwo did I even realize that they were working on this project forWashington and it took my good buddy Dom Smith (an Englishman) topoint it out to me! /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-07.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-08.jpgWhat is TrueEarth US Washington? Basically, it is a high fidelityrendering of the entire state of Washington through the use of photoreal HD ortho-imagery, over 1,000 custom modeled objects, accuratelyplaced buildings, landmarks, and trees. It sounds incredibly simpleto say it or type it out, but the lengths the developers have gone toto make this scenery package as realistic and immersive as possible istruly staggering. I will get into this in more detail later in thereview. Purchasing and downloading the product from OrbxDirect isrelatively simple and straightforward. I will warn you, however, thatthis is not a small file. In fact, I had to make room on my 1TB iMacfor the entire package. Some may see this as a negative trait of theproduct, but I have reconciled that to get a product of this scope andmagnitude, one has to dedicate a large chunk of space on theircomputer to accommodate it. Everything has a cost and not just afinancial one! Orbx says on their web site that TrueEarth USWashington is 207 GB once it is installed. Yeah, that's big, so makesure you've got the space on your machine. Maybe consider investingin a good external hard drive! /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-09.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-10.jpgTaking In The SightsUp to this point I have spent hours flying over TrueEarth USWashington, predominantly from the cockpit of the excellent Carenado Cessna 172SP.I have found that flying "low and slow" gave me the best opportunitiesto drink in the sights around me as I toured some of my favoriteflying haunts around the state. While I purposefully looked aroundfor several of the well-known buildings and landmarks (especiallyaround Seattle), I was actually more interested in getting into themountains and more remote locales in the state. Washington is so muchmore than just Seattle! Many people who don't live here and have never visited the PacificNorthwest are often encumbered with the preconception of tall treesand mountains, leaden skies, and rainy weather. While that issomewhat true here on the west side of the Cascades where I live,Washington is an extremely diverse state geographically and it doesn'talways rain! In fact, summer is generally very dry here and thisshould be very obvious by the light brown shade of grass evidenced inthe satellite imagery used in the scenery package. Orbx calls it"color balanced summer imagery." This description fits what Iobserved very accurately. /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-11.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-12.jpgWashington's rugged coastline, the broad Puget Sound trough, andmajestic Olympic and Cascade ranges really only define the region ofthe state west of the Cascades. Once you cross to the east side, forests dominated by dense spire-like firs give way to more openlyspaced Ponderosa pine woods and large expanses of rolling plains, fertile river valleys, and rocky sage brush country. Much of centraland southern Washington is characterized by such terrain and is verysuitable for growing produce. Northeastern Washington near Spokane andthe Idaho state line is wooded and mountainous and very typical of thenorthern Rockies in terrain features. If it isn't obvious, I am veryfond of Washington and love living here. I was initially concerned that the Orbx developers may haveoverlooked something when designing the scenery and left out some keydetails, but that hasn't been the case at all. TrueEarth USWashington looks eerily photo realistic from every corner and inbetween and I couldn't be happier with how it came out. The citylandscapes and custom buildings, bridges, dams, lighthouses,heck...even aircraft carriers look shockingly realistic and areperfectly placed! I love looking down from the cockpit at theshoreline and feeling as though I can see through the water to thebottom. I love flying over glacier-capped mountains and throughidyllic, peaceful valleys speckled with perfectly placed trees. Whenscenery looks this good...this accurate, one is completely immersed inthe experience. I even flew over my house! /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-13.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-14.jpgSomething in how I approach flying in X-Plane 11 has permanentlychanged as I feel as though I am not just immersed in flying anaircraft, but that I am flying for real. I have never experiencedanything like this with any type of interactive form of entertainment. It is a startlingly visceral experience that trumps the logical sideof my brain that knows I am sitting at my desk in front of mycomputer. I would love to tell you that TrueEarth US Washington lookedperfect and for the most part it absolutely does. An unfortunate sideeffect, however, of utilizing any kind of ortho-imagery on a scenerypackage is that it generally looks much better from the air than itdoes on the ground. While all of the airports within the package looklike they do by default within X-Plane 11, the ground textures willlook a little worse, in my opinion, and look more like ill-definedblobs of color. This is not at all a critique of the efforts putforth by the development team, just an honest observation of this typeof scenery for those who may be unfamiliar. Outside of custommodeling every airport in the state, I don't see any way around this.Fortunately a good number of high quality Washington State airportsare in development as I type this and are coming soon! I can't wait! /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-15.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-16.jpgConclusionWhile I have already mentioned that this scenery package is a verylarge file, I have not yet got into how it performs graphically. Frommy mid-range 3.6 GHz Intel Core i7 iMac, and modest rendering settingsin X-Plane, I honestly didn't notice any drops in frame rates fromwhat experiencing before I installed the product during my typicalflying routines. When I flew over some of the large cities, however, with their abundance of buildings and custom rendered objects, I didnotice some speed reductions, but they weren't nearly as bad as Iexpected. I was, frankly, shocked with how well TrueEarth USWashington performed and can easily recommend it for people runningsuperior machines to mine. As always, though, make sure you've gotthe space for such a large download and the "oomph," to get it to run. /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-17.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-18.jpgThe price of $48.83 USD is shockingly good in my humble opinionconsidering that this is a near picture perfect rendition of an entirestate done in exacting detail. This really is one of the finestproducts I have ever had the pleasure to review. If you are aWashington resident, like me, I consider TrueEarth US Washington a"must have," file and fully recommend the investment. You willabsolutely not regret it. Even if you don't live in Washington youshould still strongly consider purchasing this scenery package as itjust looks so darn good and is a fantastic place to fly airplanes. This is the kind of scenery that, in a perfect world, would beincluded with every flight simulation platform for every region of theearth. Unfortunately for us, that just isn't possible yet. In themeantime, if you're interested in flying in a truly beautiful and aweinspiring corner of the planet, however, I think forty eight bucks isa small price to pay for what this package has to offer. It is,simply, "WOW!" /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-19.jpg /images/reviews/orbxwash/t/orbx-washington-state-20.jpgShawn Weigelt Purchase Orbx - TrueEarth US Washington
