  1. Duchess Model 76Publisher: Just FlightReview Author: Richard NurseSuggested Price: $44.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-16.jpgJust Flight is well known fordeveloping great general aviation (GA) models that bring the simmerclose to that of the real airplane. These aircraft have impressivesystems modelling, high resolution textures, and great soundpackages. Just Flight's Piper PA-28R Arrow III, and Cessna 152 Trainerare fine examples of this. Following on from this great tradition ofhigh-quality GA aircraft, this highly detailed simulation of theDuchess Model 76 has been developed by Just Flight's in-house teamfollowing comprehensive, hands-on research, with two real-life Duchessaircraft, G-BZRT and G-GCCL. This aircraft features comprehensivesystems modelling, dynamic engine wear and management realism, a fullyfunctional cockpit (even the circuit breakers work, which I love!),realistic and accurate flight dynamics based on real world performanceand handling data, and a beautiful, roaring sound package of theLycoming O-360 engines that really make you want to hop in thisairplane one more time. For the P3D installation, you can install theaircraft in the P3D root folder, or in the P3D Add-ons folder. It is asimple and straight forward installation. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-11.jpg /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-05.jpgInstallation complete. Review Of The Engine Management Realism SettingsAn excellent feature of this aircraft is the realism of real-timefailures and performance issues that are created when the pilot doesnot handle the aircraft systems with care. Engine Management can beenabled or disabled for the following engine failure/managementfeatures: Spark plug foulingVapor lockOil usage and engine failure caused by low oil quantityBattery usageThis is critical for completely enhancing the realism and immersionfor the simmer. After a few flights, I did actually notice that duringthe engine run-up, one of the spark plugs actually did show some signsof fouling, as the RPM dropped a little more than normal. But where is the carburetor icing? This airplane is equipped with acarburetor heat system, but the engine management did not featurecarburetor icing, which results in a total loss of engine power if thepilot fails to apply carburetor heat in conditions conducive to theaccumulation of carburetor icing. This is a must for any airplane witha carburetor. Review Of The External ModelJust Flight has developed the external model of this add-on usingreal-world aircraft plans and comprehensive photography of the realaircraft. The textures are HD, so the sense of realism is extremelygood, especially when looking around in the external view. The model was designed with several animations, including passengerand baggage doors, storm window, sun visors and engine exhausts. Theground equipment, which includes the chocks and tie-downs, areavailable when the battery and engines are off, and the parking brakeis set. You can also find authentic labelling and placards based onthose found in the real aircraft, such as magnetic variation cards forthe compass, etc. My only concern is that the textures are not Ultra High Resolution, and I believe that the reason is the already high GPU requirements ofP3D V5. However, for P3Dv4, a higher resolution is perfectlyacceptable (as seen in a few other add-ons). /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-12.jpg /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-07.jpgReview Of The Interior ModelThe cockpit boasts great attention to detail, as all instrumentsthat are supposed to be switchable and work in the real aircraft aredetailed in this add-on. Even the circuit breakers are clickable andanimated; every instrument is constructed fully in 3D with smoothanimations. The buttons have a very nice sound set as well: loud andrecognizable. Custom sounds are also developed for switches, doors, controls, wind noise, and more. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-10.jpg /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-13.jpg /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-06.jpgThe cabin is highly detailed, featuring wear and tear texturesbased on reference photos taken from the real aircraft to produce anauthentic environment. You can tell that real images of seats andother features were used to model the cabin. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-02.jpg /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-08.jpgReview Of Support WindowsInflight Checklist WindowThe checklist is not linked to the actual item in the cockpit, butthe user can click the item on the checklist to change its color togreen when the action has been completed. This checklist includes allnormal procedures, plus many emergency procedures as well, which isalways welcomed. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-01.jpgElectronic Flight ComputerThe flight computer shows a variety of real-time informationrelated to everything from speed to fuel burn/flow andrange/endurance. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-03.jpgTow BarA tow bar window is included to allow the simmer to move theaircraft around without having to use the slew command. The towbarworks very well, but the way it turns the aircraft is time consuming,as you must click the button many times to continue turning theairplane. /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-04.jpgReview Of The Engine Sound SetThe Lycoming O-360 has received a great spotlight in thisadd-on. The sound set is authentic and of high quality. You can hearthe blaring sound of the engines and the propeller, and it isimpressive both from inside the cockpit and outside. Much attention todetail is noticeable. Have a look at my review video, it really isthat good! /images/reviews/duches76/t/just-flight-duchess-76-09.jpgSimmer Opinion Of The Just Flight Duchess 76I believe that the Duchess 76 is a fantastic add-on for your flightsim, as it includes great systems, highly accurate modelling of theinterior and exterior with life-like high resolution texturesthroughout, dynamic engine management requirements that bring theairplane to life, and an intense sound package of the Lycoming O-360engines. Importantly, the flight dynamics are well defined andrealistic. The cockpit is my favorite, as even the circuit breakerswork! It does however have a few issues as mentioned in the review, buthopefully these will be addressed in future updates. Just Flight'sDuchess 76 is a highly enjoyable aircraft and one which I feel youwill get a lot of enjoyment from. Highly recommended. /images/reviews/duches76/title3.jpgRichard Nurse Purchase Just Flight - Duchess Model 76 for FSX/P3D Also available for X-Plane 11 Also available for Aerofly FS 2
  2. Duchess Model 76Publisher: Just FlightReview Author: Shawn WeigeltSuggested Price: $41.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_11.jpgIntroductionSomeone once said that "variety isthe spice of life." When it comes to the variety of aircraftavailable for X-Plane, I have definitely found that this old sayingrings true. As many of you know, I am a die-hard general aviation simpilot and like my airplanes to have only one prop turning on the nose. What can I say? I just like simple piston singles and feel like I amjust competent enough to comfortably fly them. Every once in a while, however, I feel the need to switch things up and try somethingdifferent to "spice up" my X-Plane experience. I have been extremely impressed with Just Flight's relativelyrecent foray into developing airplanes for X-Plane 11. My lastreview, in fact, was on theJust Flight Piper Archer III,which I am completely enamored with and has been my "go-to" airplanefor the past several weeks. Still, there is something about the"latest and greatest" airplane release that tends to pull me away frommy current stable of favorites and onto something new. Just Flight'snewest file just happens to be a dreaded piston twin, the BeechcraftDuchess 76! Twins...ugh. I know, I should really stop being sobiased, but there is something about that second engine that elicitsfear more than comfort. Is this Duchess really what I need to "spicethings up" right now, or will I immediately turn back to my trustysingles once this review is over? Let's find out! /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_14.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_15.jpgSights And SoundsThe Beechcraft Duchess 76 came about in the late 70's when pistontwins were all the rage on the General Aviation scene. After all, youweren't one of the cool pilots unless you were driving a twin! One ofthe main problems with twins, however, is that they tend to beprohibitively expensive to own and operate. The smart folks at Beech, part of the "big three" in General Aviation (Cessna, Piper,Beechcraft), came up with the Duchess design based on their Musketeerseries of singles as a cheaper alternative to Barons. Since the Baronis little more than a Bonanza with a second engine, so too would theDuchess be to the Musketeer. The reduction in cost with this "budget"line of Beeches was attained through simpler and more cost effectivemanufacturing that, as a consequence, reduced the performance of theaircraft. To my eye, the Musketeer and Duchess also look vastlyinferior to their much more attractive siblings, the Bonanza andBaron. The Beechcraft Duchess is a four-place machine powered by twincarbureted 180 hp Lycoming 0-360 engines. This tried and true powerplant is one of the most prolific and reliable in all of GeneralAviation, and having two of them aboard the Duchess makes the airplane(in theory) safer than a single. The Duchess was never built in hugenumbers; in fact, only 437 were built during a brief production runfrom 1978-1983. The Duchess is a good airplane for multi enginetraining or time building, but is usually a step toward more capabletwins like a Baron or Piper Seneca. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_32.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_17.jpgGiven my positive past experience with Just Flight aircraft, I wasexcited to load up my shiny new Beech Duchess in X-Plane 11.32.Having reviewed their excellent Turbo Arrow III/IV,Hawk T1,andArcher III,to say that I had high hopes for the Duchess would be a severeunderstatement. In fact, other than perhaps Alabeo/Carenado, JustFlight is, in my humble opinion, producing some of the best lightaircraft currently for X-Plane 11! With the Duchess all downloaded and installed into my copy ofX-Plane 11, I loaded up the sim at my usual home field of KTIW, TacomaNarrows. My immediate examination of the airplane entailed a virtual"walk around" as I panned my camera over the exterior lines of theDuchess. While I love high resolution textures as much as the nextguy or gal, 3D modeling and proportional accuracy are of the utmostimportance to me. If it doesn't look exactly like the real thing thenI could care less about how legible the lettering on the tires is!Having said that, however, I will say that the Just Flight Duchess notonly holds up exceptionally well to scrutiny when compared to imagesof the real world airplane, but the exterior textures also lookphenomenal! /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_18.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_19.jpgThis airplane has an outstanding assortment of eleven high qualityliveries from locales all around the world to include Australia,Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, Spain, the United Kingdom, andthe United States. Chances are you'll find one you like. Being anAmerican, I gravitated toward the US livery, an attractive all blackscheme with white and red striping. It looks great on the Duchess! When loaded in a cold and dark state, the Just Flight Duchess haswheel chocks in place, a tow bar attached to the nose wheel, and anempty cockpit. These static items disappear when X-Plane 11 isconfigured to load aircraft with engines running, or when the simpilot simply initiates the start up process. Just Flight has one of the best user interfaces in the industry, inmy opinion, and I have come to really appreciate its functionality.Just Flight calls the 2D pop up menu the "Panel Selector" and isaccessed by clicking on the tabbed arrow on the left side of yourscreen. This brings up an assortment of pictograms that are, for themost part, fairly intuitive. I have grown quite familiar with themenu over the past few Just Flight aircraft I have reviewed, and itsfeatures are now second nature to me. My particular favorite is theweight and balance menu, which allows the user to fill any of the fourseats, the fuel tanks, and the baggage compartment. There is a chartdisplayed to the right of the weight selections that shows how theCenter of Gravity shifts depending upon how the user loads theaircraft. Cool! /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_20.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_21.jpgThe Panel Selector has several more handy "one-click" toggles thatcan open and close doors, activate dome lights, and remove reflectionsfrom the windows and gauge faces. I could get into every feature ofthe Panel Selector for this review, but I have to leave some thingsfor the customer to figure out on their own. The bottom line here isthat if you already own any of Just Flight's aircraft, you will bevery familiar and comfortable with the user interface in their newDuchess 76. Transitioning into the interior of the airplane revealed moreoutstanding modeling and expert texture work. The cabin is fairlySpartan when compared to other Beech airplanes like Barons andBonanzas, but that is in keeping with the more economicalMusketeer/Duchess lineup. The instrument panel is fairly wellequipped and ready for IFR work. The avionics stack is comprehensiveand topped off with the tried and true GNS 430 GPS. I love the little details that Just Flight adds to their airplanesthat make them feel unique and well used, and the Beech Duchess is noexception in this regard. One of these details includes theappearance of Velcro tape framing some of the instruments where aninstructor might obscure them for training purposes. Another nicedetail is the handwritten compass deviation cards and the general wornappearance that the instrument panel and high traffic areas of thecockpit possess. The texture work here is simply masterful and givesthe file a sense of immersion not attainable with lower qualityproducts. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_22.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_23.jpgThrough my experience with testing and reviewing flight simulationaircraft I have found audio fidelity to be one of the most subjectiveaspects of the product to gauge. In the case of the Just Flight BeechDuchess, I cannot say whether or not the included sound files are"true to life," when compared with the real airplane. I have neverflown in a real Duchess, and I certainly cannot verify the soundfidelity when comparing it to video camera footage on YouTube. What Iwill say, however, is that, to me, the Just Flight Duchess sounds goodand like I would imagine a real one sounds. That is to say, the soundquality sounds good enough to me to give me the impression of flyingin a real aircraft, especially when heard through my nice Boseheadphones! I particularly enjoy the "volumetric" nature of the soundfiles, especially when panning the camera around the exterior of theaircraft with the engines running. The switches make a satisfying"snap," and the gear and flap actuations give a satisfying whir. My particular favorite sound sensation of the Just Flight BeechDuchess is the fact that I can hear when the props are out of sync.It is difficult to effectively explain it, but there is thisdissatisfying cacophony of sound produced by out of sync props thatmakes one want to immediately fix it. This is a very importantauditory cue for multi engine pilots that seem to be faithfullyreplicated in the Just Flight Duchess. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_24.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_25.jpg Flight ModelOnce I was finished ogling the Just Flight Beech Duchess I decidedI better get her into the air for some flight testing. Flying out ofKTIW I started off with some basic pattern work under no wind, standard day conditions. The handy checklist accessed through JustFlight's Panel Selector made taxi, run up, and takeoff a breeze. Iwish all X-Plane aircraft came with a built in checklist! Behaving very much like a twin, the symmetrical thrust produced bythe two engines made the aircraft track very straight down the runwayfor me, and she very eagerly leapt into the air when I asked her to atrotation speed. Getting the gear and flaps cleaned up, I reduced propRPM to 2500 and climbed to pattern altitude. My recent recreationalsimulator time prior to obtaining the Duchess has revolved aroundflying the Carenado Cessna 172SP and the Just Flight Piper Archer III.Needless to say, I was not prepared for the extra speed and climbperformance afforded by the more powerful twin. I initially had agreat deal of difficulty "staying ahead" of the airplane and, as aconsequence, my first few circuits were a little high and wide. For my first landing I flew the approach as recommended but flaredtoo late and more "flew it on" rather than flying to a stall.Subsequent landings were an improvement once I established my cockpitframes of reference and became accustomed to the pitch pressurerequired for the flare. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_26.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_27.jpgI went on to conduct several short cross county flights across theState of Washington and into Idaho and this was where I truly fell inlove with the Just Flight Duchess. In real life, the Beech Duchess isa nearly 160-knot airplane burning around 10.5 gallons per hour, perside, though pilots report speeds in the 140's as more realistic. That is a pretty hefty fuel burn for those more accustomed to singles,so it's a good thing that I'm not paying for gas on X-Plane! Allkidding aside, the Just Flight Duchess flies solidly in cruise andperforms within 1-2 knots of book values for all altitudes and powersettings I tested. This is the flight model fidelity that I cravethat brings the most enjoyment to my flights. I did some limited "engine out" testing of the Beech Duchess andcan report that, given my lack of multi engine experience, I did nothave any difficulty keeping the airplane flying, though a decent setof rudder pedals (like my CH Pro Pedals) do help in these situations. The fact that the props rotate opposite of each other helps withsingle engine performance, as it removes the "critical engine" issuefrom the equation. Single engine climb performance was sluggish, however, and through this experience it became clear why twin pilotsdesire higher performance aircraft as a step up from the Duchess. TheDuchess is a good multi engine trainer, but not the most desirableaircraft for crossing mountains or large expanses of water. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_28.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_29.jpgConclusionOverall I have been very pleasantly surprised by how much I haveenjoyed my time with the Just Flight Beech Duchess and look forward tobuilding my X-Plane 11 multi engine time with her. As I have mentioned, the visual fidelity of this model and thequality of the sound files have been rendered with a high degree ofaccuracy that is in keeping with the other Just Flight aircraft I havereviewed. Simply put, Just Flight has firmly established itself inthe world of third party X-Plane 11 add-ons as an industry leader, andtheir latest work, the Beechcraft Duchess is a convincing testament tothis. I can be very nitpicky when it comes to visual fidelityespecially, and use my best investigatory skills to look for errors.Believe me, I looked for modeling goofs on the Just Flight Duchess andcame up completely empty. One of the aspects of Just Flight aircraft that has consistentlyimpressed me has been the quality and comprehensiveness of theirincluded PDF documentation files. You might think me a little nerdy, but I am guilty of reading these manuals for the recreationalenjoyment I get out of them...they are that well presented! If youever have a question or concern about your Just Flight Beech Duchess,I would direct you to your two PDF manuals first, the answer you seekwill likely be there. Just don't blame me when you find you'vecontinued reading and actually enjoy learning about your new plane...Ialready warned you! /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_30.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_31.jpgAnother great aspect of the Just Flight Duchess is that several ofthe aircraft's systems are custom coded. The development team haspaid careful attention to make this airplane as true-to-life aspossible and it is easy to overlook these subtle enhancements. Thefuel system and electrical system of the Duchess are both custom codedand all the circuit breakers really work! In my experience with the Just Flight Duchess, graphicalperformance was very good on my modest iMac and decently highrendering settings on X-Plane 11.32. I was seeing frames in the upper20's for the most part, but I certainly didn't go crazy with weathersettings and clouds that tend to eat frame rates for breakfast.Considering the high visual quality of the model, I have nothing tocomplain about in the way of graphical performance. As always, makesure your machine meets the minimum requirements before purchase anddon't take my experience with the file as the final authority on thematter. There are just way too many variables present when it comesto how an airplane add-on performs on a given machine, so make yourpurchasing decisions wisely. /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_16.jpgSpeaking of purchasing decisions, what, exactly, is the price pointof the Just Flight Beech Duchess? Well, currently priced at $41.99USD, I think this represents an excellent value in the X-Plane GeneralAviation marketplace. One needs to consider exactly what they aregetting for their money and I hope I have done a good job outliningall that the Just Flight Beech Duchess has to offer. The combinationof excellent visual modeling and textures, beautiful custom sounds, agreat user interface, superb flight model, custom systems modeling, and comprehensive documentation really highlight the value representedhere. The Just Flight Beechcraft Duchess 76 is another fine example ofGeneral Aviation excellence brought into the X-Plane 11 world by thisfirst rate development team. If you are a faithful lover of twins, this is your next airplane purchase. If you are a "dyed-in-the-wool"single guy/gal like me, this may be the airplane that drags you overto the multi-engine side of the house. I highly recommend it! /images/reviews/jfduches/just-flight-duchess-76.jpgShawn Weigelt Purchase Just Flight - Duchess Model 76 for X-Plane 11 Also available for FSX Pictures Of All Liveries Pictures Of All Duchess 76 Liveries /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_2.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_3.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_4.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_5.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_6.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_7.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_8.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_9.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_10.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_11.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_12.jpg /images/reviews/jfduches/t/JF_Duchess_76_13.jpgPurchase Just Flight - Duchess Model 76 for X-Plane 11

  5. Duchess Model 76Publisher: Just FlightReview Author: Alex DickinsonSuggested Price: $41.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngJust Flight have recently been verybusy in their production of general aviation-based aircraft, such asthe single engine wonders of the Cessna 152 and Piper PA28. JustFlight is adding to that legacy by introducing the Duchess 76. A whileback, Just Flight created a Duchess in which I was a big fan of, so, Iwas over the moon when they announced this new version. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_13-53-41-626.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_13-53-57-889.jpgThe Duchess 76 was built by American manufacturer Beechcraft andfirst flew in 1974. However, it was not until 1978 that new ownersreceived their keys. It is very popular as a multi engine and IFRtrainer, and is still used by many flight schools, With that said, more modern aircraft such as the Diamond DA42 are slowly pushing theseolder workhorses out to pasture. The aircraft itself is powered by two Lycoming 360 piston engines, each putting out 180 horsepower. On first look, you may think that theDuchess might be lacking in power, but I can assure you that even witha full payload, you can fly comfortably just below 20,000 feetcruising at around 150 knots. With a fuel tank capacity of 103 gallons, this aircraft also showsher strength with endurance. With a total range of 780 nm, you couldmake a trip from London Denham to Rome without too much effort. The performance statistics mentioned in the Just Flight manual forthis aircraft, are almost spot on to the real aircraft, and this comesacross when in the air. LiveriesThe Just Flight version features eleven liveries in total, four ofwhich are from the UK, with the remaining including those from Europe,Australia, New Zealand and the USA. /images/reviews/duchess/t/G-BZRT.jpgG-BZRT - Used at Bournemouth Commercial Flight Training. /images/reviews/duchess/t/G-GCCL.jpg G-GCCL - Privately owned aircraft./images/reviews/duchess/t/G-BNYO.jpg G-BNYO - Previously used by Multiflight, Leeds for multi-engine training./images/reviews/duchess/t/G-WACJ.jpg G-WACJ - Used for instrument training at Wycombe Air Park./images/reviews/duchess/t/N671R_.jpg N671R - An American registered Duchess 76./images/reviews/duchess/t/D-GIGY.jpg D-GIGY - A German registered Duchess 76./images/reviews/duchess/t/F-GCLJ.jpg F-GCLJ - A French registered Duchess 76./images/reviews/duchess/t/C-GTYG.jpg C-GTYG - Used by Skyquest Aviation Ltd in Canada for training./images/reviews/duchess/t/VH-HKI.jpg VH-HKI - Used for training by Flight Training Adelaide./images/reviews/duchess/t/EC-INC.jpg EC-INC - Used for flight training in Spain by Aerodynamics Malaga./images/reviews/duchess/t/ZK-JED.jpg ZK-JED - Used for flight training by Ardmore Flying School Ltd in New Zealand.InstallationThe installation process is quick and simple. It alsohas a section labelled "Systems Guide", which provides masses ofinformation required for you to get familiar with your newaircraft. The manual also goes into detail about the various featuresincluded with this aircraft, such as an interactive checklist and theability to load saved states such as Ready for Taxi and Cold andDark. The ODM manual is the other documentation included. For those ofyou who are unaware, ODM tands for Operating Data Manual. This iswhere you can access crucial data important to flight, such astakeoff/landing performance charts. At 25 pages the documentation isvery extensive and covers various aspects (you should have no problemsynthesising the data). /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-15-51-862.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-1-26-453.jpgAnother important feature included was the flight computer. Oftenreferred to as 'whizz wheels', flight computers like E6B and CRP-5provide crucial data to pilots. In flight simulators, the process ofusing one can be quite complex as a lot of aircraft do not havethem. A few aircraft do include some tools performed by flightcomputers, but overall, because this feature is not included with thatmany aircraft, it can make flying in some situations ratherdifficult. Personally I find it quite a relief when aircraft like the Duchessinclude features such as this, as it simplifies some of the moredemanding tasks. The flight computer included with the Just FlightDuchess is able to perform a whole host of functions similar to thatof real flight computers. In my opinion, Just Flight's version is the most realistic exampleI have ever experienced. AutopilotBefore I talk about the autopilot's features, I have to say I amnot a fan of them, as I prefer to fly an aircraft manually as much aspossible. However, as all of us know, they can be extremelyhelpful. Just Flight's version of the autopilot for the Duchess worksperfectly, and I must say I was rather impressed. Unlike some GAsystems, it's not just a simple autopilot, as it includes a fairnumber of modes that I would not normally expect to see on this typeof airframe. The autopilot fitted to the Duchess is so advanced youcould almost fly an entire flight without even touching the yoke. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-1-44-827.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-1-59-118.jpgRefill Panel/ FailuresThe aircraft includes a complex engine management option which canbe enabled and disabled at the click of a button (perfect forbeginners and advanced pilots alike). This feature can be selectedunder the 'Add-ons' sections in the flight simulator (FSX/P3D). Whenengaged, this will activate the various failures incorporated withinthe model, and includes spark plug fouling, vapor lock and batteryfailure. It's nice to see that these sorts of failures can be experiencedwithin the safety of a flight simulator as not many aircraft have thisfeature. Of course, if a failure does happen, then Just Flightprovides you with the option to fix it, such as refilling the oil andrecharging the battery. This particular feature really made me feellike a GA pilot as it helped increase the authenticity of the wholeexperience. AvionicsThe avionics unit consists of a GNS 430. This GPS unit is custombuilt by Just Flight and is similar to what can be found in other JustFlight aircraft. Interestingly, Flight 1 GNS systems can also beintegrated into the Duchess should you so desire. COMs, NAV and ADFdata equipment are also equipped as standard. It goes without sayingthat you have a transponder, but this can be a bit difficult tooperate when flying in the commander's seat (it would have been niceto see some 2D panels overcome this issue). /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-2-52-499.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-22-46-459.jpgTakeoffPerforming takeoff in this aircraft is very easy to accomplish. Theaircraft will often rotate at around 71 knots minimum, which will takearound 20 seconds to achieve (35 on grass) from the time you firewallthe throttles to getting airborne. The slightest back pressure isrequired to get the Duchess into the skies, so be aware of possibletail strike! The Duchess only needs around 1000 feet to takeoff and even less toland. I am glad that Just Flight paid good attention to this, as it islittle things like this that really add to the authenticity of themodel. Flight DynamicsThe Duchess is capable of flying in day and night under both IFRand VFR conditions, but keep in mind that this aircraft is not fittedwith ice protection. This is where the fitted weather radar becomeseffective. When testing the endurance of the aircraft I found that itcould fly comfortably for over five hours at around 150 knots. With thisin mind, I feel confident that the Just Flight model matches that ofits real-life counterpart in terms of performance characteristics. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_13-56-24-881.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-2-14-890.jpgPerforming both IFR and VFR flights in the Duchess wasstraight-forward. If you are familiar with operating these types ofaircraft under the conditions mentioned above, then you will not havetoo much difficulty in flying the Duchess. When testing the aircraftfor its stall behavior, I found that it was similar to that of aPA-28, in that you would not lose a wing, but instead find that theaircraft would simply pitch down. As such the aircraft is easilyrecoverable. During testing, accurate animations were observed of thelanding gear, flaps, flight controls and other control surfaces. LandingOverall, I found that landing the Duchess was very easy and not toodissimilar to other aircraft I was familiar with. However, when itcame to applying the brakes, I felt them to be rather ineffective, asif they were perhaps worn. Of course, this could be just how theaircraft was modelled. If so, then I could see how this would beaccurate in regards to some older airframes. As such, please keep inmind the time required to stop. In crosswind landings, I would describe the Duchess as being one ofthe smoothest and easiest planes I have flown. I found the flaps were animated beautifully, but had no effect onthe handling until they were lowered past 20 degrees. Alongside this,it can be a bit difficult to slow the aircraft down when flying theapproach (there is no speedbrake on offer). /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-12-2-151.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-12-24-72.jpgSingle-Engine PerformanceBeing a twin-engine aircraft, one of the situations you mayencounter is the loss of an engine. Being able to fly with an enginedown is an important skill to master as you can expect to experienceadverse yaw in the appropriate direction, followed by an excessivebank angle. On some aircraft the effect is quite profound, butunfortunately I found the single engine performance on the Duchess 76to be very disappointing. With an engine down there is very little adverse roll and yaw, tothe extent that I would describe the behavior as unrealistic. Tocounter this in other aircraft, you would need to apply quite a lot ofrudder trim. In the Just Flight Duchess however, you will onlyexperience the slightest bank, but any attempt to straighten the wingswith the rudder trim will often result in failure, as it has verylittle effect. To experience anything from the rudder trim at all, you would needto apply it fully in a certain direction, but even then the effect isonly slight. Instead you would need to use the aileron trim which is aknob located above the rudder trim, and has much more of an effect onthe handling. In all, I felt that the single engine performance andexperience, was a bit of a let-down. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-25-5-772.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-26-13-823.jpgTrimmingTrimming is an art that takes precision and time to master, sonaturally any new pilot may struggle at first, but it's a skill thatcan easily be picked up after a few flights. For me personally, I felt that this was the biggest let down of theDuchess, as on quite a few occasions I really struggled to get theaircraft in trim. It was not impossible, but I felt it to be an overlydifficult task. This could be down to how the elevator and rudder trimwheel lacked precision. There also seemed to be quite big movementswith any adjustment in the trim. In 9/10 occasions, I was resorted tousing the autopilot to keep level (something I don't like doing). In saying that, there were a few times when I did get the aircraftinto trim, but I felt that this was too lengthy a process andformidable task. PerformanceIn terms of how the Duchess performed on my hardware, I have to sayI was impressed, especially when you factor in that my PC is far frommodern! There were no noticeable slowdowns, which was quite somethingwhen you factor in the complexity of the model involved. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-26-54-309.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-49-30-596.jpgExterior modelJust Flight claim that this aircraft is an accurately modelledDuchess, built using real-world aircraft plans and comprehensivephotography of its real-life counterpart, and I agree with thisstatement. The exterior model is quite exquisite and includesweathering in all the relevant areas, with good attention to detailoverall. One of the things I particularly liked about the model, washow the exterior featured antennas and similar equipment that areapplicable to the internal instrumentation in the cockpit. One smallpoint I would like to mention, is that the black marks trailing fromthe exhaust are (by the look of things) not accurate. For me it lookedas if a simple black triangle was placed in that area. However, evenwith this, I have to give the developers top marks for their exteriormodelling. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-58-47-127.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-51-2-459.jpgCockpit And InstrumentationIn much the same way as the exterior, the interior also shows signsof age. All of the instruments work as they should, and the layout isboth pleasing and logical. One thing I would have liked to have seenis a bit of engine vibration from the panel, but sadly this wasn'tpresent. Overall though, I found the gauges and cockpit of JustFlight's Duchess highly accurate with some truly fantastic 3Dmodelling! SoundThe samples used to reproduce the engines sounds are trulyimpressive! The feeling of sitting between two powerful engines isquite something and feels highly authentic. Also included are thesounds of the many switches found in the main panel. Along with theengines, it's an audiophile's dream! LightingThe landing lights were strong and bright, but I found the strobeslacking. Whilst there was illumination of sort, it would have beennice to have seen some lighting on the airframe. Internally, there were brightness options available for theinstrumentation, and on and off switches for the dome lights. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-54-22-818.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-54-55-686.jpgConclusionThis is certainly one of the more difficult reviews I have done, but enjoyable none the less! Just Flight have managed to get themajority of things right with this aircraft, but at the same timethere are a few issues as well (hopefully these will be addressed infuture updates). Despite this, the aircraft is still fun to fly andlooks beautiful. Flying the Duchess is an amazing experience, and one which mostpilots will enjoy. /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-57-52-328.jpg /images/reviews/duchess/t/2019-5-2_14-5-42-363.jpg/images/reviews/duchess/JFD-1005-duchess-model-76.jpgAlex Dickinson Purchase Just Flight - Duchess Model 76 for FSX/P3D Purchase Just Flight - Duchess Model 76 for X-Plane 11
  7. /images/notams/notams19/just0408/just0408.jpgJust Flight, in partnership with Thranda Design, are proud topresent the Duchess Model 76 for X-Plane 11. Following on from their award-winning PA-28R Arrow III, Hawk T1/AAdvanced Trainer and C152, this highly detailed simulation of theDuchess Model 76 is being developed by Just Flight's in-house teamfollowing comprehensive, hands-on research with two real-life Duchessaircraft, G-BZRT and G-GCCL. The Duchess is a four-seater, twin-engine T-tail aircraft equippedwith a retractable tricycle landing gear, and two 180 hp four-cylinderengines fitted with constant-speed propellers. Its IFR-capableavionics suite, excellent handling characteristics andcounter-rotating propellers make it an ideal aircraft for multi-engineflight training, and the perfect step up from single-engine aircraftsuch as the PA28.
