  1. In MSFS there is a great feature to change the registration of the aircraft to personalize the flight experience. However, the registration is black or white in almost all cases. What if I create a livery and want the registration color to match the color scheme? In the following I will explain how to change the color of the registration in a custom livery. Please note that you need to know how to create a basic livery to understand this blog. It should also be noted that the way to change the color has changed since the release of MSFS. Here I describe the latest method as of January 2024. First of all, you need a working paint job where you want to change the color of the registration. It is important that the standard folder structure for such an add-on is adhered to, as otherwise it can lead to problems. As an example, I have a livery for the LS8 from Asobo. I have created a black and blue livery and would now like the registration to have the same blue color. Please note that some folders have names that the creator is practically free to choose. Mine are different from yours. How exactly you name your folders does not matter. You simply need to be able to keep track of everything later on. Here is my existing folder structure: If you have already created your own liveries, you may have noticed that there is a line "atc_id_color" in the "aircraft.cfg" file. This sounds good at first, but is no longer usable. When MSFS was released, you could actually enter a HEX code in this line and the registration took over this color in the game. Unfortunately, this has been changed and works differently today. But where is the paint color recorded today? The answer: In the "panel.cfg" file. To get this file and avoid damaging the folder structure, it is best to copy it from the folder of the original Microsoft airplane. In the case of the LS8, this looks like this: If you don't know which folder I mean, here is the file path: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Official\Steam\asobo-aircraft-ls8\SimObjects\Airplanes\Asobo_LS8 Depending on where you purchased and installed MSFS, this path may vary. The file we are looking for is contained in the "Panel" folder. To retain the structure, we now copy it and paste it into our add-on. It should then be at the same level as our "Texture" folder. It is best to rename it so that it is easy to identify. Here is my example: If we now open this folder, there should be several files in it. In the case of the LS8, there are two. However, this may be different for other aircraft. The file we are interested in is "panel.cfg". We open it so that we can edit it. I use Notepad++ for this. However, other text editors also work. Here we can finally change our color. In the LS8, the corresponding section is called [VPainting01]. This varies from aircraft to aircraft. It is important to distinguish between "exterior" and "interior". I have marked it in red in the picture. You can either use a CSS color or enter a HEX code as the color. I would now like to enter the HEX code "0074D3". This is the same blue as I used on the paintwork. This is done as follows: All letters in the HEX code must be written in lower case. You must add "0x" before your code. (Not a "#"!) Don't forget to save this file! Now we switch to our "aircraft.cfg" of the add-on. Here we have to enter that our new "panel.cfg" should be loaded instead of the normal one. For this, it is important that you still know what you have named your "PANEL" folder. Don't forget to save this file as well The last thing you need to do now is to adjust "layout.json" so that MSFS knows that there is a new folder in your add-on. The easiest way to do this is with the following tool: https://github.com/HughesMDflyer4/MSFSLayoutGenerator If you now restart MSFS, your registration should have the color you selected. Have fun with it
  2. The Crash that led to A.T.C. By Frank's MS Flight Sim The crash of a DC-2, Kyeema, in the Dandenong Ranges near Melbourne, Australia, and the loss of all onboard - 4 crew and 14 passengers - led to a national outcry and high-level inquiry that subsequently led to the development of one of the world's first Air Traffic Control systems that became a model for other countries. Hope you enjoy. Cheers. Frank's MS Flight Sim https://www.youtube.com/@FranksMSFlightSimulator About Frank's MS Flight Sim New channel begun in 2021. 5. /images/notams/notams22/xpla1025.jpgOverview of X-Plane 12 ATC ChangesThe Air Traffic Control (ATC) system in X-Plane 12 has had a majorre-vamp compared to that of X-Plane 11. This article will highlightsome of the major changes and point out some of the more subtle onesto try and give you an idea of what to expect. General New Features6 distinct regions (Asia, Australia, Euro, India, USA and Global)Male and female selectable pilot voicesReception strength varies with distance from the transmitter, and intervening terrainAI now wait for controller instructions to be spoken before obeying themOne of the major changes, which may also be one of the leastnoticeable, is that there is now a system of global regions replacingthe previous single global control region which modelled US-specificrules and messages. Having separate geographic regions means thatdifferent parts of the world can use voices that sound locallyappropriate, but more importantly regions can have distinct messagesand standards. To go with the regional variation in accents, thesystem now supports more than one voice per region, giving morevariation as well as both male and female voices. Male/femaleselectable voices are available for the pilot too, in the Soundsettings page. The quality of the received audio now takes the distance from the controller, relative altitude, the type of controller, and any blocking terrain into account. In other words, if you’re close to an airport with clear line of sight, you’ll get nice, strong, clear reception. If you’re miles away and flying low behind a ridge, you’ll struggle to hear what the controller is saying. When AI receive instructions from a controller they will now wait until the transmission is complete, rather than executing those instructions the instant the transmission starts. This is one of many small changes which don’t really affect anything functionally, but hopefully add to the realism and feeling of immersion. More...
  6. /images/notams/notams22/proa0815.jpgPRO-ATC/SR Features PRO-ATC/SR just runs autonomously beside the Flight Simulation (MSFS, Prepar3D or FSX-SE). Top priority was focused on to not restrict the simulation in any way. Using PRO-ATC/SR, you'll not notice significant loss of frames per second. Partially 1 or 2 frames - if at all. The interface used is the FS standard interface "SimConnect". No additional programs or modules necessary. It is compatible to Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS 2020), Prepar3D and even to FSX-SE. Now you can communicate with ATC and your virtual co-pilot by speech via a standard headset mike'. SR uses ENGLISH ONLY. If you do not want to use SR then you can use keyboard and controller keys. Complete air traffic control by PRO-ATC/SR from the gate at departure airport to the gate at destination airport Worldwide navigation database containing all data for airports, VORs, NDBs, Intersections, departure- and arrival procedures (SIDs/STARs). The database can be actualized by Navdata-Pro or Navigraph AIRAC data. Additionally the installed scenery is taken into account thanks to Pete Dowsons MakeRwys. SIDs/STARs are assigned according to weather conditions. Other SIDs/STARs/Runways can be requested. AI is recognized and managed (on ground on holding position only). Convenient Flight-Planner Export and import of flightplans in different formats. Import of the last saved flightplan in SimBrief. Automatic route calculation incorporating lower and upper airways. Customizing a calculated route is still possible. Departure and arrival procedures. Many third party aircraft supported (listed on the right hand side). Extensive copilot support for autopilot, flaps, brakes, speed brakes, gear, lighting, nav-radio, com-radio... All this is optional, you may even turn off copilot support completely - not a really good idea. Please note that with the Fenix Airbus only the COM Radio is supported by the co-pilot for now. 12 checklists can be processed in teamwork with your copilot. New checklists can be defined. Customizing the existing ones is also possible. The default GPS flightplan for the simulation can be generated and loaded automatically The GPS flightplan for all supported third party aircraft can be generated automatically, but you have to load it via FMC. Not possible yet with the Fenix Airbus. But you may download the flightplan via SimBrief. Sound sets for pilot, copilot and controllers, specially recorded for PRO-ATC/SR. We have added some of the freeware sound files from MaveCreation to avoid checking for corrections on each launch. Therefore please do not overwrite the existing voice sets! Coordinates and frequency dependent background ATC. You hear country, radar sector and even airport specific ATC. It is even extendable. Holdings Missed Approach supported Moving map shows your aircraft and all important information on a map The 'new' In'Flight window shows all important information. It can be displayed anywhere on the main FlightSim screen or you can move the 'In-Flight' window to another screen or even to a networked PC(uses SimConnect). 7. /images/notams/notams22/twr0414.jpgMore advances about Tower! Simulator 3! This time we want to talk about model details. Tower! 3D users haveasked us for the option to bring the camera closer to the action. Thiswill be possible in our new simulator as it can easily handle 50,000polygons/plane, while Tower!3D's planes had around 3-5000polygons. While the previous version used a 512 texture sheet, now a 4Ktexture is used and we also use normal maps too, to add even moredetail to the planes. If you've seen our other projects, you've probably updated aboutour airport releases for MSFS and X-Plane recently. This is the detailyou can expect from the new Tower! 3 Simulator airports! The list of airports is not finalized yet, but we can confirm thatTIST and KRDU will be included in the game. Stay tuned for more news very soon... Source

  9. Instrument Approach Clearances with ATC Communications and Phraseology Learn about approach clearances and variations of ATC phraseology heard during the approach phase of an IFR flight. Cleared for the approach, Vectors to final, vectors across the final approach course, and full approaches with circle to land are some of the approach clearances and phraseology heard in this video covering instrument approach clearances. Air Traffic Control is simulated with the help of two active Air Traffic Controllers. If you are learning to fly and working on an instrument rating, a flight sim enthusiast using VATSIM or PilotEdge, or an already instrument rated pilot, this video has tips and examples of clearances and phraseology and procedures that are commonly used when operating under Instrument Flight Rules. 11. /images/notams/notams22/visk0113.jpgDear IVAO Family, For some time it has been the Network's wish to be able to provideyou with transparent and regular updates of our plans for, and theprogression, of IVAO's infrastructure and software/websystems. Following a restructure of the Development OperationsDepartment we were able to appoint new Directors and TeamManagers. Yannick and Frederico have assumed the positions of Directorand Assistant Director respectively. The main focus of their first twoweeks was to meet with the new Team Managers and finalise a roadmapfor our infrastructure and software/web systems, changing thelandscape in around 12 months. The aim is to provide you with updates every 3 months, on what toexpect to be released during that period and an update on what hashappened since the previous quarter. So, without further ado, heregoes… What is planned for Q1 of 2022?World ServersIt is no hidden fact that our current SHARD servers do not have thecapability to withstand a tremendous amount of connections toIVAO. December of last year saw a deficiency during the Crowded Skiesevent that meant we were unable to achieve the figures we hadwished. The reasoning behind this issue is that IVAO has no ownershipto develop the current source code of the SHARD servers. Our dedicatedDevelopers have now created our own servers, called ‘World Servers’,that will enable better stability, more connections and lay thefoundations to be able to implement more enhanced features in thefuture. The World Server will be cross compatible on release with thelatest versions of IvAc, IvAp, Altitude and Aurora but theintroduction of new features, later in the year, will see support forIvAc and IvAp versions closed at a later date. The project is underAlpha testing at the moment and is due for release, to all members, bythe end of March. Aurora for WindowsAurora was responsible for 85% of ATC connections in December 2021,being the most popular of the ATC clients compatible with IVAO. Wewill shortly be releasing our ALPHA version, currently used by IVAOStaff, as the latest available BETA to all members after which we willnot be implementing any new features to Aurora for Windows, insteadfocusing on stabilizing this latest BETA to remove any existing bugsand eradicate crashes. Anyone who does have an issue with Aurora forWindows should contact our friendly User Support Team by speakingone-on-one with them on the Family Discord, posting in the forum or byemailing devops@ivao.aero where a member of the team will gladlyassist. Aurora for Mac/LinuxIt goes without saying that Aurora for Linux and Mac has been acalling for some time now, we are pleased to advise that Aurora forMac/Linux is being actively developed to achieve the same key aspectsof Aurora for Windows. The project is under development and expectedfor a network BETA release by August. Voice ATISA new feature for IVAO, the Network will see the introduction ofVoice ATIS continue its development. Voice ATIS will enable Pilots tobe able to get the latest weather, runway and other ATIS informationfor their departure and arrival airports. Voice ATIS will only becompatible with IVAO’s latest offering of software, meaning it willonly be received by Pilots using Altitude and only transmitted byControllers who are using Aurora. The project is under development andexpected for a network release by June. What is left to come for the rest of 2022?IVAO has much more to offer to it’s Family in 2022. Deemed “theyear of change†by the Senior Leadership Team, we aim to see thedeparture of TeamSpeak 2 forever and the smooth landing of our newvoice systems including Voice UNICOM. We hope to provide you withfurther updates in April, July and October to discuss progression anddiscuss the next steps. Source

Clearances are requested from ClearanceDelivery, Ground, and (simulated) over the phone at a non-toweredairport where a clearance void time would be received. This video shows the basics of IFR clearances. Current and formerAir Traffic Controllers read five different IFR clearances ranging fromeasy to difficult. There are clearances that are cleared as filed, partial full route, full route, and clearances at non-towered airportswith a clearance void time. The goal of this video is to explain thebasic concepts of an IFR clearance, the differences between types ofclearances, and most of all, for instrument students to be able topractice writing IFR clearances read by Air Traffic Controllers. The same concepts apply to requesting, copying, and reading back anIFR clearance for those using live ATC services on Microsoft FlightSimulator such as VATSIM and PilotEdge. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel About The AuthorThis video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. 13. /images/notams/notams21/posc1218.jpgThe last technology blog post was published in May of 2020, andwhat a long journey it has been for our team since then! Thankfullythat long arduous development journey has come to an end and userswill be able to benefit from our hard work. I want to start off by answering some common questions and clearingmisconceptions. Is POSCON dead? Absolutely not! We are very much alive and well! We may not seem like a major player in the online flight simulationnetwork arena right now, but rest assured that our technology is farsuperior to that of our peers and we will be a significant force toreckon with in the near future. So, where have you been? The short answer is, we have been here all along. . . quietly developing. As a result of feedback from early beta testers, we took thedrastic step of essentially shutting down POSCON's forward progress inorder to rewrite the voice software. This decision was made when werealized that the voice software was not going to be able to sustainour projected growth using the protocol it was developed touse. Making a change to the protocol basically required a completerewrite, which I am pleased to report is now complete. The good news is that the rewrite only occupied one developer forpast last year. While he worked tirelessly to bring users a bettervoice experience, our other developers have been making significantfeature upgrades to their components. I am going to take some time tohighlight those major developments later in this post. Why haven't you posted development updates over the past year? To answer this question, we need to address two major issues in theflight simulation community: the hype train mentality and the copyingproblem. The hype train mentality. A very common tendency in the flightsimulation community is to over-hype a product. Some developers dothis on purpose by dropping little nuggets of information or photos onsocial media regarding a new and exciting product they are working onin order to build hype, then one of two things happens; either theproduct never gets released (it was vaporware all along) or theproduct is released, but does not live up to the hype. This communityloves to ride the hype train and it is not something that the POSCONteam thinks is a professional approach to software development andmarketing. We don't want to build up hype around a product thatdoesn't live up to expectations. We feel it is better to stay quietand develop rather than to make promises we cannot keep. The copying problem. No, I am not referring to the people who liketo pirate software (and yes, that is a problem too). What I amreferring to the issue of other developers/networks (you know who youare) taking our great ideas and benefiting from them. This issomething Robert Randazzo of PMDG actually brought up in his recentinterview with Jeff Turner over at Sky Blue Radio in regards to GlobalFlight Operations. I couldn't agree more. Competition is a greatthing, but competition means being innovative and developing newideas.Anyway, enough of my rant. . . but those are the main reasons weare careful not to provide too many details about what we are workingon now. Okay, so what are you willing to share? First, I think it is important to point out that all recent updatesto our software can be found in the changelogs which are located onthe POSCON HQ. I certainly have no intention of covering everythingthat has changed over the past last year, so I encourage all users tobrowse through the logs if you are interested in learning more. More...

What: ATC Comm Workshop for Newbies When: Starting Oct 31st, Sunday (repeating weekly), 9:00a PT / 12:00p ET / 1600 UTC Where: TeamSpeak3, connect to ts3.digitalthemepark.com Additional Info: http://www.digitalthemepark.com “mic frightâ€, “brain lockâ€, “tongue-tied†are all terms you have heard real or virtual pilots describe their first time/attempt using the aircraft’s comm radios. Many of us want to be perceived as being perfect in public. People who are normally very eloquent will freeze up when you put a microphone in front of their mouth. It’s tough to be natural in an unnatural situation, even for professionals. Okay…so that last paragraph wasn’t fair and we hope we didn’t scare you away from this post. If you want to …ease… into using comms, why not give this workshop a go! What if there was a place to learn in a relaxed atmosphere? DigitalThemePark has traditionally been an initial stepping stone for many on the path to PilotEdge and VATSIM (Excellent services and highly recommended!), especially during our weekly Discover and Achievement flights. We have put together a series of workshops that keep it fun, entertaining, and a bit of learning too. Our methods are to help you Understand, Interpret, and Learn. Below are a few of the topics we will cover in the upcoming weeks: We want to first work on overcoming “mic fright†that all of us get. Learn the aviation communication language and the importance of brevity. Learn and understand the 5 W’s: Who you are talking to?, Who you are?, Where you are?, What do you want to do?, Who you are talking to? Learn and practice the basic traffic pattern (Non-controlled airports, Controlled airports, Practicing in busy traffic) Learn airspace transitioning and the associated interactions Being comfortable with all of the above and most of all having a good time! Heck let’s start with the basics in three easy steps and learn something right now! The initial contact “You make a request to air traffic control†The instructions “They give you specific instructions to follow†The readback “You repeat these instructions to confirm that you understood them correctly†Simple right? Note: We suggest getting connected before the event in order to make sure your headset fully works, and familiar with TeamSpeak. Download TeamSpeak at http://www.teamspeak.com, connect to ts3.digitalthemepark.com, and message Zoolander64 or one of the other [sTAFF] members as we stay connected 24/7 and usually flying or not far away from our computer. ### DigitalThemePark is a multi-gaming community of 24,900+ virtual citizens. 17. Hello again, guys! So recently I ran into an issue regarding the basic FSX ATC. Here are the details: Today I made a short flight from Alesund (Norway) to Oslo Gardermoen to test a new repaint I made. I wanted a specific approach in Oslo, so I set the wind in a way ATC would allow me to land at RWY 19R. The wind I set was 8 kts from 200 degrees or something like that. I made the flight plan with the basic FSX flight planner and got into flying. At the end of my flight, the ATC cleared me to a RWY 01L approach (the opposite of RWY 19R). So I had to make a landing with an 8 knot tailwind, which is far from realistic... I ran into the same bug a few days ago at Luxembourg, so its not airport related. Now this wouldn't really be an issue at other airports, but for example at Kai Tak (which I frequently fly into), I like to take RWY 13 approach. If the ATC continues to ignore winds, those landings will be impossible as the wind is normally set to RWY 31 approaches. I also noticed that, no matter how fast wind speeds are, the ATIS always says: "Wind calm". Not sure if that's related though. I'm sure it doesn't matter, but the aircraft I used was the TDS Boeing 737-800. I don't use any weather engines or ATC add-ons, things like that I like to keep default. Ideas, anyone? Thanks in advance!
  18. Tutorial: Holds And ATC Communications By thecorporatepilotdad Holding patterns and hold entries are illustrated and demonstrated using Microsoft Flight Simulator by a professional pilot with over 8000 hours of flight time. Realistic ATC communications are used with the help of a former Air Traffic Controller - And a moving map so you can see what the airplane is doing from the top down view. Standard and non-standard holds are discussed as well as each entry type which includes: direct entry, teardrop entry, and parallel entry. An actual hold is flown after entries are demonstrated and a DME hold is flown as well. A hold in lieu of a procedure turn is also covered.A demonstration of how to set up an FMS hold is given as well. We also demonstrate holding instructions given by ATC along with the readback and setup of the hold. References and resources for holding are given near the end of the video. They include: Instrument Flying Handbook, Airmen Information Manual (AIM), 7110.65 (ATC's version of the AIM), and a holding pattern calculator. Once hitting the fix, the 5 T's are used. Turn, Time, Twist, Throttle, Talk. The order of turn and time are interchangeable, which is acceptable either way. I use the mindset of fly the airplane first. Get the airplane going the way it needs to go, then worry about pushing a button on a timer. A question and answer session at the end of the video with an Air Traffic Controller covers questions about holds from the ATC perspective. Regulations are covered which include speed limitations and reporting requirements. Navigraph charts are used in this demonstration. thecorporatepilotdad Youtube channel Navigraph About The Author This video is produced by thecorporatepilotdad. 20. PF3 ATCPublisher: OnCourse SoftwareReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $49.00/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngIt is a known fact that default ATC onmost common flight simulators is not always that good. They missseveral features of flight such as SIDS and STARS and in some casescan send you into ground locations where aircraft are not quitecompatible. OnCourse Software has recently released PF3, the latest edition oftheir long-running ATC software, compatible with FS2004, FSX, P3D and theall-new Microsoft Flight Simulator. It aims to improve the trafficcontrol experience for flight simmers with a new system built from theground up to walk you through each stage of your flight. In this review, we will take a look at the all-new add-on and seehow it works alongside Microsoft Flight Simulator, as well as todetermine if it is worth picking up for your flights. /images/reviews/pf3atc/t/PF3-ATC-sidstar.jpgWhat Is PF3?OnCourse Software's PF3 is an Air Traffic Control client for anyflight simulator that uses the FSUIPC client. It provides you with anall-new advanced set of flight instructions that allow you to simulatefar more realistic ATC without the need for flying on any of theonline networks, such as IVAO or VATSIM. It also allows you to walkthrough every aspect of your flight, including your flight plan, chosen SID and STAR, as well as any deviations or holds you might berequired to make. It also manages your flight around AI aircraft that are also withinthe simulator. While it may not be able to guide them, it can guideyou around their paths, avoiding any chance of collision or deviationin the case of a busy airport operation. /images/reviews/pf3atc/t/PF3-ATC-connectionestablished.jpgPF3's interface is simplistic and gives you what you need to startand plan your flight. The UI is clear and simple to understand, whilethe in-sim frequencies and captions box adds a nice little extra foryou to quickly glance at. When connected to the simulator, the wingnavigation lights on the logo will also start to flash as an indicatorthat navigation is running - a nice little extra detail! Taxi Guidance is also a nice extra feature that lets you followpaths to and from the runway with audio cues from the co-pilot. Theywill guide you left and right, naming any taxiways and stand numbersthat you are passing. The PF3 database comes with thousands of voices with differentaccents that cover almost the entire world. No matter where you fly,you will hear the voices of controllers that would not go amiss inyour departure and arrival areas. This also includes the voice of yourco-pilot, which can be set with a choice of 119 offerings. Voices canalso be shared among regions, for example, the US and Canada or theIrish and British to increase the amount of variety you will hear onthe ground and in the air. Bored of that robotic Microsoft Sam voice? You no longer need to hear it! /images/reviews/pf3atc/t/PF3-ATC-hotkeysmenu.jpgControl of PF3 is also simple and again comes with a lot ofvariety. You manage your communications by a series of hotkeys. Theseare linked to your responses and allow you to easily chat with thetower based on your requirement. While it does take some learning toremember what each key does, once you know the pattern, it's just acase of pressing a number and listening to the program do all of thework. Don't feel like communicating? Get the co-pilot to do it all foryou! PF3 also has two automated ATC methods that let the softwarecommunicate and respond on your behalf, as well as change frequenciesand autopilot systems. /images/reviews/pf3atc/t/PF3-ATC-optionsbox.jpgIt also features some VFR options too, giving you flight followingand guidance on request if you feel like flying something low and slowand enjoy the scenery that Microsoft Flight Simulator has tooffer. Download And InstallInstallation of PF3 comes in three parts, the PF3 client itself,FSUIPC and MakeRwys. Purchasing PF3 from the FlightSim.Com Store gives you an activationkey and the software installer. You do not need to install this intothe simulator directly, but instead into your main Program Filesfolder. Run the installer, activate the add-on and the rest of theinstallation is automated. Once installed, you now need to ensure that you have Pete & JohnDowson's FSUIPC for your chosen platform installed. This is how PF3talks to the simulator and forms a bridge between the flight and anythird-party add-ons that you may have. Install this and in the case ofMicrosoft Flight Simulator, make sure you have the exe fileloaded. Finally, you now want to create the runways database for PF3 toread. This can be done with the free MakeRwys tool, also published byPete & John Dowson. Ensure that your simulator is closed before youstart the tool and once open, wait around 10 minutes for it tocomplete. You will then have several files generated, of which therunways.csv file is what you're looking for. Open PF3, select 'Options#1', click on 'Rebuild PF3 Database' and follow the steps to selectthe file. You will then see it process this data and store it withinPF3 itself. If you do ever find yourself stuck with this, you can always referto the very detailed 193-page PDF document that has been supplied withthe software. This explains every little bit of detail about PF3,including the setup requirements, use of the tool, as well as how toresolve any unlikely issues you may come across. Flight With PF3To test PF3, I did a flight from Moscow Sheremetyevo to LondonHeathrow in the Airbus A320neo on Microsoft Flight Simulator. Thisgave it a good lengthy flight to test with the ATC, while also beingable to fly between two destinations with heavy traffic density. /images/reviews/pf3atc/t/PF3-ATC-flightplannermenu.jpgImmediately from the get-go, the automated co-pilot got to work incommunicating my flight plan and clearance to ATC, as well as a fullATIS readout from Moscow. While I set the aircraft up, it continued totalk to the controller, right up until it knew I was ready fortaxi. It requested the routing from tower and proceeded to tell mewhere to go, making a left onto Alpha and to cross Runway 24L. As weapproached the runway intersect, it proceeded to pass the frequencyover to the tower and request the takeoff from there. This entireprocess was automatic, I did not have to input any frequencies, PF3already knows how to do this! Takeoff clearance was straightforward with the tower giving me windand pressure before giving me the all-clear for takeoff. On beingairborne we were cleared to a flight level of 160 and given a seriesof vectors that sent us towards our flight path. The flight went onwithout issue, and then later we were stepped up to our cruisingflight level of 400 and left to fly on our own navigation. As we approached the English Channel, we were given our firstdescent altitude as well as the BNN1E STAR for Runway 27R atHeathrow. The PF3 approach controller helped to navigate our aircraftto the runway with altitude changes and speed restrictions, beforehanding us over to Heathrow tower for landing. The touchdown wassmooth, we rolled off the runway and ATC handed us over to ground. Asit did on taxi to takeoff, the co-pilot guided me to Terminal 5 atHeathrow before sending me to an assigned gate that was given by thecontroller. Anything I Would Change? While there is a lot that PF3 does right, one thing I did noticewas that the voice audio does not always sound very natural, especially when reading numbers. All the voices are recordednaturally, similar to how the FSX and FS2004 ATC voices were done, butthe tone of these audio samples does sometimes jump when listening toinstructions and is something you do notice. At some stage, I wouldcertainly like to see an update which makes the voices sound morenatural. Yes, it is a definite improvement over the default voices weare used to hearing, but in my opinion, it just needs that littleextra work to make it as smooth as possible. I would also love to see a voice-activation feature in the futuretoo! Tools like Voice Attack and PushbackZoomer already use thesecapabilities in which to pick out keywords and respond as required, and something similar for PF3 would be great! Something that onlineATC networks allow for, is the ability to let you talk to control andhave them respond to you directly. While there is no human aspect toPF3, there is certainly an AI aspect that knows your stage of flightwith FSUIPC, so being able to listen to what you say and respond asrequired, would in my opinion create the ultimate ATC experience. Opinion And Closing RemarksI really do like PF3 and what it brings to Flight Simulator. Whencompared to default ATC offerings, then the difference is night andday, as PF3 is by far the superior option. It gives you a lot ofcontrol over your flight, as well as a controller who can and willsupport you with every aspect of your journey, from climb and descent,to holds, route deviations and changes. The automated co-pilot controls also make for a highly realisticflying experience, with voices that you would expect to hear, whichhas the advantage of allowing you to focus more on the managed flightof your aircraft. When combined with charts and other flight aids that exist forFlight Simulator, you can get a feel for your flight and see youroverall experience improve as your level of realism increases. The learning curve is also not too bad, as both hotkeys and flightplanning can be learned rather quickly with only a few flights. Likewith the simulator's default options, you know the 'pattern' of whatnumber to press and when to press it, and the same can be appliedhere, but with much more advanced options. If you are looking for realistic Air Traffic Control and want anall-in-one solution (without the need to fly online), then you won'tfind a better option than OnCourse Software's PF3.
