  1. Good evening, I recently decided to go ahead and get the SSTSIM Concorde addon as I was looking to challenge myself with something other than the average Boeing or Airbus. However, even after setting up my aircraft for flight correctly, there is one problem which I have consistently faced with this addon. That is this natural tendency for the jet to bank itself to right regardless of fuel management or trim settings. In short, as soon as I let go of the controls and let the airplane go into its natural resting spot in flight, the resting position it finds is one which has about a 5'ish degree right wing down angle to it. Other than that, the aircraft flies and behaves as if nothing is wrong. Only requiring me to to constantly input opposite aileron, (left aileron in this case), to keep the wings level in flight. Akin to what you would be doing in a single engine prop plane. If anyone has encountered this phenomenon or knows how to fix this, or if this is just how Concorde flies, please let me know as I am truly enjoying the challenge that of which the Concorde provides. Besides textures, the aircraft is not at all short on animatedcomponents. Through the FMC, I was able to open every door on the 747,including the second level emergency exits. Additionally, smallerdetails have also been modelled, such as the air intake for theAPU. Control surfaces also move according to the number of hydraulicpumps that are currently operational. When pumps are turned off, youcan observe that control surfaces deflect less and some even stopmoving at all! These features really show the dedication of iFly tothis add-on as they could have easily glossed over these details, yetthey chose to include then in this add-on. Additionally, the team at iFly has chosen to include a fullyfunctioning set of 2D panels, a useful component for those who eitherstill wish to fly with these panels or prefer to use them to accessswitches. From the Boeing 747 Operators' Manual the hydraulic systems loadis as follows: "Systems 1 and 4 power the trailing edge flaps, landing gear,normal brakes (SYS 4), alternate brakes (SYS 1), and steering. Systems1 and 4 also provide redundant power to the primary flightcontrols. Systems 2 and 3 power the primary flight controls,stabilizer trim, and elevator feel. System 2 also powers the alternatebrakes and lower yaw damper. System 3 powers the upper yawdamper. Systems 1, 2, and 3 power the related center, right, and leftautopilot servos. Systems 2, 3, and 4 power the spoilers." Flight DynamicsIn order to better understand how the aircraft works and handles, Ifollowed along on the tutorial flight, a step by step guide for aflight from London Heathrow to San Francisco International Airport,with the flight time at just over 10 hours without time acceleration. /images/reviews/ifly747/t/ifly747-6-colddark-03.jpgOur tutorial first takes us not to the simulator, but to theaircraft configurator where we must set the payload and fuel for theflight. As per the instructions, we took aboard 382 passengers andjust over 20 tons of cargo. A minor complaint I have regarding thisprocess would be that there is no option to simply input a passengernumber. To get 382 passengers, I found myself selecting the full 416passengers and clicking away till the number of passengers dwindleddown to 382. Perhaps there's a better solution to this, but I haven'tdiscovered that from poking around the configurator. The fuel loading was especially interesting. Whilst you are able toinput the desired quantities of fuel into each tank yourself, the 747has a somewhat complex fuel management system, where fuel must bedelicately managed to feed the main tanks to ensure that the aircraftis balanced throughout the flight. For this, the iFly 747 configuratorautomatically spreads the fuel load correctly amongst the tanks as periFly's programmed "fuel logic". After loading the passengers and fuel, iFly guides the user throughseveral pages of settings, which should be set correctly for thesystems to function properly. Amongst other customizations, a keypoint to note when prepping the aircraft is to ensure that metricunits are used in the simulator. This is to ensure that the FMChandles weights correctly when performing our preflight later on. Through myown experiences, I am extremely thankful to iFly for including atutorial flight to make things so much easier. After powering up the aircraft, I was ready to taxi. Taxiing theaircraft really gave me a feel for just how heavy an aircraft I'mflying, certainly a departure from the commuter propliners I've beenreviewing lately. Aftertakeoff, I engaged the VNAV and LNAV modes and allowed the aircraft totake over flying itself to San Francisco. At this point, the tutorial goes much more in-dept regarding usingthe autopilot, including various VNAV profiles. Cruise in a 747 is rather uneventful, with little to do other thanfuel management and planning ahead for climbs or descents. As per themanual though, the iFly 747 is designed for use with time accelerationof up to 8x, most certainly a welcome feature when flying offline. After a lengthy cruise, I came back to find the simulator paused ashort distance from the Top of Descent point. Lining up for the runway, the aircraft was much slower to respondto my control inputs. This add-on really gives the feeling of flying aheavy aircraft and requires that you constantly plan ahead in order toperform pitch and bank adjustments early to stay ahead of theaircraft. Should you choose to hand fly the approach, do note thatconstant input is required to keep the aircraft on the glideslopeunlike default aircraft, which are generally more stable to fly. On landing, I planted the aircraft somewhat firmly onto the runway,and activated the reversers. As per the instructions, we took aboard 382 passengers andjust over 20 tons of cargo. A minor complaint I have regarding thisprocess would be that there is no option to simply input a passengernumber. To get 382 passengers, I found myself selecting the full 416passengers and clicking away till the number of passengers dwindleddown to 382. Perhaps there's a better solution to this, but I haven'tdiscovered that from poking around the configurator. The fuel loading was especially interesting. Whilst you are able toinput the desired quantities of fuel into each tank yourself, the 747has a somewhat complex fuel management system, where fuel must bedelicately managed to feed the main tanks to ensure that the aircraftis balanced throughout the flight. For this, the iFly 747 configuratorautomatically spreads the fuel load correctly amongst the tanks as periFly's programmed "fuel logic". After loading the passengers and fuel, iFly guides the user throughseveral pages of settings, which should be set correctly for thesystems to function properly. Amongst other customizations, a keypoint to note when prepping the aircraft is to ensure that metricunits are used in the simulator. This is to ensure that the FMChandles weights correctly when performing our preflight later on. At this point, the tutorial goes much more in-dept regarding usingthe autopilot, including various VNAV profiles. Cruise in a 747 is rather uneventful, with little to do other thanfuel management and planning ahead for climbs or descents. As per themanual though, the iFly 747 is designed for use with time accelerationof up to 8x, most certainly a welcome feature when flying offline. After a lengthy cruise, I came back to find the simulator paused ashort distance from the Top of Descent point. This add-on really gives the feeling of flying aheavy aircraft and requires that you constantly plan ahead in order toperform pitch and bank adjustments early to stay ahead of theaircraft. Should you choose to hand fly the approach, do note thatconstant input is required to keep the aircraft on the glideslopeunlike default aircraft, which are generally more stable to fly. On landing, I planted the aircraft somewhat firmly onto the runway,and activated the reversers. Performance of JSS Simulations' Transall C-160If JSS Simulations says anything about its flight performance, I didn't find it on its product page, manual, or website. The developer gave so much attention to the realism of the aircraft's systems that I trust it programmed realistic flight dynamics as well. My performance report is based on my personal observations of what happened while I flight tested this aircraft. I used Toulouse-Blagnac Airport (LFBO) in Toulouse, France, because that is where final assembly took place. (Components were built at several locations by companies in France and Germany.) Weight and Balance: Beginning gross weight of JSS Simulations' Transall C-160 is 93,322 pounds (42,330 kilograms), which is 83 percent of its 112,435-pound (51,000-kilogram) maximum gross weight. This consists of 900 pounds (408 kilograms) of payload and 28,488 pounds (12,922 kilograms) of fuel. Payload is five crew each 180 pounds (82 kilograms). Fuel is four full tanks holding 4,252 gallons (16,094 liters). Startup: Two start methods are available. The default it a realistic multi-step procedure involving several tasks that must be done in the prescribed order. A quick start method is also available. They are described in the JSS Simulations' manual and a video on the JSS Simulations YouTube channel. Engine 1 (left) starts first, then Engine 2. Any time I changed liveries or reset the flight, the engines stopped and required a new startup procedure. Taxiing: This aircraft taxied easily with steering and differential wheel brakes. When to use which is not specified. Presumably more flaps would be needed for heavier loads or shorter runways and less for lighter or longer. The default aircraft weighs 83 percent of maximum, and I wanted to see the effect, so I used 20 percent flaps. On this aircraft, it is second of six positions on the control lever. It rotated at 100 knots and lifted off at 105 knots. It used about one-third of Blagnac's 11,481-foot runway 32L, which would be about 3,828 feet (1,168 meters). Climbing: The aircraft climbed at about 750 feet (229 meters) per minute and 120 knots. It increased to 1,000 feet (305 meters ) per minute and accelerated to 130 knots after I retracted the landing gear and reduced flaps to 10 degrees. It accelerated to 180 knots after I pulled the flaps up to zero and maintained a 1,000-feet per minute climb rate. I experimented with various climb rates and airspeeds and found that it would climb smoothly at 2,000 feet (610 meters) per minute while maintaining a respectable airspeed. /images/reviews/transall/t/62TransallC160Flight1JSSSimulations.jpg/images/reviews/transall/t/63TransallC160Flight1JSSSimulations.jpgCruising: The aircraft settled in at steady altitudes with a little trim adjustment. It naturally wanted to climb again as it gained airspeed after leveling off, and more adjustment was needed. Nothing was out of the ordinary. The aircraft banked left and right with less yoke than I expected. It held a 30-degree bank easily, but constant attention to airspeed and vertical speed was needed. Around 6,000 feet (1,830 meters) altitude, alarms sounded and the master alarm light above the attitude indicator illuminated. The attenuator lights showed Engine 1 and 2 de-icing. The manual speaks of alarms sounding when outside air temperature falls below -5 Celsius, but it doesn't say what to do about the problem. I clicked every switch I could find on the de-icing panel, but the alarms never stopped. The audible alarm continued after I returned to lower altitudes and even after I turned off the simulator sound. In response to my question (which came less than an hour later), Janus Swanepoel gave me a multi-step procedure to follow before taking off, which I interpret as another example of this aircraft's depth of realism. He also said the alarms continued sounding because they use an external sound gauge unrelated to the simulator's normal sound system. That would probably be the special sound program that's required when the aircraft is loaded. Approaching: The aircraft approached smoothly at 120 knots then 110 with flaps deflected 20 degrees. Following the glide slope to the runway manually was easy with normal attention to airspeed, pitch, and vertical speed. Landing: The aircraft crossed the threshold at 105 knots. I pulled the throttles back fully, and the aircraft settled onto the runway at 100 knots. Stated stall speed is 95 knots. It decelerated quickly with reverse thrusters and stopped with wheel brakes applied after it had slowed to 60 knots. Autopilot: The autopilot is typical. It holds altitude, heading, navaids, and approaches. It will guide the aircraft to a pilot-specified altitude at a pilot-specified climb rate. It's not exactly like those in default FSX aircraft, but it's a lot like several I have encountered in add-on aircraft that are presumably more true to the real devices. Stalls: Stall speed is specified as 95 knots with flaps down. It doesn't say how far down the flaps would be, however. Of course stall speed varies with conditions such as weight and flaps, and this aircraft has a widely variable weight capacity and flap positions. I tested stalls in two common conditions: 1) During initial climbout with full weight, flaps 20 degrees, and full take-off power, I pulled the nose up sharply to force a steep climb. The aircraft stalled at 95 knots. 2) During a normal landing approach under low power and 20-degree flaps, I pulled the nose up to simulate an unwise attempt to regain a glide slope. The aircraft stalled at 95 knots. Recovery was easy in the steep climb by reducing pitch and doable in the faulty approach by increasing power. The approach recovery wasn't as forgiving because of turbo-engine spooling, and I nearly sank into the trees short of the runway. Overall: The Transall C-160 by JSS Simulations is a little more challenging to fly than the much lighter twin-turboprop Beechcraft King Air but easier than the Douglas DC-3. The default multi-step startup procedure must be followed exactly as prescribed in the manual. The optional quick-start method requires a few more steps than the usual FSX quick start, but it works. Animations and EffectsThe developer touts numerous animations including main and cargo doors, left and right jump doors, escape exit, cargo ramp, crew windows, nose cone, chocks, and pilot yokes. An Animation Manager enables users to chose whether to display and use these animations. The manual says its weather system can be used with any third-party weather engine, freeware weather engine, or the built-in weather of the flight simulator. This weather system must be purchased separately. A glass instrument in the main panel remains dark otherwise. I did not test this feature, but other reviewers have rated it highly. Technical Matters System Requirements. Requirements specified by JSS Simulations in its product description are typical: Windows XP and up and a modern computer. If it runs FSX normally, it's probably adequate for this aircraft. Compatible Simulators. This aircraft is compatible with FSX SP2 or Acceleration, FSX Steam Edition, and all versions of Prepar3D. Downloading. The 334-megabyte archive file downloaded quickly at cable-internet speed. Installation. All aircraft and supporting files were installed in a few minutes with JSS Simulation's easy-to-use program. Users choose their simulator, and the program installs accordingly. Disk Space. The product occupies 1.3 gigabytes of hard disk space on my computer as follows: 334 megabytes for the downloaded archive file, 922 megabytes for the aircraft and its supporting files, and 2.5 megabytes for the manual. Special Programs. Acceptance of one special gauge program is required when the aircraft is chosen for its custom sounds to be heard correctly. Special Settings. The developer recommends higher display and realism settings than default "to get the most out of the aircraft and its performance." Aircraft Selection. The aircraft and its four liveries appear correctly in the FSX aircraft menu under "JSS" for manufacturer, "JSS Simulations" for publisher and "Multi-Engine TurboProp" for aircraft type. (The manufacturer should be Transall.) Uninstall. An uninstall program is deposited in the FSX root folder. The product can also be uninstalled through the Windows Add/Remove function. Screen Captures. All screen captures are by me unless stated otherwise. I used the developer's recommended display settings and anisotropic and anti-aliasing options for the best screen-shot imagery. Technical Support. JSS Simulations offers forums and direct email for technical support. Go to the product-description page, then click on the "Manufacturer Tech Support" link in the right column. I received courteous and thorough replies within a few hours. Questions not answered in this review should be directed to the developer. (I reviewed the product; I didn't make it.) Paratroop jumps at steady altitudes between 500 and 3,000 feet (153 and 915 meters) above ground level would be realistic. Pre-Stall & High Speed Buffeting SimulationPre-stall buffeting can act as a warning that the aircraft isapproaching a stall and give the pilot time to take corrective action;and in fact, most aircraft are designed to have gradual stallcharacteristics and buffeting that will warn the pilot and providetime to react. Like pre-stall buffets, high speed buffets are caused by flowseparation from the wings. However, in this case, the flow separationis caused by shockwaves resulting from supersonic airflow over thewing. At high airspeeds, airflow over the wing can become supersonicwell before the aircraft itself does. The airspeed where airflow overthe wing becomes supersonic depends on the shape of the wing, it'sthickness and sweep.
