  1. /images/notams/notams22/dino0916.jpgTime for a quick update on all the Microsoft Flight Simulatorprojects we are actively working on in these days - well, at least theones we can talk about - just a few lines for each project,but... it is a lot of stuff! M-346 Master ReleaseOur latest internal build seems to be satisfactory in terms ofquality and we believe it is ready for release. However, given anumber of problems that Sim Updates created in the past, we havedecided to postpone its release until SU10 is officially released andthe plane has been fully tested in the release build. We believe therelease date will be around September 25th-28th. Sim Update 10 - Fleet UpdateWe will take the chance of SU10 release to update ALL of ouraircrafts. They all seem to work with no (or very minor) issues withSU10, but we'll take the chance to release some minor tweaks to all ofthem. ALL means ALL: Long-EZ, SU-31, MB-339, T-45C and F-35 (althoughthe latest build of the F-35 and the T-45 are already fully compatiblewith SU10). Eurofighter TyphoonMany have been asking us if we are discontinuing our EurofighterTyphoon project after the surprise announcement of a competingproduct. Answer is NO. Competing models are very bad for revenues, and very good forcustomers - and we try and take the customer's perspective. We willNEVER comment or criticize any competitor for any reason. The onlything we want to do is to do a really good job on the Typhoon (as wewant to do with any of our products). We do no like making claims of authenticity, realism ordetail... as we think it is marketing BS. But rest assured we will tryour best to do a good job: if the project will sell well fine - but inthe end our focus is quality. Speaking about quality, as we are definitely NOT HAPPY with thequality of the commercial meshes, which have blatant mistakes inseveral areas, so we have decided to take the hard path and make acompletely new 3D model - this will take time, and it is highlyunlikely that the product will be ready for before 2023. But as usual"IT IS DONE WHEN IT IS DONE". Screenshot is a render of the WIPmesh. TornadoBasically the same story of the Typhoon. Yes, another company hasannounced a competing product, and NO we are NOT stopping ourproject. And much like the Typhoon, we were not happy with the 3D model wehave shown in the previous screenshots, so we are reworking it andadding a lot of details. Screenshot is a render of the WIP mesh. And yes, "it is done when it is done" (that could well be ourcompany motto)! A-4/TA-4 SkyhawkGuess what? We are not happy with them either. Yes, we could havedone a lazy port of our P3D models... and grab some cash, but we donot like working in that way. So, we are completely reworking manyparts of the model, and we will be redoing all the textures fromscratch. Also, we will redo all the cockpits from scratch andretexture them completely. F-14 TomcatYou may have noticed that we dropped the "D". VERY BIG news coming- hopefully we will be able to show something soon. And That Is Not All Folks......and well, that is not all. We are also working on other projectswhich include historical Italian aircrafts: the MB-326, but there arealso other projects that we cannot discuss at the moment (forcontractual reasons). For all of these projects, we do not have firm release dates, butone firm commitment: we will never rush a product, or release it ifwe are not convinced it is a good product. Also, products will be primarily developed on PC - but we will tryand deliver XBox versions too, with minimal compromises and only ifstrictly necessary. As usual... THANK YOU for your support to our projects! This hasbeen a very successful year for IndiaFoxtEcho, and this will allow usto invest more money and resources in these new products! Source
  2. /images/notams/notams22/ift0906.jpgWe are very pleased to announce that in the past few days we havecompleted a build of the DCS MB-339 which we believe it is good forrelease: we are submitting it to Eagle Dynamics for final testing. The testing and release process will take some time, so do notexpect the module to be available in the next few days - but restassured we'll keep you posted on the release date. As a teaser, and a final recap of the features of the package, hereis the full product manual (no less than 272 pages!): we are veryproud of the level of detail and realism of the package and we hopethat the manual will help you appreciate it! 5. /images/notams/notams22/ift0811.jpgWith apologies for the long delay, here are some news on our M-346MASTER project for Microsoft Flight Simulator. We have completed the Beta 1 stage logging no less than 116 ChangeRequests, and we are working towards a new Beta release (currenly wehave addressed approximately 30% of the issues). It shall be noted that we had M-346 pilots, instructors andengineers in the Beta test team and most of the CR's are actuallyminor details you would probably expect from a professional simulator, rather than from a recreational one... we will try to implementwhatever makes sense for MSFS. Here are the FAQs for the M-346: Do You Have A Release Date?We expect a Beta 2 build to be ready in a couple of weeks...and weexpect it to be close to the quality level we'd like for therelease. However, given that SU10 is around the corner, it makes nosense for us to release it before the sim update is deployed... so notsooner than the end of August. What Will Be The Level Of Fidelity? We have quite positive feeback from aircrews and we are trying toadd as much detail as practical. We do not like talking too much aboutrealism "levels", but we expect the user to be able to follow at least95% of the real-world check list - although some systems will not besimulated in detail. Will It Be Availabe On Xbox Too?We believe our current build is NOT compatible with the XBox,mostly due to the complex avionics and no less than 2 sets of 8Ktextures for the external model. So we expect that the M-346 WILL NOT be available on XBox atlaunch, but we will try to bring it to the consoles much like we didfor the F-35. What Liveries Will Be Included? We have currently 10 liveries, but we may add more before release: Italian Air ForceItalian Air Force special colorSingapore Air ForceSingapore Air Force special colorPolish Air ForceIsraeli Air ForceTurkmen Air ForceFactory PrimerFactory FA camoInternational Flight SchoolSource

  7. /images/notams/notams22/ift0809.jpgFirst, we'd like to apologize for the lack of updates on thisproject: rest assured we have been working tirelessly to deliver anextremely accurate rendition of this aircraft. In these days we are completing a build which we will submit toEagle Dynamics as a release candidate. Contrary to other companies, our strategy on this aircraft, beingour commercial debut on DCS, is to deliver a module which is ascomplete as possible...and we think we are at a very good point. At the moment we think that the MB.339 will be fully featured atlaunch with two exceptions: Flight Director will not be functionalMulticrew will have the standard basic implementation (full state synchronization will come at a later date)Apart from these two features, the aircraft will be fullyfunctional and all the aircraft systems will be simulated in detailand very close to the flight manual. Release date will be announced by ED pending their testing andapproval, but we are confident it will not be too far away in thefuture. Source

I think that, at this point, we can rule out the video memorylimitations - as the latest F-35 build has a video memory footprintwhich is much smaller than all of our other aircraft. 11. /images/notams/notams22/indi0515.jpgJust a quick update to let you know that, while we have beenworking very hard in the past few weeks on this update, we still havenot achieved all the goals we had set for this iteration. The most important point is a complete rewrite of the flight model, which will implement native MSFS Fly-By-Wire functions, including aproper G-limiter, stall protection and high AoA maneuverability. Unfortunately, the FBW functions of MSFS are poorly documented, andthe typical aircraft response is a little slow for a jet fighter. We are getting very promising results but we are not there yet, soit is unlikely that the update will be released during the weekend aswe planned. XBOX - the information above is for PC only. Once we have completedthe PC build, we will create an XBox specific version and submit itfor Microsoft approval. To reply to some of the comments we havereceived, IT WILL NOT BE A "DUMBED DOWN" VERSION. We plan to achieve a substantial reduction in video memoryfootprint by reducing the resolution of some of the textures andremoving unused geometry (like weapon models etc. - which arecompletely useless on the XBox). 12. /images/notams/notams22/dino0510.jpgAbove is an awfully bad photo of an XBox Serie-S we have purchasedspecifically for XBox testing: with thanks to Microsoft we have beengranted access on XBox to our products prior to the Marketplacerelease and during their test phase (previously we had to rely on theirfeedback and reports). This will ensure better communication betweenus and the Microsoft test team and hopefully a better support for theXBox in future. UNFORTUNATELY THE XBOX VERSION DOES NOT HAVE ANY DEBUG TOOL ORDEVELOPER MODE, so it is still VERY HARD to debug a product... but itis a step in the right direction. Speaking about the XBox Series S specifically, and coming from thePC-simmer Master Race, we are still amazed by the value that thisconsole can provide. While the experience on an (expensive) PC is clearly superior, theXBox series S runs Microsoft Flight Simulator at an acceptable framerate and with a pretty good image quality. And then, it is 299€ for the console, 59€ for a decent flight stick(like the T.16000 - YOU REALLY NEED ONE IF YOU ARE PLAYING WITH THEJOYPAD!!!!) and 69€ (unless you do not have the XBox game pass) forthe base version of Flight Simulator. It is 429€ to play Flight Simulator on a console. Even with allthe faults and problems of the base version, and even without anyadd-on, it is still great value for money. Let alone the fact that it is an unique experience on a console. On the bad side, we have experienced a couple of "infinite loadingscreen" occurrencies and the refresh rate of the digital instrumentsis much lower than on PC. Back to our testing, and to our plans for XBox, this is the currentsituation of our products: MB-339 -> WORKS FINE as far as we can tell LONG-EZ -> WORKS FINE as far as we can tell T-45C GOSHAWK -> LONG LOADING TIMES (and slow HUD refreshrate...but that is the sim). Apart from these issues, the T-45 seemsto work quite well on our XBox Series S. We know that some users arestill having problems with it and we are working on a new version witha smaller memory footprint. F-35 LIGHTNING II -> CRASHES THE SIM UPON LOADING. As discussed wewill create a new X-Box specific build once 1.0.6 for PC isreleased. The latest news we have is that, apart from the video memoryburden, there may be problems with XML code too. SU-31 -> WORKS FINE as far as we can tell... BUT it has beenrejected by Microsoft for anomalies in the canopy reflections on XBox(seriously). We cannot reproduce the problem and will push for arelease. Source
  13. /images/notams/notams22/dino0503.jpgNew Product Announcement And Development UpdatesWell, it took just a few seconds to our fans to tell that the imagewe posted on April 25th was teasing the development of a Tornado! The nozzle shape of the RB199 is indeed unmistakeable... so YES, WEARE DOING A TORNADO FOR MICROSOFT FLIGHT SIMULATOR and here are some(very) preliminary screenshots. We plan to significantly improve theappearance, and give it a realistic flight model and a reasonablyaccurate systems simulations. We have good documentation on both the legacy IDS (which will beour baseline model) and the IDS-MLU. We'd like to do the GR1, ECR andpossibly the ADV variant too - the latter is depending to theavailability of resources. There is still A LOT of work to do on this project, so do notexpect a release (or even a Beta) anytime soon... but it is a verypromising one. In other news: AERMACCHI M-346We are a little late with the new textures and the systemsprogramming, but the new HTML5/JS HUD is almost ready. The flightmodel will use MSFS native FCS. We will release more details as weapproach to the Beta stage, which is hopefully just few weeksaway. EUROFIGHTER TYPHOONInitially we planned to use either commercial meshes as a startingpoint for this project, or improve on our P3D model... and in the endwe are remaking the 3D model basically from scratch, as we were nothappy about the shape of fuselage, the wing curvature and the airintake. It is coming along quite nicely, but it will take a littlelonger than expected (but we belive it is for the better). We have a couple of other projects in the works and we will showmore as soon as possible. ....and before you ask, YES, we are aware of the potential ofconverting some of our projects to DCS - but DCS development is WAYmore time consuming than MSFS, so projects must be chosen and plannedVERY carefully, otherwise they will fail - and at the moment our DCSis fully committed to deliver the MB.339. 16. /images/notams/notams22/dino0418.jpgFirst, we'd like to thank you once again for your support to ourF-35 project. Despite the initial stability problems experienced bysome users (thanks for your patience!) it has been a great success sofar, both in terms of sales and (more important for us) customerfeedback. During the weekend we have received several emails asking forupdates on this project in general, and in particular our progresswith the FCS system and XBox release, so here are some details onwhere we are. First, the general plan is to release a "quality of life" update(which will be 1.0.6) for the F-35 after Sim Update 9 isdeployed. This will be primarily targeted to solve a couple of minorbugs and mistakes and improve several small details in the avionics, and possibly take advantage of some of the changes of SU9. With regards to the two topics above: FCS - We have been doing quite a lot of work on the FCS, trying toimplement the native MSFS system. However we are not yet happy withthe results. In particular, the MSFS built-in fly-by-wire simulationseems pretty good for airliners, but not great for high-performancejets, especially in transonic and supersonic conditions. We will keep on working on it. As a temporary backup, we have tried restored the old XML-drivenautotrim system which is not super accurate but seems to work - but atthe moment we are focusing on the native MSDS fly-by-wireimplementation. XBOX - We have managed to significatively shrink the memoryfootprint of the F-35 down to approximately 730Mb. This is still wayabove the Asobo models (which are 200 to 300Mb) but *should* bemanageable. However, while the Microsoft/Asobo team thinks that thisis the main problem, frankly we are not totally convinced this is theonly issue with XBox compatibility, as there may be other things wehave not identified yet. The plan is to first complete the 1.0.6 improvements on PC and useit as baseline for a new XBox version - which will need to be testedby Microsoft. We hope this clarifies the situation. 19. /images/notams/notams22/dino0411/sukhoi-1.jpgWe are sorry but we were not able release the SU-31 during theweekend as we planned, as there were a couple of last-minute tweaks wehad to test and there were some errors in the manual. On the good side, last night we managed to fix pretty mucheverything...and the plane is ready for release: we just need to dothe bureaucratic stuff for file submission with the different vendors(every vendor requires slightly different things) but we expect theplane to be available in the next few days from all of our usualoutlets... except Microsoft, which - as usual - will have a slightlylonger lead time. /images/notams/notams22/dino0411/sukhoi-2.jpgPending Microsoft testing, the plane should also be available on XBox. Contrary to the commercial logic, we'd like to talk about a bit ofthe defects of this project - or, in marketing jargon, "opportunitiesfor further improvement": While we think the plane is fun to fly, and you should be able topull most aerobatic maneuvers, the flick/snap roll behavior is notgreat and it is difficult to control it precisely. Also, the simulatorseems to overestimate the energy loss during vertical maneuvers, so we"pumped" the engine and prop performance a little to have achievespeeds closer to the real aircraft during some maneuvers. Also, since the avionics are super-basic (just a radio and atransponder), this is probably not your best pick for long-crosscountry flights or any kind of complex navigation. Retail price will be around €17.5, depending on currencyexchange and applicable taxes. /images/notams/notams22/dino0411/sukhoi-3.jpgSource

F-35 - NEXT UPDATE AND XBOX COMPATIBILITYWe are working on a minor quality-of-life update to the F-35 for PCwhich will be released around Easter, but we are still working withMicrosoft for an XBox release. Latest news on the XBox issues point to the visual model:apparently the F-35 texture load is too much for the XBox to handle, and this is part of the problem. We suspect that there may beencryption issues too. Most likely we will have to create an XBoxspecific version, with lower resolution textures and other tricks toreduce memory footprint. T-45C - XBOX COMPATIBILITYWe are also working with Microsoft to understand why some users areexperiencing issues with this aircraft on XBox (both series S andX). At the moment we are looking to reduce the memory footprint, butthis does not explain why it works fine for most users but not forothers. At the moment version 1.2.4 has been put on hold for XBox toinvestigate the problem. /images/notams/notams22/dino0406/m346-1.jpgM-346 - WIPWe apologize for the lack of news on this project, but a couple ofweeks ago one M-346 crashed in the real world and one of the pilotdied. Therefore we refrained from posting anything on our recreationalvirtual rendition. The project is looking very good and it is moving forward at asteady pace - we hope it will be available for release beforesummer. /images/notams/notams22/dino0406/ta4j-1.jpgTA-4J - FIRST SCREENSHOTWe have started doing some "serious" work on our Skyhawk family forMSFS. As for our other project, we do not want this to be a lazyconversion from our P3D assets: we have started reworking the externalmodel to fix a number of inaccuracies, while the virtual cockpit willbe redone from scratch. It looks promising but it will take a while before it will beready. EUROFIGHTER - WIPWe are working hard on it, but it is still too early to show youanything... more news soon. We are also working on a lot of other things, including some VERYinteresting partnerships we cannot discuss at the moment...and let'snot forget about DCS! We'll provide some news for DCS crowd verysoon! Source Shop IndiaFoxtEcho at the FlightSim.Com Store
  21. /images/notams/notams22/dino0401/dino1.jpgIt is finally time to reveal our third project for DCS. After the MB-339 and the G.91, we have decided to recreatedigitally another Italian thoroughbred: the AEROGALLO aircraft. We think it is a perfect fit in terms of functionality in DCS and anatural evolution, in terms of complexity, of our DCS efforts. The Aerogallo project will feature extremely high-detail 3D model(down to the single rivet and bolt modeled in 3D!) and 8Ktextures. /images/notams/notams22/dino0401/dino2.jpgThe flight model will be extremely realistic, merging in-flighttest data with CFD predictions: our target is to be below 0.1% errorin any phase of the flight. All the systems and features of the real aircraft will be simulatedwith custom code, and all the weapon systems of the aircraft will beaccurately modeled, including the dreaded "Cock-a-doodle-do" soundwhich can be used for psychological warfare. We expect the DCS AEROGALLO module to be available in Q1-2023 - thesuggested retail price will be €94.99 (a little steep for ourstandards, but it reflects the high detail of this project and thedevelopment costs). New module is coming - DCS Aerogallo. Source
  22. /images/notams/notams22/dino0326.jpgProject updates, World Update VIII, Xbox, Marketplace and weapon models. Let's start with the bad news first: the latest build of the F-35is still causing problems with XBox (freeze, long loading times,CTDs). We believe this is due to the encryption process, but as oftoday the root cause of the problem has not been identified. Weunderstand the frustration of XBox users and we are sorry forthat... we'll keep on working on this. Speaking of the F-35, we have been receiving several messages fromusers who are disappointed for having purchased it on the Marketplaceand therefore and discovering that it has no weapons models. We hopedthat our communications and the product description were clear, but, once again, please note that MARKETPLACE RELEASES HAVE NO WEAPONMODELS. This is not our choice but it is a Marketplace rule dictated byMicrosoft and it is strictly enforced by their test team. For one, our carrier models have been REJECTED from the Marketplaceas they included self-defence weapon models. As for the lates MSFS build (1.24.5.0 "World Update VIII") wehave tested our product (past and future) and they all seem to work asintended. Speaking about our products: F-35 LIGHTNING II - We are still not happy with the new"FCS" flight model and we will continue working on it. Also, we areintroducing further improvements and features. Next update is plannedfor mid-April. SUKHOI SU-31 - It is basically ready for release. We'd liketo add some more LODs to the external model for better multiplayerframe rates and tweak a couple of minor details. It will be offered ata budget price. M-346 MASTER - We have refrained from posting news on thisproject after the fatal accident of March 16th. The project is movingforward, albeit a little slower than we planned, and looking prettygood. USS AMERICA and USS FORD CARRIERS - They have been rejectedfrom the Microsoft Marketplace as the models depict self-defenseweapon systems. We are evaluating the impact of their removal. Source Shop IndiaFoxtEcho at the FlightSim.Com Store, where the carriers ARE available as is the fully functional F-35.

  24. F-35 Lightning II Publisher: IndiaFoxtEcho Review Author: Dale Ashcroft Suggested Price: $28.49 Aircraft Overview The following is an extract from Wikipedia: The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The aircraft has three main variants: the conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) F-35A, the short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) F-35B, and the carrier-based (CV/CATOBAR) F-35C. The aircraft descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is principally funded by the United States, with additional funding from program partner countries from NATO and close U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and formerly Turkey. Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft. The F-35B entered service with the U.S. Marine Corps in July 2015, followed by the U.S. Air Force F-35A in August 2016 and the U.S. Navy F-35C in February 2019. The F-35 was first used in combat in 2018 by the Israeli Air Force. The U.S. plans to buy 2,456 F-35s through 2044, which will represent the bulk of the crewed tactical airpower of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps for several decades. The aircraft is projected to operate until 2070. Purchasing At the time of this review, the aircraft is priced at a very reasonable $28.49 which is great as you get a lot of bang for your buck with this one. The purchase of the product was quick and painless from the FlightSim.Com Store and with a download size of around 2.2 GB. Install One thing that I have come to love of the new MSFS is the quick way of manually installing a product, no more needing to run through an auto installer that sends the files to the correct location such as a folder for the aircraft, gauges, etc. Simply drag and drop into the community folder and off you go. So easy, even my two-year-old could do it (most probably). Documentation The product comes with a 53-page document that includes: Change log for each update Welcome section Minimum hardware requirements Installation Credits External Loads Brief overview of the aircraft Performance information Sensors and avionics (Note that Sensors are not operational within MSFS as of yet) Cockpit orientation Details of each display page (HUD included) Operating information for the three different types (CTOL/STOVL/Carrier Ops) Overall, a pretty comprehensive document which tells you all you need to know. Cockpit Throughout the development of aircraft, cockpits have become less, and less cluttered with dials and switches, and are now very clean looking. The F-35 is a very minimalistic cockpit with very few switches and no dials. Instead, all the information is presented on a huge wide screen, that is broken up into four sections that can be manipulated to display whatever you wish. Think of it like a huge tablet. The shear amount of information that can be displayed is astonishing. All three variants have exactly the same cockpit layout, the only minor difference is to do with the avionics. For example, there is the option on the screen to fold the wings on the C model. There are some drawbacks to this rendition of the F-35 however. Not all pages are available in the aircraft though, such as the TFLIR, this is because (from what I understand at least) MSFS has not provided the means to be able to model several of the omitted functions. I had this aircraft when it was available for another platform, and the developer did have every page available, which was great. Knowing the developer, I do believe that once the functions are made available by Asobo/Microsoft, they will implement them so they can provide an even better experience for the user. The HMD is also not true to life. In the real world the HMD information is injected into the pilots helmet, which means no matter where you look, your information is always present. In the current build, the HMD is more of a HUD, static in its positioning in front of the pilot - again, a limitation of MSFS rather than a limitation of the developer. Visibility out of the cockpit is pretty spot on too, so much of the world available for you to observe as you thrash around at low level or simply cruising around taking in all the sights that MSFS has to offer. Having said that, the rear visibility isn't that of an F-16, but there is always a trade off with aircraft design in favor of performance, etc. Externals I always have to stop and just look at the aircraft these days with what is possible within MSFS 2020. If you did not know any better, you could be mistaken for thinking it was a real picture. To me the F-35 is not the most appealing aircraft in terms of beauty; more like the ugly duckling compared to the F-15's and F-16's of this world, although I am slowly changing my mind the more I see it. The developer has captured the aircraft perfectly though, the curved surfaces sculpted to perfection, the edges, carved so crisply you could almost cut paper with them. Each of the three variants are slightly different in appearance from an external perspective. The A model has a gun mounted inside the aircraft and this can be seen above the left hand intake. The B model is the same size as the A, but the B variant is almost like a transformer when you enter the STOVL mode. Huge panels open to distort the smooth surfaces so that air can be sucked into the giant engine for STOVL flight as well as having the exhaust at the rear moving downwards. The C model is the larger of the variants with a much increased wing area which means it can fly at a much lower speed that is needed in order to put this baby down on an aircraft carrier, it also has a much beefier undercarriage to withstand the impacts of such a controlled crash. Other than that, the aircraft are more or less the exact same. Here are views of each of the three variants: Secret compartments are chiselled into the aircraft to house weapons, so not to increase the aircraft's RCS (RADAR Cross Section). Weapons can be added to the aircraft via the payload menu, figures for weapons can be found in the manual. It is worth noting that weapons are only available on the aircraft if NOT bought through the MSFS marketplace (another reason to shop at the FlightSim.Com Store). The weapons are there purely as decoration and cannot be released from the aircraft, that has to be left to your imagination. I can only assume it is a limitation within MSFS, and maybe one day this could be implemented into the add-on. Liveries The aircraft in the real world does not offer much in terms of variety in color schemes. It's very much 50 shades of grey, with the odd splash of high-viz paint, with the occasional aircraft that displays a daring side and has the entire fin painted (from what I could find only the demonstrators). The recreation of schemes are fantastic however, very detailed with all the expected decals, etc., and plenty to choose from. The included schemes cover more or less from the majority of operators both American and worldwide, which gives you the chance to fly your own country's aircraft. There is also a wide range of freeware schemes available for the aircraft too which are easy to install should you wish. Flight Model The three different variations of aircraft all present a slightly different way of flying, mainly in the take-off and landing phase of flight. During normal operations the aircraft really packs a punch when you engage reheat and start the take-off roll. I found that as soon as the wheels leave the earth, she really gathers some momentum allowing you to pull straight up into the vertical and simply climb like a home sick angel. I did find that by about 10,000 feet it was time to roll out and continue to ascend at a more manageable rate, otherwise I would have stalled and found the earth rushing up towards me. Unconventional take-offs in the aircraft are different however (unknown for the C variant as I do not have an aircraft carrier to operate from). In the B model, there is the ability to carry out a short take-off, and as I mentioned earlier, this is when the F-35B becomes a transformer and opens up several panels. What the short take-off allows you to do is to operate from small airstrips or carriers without the need for any assistance, a catapult for example. I can imagine it would be quite the rush in real life to go hurtling towards the end of a deck on an aircraft carrier, only hoping that you have enough thrust to keep you afloat and slowly loft you into the sky. The F-35 is intelligent when it comes to the vectoring of the exhaust. The Harrier used to have a throttle and then a separate lever to control the direction of the nozzles. Not in the F-35. The aircraft's computers are constantly calculating the best position to point the exhaust depending on the airspeed of the aircraft, and also the position of the throttle as set by the pilot, clever stuff when you think about what would be required to calculate all of that. Manoeuvring the aircraft is simple, as you would expect from a fly-by wire aircraft. I was able to pull plenty of G-force that soon put some nice fluffy clouds over my wings. Overall, trying to put an aerobatic sequence together isn't too difficult and the aircraft seems to be able to generate enough thrust to get you out of any pickle that you find yourself in. Standard circuit flying is not difficult either, just make sure you keep the power on if you are flying a tight circuit otherwise you could find yourself in a sticky situation. Now for the interesting part - the hover. Hovering the aircraft isn't as difficult as you might think. As I mentioned earlier, the aircraft is smart at deciding where to point the exhaust. This means you can concentrate on flying the aircraft rather than constantly switching between the throttle and the nozzle handle. Certain parameters must be met however before you can enter STOVL mode, such as flying at a sufficiently slow enough speed and not having the aircraft banking too steep, otherwise the aircraft's FCS will simply deny you the option to enter this mode. Entering STOVL mode is as simple as pressing a button. There is a function that is included for auto-hover, which is quite handy when you want to stabilize yourself before slowly descending down to the tarmac. Overall I think that the flight model is lovely, she handle's well and isn't too much like hard work. Sounds Overall, sounds can be slightly subjective, as I believe it depends on the set-up you have. I always fly with a headset on, which for me, really adds to the immersion. In the cockpit you can hear the little clicks of buttons being pressed which is a nice touch. It can be very noisy in the office if you have the canopy open, but I do like the effect of it getting slightly quieter once you have closed it up. Externally is of course where we really hear the magic going on. I've been around a few F-35's when they are up and running, and one thing they certainly are is noisy, and this rendition is no exception. The roar of the engine sounds impressive at idle, and then you increase the power and really feel the earth shake. Overall, a good sound system I believe. VR Virtual reality is very much a personal preference, I find it hard these days to not fly in VR. I love that extra layer of immersion, wanting to reach out and touch the displays, having to twist and turn in my chair to look around. I found the experience in VR to be good. I use the Oculus Rift, which by today's standards is starting to get on a bit and the image quality isn't as sharp as I'm sure the newer pieces of equipment are, so I think that it is only fair to exclude this VR section from the overall score at the end. In my Rift, I found it hard to read the displays clearly (again a limitation of the Rift, not the aircraft), but if I leaned in slightly, I was able to read them fine and in the end, I just got used to what things looked like and found the overall experience in VR to be very comfortable and totally immersive. It was incredibly handy when trying to hover, as I could keep peering out to make sure I was still lined up. System Requirements Recommended Specs CPU: 4 cores, 3.0 GHz or better GPU: Nvidia 1060 or better, with at least 4 GB dedicated video memory RAM: 8 GB minimum Hard disk space: 4.50 GB required Test Specs Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz (Coffee Lake) Socket LGA1151 Processor Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200 MHz Asus GeForce RTX 2080 Dual OC 8192 MB GDDR6 PCI-Express Graphics Card Microsoft Windows 10 Home Advanced Samsung 1TB 860 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 64 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive Overall My final thoughts of the aircraft are simple - Sublime. Whilst I don't think the aircraft can be labelled as study-level, and I have no doubt there is some serious challenges getting any sort of information on the systems for the aircraft, I believe the developer has done a standout job. Yes, there are some things missing in terms of systems, but these are a limitation of the sim and not the aircraft (at the time of writing that is). I have no doubt that if it was possible, the developer would implement as many systems as they could. The aircraft is fun to fly and extremely rewarding at the same time, especially when trying to hover. This aircraft will most definitely make it on to my flight line rather than gather dust in the hangar. Dale Ashcroft Purchase IndiaFoxtEcho - F-35 Lightning II for MSFS
