  1. /images/notams/notams22/asp0224.jpgOver several months and many updates, in lockstep with new P3Dbuilds, ASP3D has evolved to offer the best weather simulationexperience possible on the latest versions of the P3D v5 and P3D v4platforms. This latest official ASP3D update incorporates all theredesigns, interface changes, new functionality, adjustments and fixesthat have been required. The update is offered absolutely free ofcharge to all existing ASP3D customers. B8080 (Update 021422) brings latest P3D 5.3 HF2 compatibility, newEA mode and Volumetric Clouds mode depiction improvements, newVolumetric Cloud transition smoothing enhancements, tuned visibilitydepiction in all modes, new EA mode in-cloud visibility reduction andcloud motion effect for low ceilings, and much, much more. Get the B8080 update today from the downloads page at HiFiSimulation Technologies:http://hifisimtech.com/downloads Note: If you have already installed B8080 during the Open Betacycle, you do not need to re-install it. Changelog: Update February 14, 2022 (B8080)[02/14/22] Fixed issue in installation package with VC++ Runtime Redistributables check and automatic install preventing proper SimConnect initialization in some cases with Prepar3D v4.5[02/11/22] Adjusted theme reload frequency/triggers in EA+Volumetric Clouds mode for additional dynamic weather changes throughout a flight (also eliminates potential inconsistencies in conditions data compared with actual depiction)[02/02/22] Fixed issue with custom weather mode aloft editing page parsing issue causing wrong/low temperatures aloft in some regional/number format settings[02/02/22] Changed destination reload/force distance to 40nm (vs 70nm) with EA+Volumetric Clouds when Flight Plan is loaded and departure to destination distance is less than 100nm, to provide more variety in weather conditions for these shorter GA-type flights[01/24/22] Reduced non-EA mode upper visibility at high altitudes by approximately 20% when set to 199 miles or less for better atmospheric haze effect (use 200 miles for increased upper visibility with EA off - applies to P3D 5.3+)[01/24/22] Reverted maximum upper visibility option change to 200 miles - now back to 199 miles by default when EA mode is off (Docs updated)[01/19/22] Further visibility tuning for more consistent results between EA and non-EA modes (P3D 5.3+)[01/19/22] Changed Maximum upper visibility option default to 200 miles vs. 199 miles based on latest feedback - Use less than 200 miles if you prefer lower visibility (more atmospheric haze) at higher altitudes[01/19/22] Updated and tuned visibility handling in both EA and non-EA modes for higher effective aloft visibility and better volumetric fog depiction/blending (for P3D 5.3+)[01/19/22] Changed default minimum and maximum cloud draw distance options to 110 vs. previous 90 miles for better non-Volumetric cloud visuals despite an increase in potential cloud depiction overhead (to achieve better balance with P3D 5.3+ with legacy clouds) - Documentation updated for this change[01/19/22] Fixed visibility issue in EA mode (gray or brown band or excessive horizon visibility restriction)[01/19/22] P3D 5.3.17.28160 (HF2) compatibility established with preliminary depiction tuning[01/18/22] Added additional detail to error messages when P3D Appdata or Simulator installation path cannot be validated, due to potentially not running P3D for the first time after a fresh install - Running P3D first is required so that necessary configuration files are created and can be found/validated[01/10/22] Added experimental new EA-mode (volumetric or legacy clouds) In-Cloud visibility reduction and Cloud Motion Effect for lower overcast/broken clouds (controlled by existing user options) - works for ceiling clouds below 5000ft AGL only on P3D 5.3+[01/10/22] Adjusted cumulus cloud thickness when using Volumetric Clouds (with EA mode) to be thinner (max 15000ft) to prevent excessively dark daytime skies below these clouds[01/10/22] Adjusted cumulonimbus cloud thickness when using Volumetric Clouds (with EA mode) to be thinner (max 20000ft) to prevent excessively dark daytime skies below these cloudsNOTE: Volumetric Clouds depiction (with EA mode) effectivelyrenders the cloud thickness much higher, anywhere from 30 to 100%higher than as configured, so the reduction of thickness parametersshould not result in a visual reduction of height of thunderstormclouds [01/10/22] - Adjusted stratus cloud thickness when using Volumetric Clouds (with EA mode) to be thinner (max 3000ft) to prevent excessively dark daytime skies below stratus layers[01/10/22] Fixed EA visibility issue where visibility could be rendered too high[01/10/22] Updated options descriptions and documentation for updated EA mode and volumetric cloud mode considerations (some options previously hidden have been unhidden as they are now available in EA mode depending on volumetric clouds option)[01/07/22] Added additional DLL version checking and warning when a mixed/invalid P3D installation with mixed components exists, which could cause multiple issues with P3D itself as well as add-ons[01/07/22] Fixed issue with Reset to Defaults button not properly resetting to default options in Settings screen[01/07/22] Fixed issue where precipitation (rain/snow) might not depict properly in P3D when ASP3D client not running and manual P3D weather themes/condition settings are used[01/06/22] Added special error handling and logging for rare cloud model saving error issue troubleshooting[01/06/22] Tuned cloud detection logic for P3D 5.3+ for more appropriate in-cloud detection (was detecting outside clouds in some cases due to cloud scale/rendering changes in P3D) - Applies only to Volclouds off and/or EA off[01/04/22] Fixed issue where very long smoothing transition times might occur with P3D 5.3+, causing very high visibility when low visibility is expected, especially on approach/landing at destination in IMC where clearer visibility exists on the approach path and descent into surface altitudes (below approximately 7,000ft) occurs at those initially-higher visibilities[01/04/22] Increased visibility transition speed in general (P3D 5.3+) to further avoid potentially long smoothing times in some cases[01/04/22] Increased wind smoothing transition speed by approximately 4 times (P3D 5.3+ only) to avoid high surface wind situations on approach/final when lower upper-air winds are very high and surface winds are much lower[12/23/21] P3D compatibility established with 5.3.15.28131 (HF1+Update for lights fix)[12/20/21] Fixes for AS Connector package/revision issues in previous build[12/19/21] Added automatic force of maximum upper visibility to 200sm when EA mode is on, or EA mode is changed to on during a session[12/19/21] Added automatic hide of visibility options that do not have effect when EA mode is ON[12/17/21] Reverted some previous 5.3.12-intended visibility changes, as the now-available P3D shader fix from LM is available to apply and does a better job and providing expected general visibility vs. ASP3D adjustments - This shader fix is expected to be available officially in the next P3D update/hotfix - See https://prepar3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=250756#p250756 to apply the fix yourself until it is provided in an update[12/17/21] Minor volumetric fog adjustments for better visuals[12/17/21] Removed max upper visibility slider option when in EA mode to avoid confusion and assist with better visuals in all EA mode conditions, forcing this internal setting to 200 miles when EA is active (changing option on the fly in simulator may result in unpredictable visibility behavior, and a restart of sim/ASP3D is recommended when changing modes)[12/17/21] Updated option descriptions and documentation to account for changed/missing options in recent updates[12/17/21] Adjusted legacy (non-volumetric) cloud theme load update process to avoid potential clear or thin clouds issue in some cases[12/15/21] P3D compatibility updates and tuning[12/12/21] Various adjustments and tuning to visibility, both upper and lower altitude, for better P3D 5.3 results in all cases and all graphics/depiction modes (EA/Volumetric Clouds)[12/12/21] Horizon distance adjustment options and relevant visibility depiction results tuned for better P3D 5.3 results (applies only to non-EA mode)[12/09/21] Brought back the "Maximum upper visibility" option and defaulted this to 199 miles, providing upper altitude visibility "haze at a distance" by default as per feedback - To turn off any haze and have upper visibility be effectively unlimited as per previous 7900 and later builds, set this to 200 miles (docs updated)[12/09/21] Adjusted visibility depiction to prevent visibility being rendered too high in many cases with P3D 5.3[12/07/21] Adjusted visibility smoothing interval to be significantly quicker with P3D 5.2+ to avoid excessively lengthy transitions that might result in unexpected visibility conditions, especially during landing at destination[12/01/21] P3D v5.3.12 compatibility added[11/18/21] AS Connector Installer package update fix for ActiveSkyUtils.exe version checking to properly identify out-of-version installations and notify that update is required on some version of P3D[11/13/21] Adjusted ambient precipitation trigger to override surface conditions and always follow the radar if conditions did not specify precipitation in METAR (e.g., in areas of transitioning conditions) - Applies only to non-volumetric legacy clouds or non-EA mode[11/09/21] Adjusted SimConnect interface process for better performance[11/09/21] Adjusted New User Registration Form to remove reference to old open beta[11/09/21] Adjusted process to prevent ASCA theme installation when not needed (e.g. EA Mode On with Volumetric Clouds On)[09/20/21] Attempted fix/adjustment regarding Weather Request Menu in P3D where temperature and dewpoint, when using certain Windows number formats, would result in a missing decimal separator (e.g., 15,0C would be outputted as 150C) - Now all comma (,) characters are converted to period (.) characters (150C now shows as 15.0C) to help avoid confusion despite potentially wrong decimal separator - This is due to P3D not properly handling comma (,) characters in Menu text[09/18/21] Fixed potential problem with ambient interpolation (such as improper temperature in spare areas in some cases)[09/09/21] Fixed problem with XGauge BKG button not cycling correctly[08/19/21] Significant visibility handling changes for better accuracy, reduced hard line depiction at lower altitudes, and better smoothing when using P3D v5.2 HF1 (or later)[08/19/21] Disabled the application of Low and High altitude Volfog horizon distance adjustments when in EA mode, since these options do not have the intended effect - these option descriptions and User's Guide reference items have been modified to indicate that these options only apply to non-EA mode[08/19/21] Removed Maximum Upper Visibility option description in User's Guide (option removed in previous update and forced to 200 miles for best results)[08/19/21] Fixed issue related to Cloud Draw Distance and EA mode with legacy (non-volumetric) clouds, where ASP3D would reduce the apparent cloud draw distance to 80 miles regardless of CDD settings[08/19/21] Various small documentation and user option description updates regarding EA-mode applicability[08/11/21] Fixed an issue related to loading of multiple previously-saved offline weather filesPurchase HiFi Technologies - 8. /images/notams/notams20/hifi0916.jpgIt's time for a HiFi development update! Over the past months we have seen some amazing things in thesimulation community along with big events including the release ofP3D v5, MSFS and X-Plane 11.50. Through it all, we have been doing ourbest to respond to all the changes, technical considerations, compatibility challenges, and restructuring of the sim community andmarket, with new market directions and demands. This is in addition tocontinuing development on multiple projects on multiple platformswhile supporting our existing products and data network. Of course, weare also dealing with the local, national and world-wide issues thatwe all face lately in an unprecedented fashion. In short, our plate isvery full and as a very small team, and we haven’t been able torespond or engage as frequently as we'd like to, nor have we been ableto release as many updates, upgrades and new products as we hadhoped. Despite the slow-coming updates and community engagement, we aredefinitely making progress on several fronts and wanted to take theopportunity to give everyone an update on what to expect from HiFiover the next months. MSFS: We have received tremendous support and encouragementfrom the community to create an Active Sky for MSFS weather engine andwe really appreciate all the feedback! While Asobo and MS have done anincredible job with the new weather system, it has clearly stoked thedemand and need for Active Sky features for more advanced weatherexperiences. We're looking at this as a future potential platform todevelop on, but currently, we are not aware of any weatherextensibility and we are not sure at this time what the timeline is orwhat the eventual possibilities will be. We have prepared foundationalcomponents for an eventual MSFS Active Sky weather engine, and as soonas we have the capability to interface with MSFS, we certainlywill. We are anxiously awaiting more news and updates to the MSFSroadmap along with planned SDK improvements and will provide furtherupdates when we can. Anyone who would like to see MSFS weather-related SDK functions andpotential weather add-ons from any developer, sooner rather thanlater, should upvote this wishlist item posted on theflight simulator forums. P3D v5: As we are all expecting further updates to P3Despecially to the EA TruSky cloud depiction implementation, HiFi hasbeen preparing for this along with finalizing the ASP3D product inpreparation for release. We have extended the OPEN BETA that is opento all ASP4 licensees and we hope to move to the release candidatestage very soon. See theASP3D pagefor more information. As a reminder, every ASP4 customer whoparticipates in the OPEN BETA will receive ASP3Dv5 FREE of charge whenreleased. X-Plane: X-Plane 11.50 has officially released and we haveupdated ASXP and related systems accordingly to provide fullsupport. The latest ASXP Open Beta is available and expected to becomeofficial very soon. Beyond that, we are actively developing andextending the ASXP technology we debuted in late 2018 and will beannouncing details of our next major version very soon. Covering allends of the weather experience, we are working to improve everythingfrom visuals to realism while preparing for expected new improvementsin the X-Plane weather visualization system. We are expecting to havedevelopment wrapping up sometime around the middle of next year, butas always, cannot make any guarantees as to when it will be ready. Asalways, significant discounts via upgrade pricing are planned for allnew major versions. Thanks go out to all our customers and supporters! In these verychallenging times we sincerely appreciate you and everything you do toenable us to continue our passion of developing advanced aviationweather simulation for desktop flight simulation. 10. Active Sky For Prepar3DPublisher: HiFi Simulation TechnologiesReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $49.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-11.jpgIn flight simulation, one of its mostimportant aspects is its meteorological setup and how airflow issimulated around your aircraft. This determines how your aircraft willreact in different weather patterns as well as giving you a differentcontrol feel upon certain conditions. This is also the key to howrealistic your simulation is! HiFi Simulation Technologies has long been leaders in the flightsimulation scene for their weather enhancing add-ons and updated cloudtexture packs. Active Sky is their flagship product and for years hasbeen trusted by many to create realistic flying conditions within FSX,P3D and even X-Plane! In this review, we take a closer look at Active Sky for P3D v4 andsee if this edition of their long-standing weather platform sits withthe glowing reviews that previous versions have been given! /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-01.jpg /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-05.jpgDownload And InstallationInstallation for Active Sky is simple to follow but requires a few steps. Firstly you will want to ensure that your simulator is closed andyou are connected to the internet - this is important for activationas well as allowing the platform to update your weather to matchreal-world METAR. Once this has been installed, a pop-up asks if you would like toinstall AS Connect. Select yes to this as AS Connect is what allowsActive Sky to talk to the simulator and send it weather updates on thego. This works in a very similar way to SimConnect. After installation, the Active Sky client will then open. Inputyour activation key and email and you are good to go! There is then one further optional download and that is forX-Gauge, a weather radar panel for your aircraft, and this can beinstalled onto all or a select few of your planes. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-06.jpg /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-07.jpgInside the root Active Sky folder is a series of documents that canhelp you through the installation and setup process of Active Sky indetail, such as a readme file with a series of troubleshooting stepsand a Documentation folder with a 108-page user guide in PDF and WordDocument formats. If you ever get stuck with this add-on, there iscertainly a lot here that can help you! FeaturesActive Sky is a client that sits separately from the simulator butconnects to it through its proprietary system. The client forms thehub of Active Sky on your simulator and lets you interact with severaldifferent menus and options to tweak settings to your requirements. These include many realism and update settings to help you find theright balance for you. With Active Sky turned on and your weather preset active, it willthen inject this data into your simulator, and within a few seconds, the sky will be completely transformed. Empty patches of sky arefilled in; the unrealistic unlimited visibility reigned in (andadjusted depending on your altitude) and turbulence bumps added tochoppy winds. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-03.jpgThere is also the ability to use historical weather from a previousdate and year with weather data stored as far back as August 1st 2014!This allows you to recreate flights you have made in the past withworld weather matching, or even fly through storms and meteorologicalevents that have occurred since. Customer weather can also be determined with Active Sky, allowingyou to paste your own METAR data into a specific airport orregion. This can certainly be fun with the ability to create totalchaos within the simulator skies! Anybody up for an 80+ knot gustingthunderstorm? Next, we have a map which includes several overlays such as cloudlayers, airports, weather stations, shear warnings and other airtraffic to name a few. The map allows you to view the weather alongwith your flight plan from a top-down perspective and provides youwith enough information to make any adjustments in the case of poorweather. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-04.jpgX-Gauge, as lightly touched on, is a plane weather radar panel thatcan be activated within the simulator. This shows off the sameinformation as you get on the Active Sky client map, but directlywithin the simulator itself. This allows you to access vitalinformation without the need to tab in and out of your flight. Then you have a conditions page which allows you to search for anairport or station and view the local METAR. One thing I like aboutActive Sky is the way it shows this information. You can view both theMETAR string in its raw format, or you can use the UI to view theinformation displayed in an easy and user-friendly way! This meansthat anybody from a veteran real-world pilot to a first-flightnewcomer can view and understand this information in a way that bestsuits them. I have certainly made use of the Briefing page too! Here it givesyou an overview of your flight and weather updates throughout thedifferent waypoints en route. On longer flights especially this canprove helpful in determining the change in weather as you get closerto your destination. It may also reveal a waypoint or two you may wantto deviate from if the winds start proving too much. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-08.jpg /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-09.jpgA nice extra that Active Sky also provides is a Scenariospage. Here you can try out different weather effects including somethat led to real-world aviation incidents. These scenarios can pushthe simulator to its limits as you try to avoid facing serious issuesyourself! In-FlightWhen flying, Active Sky completely transforms worldwide weather tomatch that of real METAR data. This means if you were to fly from yourlocal airport, the weather will likely match what you are seeingoutside your window! This weather is also constantly updated (every 15minutes by default) to ensure that you are seeing updated weatherpatterns as they come and go. One other nice feature of Active Sky is the ability to have cloudsmove across the sky. These follow wind patterns and speed to determinehow fast the cloud will coast, adding to a realistic sky environment, much more realistic to how clouds and airflow works. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-10.jpgA feature that I do like is the wing fade and in cloud visibilityeffects. When you fly through a large cloud, visibility will shoot tozero as your aircraft is surrounded by clouds, and smoke effects will acton the aircraft's wings to make them fade in and out of view. Defaultclouds in P3D are done via an effect called Billboarding, where a flattexture is rotated to face towards you. Flying through a cloud thencauses it to disappear with no depth whatsoever. This is a very nicelyadjusted tweak and finally gives you the feeling of flying through asolid cloud. One thing that P3D does get some criticism for is the simplicity ofthe flight model, where aircraft can feel that they are on rails. Withno airflow simulation and air sitting still, it can sometimes feelamiss, especially when flying a light aircraft that can feel the fulleffect of external weather. Active Sky certainly adds those bumps anddrafts you have been missing! /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-02.jpgMixing And MatchingAs well as Active Sky, HiFi Tech also sell their Cloud Artpackage which is a series of realistic textures that better suit theActive Sky environment, giving you the best possible experience fromtheir part. It also recreates the simulator's cloud structures to givethem more realistic visuals such as 3D structure and depth. Opinion And Closing RemarksAs always, I cannot recommend Active Sky highly enough! It is asimple tool that completely changes the way you fly within Prepar3D. Withrealistic weather injection and wind management, you get to enjoy thefull in-flight experience from clear skies to turbulent storms. /images/reviews/activesk/t/active-sky-12.jpgOne thing that should also be mentioned is the fact that thispackage is also compatible for P3D v3, meaning if you were not one whomade the jump to the newer Prepar3D platforms, you will still be ableto download and run this add-on without any issue. At the time of writing, HiFi Tech has also announced that they arecurrently updating ActiveSky for P3D v5, meaning it won't be too longeither until we see this tool mix with TrueSky clouds, something I amcertain will completely change the way we see weather within a flightsimulator! If you're looking for something to bring your Prepar3D world tolife, then this is certainly the add-on for you! /images/fsc/logos/flightsimcom-award-of-excellence.png Because of our reviewer's outstanding findings, FlightSim.Com gives HiFi Simulation Technologies - Active Sky for P3D our Award of ExcellenceThe Technical BitMinimum RequirementsWindows 7, 8.1, 10 or laterPrepar3D v42 GHz processor or better2 GB RAM or better1 GB available hard drive spaceMinimum monitor resolution to access all user interface features: 1024x768Sound device (for sound and voice features)Review PC SpecsPrepar3D v4Windows 10 Professional/images/reviews/activesk/buy-active-sky.jpg6th Generation Intel® Core™ i7 6700K Processor16 GB RAMNVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 745 Michael Hayward Purchase HiFi Technologies - Active Sky for P3D Purchase Active Sky Cloud Art

  14. Active Sky Cloud ArtPublisher: HiFi TechnologiesReview Author: Meng YuSuggested Price: $22.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngIntroductionWhilst scenery and aircraft are themainstay of flight simulator add-ons since the very beginning, products that enhance the sky are seeing a surge inpopularity. Considering that most of flying is, in fact, done in thesky, this comes as no surprise. Active Sky Cloud Art (ASCA) is one such product fromHiFi Technologies- the same company that made the highly popular Active Sky weatherengine that injects real-time weather into your flight simulator - andis advertised to provide a visually appealing experience whilst havingminimal performance sacrifices. ProductSo, what is ASCA? At its core, ASCA is not entirely unlike productssuch as Cielosim's Airport Enhancer HDX in the sense that it's atexture replacement program, only for the sky. However, its uniquenessarises from its ability to not only enhance existing cloud texturesbut also to add entirely new "cloud scenes" and "cloud structures" inorder to provide a more realistic experience whilst flying. Despite the amazing visuals that ASCA provides though, it's still aperformance-oriented product. HiFi Technologies did not merely throwin a bunch of HD textures and call it a day, but instead created eightdifferent texture sets for a total of 128 textures so as to vary thequality of textures in order to improve performance. For example, ASCAuses lower resolution textures for overcast layers to improveperformance within the simulator as the visual impact of such adecision is calculated to be rather insignificant. Booting up ASCA, you'll be greeted with the screen below. ASCAworks based on the concept of "themes", where each theme has adifferent sky color, cloud texture and cirrus cloud appearance. Ifyou own Active Sky 2016 or Active Sky for P3Dv4, you'll be able toutilize additional options such as "Full Dynamics" or "GlobalAutomatic", both of which automatically regulate sky colors andcirrus appearance, though "Full Dynamics" lacks automatic cloudtexture control. These options will provide a much more realisticflying experience as the program will be able to fully adjust thetextures based on the current weather. /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-welcome-01.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-welcome-02.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-welcome-03.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-welcome-04.jpgThe resolution of textures can be selected in the settings menu, going as high as 2048x2048 for the normal download, or, should youhave the desire, up to 4096x4096 with an HD content pack. Additionalfeatures include the options for how much of ASCA is enabled as wellas various simulator settings (such as choosing which simulator toinject weather into). Finally, ASCA provides "Art Tools" which allows users to createtheir own textures for ASCA should they prefer to. Visuals And PerformanceLoading up the simulator, there is quite an obvious differencebefore and after installing ASCA. Here're some comparisons betweendefault P3D clouds and ASCA clouds with the default weather theme:Major Thunderstorm. The same settings were used in both tests andcloud coverage was set to maximum. Pay particular attention to howASCA creates clouds that are more defined whilst making the sky a morevibrant shade of blue. Default P3D: /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-01.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-02.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-03.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-04.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-05.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-06.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-07.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-dflt-08.jpgASCA only: /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-01.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-02.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-03.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-04.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-05.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-06.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-07.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-08.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-09.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-10.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-11.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-12.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-13.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-asca-14.jpgAs evident from the pictures, ASCA provides a marked improvement incloud textures and structures over that of default P3D. Due tolimitations of my computer system, I was unable to fully test the HDtextures in 4096x4096 resolution. Nonetheless, from the results above, there should be no doubt that ASCA will provide more realistic skytextures. Performance wise, ASCA performs admirably as well. Despite thehigh-quality cloud models and textures, I didn't notice significantlowering of frame rates at all. In fact, I daresay that on higher endsystems, there will be no decrease at all arising from the use ofASCA. However, whilst ASCA provides a welcome facelift to the skies overdefault P3D textures, I feel that its textures and models are nobetter than that of the competition. Whilst something as ambiguous asthe likability of cloud textures is really up to the individual, I dofeel that REX does offer more options when it comes to injectingvarious clouds in to your simulator. Especially when considering itsprice tag, offerings from Rex Game Studios are a compelling optionindeed. Integration With Active Sky 2016 (P3Dv4)However, the biggest selling point of this product is certainly itsintegration with Active Sky 2016. In fact, some have argued that ASCAshould have been bundled together with Active Sky 2016. Active Sky isperhaps one of the best weather engines available for flight simcurrently with its ability to recreate real-world weather. As bothActive Sky and ASCA are from the same publisher, there are numerousadvantages when combining the two products together. Perhaps most obviously is the ability to use the "Full Dynamics"and "Global Automatic" theme settings in ASCA. What these themes docan be easily inferred from their names: allow weather to become muchmore dynamic. Both of these themes allow ASCA to load more than onetexture for each of the categories (Sky Color, Cirrus Appearance andCloud Textures) as per the current weather. As a result, you may getto experience several cloud structures and textures throughout oneflight, making the weather much more natural and less static. In fact, the effects of ASCA are said to be the most obvious when flyingthrough constantly changing weather. /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-01.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-02.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-03.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-04.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-05.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-06.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-07.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-08.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-09.jpg /images/reviews/cloudart/t/ASCA-integrated-10.jpgSecondly, when combining ASCA and Active Sky, weather themes can bechanged on the fly. No longer are the days of restarting the simulatorevery time you wish to experience a new theme. When Active Sky isactivated alongside ASCA, the selected theme will be used by ActiveSky when injecting weather into the simulator, thus eliminating theneed to restart the simulator when changing themes. I personally foundthis feature highly helpful as it allowed me to quickly cycle throughvarious themes without restarting my simulator multiple times. Forusers, it will be much easier to experience all the available themes(or make your own!) to find something you like the best. ConclusionIn the end, I feel that while a stand-alone product, Active SkyCloud Art was really developed with the intention that it would beused alongside Active Sky, especially considering the myriad offeatures that depend on Active Sky to work. As a stand-alone productthough, it is not highly appealing since most of the visuals it offersmay not be fully utilized by default weather themes. Hence, if you're an existing owner of Active Sky and wish toimprove your flight simulator experience, ASCA would certainly be theadd-on for you. /images/reviews/cloudart/asca.jpgMeng Yu Purchase Active Sky Cloud Art Shop other HiFi Technologies add-ons now on sale at the FlightSim.Com Store

  18. 24. Active Sky XPPublisher: HiFi Simulation TechnologiesReview Author: Sean McLeodSuggested Price: $39.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngWelcome, fellow flight simmers, to areview of Active Sky XP, created by HiFi Simulation Technologies. Thisreview will focus on the basic installation and operation of thesoftware, a real-weather enhancement add-on for X-Plane 11. But first, here is a little background on the HiFi Sim Tech group, from their web site: "Refining Weather Accuracy and Realism since2000! Active Sky is a comprehensive weather simulation engine for FSX,P3D and now the X-Plane desktop flight simulator platforms. Over 20years in development, Active Sky continues its ongoing journey in anongoing quest to improve the simulated aviation weather experience foreveryone. HiFi is comprised of pilots, programmers and artists whoshare a common passion for aviation, weather and simulation. We strivefor the most realistic weather experience possible, alwaysprioritizing function and fidelity above all else. We love what we doand thank all our customers and supporters for enabling us to continueto improve and expand Active Sky!" Here is the description of the Active Sky XP product, as presentedby developer HiFi Simulation Technologies: "Introducing HiFi's first weather engine for the X-Planeplatform... Active Sky XP (ASXP) brings the popular award-winningActive Sky weather engine to the X-Plane platform for the firsttime. Using a hybrid weather depiction interface through X-Plane 11'sweather API, a realistic, high-performance and high-fidelity weatherexperience is realized." As you have read by now, HiFi Sim Tech have been around for quitesome time and have refined their product extensively while developingfor MSFS and Prepar3D. Now all that expertise has been brought toX-Plane for us all to enjoy. Currently, ASXP is only available for the Windows platform. Mycomputer setup that I used to test the software is as follows: CPUi7-2600K OC'd 3.9 GHz, 32 GB DDR3 RAM, GPU Gigabyte GTX1070 G1. I havethe latest Nvidia drivers, using X-Plane 11.31. So, how does it all work? Well, let me guide you through myexperience of being a newb to Active Sky XP. InstallationInstallation was, for me, a breeze. I honestly don't think I readthe installation instructions, I just ran the installer. Of note, youmust create an account with HiFi Sim Tech to use this product. It isstraightforward for anyone that has similar experience with productsrequiring a persistent internet connection in order to use them. Wheninstalling the product, you have the option to install additionaltextures - I did not elect to install them as I am minding the size ofthe installation against my available HDD capacity. With the setupcomplete (by the way, ASXP has a thorough set of instructionscontained in a PDF) it was time to fly! Operation /images/reviews/asxp/1.jpgYou will find two icons on your desktop. The main icon should beobvious, and the secondary icon is for the web application. I was ableto open the web application from my desktop in order to check it out,but I was unable to open it on my mobile devices. Contained within theinstruction manual are details on how to get the web applicationoperational on your home LAN. It is a bit involved with configurationof your router, opening a specific port in order to allowcommunication with the ASXP software. Double clicking on the main icon brings you the following loadingscreen. /images/reviews/asxp/t/2.jpgI have elected to set the auto-login feature, because why elsewould you click on the icon except to load the software. /images/reviews/asxp/t/3.jpgOnce the software loads, you are brought to the above screen, theHOME tab. If you load ASXP before you load X-Plane, the software willindicate it isn't connected to the simulator software by showing textin orange beside the 'connection' status and a broken chain icon inthe top bar of the software window. When the simulator is running andconnected, you will see the screen as presented above. The instructionmanual provides excellent descriptions of the functions containedwithin the submenus, I highly recommend reading it to get the most outof your experience using ASXP. FlyingFortunately, or unfortunately depending on your perspective ofideal flight conditions, my current geographical location and seasonseems perfect to experience what ASXP has to offer. I loaded upX-Plane 11.31, selected a favorite aircraft (X-Hangar Aerostar 700)and set the airport to CYHM John C. Munro International Airport. Sinceit's winter here in Canada, the METAR didn't disappoint: 23022G30KT8SM -SN DRSN BK023 BK037 M19/M24 A2989. Yep, it's winter here. I departed and climbed up to FL240, climbing up through the cloudlayers and precipitation. The visual effect were as I expected, normalX-Plane clouds and precipitation (see Features and Limitations forinformation about the Active Sky replacement textures). Simulatorframe rates didn't appear to suffer too much; I saw 20-30 fps in theclimb, and at cruise over 30 fps. When I was nearing the top of climb, I wondered to myself "how do Iknow that it's working correctly?" This thought put me on the trail ofwhere the weather file is stored (in the X-Plane root folder) and howI can verify it's working. I opened the X-Plane Flight menu andselected the Weather option in order to test my theory. /images/reviews/asxp/t/7.jpg /images/reviews/asxp/t/6.jpgLooking at the first of the two images above, notice the WeatherMode field at the bottom left corner of the X-Plane program; it reads"from custom METAR (.rwx) file. This should indicate that ASXP is providing the weather for thesimulator. If you wish to verify it's using the correct .rwx file, select "Load new METAR" beside the Weather Mode field and select theMETAR.rwx file in the X-Plane 11 root folder. Looking at the second of the two images above, notice the WeatherMode field says "Match Real World Conditions". This indicates that thedefault X-Plane weather engine is taking care of the weatherbusiness. Now, compare the differences between the information in thetwo images regarding the cloud layers and wind layers. The differences might not immediately jump out at you, but it doesshow that ASXP is doing its job. The gusty winds at the variousflight levels provided some light turbulence, which didn't overwhelmthe sim flying experience and added just the right amount ofrealism. To finish up the flight, I returned to CYHM, descended for a cloudbreak as the reported ceiling was 2500' and performed a visual arrival(hah!) at Hamilton airport. The local visibility wasn't stellar, butit was at least VFR. FeaturesSo what else does this magical program do for you besides throwweather at you? Here are a few of the other tab menus (for completeinformation on the features and operation of ASXP, please refer to theincluded instruction manual). Map - weather map with options for different overlays of a widevariety of information, including real time tracking of your aircraftin the simulator environment. /images/reviews/asxp/t/8.jpgConditions - detailed information about the current atmosphericconditions your aircraft is experiencing in the sim. /images/reviews/asxp/t/9.jpgFlight Plan - Would you like to go on a long distance trip? Here'swhere you can plan the trip, which will facilitate the use of the nexttab... /images/reviews/asxp/t/10.jpgBriefing - Remember that trip you planned in the Flight Plan tab?Well here you can receive a weather briefing based on your Flight Planas entered. /images/reviews/asxp/t/11.jpgSearch - Are you looking for some thunderstorms to chase withhurricane hunter aircraft? Here you can search the database of weatherstations for the specific kind of flight conditions you wish toexperience. /images/reviews/asxp/t/12.jpgConclusionI must say that my experience using Active Sky XP; discovering allthe features available to tailor the weather experience in thesimulator, was exciting! As I got acquainted with the program, itbecame apparent to me that twenty years of developing, refining, streamlining and adding features to the program, really shonethrough. The practical application of this program occurred to me aswell, in terms of enhancing the experience when utilizing thesimulator for real-world training. Now the question of "Should I buy this software enhancement forX-Plane, is it worth it?" I would say it's worth it - it's a highly polished product, providing enhanced weather engine features above and beyond what isavailable in the default X-Plane weather controls. If you are satisfied with the default weather engine, that's OK too(not everyone enjoys flying through inclement weather and would ratherstay in the sunshine with calm winds). You'll miss out though, on thedynamic weather experience provided by Active Sky XP. /images/reviews/asxp/asxp.jpgThanks for reading.
