When installing the VC10 from FSPilotShop, youare given an unlock key and a ZIP file. The ZIP file only contains asole item, the aircraft installer itself. Run this file, select yourchosen simulator, input your unlock key, and the rest of the installwill be completed. Once installed, the Just Flight folder will appear in your FSX rootdirectory. Within it is a folder entitled 'VC10 Jetliner' whichincludes a 76-page PDF document, a tutorial flight folder and a paintkit allowing users to add their own liveries on top of the ones thathave been provided. Exterior ModelThe exterior modelling of the VC10 looks fantastic. Just Flight puta lot of detail into the aircraft through the use of a very detailedmodel and bump mapping throughout. /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403105659_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403110021_1.jpgOne thing everyone remembers about the VC10 was the shape of it,smooth, elegant and smart. This really comes across in the Just Flightmodel as looking at the aircraft you can see how the nose of theaircraft is shaped along with the vertical stabiliser, with the frontportion of it rounding off fairly far forward into the body. The fourengines are also accurately mounted with the cowling each holding twoengines, with a vent at the top and bottom of engines one and four forthe reverse thrust exhaust to slow the aircraft down. (The VC10 onlyhad two engines capable of reverse thrust, engines one and four. Theseinclude a vent for the thrust to escape, and a small hatch that closesto stop creating forward thrust.) I personally really like the detailing on the wings of thisaircraft. Each individual slat, flap and structural strut has beenmodelled, giving us a very nice looking model. Raising the speedbrakes also reveals some more details within the wing such as thehydraulics lifting the panel up and some more of the structure andsupport beams inside. You can also see a single row of passenger seats by the windows,with a texture then behind that showing the interior of a plane. It'sa rather simple way of doing this, and a rather obvious one too,making it a bit of a gimmick with this aircraft. You get a fullyfunctional cockpit and flight engineer bay, as well as a modelled(albeit non-functional) navigator's panel. /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403104853_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403105027_1.jpgDetails are included all over the cockpit thanks to the assistanceof bump mapping and weathered textures. My only criticism of the cockpit would be the night textures whichwill switch from dark to light with no gradual change. Compared to thereal aircraft, the lights provided are also completely different towhat the VC10 had in the real world with an orange glow onlysurrounding the gauges rather than the entire aircraft. I have also noticed on weaker systems that the cockpit does lagsomewhat, meaning a higher spec PC than the minimum requirement willdefinitely help you out. Likewise lowering your 'Scenery Complexity'within the simulator settings. There isn't too much to complain about however, you can definitelygain some joy by flying in the virtual cockpit. Do note however that there is no 2D panel, but this isn't somethingI'd particularly say is too much to miss out on knowing that a numberof aircraft these days will only include a 3D cockpit. /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403104835_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403105043_1.jpgButtons, Gauges And FunctionalityOne thing I want to get out of the way is the weather radar. JustFlight seem to believe that in order to compensate for anon-functional weather radar, they can put a texture in the place ofthis. I personally would much rather an 'inop' sticker or just a blankpanel, as this really kills the immersion in my opinion and just triedto show off more than it really needs to, especially depending on whatweather you fly in. (What's the point of adding something that doesn'twork and therefore takes away from the product by showing the worldthat it doesn't work?) Now that that's been said, the functionality of the cockpit isgreat! As mentioned before, all panels but the navigator's bay arefunctional with switches all doing their correct jobs. The engineer'sbay is also something quite special as it does give you full controlof the aircraft from the back seat (including throttle levers!). Theysay that flying is a two-man job, but in this case, the aircraftdefinitely makes you feel that a third person is involved. /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403104747_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403104823_1.jpgThe same sort of functionality can also be found on the centerconsole, overhead and instrument panels. The majority of the switcheswork, meaning you do have the ability to complete full checklistsof the VC10 (starting and flight procedures are all explained in thePDF manual). There are however one or two switches on these panels, such as theaileron upset, which has no functionality at all. These are rarethough, meaning you don't miss out on a lot of this aircraft. This add-on is definitely not high-fidelity as some parts of theaircraft can feel a little bare. Just Flight however have releasedthis as a part of their Jetliner series, putting it in the middle ofstudy-level and their F-Lite series, but it's safe to say that afairly advanced pilot could load up this aircraft and would feel rightat home behind the controls. I personally do really like the functionality that this add-ongives you. If there is a way to remove the weather radar, then thiswould be a sound representation of the real aircraft giving you lotsto look at and a massive workload on top of that! Despite limited access to the aircraft with it beingout of service, Just Flight have managed to find a good sample ofConway 550 sounds thanks to the assistance of Benoit Plamondon. Different sound samples include the engines at different spoolstages, startup and shutdown, as well as a number of dynamic soundssuch as landing gear movement and flap motors. My only concern is thata number of switches do not have sounds included within the virtualcockpit, but this is something that is currently being rectified andwill be updated as soon as this is fixed. Note: As of March 9, 2018 the switch sound issue has been rectifiedand all now functions as it should. Now that this issue has been resolved, I can definitely say thatthis add-on definitely feels a lot more complete and just gives theVC10 that extra bit of life when flying it! /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403105511_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403110301_1.jpgFlight DynamicsI personally have not had the pleasure of flying a VC10 in the reallife, but I have a feeling that the Just Flight VC10 gives you anaccurate representation of how this aircraft would fly. The aircraft may not be the most agile, but the one thing that theVC10 was definitely known for is speed. With the ability to cruise atMach 0.91, it was the fastest subsonic commercial aircraft everbuilt. Its large wings also mean that this aircraft LOVES to pitch up!Trimming is very much key with this aircraft, as not doing socorrectly means you are fighting the aircraft from essentiallydoing flips in the air. Despite the engines being tail-mounted, one thing that thisaircraft is missing is deep stall. This is where you pitch the nose ofthe aircraft too high, leading to disrupted airflow from the wings tothe engines. This results in a loss of thrust from the engines asthere is no air flowing through them. This means that the pilot incommand also has the added factor of focusing on their pitch asover-rotation could end in disaster for the flight. The VC10 howeverhad such large wings mounted towards the rear of the aircraft(essentially below the engines) meant that this was a rare occurrencewith the aircraft meaning you can see why they decided not to add thisfeature. /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403110313_1.jpg /images/reviews/justvc10/t/20180403110709_1.jpgTakeoff speed (VR) is around 160 knots depending on weight andweather factors, with landing speed between 132 to 123 knots. Thestall speed of the VC10 is a rather low - 160 knots in normalconfiguration or 100 knots when in landing configs. This is also verymuch helped by the massive wings built to keep the aircraft in theair. Opinion and Closing RemarksSince first flying the VC10, I've definitely enjoyed the eleganceand speed of the aircraft as I cruise at near supersonic speeds. Thereisn't too much I could find wrong on this aircraft, other than theweather radar of course, but this is something that Just Flight havebeen doing for a little while now. You also cannot argue with the pricing at $37.99. With it, you aregetting an aircraft you can fly for hours on end transatlantic andtranscontinental, with enough functionality that could keep the mostadvanced pilots on edge with the management of a flight engineer'spanel. This aircraft I would definitely say is one for the heritage pilotwho likes their older aircraft or someone like myself who isinterested in the early days of jet commercial flight. Just Flightrecently have been releasing a lot of these classic first and secondgeneration jets, and out of all of the ones I have flown, the VC10 isup there with the better ones they have done.
