/images/notams/notams21/posc1218.jpgThe last technology blog post was published in May of 2020, andwhat a long journey it has been for our team since then! Thankfullythat long arduous development journey has come to an end and userswill be able to benefit from our hard work. I want to start off by answering some common questions and clearingmisconceptions. Is POSCON dead? Absolutely not! We are very much alive and well! We may not seem like a major player in the online flight simulationnetwork arena right now, but rest assured that our technology is farsuperior to that of our peers and we will be a significant force toreckon with in the near future. So, where have you been? The short answer is, we have been here all along. . . quietly developing. As a result of feedback from early beta testers, we took thedrastic step of essentially shutting down POSCON's forward progress inorder to rewrite the voice software. This decision was made when werealized that the voice software was not going to be able to sustainour projected growth using the protocol it was developed touse. Making a change to the protocol basically required a completerewrite, which I am pleased to report is now complete. The good news is that the rewrite only occupied one developer forpast last year. While he worked tirelessly to bring users a bettervoice experience, our other developers have been making significantfeature upgrades to their components. I am going to take some time tohighlight those major developments later in this post. Why haven't you posted development updates over the past year? To answer this question, we need to address two major issues in theflight simulation community: the hype train mentality and the copyingproblem. The hype train mentality. A very common tendency in the flightsimulation community is to over-hype a product. Some developers dothis on purpose by dropping little nuggets of information or photos onsocial media regarding a new and exciting product they are working onin order to build hype, then one of two things happens; either theproduct never gets released (it was vaporware all along) or theproduct is released, but does not live up to the hype. This communityloves to ride the hype train and it is not something that the POSCONteam thinks is a professional approach to software development andmarketing. We don't want to build up hype around a product thatdoesn't live up to expectations. We feel it is better to stay quietand develop rather than to make promises we cannot keep. The copying problem. No, I am not referring to the people who liketo pirate software (and yes, that is a problem too). What I amreferring to the issue of other developers/networks (you know who youare) taking our great ideas and benefiting from them. This issomething Robert Randazzo of PMDG actually brought up in his recentinterview with Jeff Turner over at Sky Blue Radio in regards to GlobalFlight Operations. I couldn't agree more. Competition is a greatthing, but competition means being innovative and developing newideas.Anyway, enough of my rant. . . but those are the main reasons weare careful not to provide too many details about what we are workingon now. Okay, so what are you willing to share? First, I think it is important to point out that all recent updatesto our software can be found in the changelogs which are located onthe POSCON HQ. I certainly have no intention of covering everythingthat has changed over the past last year, so I encourage all users tobrowse through the logs if you are interested in learning more. More...

/images/notams/notams18/vats0723.jpgJoint Statement from the VATSIM Founders & Board of GovernorsDear VATSIM Members, We wanted to take a moment to address the reports and speculationthat have been circulating in the flight simulation community over thepast few days. Recently, a group of individuals made an unsolicitedproposal to VATSIM's Founders to acquire VATSIM for free. VATSIM'sFounders have declined this proposal. While there has been a lot of public discussion the past few daysabout what this proposal may or may not have entailed, in the end thiswas merely a group of individuals who are attempting to get peoplespeculating and to otherwise accept their vision of the future. VATSIMdoes not share this vision. The cash investment that has been widely publicized would not havetaken place until after this group had seized control of VATSIM. Thisproposal would have acquired you, our fellow VATSIM members along withall records, statistics, intellectual property and all other assetsthat thousands upon thousands of people have worked to create over thepast 17 years. The Founders of VATSIM have full confidence in the Board ofGovernors, who collectively have decades of experience in the flightsimulation community, ensuring VATSIM's continued success in thefuture. They are being joined by new colleagues who are filling longvacant positions and are bringing new ideas to the table which willfundamentally change the way VATSIM software development is done. As VATSIM's leadership, we owe you answers and a firm commitment tothe future of our community. We can assure you that the future ofVATSIM does not lie with another organization. The Board of Governorshas been tasked by the Founders and its members to outline the futureof VATSIM. Technology improvements are our number one priority. We currentlyhave a new voice codec in development with increased clarity andreduced latency. Our future goals include a complete rewrite of theback-end software to provide a modern and vastly improved networkexperience for all members. We are listening to your feedback and exploring global initiativesto ensure our new pilots, who are crucial to our growth, are providedwith the tools and education to make the most of their experienceswith our controllers and fellow pilots. We want to ensure VATSIM remains the biggest and best internationalonline flying network. We are opening our traditionally closeddevelopment process as we believe that our members can and willdeliver new technology that will take your VATSIM experience to thenext level. We're also reviewing how the organization operates toensure it remains truly community led: after all, you, the members, are what makes VATSIM truly special. vatsim.net

/images/notams/notams18/posc0728.jpgPOSCON, or Positive Control Network, has claimed to be the nextgeneration flight simulation network -- more modern and superior tonetworks like IVAO and VATSIM. They just made an interesting, thoughkind of vague, announcement via Facebook: "POSCON is committed to advancing the development of online flightsimulation and has tendered an offer to acquire a well known onlineflight simulation network to inject $50,000 into its continueddevelopment" This apparently refers to VATSIM as the "well known network". VATSIMpresident Gunnar Lindahl has posted via their Facebook page that VATSIMdoes not yet have an official response to the apparent offer. This could be interesting to follow... poscon.net www.vatsim.net POSCON on Facebook VATSIM on Facebook

/images/notams/notams18/posc0728.jpgI am more than excited to announce that I am taking over thePositive Control Network (POSCON) project. So, what is POSCON? POSCON, or Positive Control Network is the nextgeneration flight simulation network. Designed from the ground up tocreate the ultimate modern day virtual flying/controlling network,POSCON takes a selection of the best people that the industry has tooffer, bringing them all in to one place to create, without exception, the best online network. If you want to learn more about POSCON and its features or getinvolved, you can visit the POSCON website for more information. poscon.net Source
