  2. /images/notams/notams22/heav1114/lancaster-1.jpgDesigner Aeroplane Heaven has announced that they are working on the Avro Lancaster for MSFS 2020. The Lancaster played a major role in the RAF operations during WWII. With the announcement they've provided a series of early development shots. /images/notams/notams22/heav1114/lancaster-2.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav1114/lancaster-3.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav1114/lancaster-4.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav1114/lancaster-5.jpgSource
  3. Hello, Does anyone have an update on the Aeroplane Heaven Concord for P3D? Thanks!
  4. /images/notams/notams22/APH-130-globe-swift-msfs.jpgAeroplane Heaven is pleased to bring the Globe Swift to MSFS 2020. Designed by R.S.Johnson in 1940, the Swift’s birth is not without its complexities. With the intervention of WW2, the design did not actually reach certification until May, 1946 when it had been the subject of several design modifications carried out by K.H. “Bud†Knox. In the late 40’s Globe was to become insolvent and Temco acquired the type certificate and went on to build further aircraft. Full production ceased in 1951 but spare parts and service items continued to be produced by Universal Aircraft Industries until 1979. This model is based on the original “A†version. 8. /images/notams/notams22/heav0617/chipmunk-1.jpgGet some tail-dragger practice in! The de Havilland Canada DHC-1 Chipmunk was designed and first flewin 1946. The design was developed to replace the venerable but ageingTiger Moth Bi-plane as a principal two-seat flight trainer. Dubbed"the poor man's Spitfire" the aeroplane is extremely well-balanced andflies beautifully. With just a tad of rudder input, correctly trimmedshe'll lift off by herself on takeoff. We have modeled both the T-10 long canopy and Canadian"Bubble"canopy versions. You can fly from either cockpit using justthe camera controls and the Instructor/Student pilots will swap outautomatically in either view. You have a choice of military orcivilian pilots and there's a good choice of liveries. we will also beincluding a plain texture livery for those who want to paint theirown. /images/notams/notams22/heav0617/chipmunk-2.jpgAs already mentioned the flight model has been fine-tuned toprovide a challenging but stable experience, ideal for getting intotail-draggers and remember, the DC-3 and the Lancaster are coming andthey are both tail-draggers, albeit large ones! Sounds are high-fidelity authentic Gypsy engine and all the cockpitsounds are there. Authored in WWise, the exterior sounds are therewhen the canopy is opened. We have also recorded the characteristicbang of the cartridge starter. Peter at Flight Manuals On-Line has kindly allowed us to include acopy of the genuine DHC-1 T10 pilot operating handbook. This generousoffer allows you to learn to fly the Chippie just as the original RAFstudent pilots would have done. It is also handy to understand theoperation of this aeroplane. 9. P-51D MustangPublisher: Aeroplane HeavenReview Author: Dale AshcroftSuggested Price: $35.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-01.jpgAircraft OverviewThe following is an extract from Wikipedia: The North American Aviation P-51 Mustang is an American long-range,single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber used during World War II andthe Korean War, among other conflicts. The Mustang was designed inApril 1940 by a team headed by James Kindelberger of North AmericanAviation (NAA) in response to a requirement of the British PurchasingCommission. From late 1943, P-51Bs and P-51Cs (supplemented by P-51Ds frommid-1944) were used by the USAAF's Eighth Air Force to escort bombersin raids over Germany, while the RAF's Second Tactical Air Force andthe USAAF's Ninth Air Force used the Merlin-powered Mustangs asfighter-bombers, roles in which the Mustang helped ensure Allied airsuperiority in 1944. The P-51 was also used by Allied air forces inthe North African, Mediterranean, Italian, and Pacifictheatres. During World War II, Mustang pilots claimed to havedestroyed 4,950 enemy aircraft. At the start of the Korean War, the Mustang, by then redesignatedF-51, was the main fighter of the United States until jet fighters, including North American's F-86, took over this role; the Mustang thenbecame a specialized fighter-bomber. Despite the advent of jetfighters, the Mustang remained in service with some air forces untilthe early 1980s. After the Korean War, Mustangs became popularcivilian warbirds and air racing aircraft. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-02.jpgPurchasingAt the time of this review, the aircraft is priced at a veryreasonable £27.43 ($35.95) which is great as you get a lot ofbang for your buck with this one. The purchase of the product wasquick and painless from the FlightSim.Com Store and with a downloadsize of around 2.1 GB. InstallOne thing that I have come to love of the new MSFS is the quick wayof manually installing a product, no more needing to run through anauto installer that sends the files to the correct location such as afolder for the aircraft, gauges, etc. Simply drag and drop into thecommunity folder and off you go. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-05.jpgDocumentationThe documentation included with the product is extensive anddetails everything that you need to know about how to operate thiswarbird. It includes: Aircraft specsCockpit layoutStart procedureTake-off procedureLanding procedureFeatures of the aircraftAddendumEnough to get you off the ground and enjoying the aircraft. CockpitThe cockpit is of course from an era when everything was steamdriven. Panning around the cockpit you can see the wear and tear whichadds a very much worn look to the aircraft. If we had the ability tosmell the cockpit you could almost get a whiff of the cordite thatwould fill the cockpit as the machine guns were fired. The viewsoutside of the cockpit vary depending on what phase of flight you arein. Whilst you are on the ground it can be difficult to see where youare going, which is what you would expect from a tail-dragger so it'sbest to try and lean out of the cockpit to see where you are going, easy to do if you have some sort of head tracking or use VR. Once youare up in the air, the views are fantastic; you can only imagine whatit must be like to see those wings on your shoulders in real life. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-04.jpgThe detail around the cockpit is lovely. You can see that thedeveloper has painstakingly tried to bring as much to the table aspossible. Visually the cockpit can only be described as a masterpiece, however with that said the aircraft is not study level so don't expectit to be complicated in terms of systems; I have never operated thereal aircraft so I couldn't accurately say how far off it is. Allswitches are 'flickable'. Having said that, Aeroplane Heaven have beenvery smart with using some of the more miscellaneous switches asfunctions to toggle options, such as changing from a gun site to amodern day GPS display. There is also a hidden panel that allows foryou to toggle the pilot, gun bay panels on the wings and so on. Overall the cockpit is lovely and really makes you feel you are atthe controls of something that will knock your socks off. ExternalsThe P-51D is such a beautiful looking machine. Whichever angle youcast your eye over her, she urges you to climb on that beautiful wingand perch yourself in a cockpit that is steeped in history. Thedeveloper has worked nothing short of wonders with the exquisitemodelling that is on display. Take a look in the undercarriage bays,it most definitely looks like the aircraft has been heavily usedthroughout its life. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-03.jpgIncluded are 16 liveries which represent various squadrons thatutilised the P-51 during its operational life as well as a few from themodern era. As you would expect with a workhorse that would have beenflying dangerous missions over Europe, the weathering of coursematches those hours in the air with dirt scuffs from the gun firing, the chips in the paint work, all of which adds to a lovely authenticlook which in turn adds to the experience. The model allows you to add either external fuel tanks which justrequire fuel to be placed in the external tanks via the fuel andpayload manager or you can have bombs attached, which again can beadded via the fuel and payload manager. Whilst the bombs can be added, they aren't functional but still adds to the look and feel of awarrior at your fingertips. Overall the external model is beautiful, she oozes elegance mixedwith a menacing bite - a true thoroughbred. Flight ModelSpeed - This is one of the things that springs to mind when youhave a minute to sit back and think about what this aircraft iscapable of. However, let's start before there with trying to get thisbeast off of the ground. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-06.jpgShe's hard work on the first couple of trips make no mistake. Youhave to edge the throttle forwards on the take-off roll and hold thestick back, almost touching your gut. This locks the tail wheel inplace so you can try and hold her steady as you hurtle down therunway. The reason you edge the throttle forward is to ensure youdon't go careening off the runway which is something I found out formyself on a number of occasions. Stick with it, be patient and you'llget there. If however you do get frustrated, there is a switch in thecockpit that allows for this to be skipped and makes for a much easiertake-off run - but where's the fun in that? Once you are airborne, she can quickly get away from you if you donot reign the throttle back you can soon be heading towards 400 knots, but this does allow you to climb to altitude rapidly. Having all thispower is great for when you want to fly a few aerobatic sequences. Ifyou ever find yourself in trouble you can always (most of the time)power your way out of it. During the stages in the circuit, it's important to keep the poweron as you add the stages of flaps. If you aren't careful the aircraftcan start to sink and no matter how much you pull the stick back, youwon't recover. The throttle is your friend and you shouldn't forgetthat. Overall, the flight model is beautiful. If this is only a fractionof what the real aircraft flys like then we are lucky to have theability to simulate that. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-07.jpgSoundsIn many ways the sounds can speak for themselves. Those that arereading this have probably either seen a Mustang fly in real life orvia video, so in your mind you already have a concept of what itshould sound like vs what it actually does sound like. This engine purrs whilst you sit at idle with a gentle hum andrattle. She urges you to push the throttles forward and listen to thatmagnificent engine roar into life. Sounds are very subjective as alarge part of what you experience is down to your setup. I personallyuse headphones which leaves no room for the sound to go other thatinto your ear and I really think that I benefit from that. Both insideand out, she sends goose bumps down my spine when you 'give it thebeans', the roar is incredible. Whilst you don't get the same sense offeeling the sound, much like you would do if you were stood next tothe real thing, you do get some sense of experiencing somethingspecial that you just can't bear to switch the sim off. /images/reviews/heavmust/t/aeroplane-heaven-p51d-08.jpgVRVR is an interesting area to talk about. More and more people areslowing migrating over, as I did a few years ago and I haven't lookedback since. I use the Oculus Rift with plenty of joy. Sitting in thecockpit in VR is amazing, you feel so confined to a fairly roomycockpit compared to other aircraft of the time such as theSpitfire. Having that ability to truly immerse yourself in such anaircraft is incredible. Unfortunately there is a good chance I willnever get to fly a real Mustang, the lack of a pilot's license beingone of the primary reasons, so this goes a long way to fulfilling adream of being able to put myself at the controls of a warbird. VR isa game changer for everyone that uses it, and using the Mustang in VRis incredible. The same phrase can be said for this aircraft, she is anabsolute work of art. She has a firm place on my flight line, and sheshould on yours too. I don't believe in giving 10/10 as it impliesthat you have reached the pinnacle and it can't be improvedupon. Given how fast this developer is pushing boundaries every time anew product comes out means I cannot give it a 10/10 but I can give itas close as you can get to that. Originally designed as part of a proposal to design acompletely new fighter from ground up the P51 saw a number of rolesduring the second world war and in fact well into the 50’s and theadvent of the jet age. The P-51 was not without its problems. In particular the earlierversion suffered from a problem with vision especially to the rear anda lackluster performance. This was remedied with a bubble canopy andthe addition of the Merlin engine. First seeing action with the RAF, the American armed forces were totake up the majority of the use during latter stages of WW2. Merlinpowered Mustangs were to start their first of many missions to escortlong range bombers in mid-December 1943. The P-51D’s were to provesuperior to the premier German fighters of the time, the Me-109 andthe Fw-190. About 13,000 Merlin powered Mustangs were produced in the UnitedStates. They continued to serve past WW2's end and some were even usedin a ground attack role during the Korean War. They last saw combat inthe 1969 "Soccer War". Now they can be found either in racing guise oras highly restored examples at airshows throughout the world. /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-2.jpgInnovative FeaturesAll new hi-fidelity models with superb detail including gun bays and gear wellsBeautifully crafted exterior and interior models built over contemporary detailed plans and drawingsAuthentic cockpit detail includes many bespoke animations and effectsFull PBR materials and textures include realistic "pillowing" of metal surfacesAnimated authentic U.S. military pilot figure + your choice to remove for asobo stock pilotSpecially animated, realistic undercarriage operation and the famous hydraulic droopChoice of classic or modern radiosHighly accurate flight dynamics and performance based on real flight testsSpecially authored WWise Hi-Fidelity sound packageUnique code to "iron" out poor simulator tail-dragger performanceLoadouts and external tanks based on weight /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-3.jpg18 Authentic LiveriesThe package includes a variety of colorful liveries from WW2 fighter squadrons and 3 civilian registered versions. /images/notams/notams22/heav0508/p51d-4.jpgPurchase Aeroplane Heaven - North American P-51D Mustang For MSFS v1.2.0 See other Aeroplane Heaven products
  11. /images/notams/notams22/heav0322.jpgWe are making this post in an attempt to halt the amount ofrequests/demands for updates on this release. We need to clarify a fewpoints. 1) No, it has not been cancelled. 2) We are waiting on flight modelling which is being programmedout-of-house using significant flight test data from the period. Thistakes time and a lot of effort, given that the goalposts keep movingwith continual upgrades to the sim. 3) When we have the fight model we can get the sounds finalisedwhich are being professionally engineered, again, out-of-house. We have received many requests for release dates which we justcannot estimate - there is no point - we are in the hands ofprofessional suppliers. The number of suppliers in this field hasshrunk considerably since the introduction of MSFS and they are allextremely busy. We would appreciate that people give us due patience as we attemptto produce this important addition to the very best of ourability. Yes it has taken a little over a year so far which is nothingcompared to a few other productions going on elsewhere. More importantly, we would also appreciate a halt to the abusive, insulting mails and comments we have been getting. We have done no-oneharm or taken money. We have simply taken time to get this oneright. We do NOT deserve the vitriolic abuse we have been subjected toby "school-kids" who want their toys now. We will continue to release updates and further information on the DC-3 build and its release as appropriate. 14. Supermarine Spitfire Mk1APublisher: Aeroplane HeavenReview Author: Michael HaywardSuggested Price: $32.95/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.png /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-4.jpgThe Supermarine Spitfire is regardedby many as the aircraft that won the war over the skies of Britainduring WWII. Known for its agile and nimble flying, it closely foughtagainst the Messerschmitt Bf 109 throughout the Battle of Britain andinto France. Aeroplane Heaven has been developing flight simulator add-ons since2001, focusing mainly on WWII military prop aircraft, as well as somegeneral aviation and jetliners. They are well-known for theirhigh-quality models, and this is something they aim to bring toMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2020. The Supermarine Spitfire is one of Aeroplane Heaven's newestreleases for MSFS, and in this review I will be giving my thoughts onhow this iconic aircraft performs. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-2.jpgAircraft SpecificationCrew: 1Length: 29ft 11in (9.12m)Wingspan: 36ft 10in (11.23m)Height: 11ft 5in (3.48m)Empty Weight: 5,065lbs (2,297kg)Maximum Takeoff Weight: 6,700lbs (3,039kg)Powerplant: Rolls-Royce Merlin 45Aircraft PerformanceRange: 479mi (771km, 416nmi) Rate of Climb: 2,600ft/min (13m/s)Service Ceiling: 36,500ft (11,100m)Max Cruising Speed: 320kts (600km/h, 370mph) /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-1.jpgDownload And InstallInstallation from the FlightSim.Com Store is a simpleprocess. After purchase, you download a zip file that contains theaircraft file. Drag and drop this into your Microsoft Flight Simulator'Community' folder and the aircraft is then ready to fly! Included is a 13-page document that goes into detail about thehistory of the Spitfire and some of the missions it flew, as well as adetailed layout of the cockpit and a checklist for you tofollow. There is also a 63-page document including real-worldschematics of the aircraft as well as scans of the original pilotnotes for aerobatics. This is a welcomed addition to this add-on,giving you a lot of insight into the real-world operation of theSpitfire, with detail on its optimum flying state which you can applyto the simulator. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-6.jpgExterior ModelThe model of the Spitfire is incredibly detailed and looks veryclose to that of the real thing. The body of each aircraft also includes some weathering; scuffs andmarks where the airframe has been damaged or hasty repairs have beenmade. The layout on the wings where pilots and crew climb to accessthe cockpit has also been worn down, with paint being replaced withbare metal and dirt. Animations on the aircraft are also really well-defined, with flapsand ailerons moving at a slightly different pace, as well as the delaybetween the two landing gear as they drop and raise. A lot of carehas been put into every detail of this aircraft, making it a joy tolook at when flying. Aeroplane Heaven have also made use of some light crash modellingtoo. If you tip the nose over on landing or forget to lower your gear(as was the case with a few early Spitfire pilots) the propellers willbend out of shape and your engine output will completely drop. It's asmall extra detail, but one that adds increased realism to theaircraft. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-7.jpgThe Spitfire comes with nine different liveries, seven from WWII, amodern restored livery and an unpainted alloy shell. These are alldone to a very high resolution and include a lot of detail across thebody, with panel gaps, rivets, and decals being visible, along withclearly defined text. Cockpit And FunctionalityThe cockpit of the Spitfire was a cramped ordeal, with aircraftsystems and gauges surrounding you. Aeroplane Heaven has accurately recreated the inside of thecockpit, with all switches and levers functional to that of the realthing. The control layout is relatively simple, with your main gaugesin front of you, engine systems to your left and hydraulic managementto your right. You can change the weapon armament between 'Safe' and'Fire', however as far as I can tell, the machine gun is non-functioning. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-3.jpgDuring steep dives in the Spitfire, I have noticed that the gaugestend to lock up. This would be accurate with any light prop aircraft,as a high number of G's will cause the gauges to stick at the lastposition they were at. When on the ground too, the engine vibrationswill also cause the gauges and dials to also shimmer a little. One thing you note with the Spitfire is the speedometer is measuredin Miles Per Hour, as opposed to Knots. This presumably comes before atime when speed units were standardised in aviation, and with theBrits using MPH to measure speed, this became a standard in theSpitfire. Altitude and vertical speed are still measured in feet. Textures are once again done to a very high level of quality andlook great when viewing the gauges up close. The Spitfire was built inbulk and went through some of the toughest flying in its era, so it'swonderful to see that the cockpit was full of minor weatheringimperfections. Some of these included scratches along gauge panels orflakes of paint missing on the levers. This helps in bringing theaircraft to life with minor details that add life to the cockpit. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-5.jpgYou also find smaller details too, such as a working harnessrelease switch that changes the state of your aircraft from the air tothe ground, as well as a detailed cockpit hatch that lets you operateit from two places, the spring release on your left and the canopyopen on your roof. One bonus for those of you lucky enough to own a 3D printer (plus abit of technical knowledge), is a 'build your own' Spitfire enginemanagement system with throttle quadrant, engine boost, trim and gearlever, courtesy of Aeroplane Heaven andAuthentiKit.This is designed to work with the Spitfire to give you the mostauthentic experience possible, it's something I certainly wouldn'tmind trying out for myself in the future! SoundEverybody knows the iconic sound of the Merlin engine, andAeroplane Heaven have it spot on! /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-8.jpgThe first thing I was struck by when loading the aircraft up forthe first time was the wonderful purr of the Rolls Royce Merlin atidle. This only gets better when slowly applying throttle as theSpitfire roars into life. I live reasonably close to an RAF base within the UK whichfrequently gets Spitfire and Hurricane fly-bys during annual events,so I have been fortunate enough to get a good sense of what thisaircraft sounds like. I found myself on a couple of occasions switching over to Drone Camand placing myself on the ground, only to swoop in on my position tohear the engine at full blast as I fly by. Audio for buttons, switches, and mechanical movements such as flaps and gear have alsobeen recorded and implemented, creating a very authentic experiencewhen flying the aircraft. During flight, as you bring the aircraft into a series of dives, the engine will speed up beyond your full-throttle setting and at thesame time start to increase its pitch. It is during this phase offlight that you will hear the iconic Spitfire Merlin roar, somethingusually heard during fly-bys and air shows. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-9.jpgWhen it comes to audio in a flight simulator add-on, it issomething that can make or break a product if done well orpoorly. Aeroplane Heaven has excelled in this, sampling audio from thereal aircraft to accurately recreate the sound from one of the mosticonic aircraft ever made. Flight DynamicsThe Spitfire feels good to fly. It's a nimble little aircraft thatcan get itself out of some tight situations. It only requires lightmovement of the stick to keep the aircraft steady, with biggermovements there for aerial evasion when you find yourself incombat. The Spitfire can also handle relatively steep climbs and sharpdrops, but try not to over speed the airframe as your controls willlock up as the airflow around your flight surfaces become too fast. When taking off, it is advised you leave the flaps up. By droppingthem into the first setting, you had to ensure you were flying atleast 120mph to raise the flaps again, otherwise you risked stallingthe aircraft out. Be sure to only put minor corrections into therudder too, as too much and you'll find yourself drifting to oneside. During my initial flights with the Spitfire, I found myselfleaving the runway and dragging onto the grass - a result of being tooaggressive with the rudder on takeoff. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-10.jpgLanding the Spitfire does take a bit of flight management, as themoment you deploy the flaps you lose all speed, and the aircraftbecomes a lot heavier to manage. I found myself often using fullthrottle to keep myself steady on approaches to minimise the risk ofstalling out before the runway. Opinion And Closing RemarksI must admit, I have been blown away by the Spitfire and how wellit has been recreated in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Aeroplane Heavenhave put a lot of care into this model, and it shows with one of themost realistic prop aircraft experiences I've used on this platform. The Spitfire looks good, feels good and sounds tremendous. It's amodel that's full of life and does a fine job of putting you in thecockpit, or as I found myself constantly doing, sitting on the groundand waiting for it to fly past me. The audio of this aircraft alone issomething worth shouting about. /images/reviews/heavspit/t/aeroplane-heaven-spitfire-11.jpgIf you're looking for a WWII warbird or just have an interest inBritish World War history, then picking up the Spitfire is certainlyworth doing! Even if it's for the in-depth manual and reading materialit comes with, you are sure to learn a lot about the operation of theSpitfire and how pilots managed it throughout the Battle ofBritain. 16. /images/notams/notams22/heav0203.jpgAfter much deliberation we have taken the decision to halt alldevelopment for FSX and P3D (all versions). It is not a decision wehave taken lightly but we feel now is the time to focus on the newsimulator. As a result we have also decided to make all our FSX/P3D productsfree to download. We have arranged with Orbx to carry the freetitles. We are currently arranging with our vendors to remove the productsfrom their inventories. This may take a little while. So, if you are considering purchasing an FSX or P3D product from usor one of our vendors, don't! Wait for Monday the 7th of February anddownload whatever you are after, absolutely free! Also, some good news for anybody having already bought an AH FSX orP3D product since January 21st 2022. You are entitled to a full refundfrom your vendor by presenting your receipt or order number. 20. /images/notams/notams22/heav0112/aeroplane-heaven-lancaster-1.jpgFirst pics of our new and upcoming Avro Lancaster B mk1 forMSFS. This is the front turret and will hopefully give you an idea ofsome of the detail going into the model. Of interest may be the pic ofthe Browning shell-loading system. This is really just a wire with ahook on one end and a ring on the other. The gunner would thread thehooked end of the wire through the breech in the gun and out the otherside to pick up the clip of the first shell in a new load. Then bypulling on the wire he could feed the belted shells into thebreech. Maybe primitive, but it worked and allowed the gunner orground crew to quickly reload another 500 rounds in each gun. /images/notams/notams22/heav0112/aeroplane-heaven-lancaster-2.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav0112/aeroplane-heaven-lancaster-3.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav0112/aeroplane-heaven-lancaster-4.jpg /images/notams/notams22/heav0112/aeroplane-heaven-lancaster-5.jpgSource The Real Lancaster In Action
  21. /images/notams/notams22/heav0104/heaven-1.jpgIn 1936, the prototype XF3F-2 took to the air with a new WrightCyclone power plant, a top speed of 255 mph and a service ceiling of33,800 feet. The US Navy ordered 81 Grumman F3F-2 s in1937. Development problems in the design program for upcoming newmonoplane fighters led to an 'extension' of the useful career of theF3F and the production of the F3F-3 version for 1938. Apart from someminor aerodynamic improvements, these machines were practicallyidentical to the F3F-2. Affectionately nick-named "The Flying Barrel", pilots enjoyed theF3F-2 immensely reporting it as a 'joy to fly' being fast, immenselystrong and an agile performer. Snap rolls, tight turns and loops werecarried out with ease and the aeroplane could be put down in a perfectthree pointer at varying speeds and weight configurations.,/p> /images/notams/notams22/heav0104/heaven-3.jpgMany design features such as the complex action retractingundercarriage and 'tubby' fuselage would find their way into the newbreed of ship borne fighters, the legendary F4F Wildcats. A total of 140 F3Fs were still on squadron strength at the outbreakof hostilities and the rugged little fighters remained in service ascombat trainers, until as late as 1943. The "Flying Barrel" was not to see combat, being superceded by thenew generation of monoplane ship-board fighters, the Grumman F4FWildcat around the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. In 1936, aspecial Grumman F3F-1 was built by the factory for Major Alford “ Alâ€Williams, head of aviation for Gulf Oil Company and well-knownaerobatic display pilot. The aeroplane was flown as a demonstrator forGulf Oil (and Grumman) and appeared at air-shows and military displaysall over the U.S. before WW2. Called "Gulfhawk II" and powered by a 1000 hp version of theCyclone, the aeroplane displayed its aerobatic capabilities, speed andstrength to great effect. So much so that the airframe was not retireduntil 1948 when Williams flew it on its final flight to Washington, after which it was to take its rightful place in the now SmithsonianNational Air and Space Museum.
