  1. The usage of VR is steadily increasing, Norway has the most flight simulator enthusiasts per capita and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is still the most popular flight simulator software. These are some of the findings presented in the FlightSim Community Survey 2022. For the seventh consecutive year, Navigraph partnered with 35 major addon developers and organizations within the flight simulation community to organize the FlightSim Community Survey, the world's largest and most comprehensive survey of its kind. A total of 25,400 respondents contributed to this year's survey to help develop the flight simulation community. Virtual Reality Development The VR usage has been increasing steadily over the past two years according to the respondents. More than one in four now owns a VR headset, and over 62% of the VR owners use it for flight simulation. The most popular headset is the HP Reverb G2, which is primarily used by more than 37% of the respondents. In 2nd place, we find the Oculus Quest 2 at almost 25%, followed by the Oculus rift Sat 12%. Popular Graphic Cards It is not a secret that flight simulators can be demanding when it comes to graphics card performance. With over 82%, Nvidia is clearly the most popular manufacturer of graphics cards among the respondents. This year, the RTX 3080 is the most popular graphics card used by17.2% of the Nvidia owners, followed by the RTX 3070 at 10.9%. When it comes to AMD, the Radeon RX 5700 XT is the most used AMD graphics card at 14.0%. The second most popular one is the RX 6900 XT, closely followed by the RX 6800 XT. Challenges Within Flight Simulation When asked about the hardest parts of flight simulation respondents rated Weight and Balance, Radio Communications and Power vs. Economy in cruise among the most challenging areas. The results also found some weaknesses in slow flight, control wheel steering, descent planning, and VNAV. Most Popular Flight Simulation Software This year, X-Plane 12 was launched, but Microsoft Flight Simulator2020 remains the most popular flight simulator software. The combat simulator DCS World is now in third place, pushing Prepar3D into fourth place. Prepar3D by Lockheed Martin is now in collaboration with Unreal Engine to create next generation simulations, and we will keep monitoring the development. Real Pilots And/or Simmers? During the past five years conducting the survey we have found that on average 27.1% of the respondents hold some sort of pilot license. On average, 9.6% of these hold a Private Pilot License, or a PPL. So, 1 in 4 have some sort of license, and 1 in 10 has a PPL. Out of the rest, 8.5% of the respondents are enrolled in flight school. Among the ones that were not flight students 25% are still considering taking real-world lessons within the next year. The main purpose of using the simulator seems to be more about having fun. Only 6% state that they use the flight simulator for training towards a pilot license. The majority, 49%, say that they use the simulator out of curiosity or just a general interest in aviation. 3. /images/notams/notams22/nmg1205.jpgIt is hard to believe that we have come to the end of another year, and it has been quite a year too! Our selection of airports forMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2020 has grown even more this year! Salesfor this new Flight Simulator has proven that it is a favourite amongnew users. This is also the time when we need to say goodbye to three FlightSimulator packages: Microsoft Flight Simulator X, Prepar3D v4 andX-Plane 10. These packages have served us well, but it is time to moveon. The airports we have designed for these packages will remain onsale via our website and we will continue to provide limited supportfor them, but there will be no more updates for these airports, or anynew airports designed for them. As a matter of fact, the last time wereleased any updates for these packages was two years ago! X-Plane 12 is still in early access, but as soon as it isofficially released, we will be adjusting our airports for thatplatform as well. From next year we will move forward with Microsoft Flight Simulator2020, Prepar3D v5 and X-Plane 11 and 12. The bulk of airports as wellas the majority of the updates will be for Microsoft Flight Simulator2020 as this is the platform that is the clear fan favourite amongusers. The number of sales generated by Microsoft Flight Simulator2020 overshadow all the other flight simulator packages we designairports for by far and it will be stupid for us to neglect such asopportunity! As for the festive season, we will be around to answer questionsand provide support, but obviously not on Christmas Day and New Year! Please expect responses on email to be slow from the 16thonwards. Bloemfontein Airport will be the last airport we will releasefor this year and we will not be starting any new projects until nextyear. Now there is only one thing left to do and that is to wish all ofyou a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! If you will be on theroads this year, then please drive carefully and stay safe. 8. /images/notams/notams22/xpla1025.jpgOverview of X-Plane 12 ATC ChangesThe Air Traffic Control (ATC) system in X-Plane 12 has had a majorre-vamp compared to that of X-Plane 11. This article will highlightsome of the major changes and point out some of the more subtle onesto try and give you an idea of what to expect. General New Features6 distinct regions (Asia, Australia, Euro, India, USA and Global)Male and female selectable pilot voicesReception strength varies with distance from the transmitter, and intervening terrainAI now wait for controller instructions to be spoken before obeying themOne of the major changes, which may also be one of the leastnoticeable, is that there is now a system of global regions replacingthe previous single global control region which modelled US-specificrules and messages. Having separate geographic regions means thatdifferent parts of the world can use voices that sound locallyappropriate, but more importantly regions can have distinct messagesand standards. To go with the regional variation in accents, thesystem now supports more than one voice per region, giving morevariation as well as both male and female voices. Male/femaleselectable voices are available for the pilot too, in the Soundsettings page. The quality of the received audio now takes the distance from the controller, relative altitude, the type of controller, and any blocking terrain into account. In other words, if you’re close to an airport with clear line of sight, you’ll get nice, strong, clear reception. If you’re miles away and flying low behind a ridge, you’ll struggle to hear what the controller is saying. When AI receive instructions from a controller they will now wait until the transmission is complete, rather than executing those instructions the instant the transmission starts. This is one of many small changes which don’t really affect anything functionally, but hopefully add to the realism and feeling of immersion. More...

  14. /images/notams/notams22/xpla0915.jpgWell, this has been a crazy couple of weeks. X-Plane 12.00 is nowavailable for Early Access – in other words, everyone can get X-Plane12. Over the next few weeks we will post more about ongoingdevelopment and get into some of the new features in depth – there’s aton to talk about in X-Plane 12. For today, here are just a few noteson some issues that have come up over the last few days. Beta 3 Coming Soon: Over the past weekend part of the team met inperson to do planning and roadmapping; beta 3 should be availableshortly, with some of the bug fixes we’ve already coded. X-Plane 12for Steam is in review — hopefully it will be available Real SoonNow™. About Early AccessX-Plane 12 has been in a private alpha test program with thirdparties since December (!) – almost nine months. During that time webuilt 38 (!) official alpha builds, recut the global scenery fivetimes, and committed over 4000 checkins to X-Plane’s source code (plusmore to the aircraft, scenery tools and art libraries). The alphaprogram included completion of major features, lots of debugging, andchanging the product in response to early alpha feedback. So why Early Access now? Not because X-Plane 12.0 is done – westill have over two hundred open bugs and a lot of things we want todo. X-Plane 12 is in Early Access so that the entire X-Plane communitycan be involved in X-Plane 12’s growth, not just a limited number oftesters. With X-Plane 12.0 in early access, we don’t have to say ‘no’ tousers and devs who want to get started with 12, and third parties canget their entire teams using the new sim and run their own testprograms. The 130,000square foot museum and learning center has ample space for more than2,000 attendees across two air-conditioned hangars. The facility isalso home to the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame and multiple aviationlearning exhibits, including certified Redbird flight training devicesthat will be available to attendees. "We couldn’t be more excited about this year's venue," saysorganizer and FSA co-founder Phil Coyle. "It's the perfect backdropfor the FlightSimExpo exhibit floor, and a fantastic city for aviationand aerospace fans like us!" Saturday, June 24 and Sunday, June 25 will be at the Lone Star Flight Museum. Nestled amongst warbirds, fighter jets, and drones, attendees will find hands-on flight simulation exhibits where they can try the latest in flight simulation software and hardware. Speaker rooms will feature how-to seminars, educational discussions, and announcements from some of simulation’s biggest developers. The area is one of America’slargest aerospace hubs: Houston is a hub for two major airlines,NASA's Johnson Space Center, Space Center Houston, and more. As inpast years, discounts on hotels, airfare, rental cars, and more willbe available to attendees.
