Repaint of the De Havilland Dash 8-100 DH8A model from Virtualcol FS Software team for LN-WIM, one of Widerøe Norway's active 100-series models as of January 2024. This repaint is of the new livery the company began introducing across the fleet around 2018. WIM is named for the Lofoten region, an archipelago and traditional district in the county of Nordland, Norway. As of early 2024 the aircraft could be seen operating between Norwegian Sea coastal locations like Alesund, Trondheim, Bodo and Bronnoysund, as well as out to smaller airports on the Lofoten peninsula like Leknes, Svolvær/Helle and Rost.

One of the most annoying things when flying VFR, spesially in familiar areas, are that big amount of auto generated trees in areas where it should'nt be any forest or just some scattered trees. The coast of Norway is well know for it's tough and weather-beaten coastline and there are barly any trees or forest close to the outer skarries and shorelines. This package excludes the autogenerated forest in northern parts of Norway. It's not as accurate as my Northwestern Norway Treefix, but if you dont like it, just delete it Installation: Just drop in the community folder. Ver 1.1.0 - Compiled with SDK 0.20.50 - This is the same package previously found on flightsim.to but compiled with the latest SDK. Ver 1.0.0 - Removed trees along the coastline from Hitra (Trøndelag) to the Russian border. - Removed trees from Stetind and surrounding mountains. - Compiled with SDK 0.14.1 Ver 0.3.0 - Buildt with SDK 0.14.0 for Sim update 1.18.15 compatibility. Ver 0.2.0 - Added the Lofoten islands and east side of Vestfjorden. Initial realease ver 0.1.0 - Covers the outer coast from Hitra to Bodø. Enjoy

Western Norway Treefix By CaptOle One of the most annoying things when flying VFR, spesially in familiar areas, are that big amount of auto generated trees in areas where it should'nt be any forest or just some scattered trees. The western coast of Norway is well know for it's tough and weather-beaten coastline and there are barly any trees or forest close to the outer skarries and shorelines. 15. Airport Oslo Gardermoen ENGMPublisher: AerosoftReview Author: Andrew ParishSuggested Price: $28.99/images/fsc/wbicons/store-buy-now-button.pngIt was January 9th, 2012, when Istepped off the airstairs onto the tarmac at gate 39 of Oslo'sGardermoen airport, having just arrived there at the start of a workassignment that was due to last three months. Being around nine in themorning, the winter sun had yet to rise, and the temperature was arather fresh minus 12 degrees Celsius (10.4 degrees Fahrenheit) -positively balmy for the time of year as I was to later discover. Iwas quite understandably wondering what I had let myself in for! In the event, the assignment lasted around 9 months and I passedthrough the airport as a passenger, either arriving or departing, almost 60 times. And so, when the opportunity arose to reviewAerosoft's 'Airport Oslo XP' scenery package, I jumped at the chance. As always, before taking a closer look at the scenery, it was timeto understand a little more about the history of the airport to gainsome pointers for the sorts of things to be looking out for. A Brief HistoryGardermoen has been the site of a military presence since 1740 whenit was first used by the Norwegian Army as a camp. The first flightfrom there took place in 1912 and Gardermoen became a station formilitary flights. During the Second World War, the German Luftwaffedeveloped the site with various hangars and two crossing runways,02/20 and 11/29, both over 2,000m long. After the war, the NorwegianAir Force took over the airport, and it became the main air stationwith three fighter and one transport squadron based there. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-10.jpgFigure 1 - Gardermoen in 1951 (courtesy of http://www.mil-airfields.de) Passenger traffic to Oslo and the East of Norway was originallyserved by Fornebu airport just 8 kilometres from the city centre whichhad opened shortly before the outbreak of World War 2. Multipleexpansions to Fornebu over the years saw Gardermoen, otherwise apredominantly military, training and GA airfield, see temporary usageduring periods of construction there, however it was in 1972 thatcharter traffic other than that operated by SAS and Braathens SAFE wasmoved from Fornebu to Gardermoen due to capacity constraints, and aformer hangar was converted into a terminal building on the west sideof the airfield. The whole future of Gardermoen changed in the 1980's. The finalexpansion to Fornebu, a larger terminal was built in 1983, but itbecame clear as quickly as 1988 that all international traffic wouldhave to move to Gardermoen although the decision regarding site was acontroversial one with two other sites at Hobol and Hurum having beenin the running at various points in the decision process. The decisionwas ratified through parliamentary legislation in August 1992. Over the next two years, the military presence at the airfield wasredeveloped, reducing its area from 120,000 to 41,000 square metres, whilst improving its functionality. A military presence remains atGardermoen in the form of the Royal Norwegian Air Force's 335-Squadronwhich operates its three Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraftthe military base directly to the north of the current passengerterminal. Reconstruction of the 'new' main airport commenced in August1994. The existing 'north-south' runway, having been recentlyrenovated by the Air Force, became what we now know as runway01L/19R. A parallel runway, 01R/19L, was constructed together with theterminal building and a serving railway in a little over 4 years, andGardermoen opened in October 1998. Since its opening (and since my last visit), a new pier stretchingnorth of the east-west terminal building was built to increasecapacity and this opened in 2017. The south pier to the south of thewest wing of the terminal building was built in 2012 to compensate forthe lost terminal capacity during construction, providing gates but noair-bridges for domestic flights. This pier was originally due to bedemolished after the new north pier opened but remains to this daysupporting an overall airport capacity of 32 million passengers peryear. As always when digging under the covers, there's a rich and variedhistory to be found, and I'm hoping that some of this will be evidentas I look around the airfield. Aerosoft's Oslo Airport scenery wasfirst released in 2017 when X-Plane 11 was in its infancy - indeed, Iwas offered the option to download a version for X-Plane 10 from theweb site. In scenery development terms, it's a bit of a throw-back andit will be interesting to see how it has stood the test of time. InstallationThe ~330Mb download from flightsim.com contains a single "CustomScenery" folder which can be copied directly to the folder of the samename in your X-Plane folder. This will create 3 sub-folders in on yourdrive which take around 930Mb of space. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-03.jpgFigure 2 - Aerosoft's Manual for their 'Airport Oslo' package The manual, whose cover is shown in Figure 2 - Aerosoft's Manualfor their 'Airport Oslo' packagetakes a little tracking down but can be found in a 'Documentation'folder contained within one of the three folders and it's an importantread as one of the first snippets of information it contains is newsthat the default ordering that X-Plane applies to the scenery foldersis not that which is required for the scenery to be displayedcorrectly. As such, some manual manipulation of the'scenery_packs.ini' file is needed to reverse the order of two of thefolders. Given that the default behaviour of X-Plane has for some time- and before the release of this package - been to add new sceneryfolders that it finds on start-up to the 'scenery_packs.ini' file inalphabetical order, that Aerosoft chose not to use names that forcedthe correct order by default is a little confusing. Included alongside the documentation is a set of charts for theairport but these are dated 2015 and 2016. A quick check against thecurrent charts available from Navigraph shows that whilst some of thedepartures and approaches from and to the airport remain current, manydo not, and depending on the navdata installed in the aircraft you'reflying you're probably better off looking at a more current source ofcharts. The minimum system requirements for the package reflect its vintageand are stated as requiring a dual core processor, 8Gb of RAM and aDirectX 11 compatible video card with a minimum of 512Mb of VRAM. Therecommended requirements are however somewhat more demanding askingfor at least a dual-core i5, 16-24Gb of RAM and a DirectX 12compatible video card with at least 4Gb of RAM. A system whosecomponents exceed the recommended requirements was used to capture theimages contained in this review, all of which were taken from theX-Plane 11 version. A Choice Of MeshThe scenery package ships with an underlying orthophoto and meshfor the airport and its immediate surroundings. Recognising that some users might have opted for a more detailedmesh of the surrounding area, Aerosoft shipped the package with twosets of mesh data, and the choice is made using a utility provided inthe scenery package, a passing reference to which appears in thedocumentation. The first (default) mesh is compatible with the defaultX-Plane scenery and the second with Alpilot's HD mesh scenery version3. Whilst this version of AlPilot's HD mesh is still available, it wassuperseded by version 4 shortly after the release of X-Plane 11. The mesh is designed to integrate the airport package into theimmediate surrounding scenery and as such, difference in appearancebetween the scenery package itself with the default mesh and theAlPilot HD mesh is minimal. The impact will be seen further afield ifyou're flying with a mesh other than those directly supported wherethe tile on which Gardermoen sits meets those that surround it. A quick check on the Aerosoft site suggests that no new mesh datafully compatible any other meshes has been made available, so, giventhat the X-Plane 11 land class of the surrounding area is more recentthan that in the HD version 3 mesh I elected to remain with thedefault. A Look Around The AirportWhere to start then? Given the history of the airfield, it seemsright and proper to start my tour at the military base to the north ofthe main terminal, and it's shown in Figure 3 - Gardermoen Flystasjon. Not being all that familiar withthe base, I went looking for images of the real thing online tocompare it against, and on the face of it, the scenery models are adecent representation of the real-world base. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-02.jpgFigure 3 - Gardermoen Flystasjon I tend not to look at things from a distance though and a closerinspection of the model reveals that it's quite basic, and that allthe detail is provided through draped textures. The hangar just to theright of the blue building in Figure 3 - Gardermoen Flystasjon is, inthe real world, predominantly glass on both front and rear but themodel has a draped texture on those surfaces which looks to have beentaken from a photograph of the real building. The approach is arguablya sensible compromise as the view of the building is representative ofits real-world counterpart and unless you're a stickler for detail, and taxiing in this part of the airfield, you're not going tonotice. Moving away from the military base, and turning our focus to thepassenger terminal, many passengers' first view of Gardermoen is goingto be that from the departures concourse, and whilst the screen shotmakes it look less busy than Iever saw it, it's definitely recognisable down to the inclusion ofKare Groven's 'Utkast' statue which greets passengers as they arrive. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-05.jpgFigure 4 - The departures concourse, with Kare Groven's 'Utkast' statue Looking around the main terminal building, more attention has beenpaid to its modelling than was evident in the military base andthere's plenty of detail to take in, from the panels mounted on theside of the buildings, to the structure of the columns and joistsholding up the roof. If I had to pick up on something, therepresentation of the sweeping curves of the roof of the main terminaland the new north pier are a bit too 'discrete' for me, in that thecurves are broken up into too few straight lines. I suspect that thisis attributable to the modeller trying to keep the polygon countdown! Moving airside, it was time to look at the gates, and where betterto start than Gate 39?! As can be seen in Figure 5 - Gate 39 lookingtowards the terminal there's lots going on. The standard of themodelling of the terminal remains consistently high, and the qualityof the ground textures and markings really is remarkable. There's ahost of airside vehicles going about their business and loads ofairside type furniture and signage to feast your eyes on. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-11.jpgFigure 5 - Gate 39 looking towards the terminal Whilst we're talking about service vehicles, Aerosoft has takenadvantage of the ability in X-Plane 11 to provide custom models thatare more in keeping with those that are in use at Gardermoen. Thedownside, should you take up the option to use them, is that only oneset can be present globally so if you are flying somewhere else, whenyou get there you're going to be greeted by vehicles that are out ofplace. It's difficult to spot in the screen shot, but the Visual GuidanceDocking Systems are operational if you've got Marginal's 'Autogate'plugin installed, and the same plugin enables operation of the Jetwayanimations and Aircraft Marshallers at the gates and parking spotsthat aren't equipped with the docking system. Adding to the reality, and also visible in Figure 5 - Gate 39looking towards the terminal, those elements of the terminal interiorthat can be seen from the outside have been modelled including, I mustreport, the interminably long corridor that runs from the immigrationdesks at the end of the east pier to the baggage reclaim hall forpassengers arriving on flights from non-Schengen countries! It mightseem that this is a lot of wasted effort on the part of the developer, but for me the parallax effect as I taxi close to a terminal adds anextra layer of realism that draped textures, no matter how good, really can't match. It's fair to say that the attention to detail of the modelling ofthe terminal interior is amongst the best in any airport add-on I'veever seen. The screen shot shows the view lookingback towards the departure hall, immigration and the Duty Free fromthe boarding area close to Gate 49 - where I waited many a time forthe boarding announcement for the flight back to Heathrow! /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-01.jpgFigure 6 - A night-time view inside the east pier The GA terminal - which served as the passenger terminal until thenew airport was built - is located to the west of the field and isshown in Figure 7 - The GA Terminal at Gardermoen. The design of the terminal is quite distinctive, andAerosoft has captured its features well, with the external concretestructure of the building being fully modelled in 3D. The texturingthat has been applied to the terminal shows it as being past its bestwith dark streaks of dirt and rusty metal panels. All the photos Imanaged to find of it online showed it as being a lot more pristinethan it appears here! /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-07.jpgFigure 7 - The GA Terminal at Gardermoen The cargo terminal at Gardermoen sits just behind the 'temporary'south-west pier and consists of seven gates taking up around 21,000square metres. The freight operators themselves were responsible forbuilding their own facilities, and so the terminal is actually acollection of buildings, and the Avinor web site claims there's spacefor more construction! Looking at the cargo apron, that does seem to be the case. The facilitiesconstructed by SAS, Braathens and DHL are all 3D modelled to areasonable fidelity and are easily identifiable. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-06.jpgFigure 8 - A view across the cargo apron towards the passenger terminal Gardermoen's 91-metre control tower is distinctive and its positionclose to the passenger terminal affords spectacular views across thewhole airfield. I'm the sort of person who can sit in an X-Plane towerwatching AI traffic, so it was quite disappointing to find that thewindows aren't transparent and that the defined tower position(selected using 'Shift-F5') repositions the viewpoint to ground levelon the military terminal apron which doesn't afford quite asspectacular a view. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-08.jpgFigure 9 - A view of Gardermoen's distinctive 91-meter tower with the north and east terminal piers Looking at the variation in quality of the modelling of differentparts of the airfield, it would be reasonable to draw the conclusionthat Aerosoft has made a conscious decision to focus its developmentefforts on those parts of the scenery that are going to appeal to themajority of the user community. If your preferred mode of flying isgeneral or military aviation, you may not get the opportunity toappreciate the scenery as much as you might for commercial flightsfrom the main passenger terminal. Ground texturing is specifically referenced in the features thatAerosoft lists for the scenery package, and from where I'm sitting, they can be justifiably proud of it. The various ground textures andtaxiway and apron markings are particularly good quality, and theirplacing around the airport looks to be a good match to thoseencountered in the real-world, thus adding to the immersion. The last part of my look around the airport takes me rolling theclock forward to night-time to check out the HDR lighting that'sdescribed as one of the package's key features. Showing you this froma distance isn't really going to bring out the best of this, so the screen shot focuses on just the east pier. As you cansee, the lighting effects are good, although again, I don't think ascreen shot does it justice. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-09.jpgFigure 10 - The east pier at night It's when you look at Gardermoen from the air that the orthophotothat it ships with becomes more evident. Quite often when usingdefault scenery, the boundaries of the orthophoto are obvious, butthat's not the case with this package and from what I can tell itlooks as if that might be because its edges aren't square but areformed around features near its edge. As orthophotos go, itsresolution isn't great so don't go looking too closely, but to enhancethe realism from the air in the vicinity of the airport, it's morethan adequate. /images/reviews/osloengm/t/aerosoft-airport-oslo-engm-04.jpgFigure 11 - Gardermoen from the air It's also evident from the air, and the orthophoto, that Aerosofthas modelled some buildings that sit outside of the airport perimeterbut has elected not to model some buildings that can be seen on theorthophoto inside the perimeter. They're not the only scenerydeveloper that does this, but I do sometimes find myself questioningthe rationale of such a decision if the objective is to produce asrealistic a package as possible. There's plenty more in the package that I've not talked about aboveand just about every time I fired up the simulator when writing thisreview I found something new that I'd not seen before. It is evidentthat a lot of work has been put into the creation of this scenerypackage, with focus on those areas of it that are likely to get themost attention. In Conclusion...As I mentioned at the start of the review, I was keen to see howAerosoft's Oslo airport package has stood the test of time. I'mpleased to be able to report that despite its advanced years insimulation terms, compared to some of the other commercial packagesI've seen over the past year or so, it continues to hold its own! OK -so I've called out some areas where I feel the package falls down, butthat's in the interests of providing a balanced view and letting youknow what to expect should you decide to invest in it. If Oslo Gardermoen is an airport that holds a particular place inyour sphere of interest, whether it be as a pilot who flies in and outof there regularly, or like me, as a passenger who racked up countlessfrequent flier miles travelling through it, then in my opinion thispackage is a worthwhile addition to your scenery library. /images/reviews/osloengm/title3.jpgAndrew Parish Purchase Aerosoft - Airport Oslo XP for X-Plane 11

  21. /images/notams/notams21/tabu0308.jpgNightXP V2 package for X-Plane introduces coverage for the whole ofDenmark and Norway. What exactly does NightXP do to enhance the X-Plane lights system? NightXPV2 introduces new lamps into the existing ecosystem and is designed to worktogether with default lights. It can be used with Vulkan or in OpenGLmode. It is designed to create those little details the night brings with itsdarkness in the nocturnal X-Plane world. The lamps are strategicallypositioned to illuminate buildings with emissive 3D light reflections takingadvantage of new X-Plane reflective surfaces. They are designed to be just alittle bit bigger than default lights to enhance their visibility andlight. NightXP is not invasive scenery, it is designed to avoid lightovercrowding. NightXP targets urban areas where there are buildings, lit upbuildings and roads only in residential areas for the whole country or USState they cover. For example, it will not add light on motorways or majorroads as X-Plane is already covered. Instead, it will light up theresidential roads, buildings, courtyards, alleyways, piers and depots tomention a few. NightXP is designed to make the most of X-Plane's new materials featuringlight reflections on the ground, water, ice, windows, roofs and any nativeX-Plane material designed to reflect light. NightXP works hard at night andrests in the day when the lamps are still visible but in 'Off' mode. NightXPis strategically positioned to resemble lampposts; we chose a shape and sizeto make sure it is visible for aircraft when flying over at night. X-Plane11 offers stunning and extensive night effects. NightXP is fully compatiblewith photorealistic scenery and any VFR objects scenery as lamps arepositioned respecting geographical features. Although the MSFS night world is very different than predecessor flightsimulators, visibility for external 3D objects is reduced. We made sure asfar as possible to overcome the limitation by blending Night3D effects withdefault lights effect to an obvious and sudden loading of light effects.
