Default Arctic Silver 5, Arctic Alumina, or Arctic Thermal Adhesive??

    Hi All,
I need to reseat a new cooling fan to my X2 4200 cpu. I am a bit confused after looking at the Arctic home page as to the differences between Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound, Arctic Alumina, and Arctic Thermal Adhesive.
Which one should I focus on to fasten an Arctic Freezer 64 Cooling Pro fan/cooler to my cpu???
And over time I though I had heard that you spread the stuff evenly over the top of the CPU, but the Arctic diagrams show putting a dot in the center, where the diode (?), or where the heat really escapes the CPU, then turning clockwise and couter clockwise once to spread and eliminate bubbles. Do I not need to cover the whole CPU???

Another thing is, though this Arctic Freezer 64 is compatible with my X2 4200, it has a 4 pin connector, where my MOBO is a 3 pin connector, but it does run on it seemingly normaly?? Is this ok??
The reason for having to reinstall it is - errr, I had it on backwards :P I didn't realize the fan SUCKS not BLOWS, so I need to reinstall, but want to clean the surfaces first, reaply the Arctic Silver (whichever you tell me to use) and go from there.

Thanks for all help, suggestions, and explanations. As you can see, I know what I am doing, I just don't know what I am doing!!! :P

Arctic Silver 5 is good, and really, most any thermal compound is fine. As for putting a dot in the center, they're relying on the pressure between the heatsink and CPU to spread it out evenly. I still spread it out myself though just to make sure.

Not sure about the fan question.

Then Arctic Silver 5 it is!
Thanks loki, and I think I will spread it evenly as well. Of course, not too thick.
    Appreciate it :)

    Hi loki,
I just found this on the Arctic-cooling web site, so i guess I am good!

"Does PWM’s 4-pin fan plug be able to use in 3-pin fan socket o*n mother board?
4-pin fan plug is downward compatible to 3-pin fan socket o*n mother board. The stopper o*n the plug actually guides you to insert."

    Thanks again,
