Thread: Real world weather as real as real?

Default Real world weather as real as real?

I have noticed a few things when using the real world weather feature.

    1. Why do overcast cloud decks appear semi transparent? At night it seems you can see the strobe light of other aircraft through a complete overcast layer

    2. The info from the real metars seems to be VERY localized. Example you check the ASOS and its 300 Overcast and 1/4 mile in snow with clouds layered up to 10,000, in the descent approaching the ILS you can see the runway lights until you get within say 4-5 miles of the airport then you seem to get into the 1/4 mile vis. I just tried this morning and compared to the current metars and the whole area was socked in. but the real low vis and clouds seem to only be within a few miles of the airport. btw anyone wanting a good free graphical representation of metars pireps etc try out adds.aviationweather.noaa.gov and click on the java tools tab and try out the metars, pireps etc java tools I use it every day in real world flying.

Anyone know of some ways to make the real world weather more like the real world?

You could try addons like ActiveSky 2004 or FSMeteo (payware) or FSMetar (freeware). I am using AciveSky and it is really neat! Weather is a lot more realistic.

yes i used FSMeteo with '02 but i thought the real world weather updateing capibility built into '04 superseeded the basic FSMeteo functions. From what i remember of it it went online and downloaded the metars for whatever area u were flying over as does the cutent defult '04. I did go to there side and there is no trial of FSMeteo for '04 only '04 :( I checked out the active sky site too but will active sky fix this problem of actual weather only being a few miles form the airport or will it blanket a whole area with overcast and low vis? Anyone that has active sky can you tell me?

ActiveSky has a great feature where you can input your flight plan so the weather is "ready in advance" for you. Also, when a METAR is unavailable for any rwason,, the program will generate a realistic weather according to the surrounding METARs. Very nice!

Please let us know if it solves the issue of weather suddenly appearing when you get around the airports. That is something that really bothers me as well and I will purchase it as well if it makes the weather more predictable and more consistent I guess it is....
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,

    Thanks for the purchase!

    39.58 USD

You'll love the solid overcast AS provides.

    Jim,
Is the weather more consistent? As per the original posters question, does this address the issue of weather suddenly popping up 4-5 miles away from the airport?
    Thanks in advance,
