Congrats! Bud - I'm 66 and I built my first computer over 20 years ago and haven't bought a readymade system since. It's the ONLY way to go. Sort of a nice feeling when you turn it on and it runs AND you know that YOU did it. Sort of helps you get control over the beast BUT do NOT, and I repeat do NOT get complacent. No matter what you think, the computer is smarter and more devious than you but be nice to it and it will repay in kind.

BTW, for the real oldtimers - my first computer was an IMSAI 8080. Programmed ONE BYTE at a time by flipping 16 switches on the front. After you manually entered your program in ram, you pressed the run or single step button and watched the flashing lights. No terminals or video - no keyboards or mouse but it STILL wa fun. And then there were the pre windows days of CP/M and.........ah well, I digress.

Again, congratulations - when are you starting on the upgrades ?? :)

Well, sometimes I'm forced to pulling my hair out! (Mostly from watching over these forums). ;)

Sometimes I'm forced into drinking, too! :)

Careful there - you'll also lose your teeth and fingernails watching the forums :)

Hi Vic. I know the computer is the boss. Thanks for your and all
other response(s). I can kind of relate to your first computer. I
remember when the National Weather Service got their first Field
Office mainframes. Seemed like a few hundred paddle switches that had
to be juggled or left alone to boot up. In reality was probably a few
dozen. Yep, the flashing lights told if you did it right. I used to
hate computers back then. Now that they bring me enjoyment with flight
    simming, I LOVE 'EM!

What I'm getting at is I built my first computer from scratch. Ordered
all the parts and glued it together. I am ecstatic with the results.
With little or any tweaking FS9 is entertaining me to no end, and at
present I'm doing it with keyboard controls. Joystick connections will
    arrive Monday.

What I'm trying to say is, I'm 68 years old and am, in no stretch of
the imagination, a computer genuius. But, after reading this Forum for
almost the past two years, I have gleaned much info from many. I don't
mean to sound like an Accademy Award winner but, I'd like to thank
Capt'n Slarty, Tim Kotula, and a countless list of others. This Forum
is most educational. Without it I would never have attempted to build
my own. Some of my specs are below.

    Asus P4P800 Deluxe Mobo
    P4 2.6
    Asus Ti4200 AGP
Corsair Matching DDRAM (total 1 gig)
Dual WD 120gb in a RAID 1 config.

I still have a long way to go to get it all set up, but Rome wasn't
    built in a day.

And I would be remiss if I didn't thank my wife of 48 years. Judy,
who is the brains of this duo, checked all of the work to see that it
all was properly connected. This saved money on fire extinguishers.

BTW, I didn't ask a lot of questions on the forum. But I sure did
learn from the questions of others. Is this a great forum, or what!
God love you and thank you for sharing!!!!!

Me 70yrs, finnished my first ever build last month after meticulously analyzing hundreds of YT movies for a whole year copying the proces with the parts of my old PC. Never forget the day when a had my new build completed outside of my new case, pressed the external Alib 'on switchy cable' and it booted and after config BIOS and installing WIN it worked like heavens. It had been a journey with some very deep traps almost to the point of quitting all together. Only thing still missing: a descent GPU for a 'normal price' My specs: 5 5600X, B550M Pro-p, GTX1050TI, 2x16GB 3200 16, M2 1TB, Mugen5PCGM, CM PSU 650Wmod, 1 HDD, 1 SSD, 1 ODD, CM N200 pretty crowded in there with total of 7 fans. I can only advise: start building outside of the case first laying your MB on a box and slowly progressing from there. Most PSU cables are more than long enough. Use magnetic screwdrivers, have some coolerpaste ready (start with the 'stock-cooler') and study and study the included manuals , th'ere there for a reason and last do not force anything !!!!. Then check and check again before hitting 'ON', be carefull with that screwdriver.... My CPU at max FSX: Mesh, ORBX, AS16, LNMap max 76C (idle 24C) have MSFS, FSX, FS9, FS8. My build is completed in its case now and again never been more proud in my live with my own build.

I'm thinking of getting a new gaming PC for MSFS 2020 soon. Even though I'v tinkered with the innards of PC's for many years, the recent cost of components leaves me to think: Let the pros put it together. I think I would be much too edgy to tackle a DYI...

Ah, we've all been there. Double check, triple check, return an hour later and quadruple check. Fully expect an explosion of sparks and smoke and dollar signs.

My first scratchbuild was a 486DX4/100 with a whopping 8meg RAM and a gigantic 1.2gig HD. But over the years I've had more trouble from "off-the-shelf" systems than anything i built.
