Default I Did It, I Did It, I Did It! Yes I Did!

I was scared stiff to hit the ON button. But with the prodding of my
friend R. Stearns, he said "ya gotta move on". Mr. Stearns also did
most if not all of the BIOS. What a guy.

What I'm getting at is I built my first computer from scratch. Ordered
all the parts and glued it together. I am ecstatic with the results.
With little or any tweaking FS9 is entertaining me to no end, and at
present I'm doing it with keyboard controls. Joystick connections will
    arrive Monday.

What I'm trying to say is, I'm 68 years old and am, in no stretch of
the imagination, a computer genuius. But, after reading this Forum for
almost the past two years, I have gleaned much info from many. I don't
mean to sound like an Accademy Award winner but, I'd like to thank
Capt'n Slarty, Tim Kotula, and a countless list of others. This Forum
is most educational. Without it I would never have attempted to build
my own. Some of my specs are below.

    Asus P4P800 Deluxe Mobo
    P4 2.6
    Asus Ti4200 AGP
Corsair Matching DDRAM (total 1 gig)
Dual WD 120gb in a RAID 1 config.

I still have a long way to go to get it all set up, but Rome wasn't
    built in a day.

And I would be remiss if I didn't thank my wife of 48 years. Judy,
who is the brains of this duo, checked all of the work to see that it
all was properly connected. This saved money on fire extinguishers.

BTW, I didn't ask a lot of questions on the forum. But I sure did
learn from the questions of others. Is this a great forum, or what!

I remember the first time I hit the ON but after making a system myself ... it was very nerve wracking, but rather exciting once it successfully boot. Unfortunately, today I haven't much luck when I put in a new processor along with the power supply. Anyways... congrats on your achievement!

    Excellent work!!

I just built mine from scratch as well. Very similar to yours.

Although, when I hit the power switch the 1st time, it did NOT turn on. I almost cried. I had been working on it for about 10 hours, it was about 2:00am, and nothing. It turned out, however, that I put the power switch connection into the wrong pins, and 30 seconds later, plus a few prayers, I hit the switch, and Boom! There she is! Up and Running!! Woo Hoo..

My System, now about 1 month old..

Antec Case, w/ 430 True Watt PSU (also Antec)
    Asus P4P800 Deluxe MB
Corsair XMS DDR PC3200 Ram 1.0 GB
    2.8 Ghz P4 478 pin, 800 FSB
    And a couple of CD-Roms

Now, to be a pain in the #####, and do my moderator duties...you know, this does belong in the Lounge Forum.

Kind of gives you a sense of accomplishment, huh? I don't know how many computers I've built or re-built over the years, but it seems I learn something new with each one. I've just re-built my main computer, and am in the process of building one from scratch for my brother-in-laws business.

Sometimes I feel like banging my head against the wall, but if I walk away for a while, it all comes together when I return. Lots of fun, IMO.

Well, maybe I did get the wrong forum, but thanks for putting up with
me doing such. This is the only forum I have ever posted on and, being
an old dude, ya gotta give us a little slack, and you do.

By the way. Drobson and Brian. Egads, you two look like scary guys in
your pics. In a fight, I want you on my side. And Brian, how is the
daughter coming along. Has she had her 1st birthday yet?

Thanks for the kind words. Glad to be of help. It's great to hear that it worked for you on the first try. I wish I'd had been that lucky and been spared two weeks of grief last year, lol. :-)

    Thats great!

I just put together my first computer about a week ago. Well it wasn't all from scratch as I did take a lot of the parts off my old computer. It took me about 2 hours to snap it all together but when I finally got it all together I realized that I didn't put in the power for the CPU on the P4 MOBO.

After I got that done I started it up, went into the BIOS and after that was done it didn't boot Win XP. After about a day I realized that I needed to reainstall windows and did so. After that was done I couldn't be happier!

So this is partially a rebuild computer and my next one is probably going to be solo for Linux as I am going to start programming, but that is a different story.

    Regards,
    Paul

I remember six years ago when build my first pc (PIII 300 MHz), my pc didn't recognize the H/D, the problem was solved after I made a call to my friend, it seems my H/D had not been low-formated yet. :)
