Thread: Which is the best, a 128 Mb SDRAM or a 64 Mb DDR Video Card??

Default Which is the best, a 128 Mb SDRAM or a 64 Mb DDR Video Card??

Hello people,

In my inttention to buy a video card I have another doubt. Which Geforce video card is the better? A 128 SDRAM or a 64 DDR? My system runs 416 MB SDRAM Dimm memory. Would that interfere?

Thanks everyone!

Victor.

Victor,

Get a ATI RADEON 9700 (PRO) card with 128 MB.
Better value for money and better speed than GEFORCE 4 series with AA 4x and AF 8x on (= nicer picture)

Its really up to you to decide boths cards are great...a video card does not really need 128mb of ram but they are increasing the memory size more and more each time for example the new ATI Radeon 9800 PRO has 256mb of DDR memory! That is just crazy..SDRAM 128mb gives you a lot of memory but the version with 64 is DDR much faster than SDRAM but gives you a low amount...I would choose the 64 it would yield better performance.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-02-03 AT 04:19PM (EDT)[p]The differences between a 64 MB card and a 128 MB card are minimal. Textures might load a few microseconds faster but that's about it. If you are looking at a Ti4200, the 128 MB card actually clocks slower than the 64 MB card although you wouldn't notice the difference in FS.

I'd still go for the 128 MB model if you are going to have this system awhile, but do make sure it is DDR memory. SDRAM is much slower than DDR and you would just wind up with a bottleneck. Less chance of a shortage with 128 MB, although it's unlikely that one would occur.

$52 from Pricewatch:

Inno3D GeForce 4 MX 440. 128 MB SDR w/ Tv-Out. 4x AGP

So they do make them. I just hope he isn't looking at an GF4 MX card.

As far as Ti4200s, I agree. I think they only make Ti4200s with DDR memory.

Hello Tim,

What do you mean about "I just hope he isn't looking at an GF4 MX card"? Is that true that some Geforce models doesnt run very nice with FS?

Thanks,

Victor.

Do not buy a Geforce MX series video card.

64MB DDR is much faster than 64MB SDRAM. Whether it'll be faster than 128MB will depend on the programs you are running. DDR RAM is often clocked higher than the SDRAM anyway, so it'll be faster.

64DDR will serve you fine unless you're running very high resolutions.

It runs fine but the problem is GPU bandwidth. It's about half the transaction speed of the full blown chip set so if you have a fast CPU it can cause a bottleneck.
