The First Woman to Fly Solo Around the World

Recommended Posts

Yes, I remember that feat hitting the magazines. Jerrie was quite a sensation in the G.A. world for a little while. AND, that was done long before Loran was available for aircraft (huge, heavy systems, complex too) and even longer before GPS. Also, there were many parts of the world where even VORs were scarce, and an ADF was needed (if radio nav was available at all).

BTW, I love the Cessna 180, one of the most versatile light 4-seaters around. It was excellent for glider tow, even at a 5000 ft elevation, and for getting into back country strips -- one of my favorite aircraft.

Here's a good graphic showing her flight plan:

If the pilot's good, see, I mean, if he's really sharp, he can barrel that baby in so low... hee hee. Oh, you ought to see it sometime, it's a sight. A big plane like a 52 - vrooom! Ha! Its jet exhaust frying chickens in the barnyard! Ha ha! - Gen Buck Turgidson
