A Trip to the Boneyard - Part 2

Recommended Posts

After landing at Southern California Logistics Airport (KVCV), an aircraft "Boneyard," a surplus American Airlines MD80 has been towed to a permanent parking place in a field of other stored and decommissioned airplanes while waiting for a final decision on its fate.

The possibilities are a new owner buys or leases it and puts it back into service with a new air carrier :), the reuseable parts like flight instruments or structural pieces like engines or wing flaps get removed and resold as spares or replacements to operators still flying MD80s , or - worst case- a wrecking crew shows up to chop the airplane up in pieces to sell for scrap :(.

Any one of these scenarios could take months or years to play out. In the meantime, ex AA N9405T sits patiently in the desert sun.
