has the sim gotten slower?

Hi

Installed the latest US patch and thought I would fly the tour NY to Washington. To my surprise, NW is not rendered as it did before, the big apple is a bunch of strange looking pyramids, the Hudson river is built of tiles, etc. Do you guys have the same issue?

 

note, I run the sim on a brand new computer, 2080Ti 32 gig of RAM and a i9-10900, everyting has worked smoothless so far on max settings.

Something turned off your photogrammetry setting. Go into your settings, find photogrammetry and turn it back on.

Ultra does not concern photogrammetry. If you have trouble rendering, I suggest lower some of your settings to high and activate photogrammetry. Without photogrammetry, cities like NYC will look really bad, even at ultra!!

where do you have that setting? activate photogrametry?

 

Hi, go to options..general... DATA... photogrammetry is the third option down.

Hi. Can people tell me what their range or average FPS's are with this setup:

 

Intel I79700K, Zotac NVidia RTX 2070 Super Mini, 32 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD, (added a second 1 TB SSD),

Internet "speed", 400-500 Mbps, say, with all settings on Ultra,

 

It seemed I was getting 35-45, now, just installed World Scenery update, getting 23-28, over Wash DC ... ?

Both numbers sound reasonable for your setup. If you go out to western Illinois, your fps will jump back to 40-45. Very dense scenery like DC or NYC or London will drop fps significantly!

I was getting incredibly smooth flight over London with a 1070ti and i7 8700k, 16Gb ram and mix of high and ultra settings. I wasn't tracking my fps at the time, but it was smooth and estimate 30+fps

For a couple of days after the USA update everything seemed to slow down a bit, with reduced FPS and even a bit of stuttering, which I didn't get before.

 

But today everything is back to as before, perhaps a little better. I suspect that it maybe took a while for each individuals system to catch up whilst download speeds were affected. It might not have helped, for me anyway, that I cleared the rolling cache.

 

Now going to experiment with tweaking the graphics values to see what difference, both in speeds and visuals, it makes.

With this setup : Power Spec 434 ($1600 plus extended warranty): Intel I7-9700K, Zotac NVidia RTX 2070 Super Mini, G Skill Ripjaw 32GB DDR4-3600 RAM; 1TB NVMe SSD (added a second 1 TB SSD), CPU cooler/lights, 27 inch curved AOC C27G1 monitor,

 

and all settings on ultra, should I only be getting 19-23 fps when flying around complex cities, like NYC, DC, Paris ... ? are there some video settings that I can decrease, with little decline in detail that will give me fps gain ?

Yes, that is appropriate. If you want more fps, you can drop a few things to high instead of ultra and not notice much difference. i would look at grass, light shafts, water and maybe others.

my setup is below ... interesting, flying Seattle, Mt Ranier, then Vancouver, my same settings ... Vancouver takes a few seconds to fill in initially ... flying over Vancouver downtown 24-28 fps, then fly over forested area near downtown and drops to 15-18 fps (start to get mildly detectable stuttering) ... I then started adjusting terrain level of detail, render scaling, anisotropic filtering, texture supersampling ... don't necessarily get an improvement ... continue experimenting/learning ...

You might try turning off AI traffic? In areas with a lot of flights, the program is using a lot of resources to keep real traffic populated. Also, maybe reducing ground traffic? I do run live traffic, but only minimal ground traffic. I don't fly into congested areas often.

I'm now using the Developer's Tool - FPS chart, and trying to find correlations between various setting main thread and GPU milliseconds/frame, it is presently about 15 ms main thread and 21 ms GPU, GPU limiting ... I also was recently dealing with a CTD issue, which I think I solved ...

take a look at this, from (Microsoft's) Flight Simulator forum:

 

The important thing to understand is any modern game will be either CPU or GPU limited with a given set of settings. Usually modern games are GPU limited, (because modern games emphasize awesome graphics and screens have got bigger). Most games are so limited by the graphics processing that it’s not possible to max out the cpu, but FS2020 is different because there’s plenty of work the cpu can do if the settings ask for that.

 

The OP has a 5-year-old top-end graphics card (which now counts as weak) and a weaker cpu, so here’s what he should do (other than upgrade), actually it makes sense for everyone:

 

Run the in-game developer FPS tool (I posted on this here separately)

 

The tool will tell the frame rate, whether the sim is cpu or gpu bottlenecked, and how many milliseconds per frame the ‘main’ cpu thread and the gpu are taking. E.g. if the main thread is taking 40ms per frame then your MAXIMUM fps can only be 1000/40 i.e. 25 fps. You’ll see the “limited by gpu/cpu” message is whichever of gpu or ‘main thread’ is taking the longest.

 

If you are CPU limited, then reducing the settings that load the CPU will improve your frame rate. These include AI aircraft, scenery LOD, and object LOD settings. So reduce these (err on the side of a big reduction first) and watch the fps and ‘main thread’ milliseconds. When these come down to the same as your gpu, your fps will be maxed.

 

If you are GPU limited, then reduce just about any other setting. I’d start with the graphics scaling parameter - this reduces screen resolution but does it better than simply choosing to run full-screen at a non-native resolution. Similarly monitor the “gpu milliseconds” until they match the cpu. The settings for trees and bushes are heavy on the gpu also. Also reflections IIRC.

 

I’m not suggesting you just dial everything down to “■■■■”, just do the adjustments in 3 & 4 until you max your FPS at a reasonable rate (and your FPS tool will be flickering between gpu/cpu limited) and then you can carefully tweak individual settings until you get the trees (or whatever) the way you like them but understand the trade-off you’ll have to make with the clouds (or whatever).

 

By the way, do this with ‘custom weather few clouds’ on the runway at LOWI, so you get a repeatable test setup. That airport is pretty busy so you’ll also see the framerate hit each time a player passes in their 747.

 

FYI my 32GB, 9700K, 2080Ti, 4K, Ultra setup really was around 28-33fps there, and I used the method above to tweak it up to a smooth 55fps (including a serious graphics scaling of maybe 70%, I forget). The surprising thing was at 1080p/Ultra the fps was still only 42 fps because the 9700K was maxed out (and the gpu was under 50% used), hence adjustments needed for both cpu and gpu even though my rig is above the MS spec. I think MS are making the auto default settings too high and this is disappointing people.
